Southern Lights #2

Tamarillo Tart

Rate this book
CASSIDY MARTIN is a country boy through and through. He loves his horses, his Lord of the Rings tourist business, and his isolated paradise at the foot of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Not that everyone appreciates the seclusion he craves. Take his ex-wife for example.

The sexy-as-hell guy on his latest tour might be whip-smart and push all of Cass’s buttons, but he’s about as country as a pair of Louboutins, and Cass has been there and done that. Broken heart with the T-shirt.

STEFAN HAMILTON doesn’t do ‘outdoorsy’, he’s a city boy, born and bred. The closest Stef gets to the country is ‘Cowboy Night’ at his favourite Auckland gay bar even if the music makes Stef want to rip his hair out by the roots.

But Stef is also a hardcore Lord of the Rings fanboy. So, when he gets the chance to go on a horse trek to the iconic film locations in the Southern Alps, he sucks up his fear of the gigantic animals and his allergy to camping for the chance to let his nerd flag fly. But when his mate pulls out at the last minute, Stef is left to negotiate the horses, the wrath of mother nature, and an inconvenient crush on the cowboy leading the tour.

City meets country and the sparks fly.

Excitingly exhausting. My goodness, that was almost a bit too much excitement. And I thought it was going to be slow and fluffy like the first book in the series ...
The plan was to read this book throughout the week. But then there was the first sex scene, which was so damn long that I was sucked in for ages and then some huge drama happened and I couldn't look away. I had to work at some point and I've rarely been so angry about my job, because the book was soooo much more important. I had to know what was going to happen and whether everything was going to end well.
Oh my ... it went on for so many pages and I was in a crazy frenzy because I absolutely had to get to the end of the drama before I could sleep ... I couldn't put the book down and fall asleep satisfied until I reached the epilogue.
Bad book, such a bad book!
I'm pretty happy. I can't really say much about this story except that I was insanely impressed. I'll have to read it again sometime and then waaaaay slowly to enjoy it properly.
I love the two main characters. At first I thought Stef's personality might be too much for me, but he turned out so perfectly after his superficially happy and exciting nature gained more depth.
And I love how Cass was able to overcome his insecurities despite his past, even if it took a bit of a strong push from Stef.
But everything, including the dramatic events, was very harmonious.
Oh yeah, the epilogue made me giggle like crazy. So, I think the story has a bit of everything and most of all wonderfully deep emotions, albeit being quite insta-ish.

“Is there a problem with the name?” Stef locked on to those sea-green eyes and couldn’t hold back a grin. God, the man was gorgeous. “Nope. But she’ll be the first and only woman I’ll ever ride.” He cocked his head. “Just saying.”
Tanner spluttered through the phone. “Stef! You did not just say that.”
Cass barked out a laugh. “I’ll be sure to warn her. Would you rather I gave you Gimli?”
It was Tanner’s turn to laugh. Fucker. “Ugh, all that hair.” Stef shuddered.
🤭🐴🤭

Cass turned Stef’s head from side to side, running his mouth and nose over every inch of Stef’s throat: nibbling his ear, breathing through his hair, rubbing his cheek along Stef’s temple, all the while murmuring how sexy Stef was, how beautiful, how hot, and all the delicious filthy and wonderful things Cass wanted to do to him, until the words had reduced Stef to a puddle of want, and need, and right the hell now. 🫠😳🫠

I think Jay Hogan is slowly working on a favorite spot with me ...

Ethan and Tanner from the first book have a nice little scene. But it is possible to read this book as a stand alone, I think.

Okay, I’ll admit it - insta-lust/love still isn’t my favourite trope. But you know what? The absolute gorgeous New Zealand setting and all the Lord of the Rings references more than made up for it. If you’re a fellow LOTR nerd like me, this book will hit that sweet spot in the best way.

Once I forced myself to forget that Cass and Stef had known each other for only a few hours, I actually really loved their dynamic. Cass constantly building Stef up, refusing to let his self-deprecating humor slide, and watching Stef being believed in and cherished was just… ugh, my heart. 🥹

And then there’s the WORSHIPPING. Hoooly fuck. Their first kiss and those early explorations? Hot as all hell. 🫦🫦

The drama worked surprisingly well for me, too - I could not stop reading during the storm scene and everything that came after 😳 Hello 3 a.m., long time no see.

Sure, the whole story unfolds over just a few days, and I definitely wouldn’t have minded a little more time with them after the dust settled. But the HEA left me so giddy I couldn’t stop smiling, so I’m not complaining too hard.

All in all, this was sexy, emotional, fun, full of LOTR goodness and set against one of the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable. Super keen to see where this series takes me next 🥰

Full review tomorrow when I'm at the laptop.

***

This just ticked all my boxes, turned on all my switches, tickled my fancy - you get the drift 😁

It's book two in Jay's latest New Zealand set series and it's a cracker, two radically different men, from backgrounds so far apart you'd never think they'd have common ground, but they just work.

And, while everything happens in just a couple of days, believe me the evidence is all there in the page for that whammy of emotional connection which comes when you meet the person who makes your heart race and other parts tremble 😉

Stef is book one MC Tanner's best friend, he's a jeweller, he's ultra femme, he's out and proud and sassy and secretly hides the bruised romantic he is at heart.

Cass is all rugged cowboy masculinity, he's bi but not out at home, he's also hurting from being dumped by his ex-wife, who found she couldn't leave the city behind after they escaped their home town for university.

But adversity makes strange bedfellows and the undeniable sexual chemistry between them morphs into something much deeper when an unexpected powerful thunderstorm throws them into an emergency.

I loved how insular this book got with the focus drilling down to just Stef and Cass as they dealt with all the heightened hormones which resulted from the situation.

There's actually a surprisingly little amount of angst in this one, given that it could have been massively over dramatic, but it just flowed beautifully from one moment to the next. Not everything is plain sailing though, and I liked how realistic it felt with the conclusions drawn.

Now I can't wait to get book three and we finally find out about Ethan's barista and what secrets he's been hiding!

And yes, I loved it all over again. Stef's sass and Cass's genuine 'nice guy' vibes did it for me. Still a bit undersold about the timeframe, but it's a small niggle.

original review

I really enjoyed this one, more so than book 1.

Maybe that’s because the situations the MCs find themselves in are more serious.
Maybe it’s because I was amazed that the author sold me a relationship that ’developed’ over two days in somewhat believable terms.

Maybe it was the stunning scenery all around.
I think Jay Hogan should get an acknowledgement, if not some kind of agent’s fee from the New Zealand Tourist Board, because I basically slavered over the descriptions of the landscape’s beauty and peace! And those very descriptions create a lovely atmosphere of quiet and connection to nature.

As for Cass and Stef, I really liked them. Stef, with all his sass, but also so quietly vulnerable, and Cass with all his mountain man, strong and reliable vibes. And the ‘town meets country’ trope usually works for me!

I also have to say that I do appreciate the author’s humour and her inventive imagery. I think she could make an ambiguous joke out of virtually anything! In the most hilarious manner!

Lovely book!

I was so well entertained with this light contemporary MM romance. It’s a standalone among this series “Southern Lights” where the romances, relationship-oriented, happen at the feet of New Zealand Southern Alps.

This time, it’s the story of Stef, Tanner’s best friend – MC of book 1 - who came to visit for a few days and ends up in a 2-days-horse trek where the movies of “Lord of the Rings” were filmed. Stef is not for outdoor activities, he never dreamed of approaching a horse, but he never backs up from a challenge, that’s for sure. And bonus for him : Cass, the trek guide, is “candy on a stick” and quite amused by Stef’s sassiness. The blurb is right on the spot to explain what this is about : “City meets country and the sparks fly” !!!

I laughed a lot with the banter between Stef and Cass, I enjoyed the smoking hot chemistry between these two and the sense of place made for a nice background. And big surprise, even though I’m not a huge fan of the “BAM factor”, ie love at first sight, here, it went totally well, with a very good epilogue.

Yes, this confirms that I enjoy the writing, the sexiness, the banter and the characters Jay Hogan comes up with. It’s engaging, and was, once again, greatly satisfying for me !!

I've given this a B+ at AAR, so that's 4.5 stars

Tamarillo Tart is book two in Jay Hogan’s  Southern Lights  series of contemporary romances set around Queenstown and the Southern Alps on New Zealand’s South Island.  It’s a well-written opposites-attract romance in which two very different men find an intense mutual attraction developing into something much more, and one of them discovers an inner strength and determination he never knew he had when a short overnight trip turns into the journey from hell.

Stef Hamilton has agreed – on sufferance – to join his best friend Tanner and Tanner’s boyfriend Ethan ( Powder and Pavlova ) on a short horse-trek into the Southern Alps mostly, he tells Tanner, because he wanted Ethan not to think your best friend was a prissy dork.  Stef is absolutely not the outdoorsy type – he’s a snarky city boy with attitude to spare and a tongue that can wound at fifty paces, the closest he comes to a cowboy is Cowboy Night at his favourite gay bar, and he loves his designer clothes and mortgage-worthy hair products.  He’s also a huge Lord of the Rings fanboy, and Ethan specifically arranged the trip to take in of the locations used in the movies, assuring Stef that his friend, Cass – Cassidy – Martin will be the perfect guide for someone who hasn’t ridden before (well, not on horseback at least!) and is nervous around horses.  Stef isn’t best pleased when Tanner has to cancel at the last minute due to a work emergency, although Stef’s first sight of the six-foot-six, tousle-haired, sex-on-legs tour guide does go some way towards mitigating his annoyance.  Never one to let the grass grow under his feet, Stef wastes no time in getting his flirt on, despite Ethan’s assurance that Cass is straight.

Cass is amused rather than put off by Stef’s humour and matches him quip for quip, not batting an eyelid at his more outrageous pronouncements.  He’d never thought someone like Stef – sleek, styled and sassy – would be his type, but something about him absolutely pushes his buttons and then some.  Cass quickly senses that Stef’s devil-may-care snarky attitude is a tough outer shell, and that starts him wondering what it’s covering up but he reminds himself just as quickly that it’s none of his business.  It’s a two-day trek and then Stef, and the temptation he presents, will be gone.

Once arrived at the stables with the other two members of their tour, Cass introduces Stef to his mount – Arwen –  and things go pretty well, in spite of the fact that one of the other guys in their small group of four is a homophobic arsehole.  After they set off, Stef is able to overcome his initial fear and nervousness and actually starts enjoying the ride – and the spectacular scenery and the equally spectacular cowboy eye-candy certainly don’t hurt.

The first part of the story focuses on the interactions between Stef and Cass, and on Stef gradually revealing the softer, more reflective side of himself he hides behind his outer fabulousness.  Both men are surprised at the strength of the connection they’re feeling after such a short time and know they’re completely mismatched – Cass can’t think of anyone less suitable for him to be interested in – and yet they each see something in the other that draws them together.  They find themselves talking about things they’ve rarely – if ever – shared with anyone else; a failed relationship a few years earlier that really put a dent in Stef’s self-confidence, the fact that he’s never really felt he fit in, not only in being gay, but also in not being the type most gay guys go for (“I’m what they mean when they say ‘no fems’ on Grindr”) – while Cass talks about his failed marriage, and why he hasn’t come out to his family since his divorce.  I liked Cass’ fierce defence of Stef in the face of Stef’s frequent self-deprecation; Stef is so used to being thought of as someone who is unable to cope with difficult shit that he’s bought into that view of himself, but Cass is able to see through to the real Stef, the one who’s tougher than he looks and thinks he is.  It’s going to take more than a few pep-talks to completely convince Stef of that, even though he does begin to realise that by doing what he’s doing – horse-riding, camping, and all that outdoorsy stuff – he’s already going some way to proving the truth of what Cass says.  When disaster strikes – with Cass injured, a terrible weather front coming in and no way back to base – it’s Stef who steps up and into the breach, taking over and directing the other tour members and coming up with a plan to get them out, terrified all the time that he doesn’t know what he’s doing, but holding it together and doing what he can for Cass while they wait for rescue.

The chemistry between Stef and Cass is smoking and their attraction heats up quickly, but the author also shows that there’s more to whatever is growing between them through their conversations and the confidences they share.  Both men acknowledge the speed at which the connection grows between them and are surprised by it, but the thing I really liked about the way things eventually play out (after a bit of a late-book mis-step on Cass’ part) is that the main story ends on a solid HFN, with both Stef and Cassidy deciding that regardless of the fact they’ve not known each other very long, whatever is between them is something special and they both want to give it a chance.  The HEA is cemented in the epilogue, but I really liked that what could so easily have been insta-love was instead a mutual and mature decision to try to make a relationship work in the long term.

Once again, the author’s descriptions of the spectacular scenery are vivid and have me jonesing to get down there to see it all for myself, and the small secondary cast is well-written especially Cass’ friend (and his father’s girlfriend), Dee, who is clear-sighted and wonderfully supportive.

Snarky, sexy, poignant and sweet, Tamarillo Tart boasts a pair of engaging, three-dimensional leads, plenty of humour, warmth and insight, and a chemistry-laden romance without too much internalised drama and angst (the plot has enough drama to keep things interesting!)  It’s another thoroughly enjoyable read from Jay Hogan, and I’m happy to recommend it.

Stef is in town to visit his best friend, Tanner who relocated after finding the "love of his life". They received as a gift, a tour of Stef’s favorite movie location in New Zealand by Tanner’s boyfriend, Ethan. It was a tour of "The Lord of the Rings" movie locations and sets. At the last minute, Tanner had to drop out but persuades Stef to go ahead and go. The problem is, Stef hates camping, and is terrified of horses. But he’s already at the pick-off point and the Tour Guide, Cass, has seen him.

Cass is an amazing Tour Guide. He prides himself of the kind of experience their clients get when they go on their tours. His family owns a few hundred/thousand acres of land that encompasses some parts of the most scenic spots in this part of New Zealand, including those that were part of some really big movie productions. Seth is an accountant that handles three accounts of Cass's businesses. Cass loves what he does, especially the horses and so he guides the tours himself.

Fellings are being hidden from his father by Cass that will soon blow wide open. Before Stef, he never considered showing anyone his feelings for guys...AND women. A bad storm and an accident will change the lives of both Seth and Cass.

The last part of the story will have you holding your breath and waiting for the bottom to drop out of Seth and Casses budding attraction. It was a sweet story of true love that only comes one time in your life...worth any risk just to be with the one you are meant to be with...no matter what obstacles are thrown in the path. Really enjoyable story in spite of the several times my heart almost stopped...and a great job of reading by Gary Furlong.

I have to say I absolutely loved Stef's collection of t-shirts!!! Reminded me of my own collection I had when I was a teenager.

Stef and Cass's relationship develops really quickly in a pressure cooker environment - it is pretty much instalove, but they go through a harrowing and life threatening event together that forms a really solid bond in a very short amount of time. Even though they moved from strangers to being in a commited relationship within a few days, it made sense because they had been in a unique set of circumstances where they'd had to get to know each other and Stef had had to care for Cass and problem solve when he was so completely out of his depth.

I would have liked to see more of them together though because essentially the majority of the book is set over a 48 hour period where Cass is unconscious for half of it! Then all of a sudden it's the epilogue and I just wanted to see their relationship in the beginning stages when neither of them was about to die!

***2023. Audio Review to follow***

4.5 stars from me...and the only reason it didn't get the full complement of stars is cos I did get a little bored with the horse trek into the mountains I have to say [let's just say horses and I don't mix 😉...and speaking of which, are we going to get Tomas' story at some stage? I'd LOVE him to shock that bigoted arse of a brother Andrew into complete silence, ☺]. I knew from the little we got to see of Stef in book 1 Powder & Pavlova that he was a sassy femme character I could definitely get into, and actually mentioned him in my review of that particular story. To think that he would meet some sort of Greek God [or should that be Geek God] cowboy whilst he was on the trip to South Island...and Lake Wakatipu

certainly wasn't something either he [or I] expected. Loved Stef's snark, his T-shirts, the chicken names and Jay's writing as a whole. He and Cass were so well suited, and I was a very happy bunny indeed with the ending.

Great timing with the reading of this one too...our lockdown viewing pleasure at this precise moment is yet another showing of LOTR [extended version]; The Two Towers to be exact. What can I say?? A girl's got to get her Aragorn and Legolas fix when she can...

I cannot wait to visit New Zealand and immerse myself in the whole LOTR experience...yes, you could say I'm a bit of a geek as far as all things hobbit and elf are concerned.

I really liked the first book in this series, so needles no need to say, I was excited about reading this one as well.

I do have to be honest and admit that I liked the setting and descriptions of the New Zealand landscape and mountains a bit more than the story, but I don't think I can be blamed, after all, I would love to go on a horseback riding tours that take you to Lord of the Rings filming locations.

The romance was very insta-lust/love with a side of a very dramatic accident, but it was somehow still believable; there is not much angst in the relationship, and the epilogue was lovely.

The cowboy and the jeweler learn where they belong!

In kiwi country, New Zealand, we get an exciting, fun story !
Tanner and Ethan set up their friend for this weekend adventure.
Sassy and pampered, Stefan, a long haired, eyelinered cutie,

a jewelry maker, has shown up for his LOTR Tour. He’s a Lord of the Rings fanatic.
Cass, 37, rugged, muscled cowboy,

with shaggy strawberry blonde hair, has horses and runs the tour.

Two other guys are on this tour, and one is a grouch. But how will Stefan handle a horse and the rugged setting ?
It’s funny, snarky, and interesting, as we see the guys flirt, tell stories, and learn about each other, in a shot amount of time. Our men are opposites.

Our two guys get a night of sizzling sex, that is more than the men have ever experienced.

Then a tragedy hits the group, and while the two clients go for help, Stefan stays by Cass while he’s unconscious.

Much is involved now with suspense and survival during the stormy flood.
When they get back, what will happen as Cass recovers and Stefan will need to go home?

This is fun, serious, sexy and wonderful. The friends and families are included and thoughtful.
I liked this very much.
I highly recommend it.
ENJOY !

BR with my girl Cass!

I’m sure this story would be a winner for a lot of people. But for me personally, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

My issues were in the traveling aspect and how the narrator portrayed Stef. I have no problem with femme characters, I can usually relate to them, the sassier the better. But the way Gary Furlong portrays these characters makes them a bit maddening, they come off as rude and hateful.

I’m kinda kicking myself for listening rather than reading. Not only for that aspect but also because I was never pulled into the story. I never felt a connection that kept my attention.

Overall take my review with a grain of salt. If you take away anything from this, read the book, don’t listen to the audio. Er, whatever. You do you!

I love the way that Jay Hogan writes, she draws you into beautiful love stories and this one is no exception. Her descriptions of the New Zealand 'Tolkein coutryside' are so very well done. I'm no fan of the Lord of the Rings stories (sorry 😮), but this story made me want to rush out and buy the books!

Both Stef and Cass (be still my beating heart 😍), have been burned by past lovers, but in this beautiful romance they end up healing one other. This is such a sweet story, up there with this lady's best. The emotions leapt off the page, and there was so much love here between Cass and Stef throughout. Added to this, every single one of the characters are well written, and the dialogue was excellent.

I really loved the epilogue which finished the book off very well, it was both funny and swoonworthy. This is a story about fate, love, trust and ultimately finding a new happiness. The characters were strong and the writing flowed beautifully. Like I said previously, the book is also full of great supporting characters that add their own charm( I'm hoping Tomas will eventually get his own story. Take note Ms Hogan 😉). 'Taramillo Tart' was a real page turner, easily read in a single sitting (I read it overnight, and didn't put it down til 6am!). Quite simply, it's a beautiful must read!

Update 06.03.2022.

Nie, nie zmieniam zdania po drugim czytaniu - ciągle piąteczka 😁

* * * * * * *

Mam słabość do tych pyskatych.

Stef Hamilton, best friend of Tanner the MC In Book 1 of this Jay Hogan, ‘Southern Lights Series, has been invited on a Horse riding trip with Tanner, into the Mountains. The trip will take them to all the places where the ‘Lord of The Rings’ was filmed.

Stef agrees to go because he is a huge fan of LOTR. Only problem is Stef has a huge fear of horses, doesn’t t like the isolation of countryside or mountains. Stef is a high maintenance, fabulous femme, likes his green nail polish, guy-liner, and has a penchant for T-shirts featuring naughty suggestions.

Cass Martin runs the Horse Riding Trips into the mountains in Southland, NZ. He shares the ranch with his father who raises sheep on the land. Following his divorce from his wife, he has settled down to run his Horse Riding business during the season and has his own Accountancy business to keep business afloat.

While waiting to pick up his client for the trip, his eyes notice this tall, dark haired, gorgeous looking man chatting on his cell phone. He can’t help but laugh at the one sided conversation he hears. Stef has just heard that Tanner can’t make the trip and that Stef will have to go on his own. He spots the truck from the Ranch waiting to collect him and some of his anger dissipates when he notices the giant Cowboy, step from the vehicle.

Right from the get-go these two guys have something happening between them. The banter and sarcasm from Stef is unfiltered and hilarious. The antics between Stef and his horse is so sweet and funny. Cass can’t help himself falling for this ‘live wire city boy’ from Auckland.

Two brothers, Andrew and Tomas Murchison are also on the trip. Both are experienced riders. Andrew is displaying some homophobic attitude towards Stef, despite his brother Tomas showing some interest in Stef. Cass is keeping watchful eye on this situation.

Despite the speed of their attraction Cass and Stef’s chemistry is undeniable and leads to some steamy activities in the hay barn.

But an unexpected change in the weather happens during the trip and an accident happens, Stef has to step up and do a rescue mission which he hasn’t a clue how to carry out.

As with many of Jay’s NZ series there isn’t too much angst, there’s is always a way forward if the protagonists are willing to fight for it.

Tamarillo Tart is the second book in Jay Hogan's Southern Lights series, which is currently is shooting to the top of my favorite series of hers (compared to Auckland Med).

The spotlight turns to Tanner's sassy best friend, Stefan "Stef" Hamilton. When Tanner is unable to accompany Stef for a pre-booked Lord of the Rings horse tour, Stef is forced to go alone. Born and bred city boy, riding horse and doing 'outdoors' is not exactly Stef's idea of fun, even if he's an LOTR nerd. Although the gorgeous six-foot-six cowboy tour leader might console Stef out of his 'misery'.

Cassidy "Cass" Martin is proud of his horse tourist business. He also enjoys the isolated feel of the New Zealand Southern Alps. Not everyone can appreciate it, and for sure the sexy city boy that is his latest tour client. So Cass has no idea why he wants to get down and dirty with Stef. Especially he hasn't exactly come out as bisexual to his family and friends on his farm.

...

Jay Hogan, you wonderful author, you! 🤩

Once again, Hogan wins me over with her story. While the romance is, well, a fast-turn-roller-coaster for sure, Hogan is able to weave the forced proximity trope wrapped it with gorgeous description to the landscape, the SENSUAL tension, and oh GOD the DELIGHTFUL banters and flirting between Stef and Cass. J'adore!

I loved it the most when two characters become the best/improved version of themselves because of the romance. Not a complete make-over, mind you, but the seeds are there, and the romance nudges those hiding traits to the surface. In this case, Stef steps up to be AMAZING.

I think Stef hides his insecurities with his sass and attitude. Stef seems to think that he's not strong, masculine enough (though he doesn't deny it), that he's just a city boy, he's just a jeweller by trade... but Stef shows his strength and determination in this tour. Also later when Cass being rather an idiot, of course.

Cass might need to catch up with Stef's development, in my opinion. Cass biggest challenge, I think, is to live his full life as a bisexual guy, and reaches out for what he wants the most. Cass' previous relationship failed spectacularly because his ex-wife didn't want to live in the farm. So Cass thinks why bother trying; no one understands his passion and willing to stay with him anyway.

So yes, I loved both men (though Stef won my heart more). I loved the horses. I loved the supporting characters (happy to see Tanner and Ethan again). All I can say, I cannot WAIT for the next book, which will be about Ethan's grumpy barista. BRING ON ADRIAN'S STORY. MY HEART IS READY!!

Yes, I want to hold your hand. I want to touch your face, and kiss your lips, and wrap you in my arms, and turn you over this damn hay bale and bury myself so deep that I can’t feel anything but you, inside and out, filling every goddamn empty space in my life. I want you. I want your heart… goddammit

Holy Shamoly ❤️‍🔥

Stef and Cass.

This was a hoot from start to finish. Lol I chuckled my way through this one and omg it’s so funny. The sexy vibes are bouncing off these two when the city boy meets the country boy and lol it was enough to scorch my kindle ❤️‍🔥 oof they’re hot, their relationship is fast when Stef and Cass fall for each other in just two days. Once again this is set in New Zealand and it weaves around the Lord of the Rings characters, which I enjoyed.

I loved both men. I loved Stef’s vibrant personality and caustic wit, lol his sass is just perfect and Cass is a tall, delicious, hot cowboy and hell who doesn’t love a smokin hot cowboy 🤠

Absolutely gorgeous.
The setting is amazing. Stef and Cass are super adorable together. This is a whirlwind romance but I found it completely believable.
If you like sassy city boys, semi-closeted cowboys, great scenery, hurt/comfort (but little angst), and great writing, then you'll love this.

Jay Hogan is an author that’s new to me but one who’s other books I’m eager to explore after how much I enjoyed this one.
The bulk of the relationship between Cass and Stef developed over two days. But it was so well-done from their banter right at the outset of the LOTR tour—even with the unexpected changes—right up until that first night (less than 24 hours later). They both knew their connection went deeper than mere attraction yet, despite that, they both might have let things go had events not escalated because of a storm, spooked horses and a homophobic a-hole. Cass was already uplifting Stef—who he saw with more clarity than Stef expected or allowed— and, with New Zealand’s stunning scenery that I think the author captured beautifully and Stef’s equine terror, they were inadvertently bonding by that first night.
Then once events took a turn, Stef stepped up despite his misgivings. And with the ample time he had to think, it allowed him to avoid any rash decisions. Both MCs were love-shy, but the way it was all handled in the end felt realistic. Stef had learned more about himself than expected, but he did not make a complete personality shift. There would still be things he needed. And Cass learned that people are different, that he did not have to close himself off to romantic prospects. (There are a few pages of avoidante behavior but it did not feel out of character nor was it dragged out unnecessarily.)
I thought the author’s writing was great, her imagery beautiful and humor delightful. I also loved the conversation on bisexuality. It definitely resonated in its accuracy. I would definitely recommend this one.

At first I liked this book just fine, it didn't wow me. I was wondering if this book just doesn't work for me. At the halfway mark, when the drama started, I liked it way more. It bumped it from a 3 to a 4 star for me. Still it's not my favorite but I can see why people like it.

My biggest issue was probably Stef. I have nothing against him, actually I like him. He was very brave when he fought for their relationship. I admired him for it. I just don't enjoy reading Sassy characters that always have a witty comeback. And he was the perfect example for that.
I liked Cass way more but he annoyed sometimes. When he got all sappy and pined for Stef was lovely though.
Overall they are a cute couple and I LOVED the epilogue!!

I loved the T-shirt collection too! They all sounded amazing!
Bonus points for using the metric system.

There were some unnecessary fat phobic comments (fat phobic comments are always unnecessary) that pissed me off.

There's something about this author's writing that I just like. I can't ever really articulate why because the stories aren't super original but they just give me a lot of enjoyment.

This one has an older (37 yo) sassy as hell, city guy who goes on a tour in the mountain area of New Zealand where Lord of the Rings was filmed and basically falls for this awesome guy who lives for his horses and the countryside. Some stuff happens and there's an HEA. I mean on the surface it's not like it's an epic romance story and the angst isn't even hurt/comfort. It is just a well written story with characters that I like and it's just that simple.

I don't think I have read anything of this author's that I haven't liked so far.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3 stars

This story is more difficult for me as I have enjoyed Jay Hogan’s work in the past. I also enjoyed both Stef and Cassidy as characters, but felt that they stumbled into a story that needed more attention to details. The setup was fairly standard with two opposite men, one from the city, one from the country, meeting up and the attraction is instant. However, it went a little past instant attraction here and, while I am okay with well-done instalove, Stef and Cass only spent two incomplete days together and were then making life altering plans.

Stef was introduced in Powder and Pavlova as Tanner’s best friend and, while Tanner and Ethan do make an appearance here, this book works okay on its own. We didn’t get to see Stef’s full on sassy attitude in the earlier book and his personality was able to be on full display here and he’s the opposite to Cass’ more quiet side. Stef is full on out, while Cass had been married to a woman and never felt it necessary to let anyone know he is bisexual. Cass doesn’t have any issue that he is attracted to Stef, he just knows how difficult a relationship could be due to geography.
