Standing stones built into an ancient church, a lost undercover detective and a dangerous gang trading treasures from the past. Can Bill Scathlock save his friend’s life before his cover gets blown?
DI Bill Scathlock thought he’d seen the last of his troubled DS, Danny Sawaski, but he wasn’t expecting him to disappear altogether! The Polish gang Danny was infiltrating are trafficking people to bring ancient artefacts to them, but those people aren’t the usual victims, and neither is where they’re coming from. With archaeologist friend Nick Robbins helping, Bill investigates, but why do people only appear at the old church, and who is the mad priest seen with the gang? With Danny’s predicament getting ever more dangerous, the clock is ticking if Bill is to save him before he gets killed by the gang ...or arrested by his old colleagues!
Time’s Bloodied Gold is the first paranormal mystery featuring DI Bill Scathlock. If you love Phil Rickman’s Merrily Watkins series and James Oswald’s Inspector McLean stories, or Ben Aranovich’s Rivers of London series, you’ll definitely want to read this.

L. J. Hutton's books are always so well researched and this one was no exception. A troubled detective sergeant is transferred out of his unit and is sent deep undercover. Unfortunately, a fellow officer also wanted the assignment (for selfish reasons) and is deeply jealous of his usurper. He then does everything he can to compromise the assignment and puts his colleague in mortal danger. The detective sergeant has to infiltrate a gang of ruthless individuals who are dealing in 'stolen' historical artefacts along with a bit of human trafficking. The historical artefacts in question are being transported into 21st century England through a time portal, opened by a demonic Catholic priest, who is Hell bent on reinstating the infamous Inquisition and embarking upon another series of Crusades. He too has come through a time portal and is quite mad but, extremely cruel and dangerous. This was a real page turner of a story, mainly a police procedural tale but with a paranormal backdrop. Highly recommended!
Where to start? Absolutely brilliant book! I've read some of the authors other books and enjoyed them all. I could not put this down, the characters are wonderful.
One of the best books I’ve read. Loved the history behind it and the characters. Very different with twists and intrigue. This author never fails to disappoint love these type of books.
I really enjoyed this. It's constructed and told in an interesting way, from different times in the story and different viewpoints, but managed so well there's no chance of the reader getting lost and it really ratchets up the excitement as the two narratives begin to converge. The characterisation is great and minor characters have enough back story to be solid and believable. I also like the fact that it recognises how a few true villains draw in other people who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bill Scathlock is a character I shall keep an eye on!
