When a killer threatens his family before their testimony in a capital murder trial, Patrick Flint will do anything to keep them safe.

A peaceful day of skiing for the family. The murder of a prominent judge’s wife. A witness becomes the next thirteen-year-old Perry Flint.

Patrick, his wife Susanne, and their kids head to the mountains for a day of skiing. At the lodge, thirteen-year-old Perry is the sole eyewitness to the murder of a prominent judge’s wife, only days before the first capital murder trial in the state of Wyoming since its reinstatement by the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Susanne and Trish are gearing up to testify against ruthless killer Billy Kemecke at the trial, unless his criminal family can stop them first. With his family threatened from all sides, Patrick Flint will do anything to keep them safe.

“Best book I’ve read in a long time!”

“What about us?” To Trish Flint’s surprise, her younger brother Perry’s voice didn’t waver or even crack. “Are you going to kill us?”

Their captor turned to him again. “I thought you were smart, but I take it back. Of course I am, Perry. You can identify me, and you were going to tell your family about me. You’re the only thing tying me to the murder of Jeannie Renkin. I’m sorry. It’s nothing personal.”

Just then, while their captor’s eyes were still on Perry, a mountain lion jumped in the road right in front of the truck. It was enormous in the dusky gloom of the headlights. Trish screamed. Their captor’s head whipped forward. Arms jerked to the right. The truck lurched toward the rock face towering above them and one of the signs that said the rocks were old as dirt. Their captor wrenched the wheel away from the rock. The truck smashed into the cougar with a sickening thud, skittered to the left, and kept going. Trish’s head snapped forward and she braced herself against the dashboard. Beside her, Perry wasn’t as lucky. His body slammed into the gear shift and dashboard. The weight of his body ripped the rearview mirror off the windshield.

For a moment, Trish thought everything was going to be okay, until their captor’s overcorrection sent the truck careening off the side of the road and into the nothingness over Clear Creek.

I am so happy to be back with the Flint family and I know there will be a dangerous adventure ahead for all of us.

“Skiing give me a headache.” Her teeth chattered. “These clothes aren’t waterproof. I’m freezing and I can’t get up.”

Even though Pamela Fagan Hutchins puts her characters through some hair raising experiences, we do have some light, fun moments.

No one said you had to know how to ski to help an inured skier and that’s how the family ended up on the hill.

Perry may be on the small side, but he is no stranger to danger and able to hold his own. He took to skiing like a duck to water, until…

The point of view switches to each character, sharing their take on the situation. I love seeing it from their perspective. It makes it easier to relate to them, care about them.

Trisha is really hot for Brandon, a character whose family does not wish the Flint family well. I don’t want to explain a lot about the situation, because if you haven’t read the first books in the series, it would ruin it for you. Suffice it to say, I don’t think much of him and sincerely hope that she will see who he truly is.

I love the cougar showing up, even bringing her cub to ‘meet’ Patrick. Could she be his spirit animal. Living in Wyoming, he has learned a lot about Indian culture and has an open mind.

Politics rears its ugly head and Patrick’s life gets even more complicated. I worry at every turn, especially for Trisha. She is rash, in love, and reckless, with brief moments of insight.

I would say this is a coming of age novel, because Trisha and Perry will be making leaps in becoming the adults they are meant to be. They are learning some costly lessons of love and trust. Sawbones is also a mystery, because there are characters with sinister and deadly intent…and that leads to never a dull moment in the Flint household.

I love that the series truly comes from her heart.

Sawbones - a review by Rosemary Kenny

*slight spoilers*
The eponymous Sawbones is engraved on a pocket knife carried,(appropriately) by MC Dr Patrick Flint, having been gifted it by his good friend, Wes, who works with him at the same hospital in Wyoming, where our story begins. Pamela Fagan Hutchins, the Princess of Mystery and Suspense has outdone herself yet again, with the latest from her wonderful Patrick Flint series, #3,Sawbones.
A family skiing holiday, in return for on-call duty suddenly and unexpectedly goes awry and danger is all around, especially for Perry, the youngest of the Flints, who has been working on building up his muscles in anticipation of his (hopefully impending) becoming a man as soon as possible. Annoying elder sister Trish calls him Shrimp, which really gets to him, while Mom Susanne and some of her friends call him 'sweet' and other irritating, (though well-meant) pet-names.
Trish is being a typical teenage drama queen, defying her parents and dating a boy, Brandon, who's part of the criminal family (the  Kemeckes), she and Susanne are key witnesses at the trial of...now presided over by their next door neighbour, Judge Renkin, who's been summoned to take over, after the previous Judge was murdered. Despite the potential for danger, she's determined that she and her 'great love' and soulmate Brandon are going to be together forever, despite rumours of his infidelity and her parents' stern opposition to the relationship.
How will things work out for each of the Flints? When is Patrick called to an emergency at the ski-lodge? Who takes Susanne and the children on a wild ride? Can the Judge be trusted, or is he central to the conspiracy, that surrounds and threatens Patrick and his family? Who survives and who pays the ultimate price?Don't let dreadful weather, Coronavirus or anything else deter you from finding your next great read. when Sawbones is guaranteed to take your mind off your/ the world's troubles and make self-isolation a lot easier to cope with!

My my my. I can’t understand the high rating on this one. I simply can’t.

Silly me, I thought I was getting a murder mystery. But, no! Instead, this story was an episode of “Falcon Crest” or “Dallas”. This was nothing more than a soap opera about the many misadventures of the Flint family! And how they always seem to get mixed up in a crime!

I will say this; author Pamela Hagan Hutchins does a fantastic job writing in different characters. When a chapter has the pov of the father, she writes like the father. When it is from the little boy’s pov, she writes it differently. That and few uses of ‘said’ - just a good, immersive way of writing.

But, alas, the story I felt was rather lacking. It was just this character has a scene, then another character and so on. There was no investigation going on or anything really. But; the last ten minutes: a perfect epilogue to all the dangling threads, exactly like how an episode of Starskey and Hutch might end.

I realize this was the third in the series, and Hutchins does well enough in catching the audience up. However; I don’t care enough about this group of schmucks.

In the vein of CJ Box, Pamela Fagan Hutchins delivers an action-driven page-flipping thriller featuring an emergency room doctor in 1970s Wyoming. The author demonstrates a talent for writing teen and pre-teen angst as well as a nostalgic look back on decades before computers and cell phones. With plenty of red herrings, Hutchins creates a mystery that keeps you guessing to the last page.

The third book in a fantastic series. Once you start Sawbones you can't put it down while you go on a major roller coaster ride with lots of twists turns, a bratty know-it-all teenage daughter who takes drama queen to a whole new level and a young 13 year old who is trying to find where he fits in the realm of things. When Doctor Flint moves his family from their home in Texas to Wyoming, his wife has a hard time acclimating at first. This book begins with the doctor taking his family on a gratis ski trip, even though they have never had lessons. When Patrick Flint's wife Susanne had some trouble trying to ski, their friend and co-doctor Wes met up with them to help her ski down the hill when rifle shots rang out and the people down the mountain started to scream. With Trish sitting at a table by the lodge with her bad boy boyfriend, Brandon she ran to help her father hold a torniquet on the victims neck where she was shot. It seems it was judge Renkin's wife! Was she the target or was the judge? After all, the judge was going to hear the first degree murder case against the Kenecke family member where Susanne and Trish were star witnesses. But where was Perry? He had skiied off by himself into the wooded area when he saw a snowmobile and a disguised person who scared him. This is just the beginning of a book you can't put down until the surprising ending. Things aren't always what they seem, especially when you are witnesses to a murder case, a teenage daughter who is going through growing pains and a 13 year old who tries hard to be a good boy and protect his mother. I can't wait to see what happens next since we still have a trial that needs to be set again. With the main line of the story and sub themes you are taken away into being a part of the action! I received an ARC from the author but the opinions here are strictly my own.

This is the third book in the series about Dr Patrick Flint and his family in Wyoming. All of the books grab you and you don't want to put them down.

This story builds on the first two; can be read as a standalone but even better read in order.

Patrick takes his family on a skiing trip gratis for him volunteering as an on call physician for the weekend. Suzanne is having issues learning to ski. Patrick didn't want to pay for ski lessons and thought they could figure it out. They hear what sounds like a rifle shot and Patrick heads downhill to a group of people in distress. The Judge that is set to begin a capital murder trial which Suzanne and Trish are witnesses for is in the group and it's his wife who was shot. He seems oddly unemotional.

Perry gets separated from them on a trail. He likes skiing and is having a great time when he sees someone off through the trees on a snowmobile with a duffle bag. He raises his hand in greeting; the person sees him and takes off. Due to a full helmet and snowsuit, he can't tell who it is.

Is Patrick able to save the Judge's wife? Was the shooter really aiming for the Judge? Is the Kemecke family behind this? Trish is with Brandon at the ski lodge. What will it take to finally break them up?

There are many twists to the story I certainly didn't see coming. Great suspense! Looking forward to the next book! I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.

2.5 stars really
I have two adult daughters, was a high school counselor for 20 years, and I find the character, Tricia, the daughter raised in a loving family with evidently intelligent parents, to be bizarre and possibly stupid! Perhaps ADD?

She should have been traumatized after her ordeal in book 1. This would be a normal reaction she should be concerned about anything related to the insane family from Book 1. She is very narcissistic and completely unlikeable. Hissy fits when she doesn’t get her way even though the adults have explained the reasons for curbing her activities repeatedly.

This was not my favorite by Hutchins, and I'm beginning to think that the Flint family ought to leave Wyoming for their own health and safety! It's always difficult in a crime/suspense series that doesn't revolve around a private eye or a cop to plausibly develop realistic storylines. This storyline did feature the family of past murderer but that wasn't the only danger to the Flint family.

More than that, the Flints don't have enough rough edges. Patrick's main fault is that he is cheap. Susanne talks too much and misses the South. Both of them, especially Patrick, lament what they would do without the other. Their characters are not deep and complex enough. They are too goody goody, perhaps because they are based on Hutchins' actual family - her dad and mom, herself and her brother.

She does state that she tried to make her character - Trish - have the biggest faults, yet the parents in the novel do not stand up to it. Trish repeatedly steps out of line and disobeys their wishes, yet again and again they give her second, third, fourth chances and don't really punish her. Not realistic in this nuclear family in the 1970s.

Hutchins has a different Wyoming series (as well as a continuation of the Patrick Flint series), so I may try that next time I need a palate cleanser/light read.

I enjoyed Sawbones by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. It was the third in the Patrick Flint series, and I read the previous two. I thought the first installment was a bit formulaic, but the second was a vast improvement. Sawbones was an interesting read; however, I thought some of the connections near the climactic ending were a bit contrived. Nevertheless, I sped through the novel, and I was heavily invested in the thrilling ending. Patrick Flint is a doctor in a small town in Wyoming, and he lives there with his wife Susanne, teenage daughter, Trish, and thirteen year old son, Perry. This book is closely related to the previous book, Snake Oil, as members of the Flint family are preparing to testify against the bad guys. Trish and her relationship with Brandon, a hunk on the high school basketball team, are also integral to the storyline. I love the development of the Flint family characters. They share some common traits, but they are also unique in many ways. The author does a nice job of describing the late winter and early spring weather, and the variable conditions play a role in the plot. The Flints are from Texas, so the introduction of the Wyoming culture and subsequent clashing with the Texas code make an interesting side topic. I look forward to reading book four in the Patrick Flint series.

The continuing saga of Patrick Flint and his family is entertaining, suspenseful at times. Multiple stories within the story. Who is killing who and why? Is it the same murderer or multiple murderers? Why kill a judge, a judge's wife? Are they both connected to the Kemecke trial or could it be something else? Patrick feels he must protect his family at all costs while trying to discover who is committing the murders. Perry, his son, is the only witness to the shooter in the judge's wife's murder. Can he keep that a secret, so the murderer doesn't come after Perry? In the midst of that his wife, Susanne, and daughter, Trish, key witnesses in the trial, are being threatened by Donna Lewis, Trish's boyfriend's mother. Trish just won't stay away from Brandon, her boyfriend, no matter what her parents say or do. Can she trust him or is he just another bad boy out for himself? You will have to read the book to find the answers to the questions. Although this can be read as a standalone, I do suggest you read the first 2 books in the series to have a full understanding of this book. Would recommend the whole series. Received an advance copy and this is my voluntary honest review.

Sawbones grabs you from the beginning and is impossible to put down

The story opens on the ski slopes of the majestic Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. Patrick has agreed to be the on-call doctor for the day, and in exchange, the Flint family is given lift tickets for the day. None of the family has skied before, but that didn't stop them from attempting, poorly!
All except Perry who found he is a natural and decides to go off on a trail his parents wouldn't approve of. He decides they wouldn't find out. Wrong! While off on the trail, Perry sees a person dressed in white camouflage on a yellow snowmobile. Perry waves, but the person doesn't wave back. Here the suspense and murders begin that need to be solved. As usual, the Flints are the target of some not so nice people. Multiple murders occur. Are they connected? Do they have something to do with the Kemecke murder trial, of which Susanne and Trish are the star witnesses? Are the characters as they appear, or are they evil and hiding dark secrets? It's always a challenge to figure out who is responsible. As always, there are many twists and turns. I promise you'll thoroughly enjoy this book!

Sawbones is the 3rd in the Patrick Flint series. But it's not necessary that you read these books in order because there's enough details about what happened previously to keep readers up to date. However, I suggest you read the first two books so you can truly appreciate Ms. Fagan-Hutchins writing style and really get to know the characters. Sawbones is very exciting, with descriptions so vivid it's easy to visualize the surroundings and actions. This is one thrilling event after another, keeping readers guessing until the very end. Patrick's wife, Susanne, is an amazingly strong lady as are their two children, Perry and Trish. Despite the deaths of people involved with the upcoming trial, despite Susanne and Trish being threatened if they testify about the terrors they endured months before, they all exhibit bravery and determination against the odds. I highly recommend this page-turner. ( If Dr. Flint were my doctor I think life would be tons more interesting)
Note: I received a free copy of Sawbones for my non-biased, honest opinion.

What a special trip into the 1970s and the Pacific Northwest! I am truly enjoying this series, and Sawbones was a pretty compelling read. Patrick's wife Susanne and daughter Trish as major witnesses in one of Wyoming's first death-penalty-eligible murder trials - and the hits just keep on coming. There are hints of spring but not enough to do more than tease, and everyone but the dog is stressed out and keeping frantically busy as they await the trial, the date of which has been reset several times, usually because of the death of a major player. Susanne and Trish are THE major players for the defense and getting help to ensure their safety falls to their circle of friends. It is far from an easy task and the hits arrive from unexpected directions. Kept me up much too late, this one. This is an excellent tale, told very well. I am especially enjoying this family, this history. I think you will, as well.

Out of the three books that I've read in this series...this was my favourite. I do love how the author is building out this world with the events of the previous two books...and allowing some of the payoffs in this story.

I still do NOT like Trish, their daughter. My wife and I would NOT have been so kind to her...for becasue of her...a LOT of the problems were exacerbated.

In this story, Patrick wasn't the one that continued to make bad decisions, but this time it was his wife, though the most egregious were when she was having a migraine...and NO ONE makes good decisions with those.

Good character growth and a fairly good mystery of WHO dunnit.

The reveals were well placed and thoughtout. Very good.

I stayed up half the night finishing this book! Once I started, I couldn't put it down. It's the continuing story of Patrick Flint and his family, and their "adventures" in Buffalo, Wyoming. I say "adventures" because the Flint family continually runs afoul of murderers and kidnappers, not your average adventure. While the book can be read as a standalone, it's best read after the other 2 in the series or you lose some of the background detail.
This book was full of great characters, and character development. If you've read the other books, you can see the growth of the characters. The story line had plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I can't wait for the next one!

This series is definitely growing on me, the first couple of books were good, but this one turned into a real 'page-turner' that started off in a very exciting way, and got better from then on, reaching a truly thrilling climax.
The characters in this series are very colourful and extremely well described, and importantly for me, they behave in a consistent manner. The central character is a doctor, Patrick Flint and the series revolves around him and his family and their adventures with a local criminal family.
I also really enjoy the descriptions of the locations where the action takes place, as they really allow me to picture it.
I received an advance copy of the book, but have written this honest review voluntarily.

Sawbones

With humor, love and suspense more of the Flint story is revealed. Without expecting to I fell in love with this family. Dr Flint, a dedicated doctor living his dream in Wyoming and forcing his family along; Susanne, a little bit of a spoiled woman but all in for her family; Trish, the reason I thank God I had only sons (seriously strong willed with lovesickness thrown in) and Perry, the little brother with big dreams. Put together, their family love will fight anything for each other and after the kidnappings Trish and Susanne endured it takes a lot to keep everyone safe until they can testify at the trial of a killer. Seriously good with great characters, a twisting plot and excitement that builds until the end!

Pamela Fagan Hutchins and The Flint family keep the readers laughing and on their toes. As the Flints once again find themselves in perilous danger they have to figure who is friend or foe. One thing I always look for in this series, is the conversations and this doesn’t disappoint. The colloquiums and slang native to the setting and period is very spot on. Perry continues to be a teenage boy on a mission as he fights to grow and be the savior for his family. Trish is struggling with her teenage boyfriend and faces a mountain of challenge and disappointment. Throughout it all as a family they stick together and protect each other at all cost.

A Thrilling Read

Sawbones is the 3rd book in the Patrick Flint Series, a spin off of the What Doesn't Kill you series by Pamela Fagan Hutchins set in the 70s. This book does not disappoint! It is cleanly written, full of adventure, twists and turns, hilarious dialogue amidst non-stop life threatening attempts against Patrick and his family as they prepare for the upcoming trial that his wife and daughter have to testify at. Add to that new murders, political corruption, numerous bad guys and a huge twist... Patrick has his hands full trying to protect his family! This is one hell of a page turned that I couldn't put it down!

A real page-turner!
When the family is given free lift tickets in exchange for Patrick being the on-call physician off they go. Although none of them have ever skied before, that's no reason for them to pass up the opportunity. A mystery man dressed in white camouflage is spotted by Perry when he leaves the others to go off on his own. Does the mystery man have anything to do with the murders that are suddenly taking place? As always Ms. Hutchins kept me guessing as to what was really going on and who was responsible. Guaranteed to take your mind off everything else and delight your inner sleuth.

Sawbones is the 3rd book in the Patrick Flint Series. The point of view switches to each character, sharing their take on the situation....adds to the enjoyment. The plot is pretty complex and the characters rotate around the four person family. The book drags in the middle when Trisha, the teen girl, adds to the drama with some teen angst. I thought it detracted from the story as the reader kept saying: "Donnnn't dooo iiiitttt!" The book is set in Buffalo, Wyoming...a small town smack in the middle of the state and would be Absaroka County if this were a Longmire book. I wasn't impressed enough to continue my reading of this author as there are others who impress me more.

Unfortunately, this installment dealt with more than I wanted it to with Trish. This girl needs self-confidence and a dose of reality even though I would have thought she had enough reality from book one. The story was very predictable. The only character that surprised me was Ben Jones.

I can only say I liked the overall story but if Trish continues to be the pill she is, I won’t be following the series any longer.

The narrator did a good job with the story.

I disliked the self-centeredness of Trish, the Flint’s 16 year old daughter. At this point, I could care less about this character. She is easily manipulated by Branden and others.

This is my least favorite installment of this series. Strangely enough as far as language it was the cleanest. Only one that I can recall and again no F-Bombs.

The mystery was predictable and made for a slow pace.

I am so done with the teenage daughter who is not a likable character and the Brandon/Tracy "romance" should really be retired. No one this immature and self-centered should be in a relationship. The boyfriend - Brandon - is even less likable.

It is still entertaining enough and clean enough that I plan to read the fourth one.

There is one gruesome scene but it last seconds and you can tell it's coming. I took my headphones out and right back in and it was done.

I enjoyed this book as much as the previous books in the series. My stomach was tense through most of the book. The family is still under attack and some people are making very bad decisions. Patrick and Suzanne are doing their best, trying to raise and protect their kids, but theirs is not a kind world.

There are several twists and turns in this book and a big who-dun-it, with several other story lines. I enjoy reading Ms. Hutchins books and look forward to each one.

I recommend this book.

Another winner from Pamela Fagan Hutchins! Bad luck seems to come in more than three's for the Flint family...who knew how many goings on can happen in a town in Wyoming in the 70’s? The family is in peril once again. Patrick (the Dad) is forced to become involved in solving a murder, Mom and teenage Daughter are called to testify in a dicey trial, Daughter is at risk for mayhem because of her boyfriend and by extension his family, and Son is a witness to homicide. Other richly drawn familiar characters return in this third story. A real whodunit!

Poor family...they are embroiled up to their necks in messes! Crazy family trying to keep them from testifying in a Capitol murder case with the death penalty on the table. The judge is being blackmailed since the previous judge died under odd circumstances. Keeps you on edge the whole book! Stayed up until 3:30 am to finish and read between the nod offs. Caution!! Don’t start reading before bedtime. Lol. Another great well written book in the series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book

Sawbones (Patrick Flint #3) written and narrated by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is the best in this 3 book series. This concludes the thrilling story of the kidnapping of Dr. Patrick Flint's teenaged daughter in and around the wild mountains of Wyoming. Each of the characters is dramatically developed. The scenery is described beautifully. The plot is convoluted and twists and turns are breath taking. This the second Hutchins' series I've listened to so far and won't be the last! The Mountain Lion is obviously Dr. Flint's spirit animal. Loved it!

Another page turning read in the Patrick Flint series.
Patrick doesn't want to pay for ski poles, so his wife and son are fighting the slopes with only half the equipment. Perry is in the wrong place at the wrong time, and sees something he shouldn't have.
Between Perry and Trish, it's a wonder the whole family hasn't been killed off.
Susanne gets herself into some serious trouble, and once again Patrick is doing everything in his power to save his family.
I love this series!

Hold on to your hats!

If you have read the two first books of this series, you will find this adventure a continuation of the storyline. You won't believe the heart pounding action and the intricately weaved web of relationships. By the authors own admission in the acknowledgements, she is writing from personal experience and that makes these stories more believable and fun to read.

Another novel of Patrick Flint, MD and his family. The Flint family are scheduled to testify at a trial. It appears someone does not want them to appear at the trial. A judge is dead made to look like a suicide. Another judges wife is shot and killed. Three of the Flint family get kidnapped. A novel to keep turning pages.
