Okay let's be real, when I found out one of my favourite childhood authors wrote a graphic memoir-type book about menopause, was there any chance I wasn't going to read it?
And oh my God, this is SO! GOOD! First of all, this book is a beautiful piece of art. Oomen did all of the illustrations and they range from hilarious and relatable to beautiful and poignant and the whole aesthetic of the book is gorgeous and colourful and vibrant!
Wait, did I, a 25-year-old child, just call a book about menopause relatable? Yeah, yeah I did. Listen, this book isn't just relatable to 50-something afab folks, okay? It's relatable to anyone who has ever struggled with anxiety or depression, insecurity, perfectionism, burnout, medical sexism, even online dating. This book deals with all of those things and more.
Plus, if you consider yourself a feminist at all it's just important to be aware of this huge thing that affects almost all afab people in the world and is hardly ever talked about. The stigma on menopause is enormous and the science is severely lacking, which is unsurprising for something that disproportionately affects women.
So whether you are going through menopause, or know you will at some point, or are just interested in understanding this hugely underrepresented phenomenon, this is a wonderful, wonderful book and I highly recommend it!
