To the Heart of the Matter is Shawn Carney’s third book about the 40 Day’s for Life pro-life campaign which he began in 2007 with his wife, Marilisa, and has now spread to 1000 cities in 63 countries.
This book is considerably shorter than his previous two books, 40 Days for Life: Discover What God Has Done...Imagine What He Can Do, and The Beginning of the End of Abortion: 40 Inspiring Stories of God Changing Hearts and Saving Lives, but packs no less punch for its size. It consists of 40—Carney likes the number, and it is after all scriptural—short meditations for those committed workers out there ‘on the line’. Sadly, I am not one of them out there in front of an abortion clinic or hospital. I am, however, totally committed to praying for respect for Life and an end to abortion. I’m with those on the front lines in spirit.
Here in To the Heart of the Matter, Carney offers readers 40 motivational reflections on why they are doing what they are doing, important for those cold rainy days, or dark nights—because the vigil is 24 hour even though the clinics are closed someone is still there praying—or when a long time passes and it seems like nothing has happened. Each reflection begins with a catchy title phrase, the meat of the meditation, a scripture verse(s) and a daily intention.

Shawn Carney has written a forty day devotional guide to help the reader become a better advocate to create a culture of life in our current society. Such a ulture would treasure life, end abortion and promote strong families. A book well worth reading.

40 Days For Life - Fall 2025...COMPLETE! This devotional was life-changing, re-enforcing, and spiritually amazing. I enjoyed this book as it walked me through my own prayers for life. 100% recommended for either the Spring or Fall 40 Days For Life events.

So often I am driven to despair on the sidewalk...but Shawn fills me with hope, even joy. Sainthood is imminent for Shawn Carney. The beginning of the end of abortion starts with all of us.
