No one knows about them. No one is ready. The false gods are coming.
In seven days, I have to surrender myself to a demon.
That was what I agreed to. That was the price to rescue a teenage girl.
What would you do with your last week? My plan to drink good whisky and relax got shot to hell within hours when the police, who hate me by the way, begged for my help. They have a murder with… strange circumstances.
I only need one look at the pictures to know they look like werewolf wounds. Could the killer we are chasing be my friend the snarky werewolf? I certainly hope not because I’m not sure he can be stopped.
As I chase across Europe, with my time running out, the body count continues to rise. That’s not my only problem though. Clandestine organisation, The Alliance, are enacting their own agenda, which seems to include me whether I like it or not, the rescued girl’s father wants to sue me, and the demon I killed is back to get his revenge.
It’s going to be a tough week.
The Realm of False Gods series features multiple protagonists, each with their own series of stories as the Earth discovers a secret long forgotten and twisted with time. The coming cataclysm will slowly draw them together to face the greatest challenge the world has ever faced.
Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
Solid continuation of the previous story. Characters will be back in later stories, but this one comes to somewhat of a conclusion. Like the first one, a very quick read.
Our wizard is learning more tricks in elemental magic, and some have certainly got me thinking also. The action is fast paced in this story also - probably the author's style. Heike is a solid female character, and I hope she continues to be part of the story.
No spoilers, but some major stuff hits the fan in this story. The next book is about Zachary and possibly other werewolves. He was his over-the-top wisecracking self in this one - I'm not sure this could be sustained for a whole story. Reading more will have to wait, I'm going to take a break from the series to discuss the first two books with the rest of the club.
I have seen all of the 5 star ratings and rave reviews for this series and I'm afraid I just don't get it. My copy of the book didn't seem to have the "laugh out loud" bits others mentioned.
I really did like Zachary and Heike, but I felt like Otto spent a lot of time putting other characters down - perhaps he needed to compensate for something...
His description of Heike and another female officer was just offensive - "Heike Dressler is a mother of four in her later 30s… A little spreading and softening had occurred from the multiple pregnancies; it set her apart from women like Corinna Rugler, who was only a handful of years younger but still firm and appealing." Heike was brave, smart, resourceful and risked everything for him but, sadly, wasn't appealing enough for him
This probably wasn't the worst series I have started, but it is definitely one I will not finish.
A true page turner. It contains humour, I laughed out loud and made the cat jump, I gasped and held my breath but I never stopped reading. I love this book, the characters are very real the story is compelling and I can’t wait to read the next one
4.25 stars, series begins to hit it's stride now---first two books are basically 1 larger volume that was edited into two; good start for this series, hope to read more though!
This is book 2 of A wizard in Bremen Part 2 in The Realm of False Gods. The story takes place in the German town of Bremen. This is the same town where the Brothers Grimm placed their fairy tale of "Town Musicians of Bremen”. Not that they have anything to do with each other, but it did stop me trying to figure out where I knew Bremen Germany from.
So, this is a continuation of Untethered Magic and focus’s on the one week period before Otto has to go back to the Immortal Realm. And because he really does want to help people, he gets into all kinds of hot water. Strange happenings notwithstanding, Otto is a very busy man. That wasn’t the plan.
I have to recommend this book. If you’re an Urban Fantasy junkie, this needs you to read it. Now you can be like me and read it first, before Book 1, (don’t do it that way), but it leaves too many unanswered questions. Read Untethered Magic first, then continue with Unleashed Magic. You won’t be sorry.
Otto Schneider is sourly contemplating his future by purchasing decadent foodstuffs he normally avoids when his phone rings. Much to his astonishment, the caller is Chief Muller of the Bremen police, seeking his help in a new and especially grisly crime — and given what Otto recently experienced, he knows it must be awful.
It is. A pimp was disemboweled in an alley, just a few feet from his car, in what was clearly an otherworldly attack. Unlike the pigheaded Detective Inspector Schenk, Muller was convinced of supernatural threats by their previous case and realizes he needs Otto’s help to solve this murder.
Considerably more polite than when they last met, Muller introduces Otto to his teammates — headed by Schenk, they include Heike, the still-traumatized Klaus Nieswand, and two young detectives, Rugler and Moltz, along with an arrogant SIA lieutenant, Voss, who arrived before the murder was an hour old. Although Otto refuses to believe his new friend is capable of such savagery, Heike reminds Otto he has to consider Zachary, as he’s the only creature capable of such carnage that they know of in the area. However, Otto knows Zachary doesn’t consider himself a killer of humans — he previously surrendered to the SIA because he didn’t want to kill officers fighting his way out of an ambush — and knows another werewolf has to be responsible for the murders.
Otto is also struggling with ill health — he passes his condition off to Heike and his colleagues as a winter cold, but when he tries to visit his comatose wife, Kerstin, he’s stopped by the duty nurse and later stunned by what seems an improbable diagnosis by senior doctors. He eventually realizes what caused his condition, but that makes it no less improbable.
Meanwhile, the immortal realm is roiled — a demon enraged by a settlement brokered by Daniel invades the mortal world to wreak havoc on the family of his previous victim, determined to seize what he considers his property. Otto battles the situation into a stalemate until, much to his surprise, an apologetic Daniel appears to collect the fiend, which is when Otto recognizes that Katja was targeted because, like him twenty years earlier, she has budding magical powers. Katja asks Otto to train her, and he resolves to do what he can in the little time remaining.
Yet more killings emerge — another man associated with Bremen’s sex trade, as well as a lead — an elderly man was slaughtered in the Czech Republic city of Brno, and his niece, who lived with him, is missing and presumed dead. Additionally, another man and an unidentifiable young woman are found stuffed in the trunk of an abandoned vehicle, both clearly victims of the same killer. However, the uncle and niece have no association with the sex trade, unlike the other murders.
As male bodies multiply in Bremen, a clearly infuriated Schenk sends Otto and Heike on what he considers a humiliating diversion— the duo is dispatched to Brno to examine evidence and consult with the police, even though the information has been emailed to Schenk by the time their plane lands in the Czech Republic. Although the reserved mother of the missing girl begrudges their visit, Otto gleans enough evidence to point him toward the teenager, Zuzana, although he fears she may already be dead — his compass point indicates a body’s physical location, not its state of existence — and that leads him and Heike to Prague.
Although their consultation with a local police officer seems pointless, the information begins to bear fruit as the pair heads back to Bremen, and by the time they arrive at HQ, the wizard believes he and Heike are on the correct path. When he’s drawn into a literal battle between good and evil, part of his hunch is confirmed, but the rest of the revelation is so damning that Otto can’t believe he missed so many clues.
With time drawing down by the second, Otto refuses to surrender to despair, embracing a new aspect of existence while accepting what appears to be his own death. He is, in all respects, the archetypal Steve Higgs hero, a soldier in the war between good and evil, fighting on the front lines and putting his welfare of those he defends before his own.
What a blast! I had soo much fun reading this book. I literally resented it every time I had to do anything that took me away from reading it.
This was the most fun whilst reading that I have had since the first book in the series! I thought then that the series had the potential to be amazing and a sure fire winner and now I am convinced of it!
The action is explosive, cleverly crafted and all the action scenes offer something different from the previous one.
I find the lead character Otto totally cool and clever. He stands out because he doesn't think too highly of himself, and only refers to himself as a wizard as there is no other word that describes him and his skill set better. I love his whole attitude; the way he runs toward danger and takes responsibility for each situation that is beyond the police and doesn't let anything they do stop him. Even arresting him seems to have little impact on him for very long. The police doubt the truth about Otto; that he can do magic. So arrest him they do, but hold him, not so much. He finds that things are changing for him, he seems to be able to do things even he didn't realise he could do, and it's not a moment too soon, because a werewolf is killing people and no one is able to catch it but Otto. Plus there is a demon or two after him, and he is finding he has less and less time to visit his wife in hospital. He only has limited time left, simply because he gave his word to one of the demons, he has a set time left on Earth, and then he must go to the demon to become his servant. Life sure is busy for him. He's in demand everywhere!
I really liked the new angles this story had in it; it made for great reading. The plot in this one has thickened a lot. More baddies, old friends and some awkward police officers into the mix, but Otto deals with them all whilst trying to keep not only himself alive but his friends, and the police, if they would just listen to him for five minutes. There were enough surprises in this story to make things interesting and a few explosive fight scenes all over the place that are absolutely thrilling.
I think if it was possible, I would give this book way more than a measly 5 stars. It deserves more for the entertainment value of this book.

This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I wanted to like this, the story fundamentally was one that should keep you coming back for more but there were at least three instances with language or plot that make me think no more for this series.
Chapter 3: ...spreading and softening..set her apart from women like CR who was only a handful of years younger but still firm and appealing. You've described Heike as a formidable woman who takes no prisoners and runs her home and then put her down in a single sentence as unappealing because she had four pregnancies.
Chapter 8: we were alone in the car and no one else could hear us.. ..she was nearly a woman at 15...I doubted anyone would approve of me spending alone time with an attractive fifteen year old girl. Especially not if I ever referred to her out loud as attractive. She's 15, he's at least 35 if not more as I'm sure he refers to having been an investigator for twenty years so this is disturbing.
Chapter 22: while I do that you need to get your leggings off, I want to check your toes haven't got frostbite. Not needed but then to lead to a storyline about fake charge of attempted rape of a minor and more offensive language in jail cell scene - sorry but this doesn't sit well.
Too much in here was disturbing and I'm not prepared to read further to see if the author reins it in.
*3.5 Stars* Unleashed Magic is the second book in the series and a couple more characters were either introduced or developed into more principal ones, such as Zachary and Heike. I really enjoyed Zachary's character, and athough I had some laugh-out-loud moments, I did feel like it was a bit over-the-top at times. Heike was a nice surprise; although we were introduced to her character in the first book, we learned a lot more and so far, she is one of my favourites, almost to the point where I wish she had the magical powers as that would have been so much fun.
Otto was back to save the day again, but although we learned more about him, there were things that definitely did touch a raw nerve on my end and this mostly had to do with his thoughts regarding women. Really? Although they are the author's descriptions, they are from Otto's viewpoint, so I wasn't too impressed with his thoughts regarding Heiki even though he really liked her. She is one of the bravest and smartest people in this series so far, so to criticize her because she looks matronly? Seriously!!
Unleashed Magic: A Wizard in Bremen Part 2 is the second book in The Realm of False Gods series and continues the story of Otto Schneider and his fight against evil.
This story is a real page-turner that you don't want to miss. This second in series has so much to it... humour, snark, action, good vs evil, demons, magic, a serial killer, unbelieving police. Otto is trying to do his best to help mankind before his time expires and he has to surrender to the demon. His power is growing stronger and more varied. Otto has a knack for making both friends and enemies.
This is a fabulous read and I cannot wait for the next one in the series. I read and reviewed this book with no obligation.
A great follow up to Untethered Magic! As the story begins to come together and explain elements introduced in the first book I found myself so engrossed that I stayed awake far past when I should've to finish this one. Some twists and mystery were introduced (which I love to read about) and the way things were revealed about events that happened in book 1 had kept me enticed!
Character wise, Otto is definitely a lot more patient with arrogant people than I would be had I had the power that he does. With the time restraint he was given, I would have been far more likely to put people like Herr Weber in their place than he was. I'm curious to see if this plays out in his favor in the rest of the series.
This is the second book in this series and is just as awesome at the first. Otto has learned that his powers are better than ever, but he has an appointment to be Daniel's familiar. A killer werewolf is on the loose and he and Heike are going after it. Otto is worried that it is his friend Zachary. Now his body is changing and he has two different blood cells being generated by his body. What changes will occur in his body and his powers as he starts to figure out what has happened. Danger, serial murders, battles with paranormals and immortals, and a date with a demon all make it impossible to put this book down. A must read.
The Realm of False Gods series is an amazing series with tons of surprises! Book 1 started out slow, but there were enough intriguing new ideas about the supernatural that I stayed with it, and damn am I glad I did! The book just continued to pick up and by the climax I was completely hooked! A new concept of how magic is used, yet based on the elements, as so much magic theory is. New races and a new realm, all very unique. Great dialogue, and relatable characters, hey who can't relate to a 2 and half meter tall werewolf, right?!?!? (that's 8 1/4 feet to us Americans...). Highly recommend this series!!
Otto is up to his neck in trouble. Shilt is coming into the world draining people's life energy and kidnapping people. Otto is trying to find a missing girl. Zach is being chased by the police. People are being killed and eaten by werewolf. Sexual predators are the main victims. How much of this is Zach fault or is it another type of supernatural being. A cliffhanger ending and I have to read more. Received ARC copy and this is my honest opinion.
Unleashed magic by Steve Higgs is the second book in the Realm of False Gods series. Having agreed to become a familiar to a demon to rescue a teenage girl in the previous book, Wizard Otto Schneider's preparations are disrupted when he is asked to assist the police with a murder likely by a werewolf. There is so much going on with multiple killings as well as a missing teenager and upset demons all while Otto is unwell. An interesting book but not what I enjoy. More for urban fantasy fans.
It seems no matter how much Otto tries to make things right, all goes to Hell. This is one Action packed 2nd Story in this Series. He is traveling all over the place trying to find a missing girl and stopping the Killings. Narrator does a nice job but the heavy German accent is difficult to understand at times for persons with damaged hearing.
Brilliant series, very well written with edgy and either really likable or despicable characters. And it is good enough to read again as i am now. All this authors books are excellent and he has at least 3 other series that are not paranormal and I absolutely love them, which is a surprise to me!
Fabulous world building! Fantastic story from beginning to end! The characters and situations are so well described that the reader is right there in a front row seat to all the madness and mayhem! At times I found myself holding my breath even! A story told so well that, even as fantastical as it is, it could be believable!
Good follow on from the first book and interested to see where the series leads to in book 3. Good fight scenes, easy to read, always wanting to read one more chapter and finding it fairly hard to go down. Not 5 stars and not 4 stars but a great quick read and looking forward to continuing Otto’s journey. 4.25 stars/5 stars
Another excellent book from this author. The characters are developing well. Good fast moving plot, which ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Looking forward to the rest in the series.
Loved this one. I love that Otto is not some superhero with all the answers. He doesn't alway get it right first time, but with thought and his wit he manages to get there in the end.
I'm really liking this series. I like Otto and Zachary; several of the secondary characters are interesting, too. I'm hoping that more information will be revealed about the demons and angels and their world. There's lots of action and information about Germany. Recommended.
Another 3.5er. I am not sure why I am not connecting more strongly wit this series. It is not bad. I think with this one, I figured out the mystery way too quickly. Then it was just a matter of getting to the reveal. Still and all, it was a pretty good read.
Just finished and I want more! Higgs sets you up! You start one book and get hooked. Same great characters with some new people involved. Storyline is enjoyable and easy to follow!
Otto Schneider has just learned how much more types of magic he has. Now to save a girl who is just learning her capabilities. Too bad the other girl who has turned into a monster doesn’t want to change. And Daniel still wants him as familiar. What does he do now?
A wizard a werewolf and some demons..what more can you ask? Excellent book full of action. Keep writing and thanks for letting me glimpse a different part of the world.
