Dance to My Tunes: A collection of short stories

Rate this book
Women have been fooled by fairy tales and Bollywood for a very long time. It is time to rewrite the stories. We are no longer the hero’s love interest. Neither do we believe in happily ever after. We do not wish to dance to anybody else’s tunes. We choose our path. We make mistakes. We learn from them. We love. We lose. We age. We evolve. These are stories of women. Different women. For we cannot and should not stereotype women. These stories are of relationships. These stories touch upon social issues. These stories may inspire you. These stories make you feel like you are not alone. These stories may surprise you. These stories may entertain you. I hope everybody would be able to pick something they like.

Dance to my tunes is a collection of 18 Short stories - solely based on Woman Protagonist. The Author touches various sort of problems/stigma faced by women in this ever-evolving society. What I loved throughout this book - This dissects the exact point of how different lives are get affected by the prevailing factors of inequality, gender-based discrimination and Rape & abuse. This read is not only an eyeopener but highlights the inadequacies of the source to overcome the same. Certain reads would never leave your mind. For me, this is the one.

'Time to rewrite the stories' such an apt and appropriate line in the preface by the author Tanvi Sinha. She made my expectations with this line and her written word lived upto those expectations.

The cover is beautiful and the title makes sense once we read the preface of the book. The cover could have been better.

This is a collection of 18 short stories. Every story has a woman protagonist.

The stories are written in simple language with easy to understand language.

The stories are so appropriate and timely to the times and the world we live in.

The author has written stories depicting women in various phases, stages and status in life. She appropriately breaks stereotypes where necessary and talks about our age old values where those are important. She paints a balanced and practical picture of the lives of women. Through all the stories she has successfully managed to bring out the various shades of grey in which we see people behave in the world.

If you love stories that are contemporary, women centric, unapologetic and relatable to the lives of women then you should definitely read this book.

Dance to My Tunes is a women-centric anthology of 18 short stories that touch upon various issues that undermine the capability of women and foster inferiority complex in their mind. Taut narrative and simple language make this book a breezy read. Therefore, it is a good bet if you have less time to spend with your kindle.

There is a thin line between feminism and female chavinism. The moment we cross it, the whole idea of feminism goes haywire and we fail to convery it the laymen as well. Dance to my Tunes could be classified as a feminist literature. Author has addressed everry issues related to gender discrimination and caled out on the double standards of the society.

These stories are of relationships. These stories touch upon social issues. These stories may inspire you. These stories make you feel like you are not alone. These stories may surprise you. These stories may entertain you.

Stories on the go-The story of a mother who tried to bring up her daughter independently, giving all the freedom that she was deprived of as a child. She is immensely satisfied with how she has brought up her daughter. She was so involved and concentrated in her daughter that she failed to direct her son as to what to do and what not to. How he turned out? It's for the readers to figure out. The book has a string message that we should concentrate equally on both kids. The story of a working woman who finds it tough to manage her worklife and household, gets criticised by her mother-in-law on a daily basis and to make the matters worse, her husband dictates everything to his mother. How will she manage it?

A single mother had been cheated by her boyfriend who claims that he never gave any promises of marriage; How is Karma going to play? A woman who recognises late in her marriage that her sexual preferances are not straight- author has clearly pointed out that injustice if done to men, or women are wrong. A girl who has been beaten by her husband finds no support from her own family because they expect her to be perfect. It is indeed a sad scenario that we see of late because women these days are way too independent for the consevative society to handle. Somehow I couldn't concur with the climax, though it is happening everywhere. Two murder mysteries are added in the string of contemporary fictions. While I could relate to the fact that justice was served, the back story was more or less predictable and the mystery element failed.

Feminist Literature- Except two stories , the rest of the stories are all about feminism/ male female equality. The predominant theme of the wrong husband and nagging mother-in-law gets monotonous down the line. Notwithstanding the sad reality, there is another world of families where mother-in-laws sides with their daughter-in-laws. That could have been explored and exploited so as to give a ray of hope and a pointer that people look upto.

In a nutshell, the book is a short, fast paced and interesting read for the people who uphold the idea of feminism.

What a fantastic story collection .I really enjoyed it a lot . After a very long time i read something which does not potrait woman as a victim and that is the best thing in this story collection.

So I am going to write in brief about this book , here we go.
These stories deal with lot of social issues ,we always notice these things around us but we take it very lightly.
In this patriarchal society men has always treated women badly and they think they can go away with this very easily but now time has changed.

so here is what i think about these stories.
THE ANTITHESIS - It has a very strong message of gender inequality .We always do the things to our child what we have never experienced in our life.Providing women their rights and crying for women empowerment is leading to demolition of men's rights ,behaviour .
Focusing on women only is not going to raise their status we need to look after their behaviour too.

JUST ANOTHER DAY -This story has a funny ending .Jyotsna's breaking point reminds me of Kartik aryan from movie pyar ka punchnama.

THE FLAWED DAUGHTER-IN-LAW -This story has a strong message that fighting is not always solve your problem, sometime silence play the crusial role in your struggle.

I NEVER PROMISED TO MARRY YOU - This story justify the proverb of Tit for Tat.

HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME-People who play nice around does not mean they care for you too.

MUST YOU FINISH YOUR ROTTEN TEA-What's done is done .do not try to mend the thing that is broken from root. Not everything/everyone deserve a second chance.

THE EMPTY NEST- Sometime our younger ones taught us something which we have not not learned in our age.

ONCE UPON A LOVE STORY -Everyone has a secret story in their heart.

NOT BY BLOOD -Some relations are more than blood realations and that relation is humanity.

BECAUSE IT WAS REAL - Sometime people you love does not understand your feelings and they who understand does not always support you and that is the time when you need space and peace.

SCARRED - Your misdeed can ruined others life too.

These are the some of the stories that are really amazing though all the story are amazing too.
It has some serious issue of being a lesbian in a society that does not support you ,old age marriage that is not common in our society ,dark skin girl .body shaming ,juvenile offence and life after 60.

This is so so fantastic to read about this women who take a stand for themselves.
I loved it ,it is funny with serious issues and had a thought provoking contents.

Book Title: Dance to my tunes
Author: Tanvi Jain
Format: Kindle

Book Title:
The title of the book ' Dance to my tunes ' is strong and empathetic.

Book Cover:
The cover image of the book is a woman in a dance pose with the perfect attire. The background abstract art of flowers added more beauty to the cover.

Inside the book:
India is known around the world for its cultural heritage, traditions, civilization, religion and geographical features from ancient times. In this country, women are respected to the core but also are treats as seconds on a whole. In this book, the author tried to explain how women are usually showcased with tinted glass in movies and books but the, in reality, the picture is different.

Coming to new age women and their lifestyles, apart from the financial independence to some extent nothing much is changed in her life. The author, a woman  very intrinsically explains the concept of being a woman. The book is a collection of short stories.  Each story because of its content will definitely leave a profound impact on a reader's mind. And the book definitely pokes people's minds.

What I like:
1. Practical things that happen on a daily basis are mentioned in a very intelligent and honest manner.
2. A thorough R&D approach on an issue that prevails now in our society is very elegantly addressed. 3. The problems about rape, abuse, gender disparity, inequality, and others are explained very well.
3. The discrimination that often a female faces in the present society, with great narrative skills is very well presented.
4. The emotional journey of a woman be it in a breakup or a new love or a sweet moment is beautifully explained.

What I didn't like:
The book is a superb read and thus this section is invalid!

Narration:
A very realistic narration is found in the book.

Simple yet effective language with nice grammar is observed.

Book Review:
Book Name: Dance To My Tunes- A collection of short stories
Author: Tanvi Sinha
Format: Kindle
.
Summary: It is a collection of 19 short stories. Each of them has a strong woman character in the centre. The stories are about 19 beautiful, confident women who are ready to challenge the world with their ideology.
.
My Take: Well, to be honest, I am not a big fan of short stories. So I was skeptical about picking this one up. But I had taken a very good decision by choosing this one. I am so overwhelmed by this book.
.
There are some books, those will make you feel good about yourself. This is definitely one of them. The stories are upto date, on point and very very honest. Each of them brings new flavor. The concepts are very relatable. The author has chosen a relevant topic and woven a story with
her words. Thus this beautiful book is created.
.
The writing is simple and lucid. You won't need a great vocabulary while reading this. This is a feel good book with some great messages. I am so influenced by the concepts and I highly appreciate the author for working on these topics.
.
All the stories are very unique and different from each other. But if I have to choose one I will definitely pick "The Red Cottage".The story is very simple yet beautiful. I was smiling as well as crying while going through the story. I loved the lines at the ending of the story:
.
"The red cottage still stood there. Unoccupied. Untouched. Like a fairy tale".
.
I loved the way author has shown that it takes a moment of courage to come out and voice your opinion. That voice has the power to change the entire nation. Be it Sameera or Divya, Kamini or Sadhna, every girl had their own struggle and everyone is fighting. I want all the book lovers out there to try this book and share your thoughts with me.

'Dance to My Tunes' is a collection of 18 short stores written by Tanvi Sinha. The speciality of the book is these stories are all women-centric.

The book tells stories of different women with a twist. The stories are of their relationships and suggest that we cannot and should not stereotype women. The cover of the book matches with the title. The cover depicts a dancer in a dance pose. The colours of the cover are very refreshing. The blurb gives an idea about what to expect from the book. The title will make a perfect sense when a reader finishes reading the book.

The author has narrated these stories in a very intriguing way. The author has focused on real-life issues. These stories touch upon social issues. Sometimes, these stories may surprise you, shock you or disheartened you.

Must You Finish Your Rotten Tea?  is a story of a gal who returns to her parent's house after a fight with her husband. She was in two minds about filing for a divorce but a simple spoilt tea helps her to reach the conclusion.

I enjoyed the story of a grandma. Grandma Has a Life is a story of not only Sarita but many ladies in Indian society. Their life is always centred around the family but they also do have their own life, their own space and wish to live as per their own wish.

This is just a glimpse of what a reader can expect in the book. It is disheartening that even in 2020 we need to write such stories of women liberation and suppression. All the stories will definitely appeal to the readers.

Thank you for Half Baked Beans for giving me an opportunity to review this book.

Dance To My Tunes:
Dance to my tunes is written by Tanvi Sinha and it comprises of 18 short stories. Stories that are pragmatic in expressing the ordeal women faces in our male dominant society. The stories revolve around how convoluted the lives of women are balancing between responsibility social stigma. While the stories will restore your belief in happy ending and a few will leave you pondering on this social imbalance and the price and amount of sacrifice a lady puts in for mere existence and survival. I have read a few reviews recommending every woman to read it, I would rather suggest every man should read this book for a better understanding of the injustice and they can be a bit diligent in their approach. The best thing about this book is that the stories features women from all works of life and they are the sole driving factors of the story. Few protagonists defying the fallacy of being week and dependent while few breaking the invisible barriers of society. These stories tell about the social exploitation body shaming domestic violence stigma discrimination. Sometimes even women telling other women that it cannot be done. The story also tells us about the invisible chain and prison society builds around women to contain them and to diminish their spirit. The stories successfully portraits the vivid emotions raw and brutal.
Tanvi has written about things that are taboo and generally brushed aside. Her story telling is acrid and makes us introspect whether we are tyrant or just another human being. Tanvi’s past blogging experience can easily recon with this quintennial work with Dance To my tunes.
A good read!

Collection of Practical Feminine stories

Book - Dance To My Tunes
Author - Tanvi Sinha
Format - Kindle Edition
Publication Date - 20 Jan 2020

The cover of the book reminded me of a serial 'Nupur' telecasted on Doordarshan starring legendary actress Hema Malini. Lovely and attractive cover with a dancer and abstract flowers behind as background.

The title 'Dance To My Tunes' is apt as it means the essence of all the stories in the book.

The stories of women. Different women. These stories are of relationships. These stories touch upon social issues. These stories inspire the readers. These stories may make the readers feel like they are not alone. These stories may inspire us. These stories may entertain us.

While reading these stories, I felt to be a part of it, facing or faced the same situations which the protagonist of different stories face.

The few lines in the book will remind you of your mother, grandmother, mother in law or any other person :
" You are a girl, you should know household chores. You have to build a home and nurture it all your life."
"Your true happiness lies in finding a good husband." and many more.

Through this story is the author has been successful in bringing out the feelings and stories of every woman which she can relate to in any phase of her life.

I enjoyed each and every story and felt being a part of it. My personal favourite story was 'The Flawed Daughter-in-law'.

The narration is smooth and holds on the readers interest in every story.

Each story is short, unique and deals with different social issues and taboos related to women.

Easy and understandable language.

I would like to thank the author for writing such a realistic collection of short stories.

Dance to My Tunes is a book written by Tanvi Sinha. It is a collection of Short stories with women as protagonists. The book is true to its blurb and present us with women from different walks of life. These women are realistic, they are courageous, they are brave and they are flawed. Some of them are still bound by tradition whereas some break those chains to form a life of their own.

The story 'The Antithesis' brings out a very important and relevant topic of how we behave with girls vs boys in a household. It talks from the perspective of a mother. While we are encouraging our daughters to work and be independent outside, sometimes the mothers forget that we have the responsibility to teach our boys to learn and do the household work too. Until that happens clashes in the couple will keep on happening. In the story too, Ramya , the mother is puzzled when she finds out that her very lovable son Rehan abuses his wife Mira. He beats Mira and still has the inherent male chauvinistic mentality embedded in his psyche. Ramya is not ready to accept this initially but when she hears the same from Rehan's mouth herself, she is forced to think about what went wrong.

The line which will remain with me forever comes from the story 'The Correction':" The opposite of love is not hatred, it is indifference. We both really don't care about each other!" This is truth in all of its glory.
If you are sick from reading the sugar coated boy-meets-girl-and-falls-in-love romances and are looking for something more realistic to touch your soul, then this is your book.

Go ahead and read it in these lockdown times of coronavirus. Be safe and stay positive.

"Dance to My Tunes" beckons readers with its evocative title and captivating cover art. It features a poised dancer amidst a backdrop of delicate floral motifs. Tanvi Sinha masterfully navigates the intricate landscape of womanhood in India through a collection of poignant short stories.

With finesse, Sinha delves into the rich tapestry of cultural heritage, tradition, and the nuances of societal roles. Despite the veneer of respect, women grapple with systemic challenges, often relegated to secondary status. Sinha adeptly juxtaposes the idealized portrayal of women in media with the harsh realities they face, shedding light on the gaping disparity.

Her narratives deftly navigate the complexities of daily life, tackling sensitive topics such as rape, abuse, and gender inequality with a blend of insight and honesty. Through meticulous research and eloquent storytelling, Sinha compels readers to confront the stark realities of contemporary society.

Dance To My Tunes by Tanvi Sinha is a collection of 18 short stories. The stories revolve around the social issues affecting the women.
Some stories are about Gender based discrimination which is the main highlight of the book. Some stories are about women empowerment and freedom.

The stories speak of how women are always told to adjust in marriage life and never to question it. Even if she is being wronged she is made to adjust. How only girls are taught to do the household chores. How after marriage a working women, inspite of keeping a balance between work and home still have to listen to daily tantrums of in-laws and husband. She is expected to be perfect and never make a mistake. How men can use cuss words but women can't because she is a women🙄 Men can stay out late at night but women can't and it goes on and on.
Moreover it shows that no matter what, society will always find a way to put women down.
But we gotta fight back.

I can relate to many circumstances in the book. Because still women are targeted every now and then be it at work place or home. All the stories were pretty much engaging. The writing is simple and easy to understand. Its a quick read and can completed in a few hours. I enjoyed reading the Author's book and looking forward to read her other works.

Mentioning some of my favs
- Grandma has a life
- I never promised to marry you
- The Empty Nest
- The Antithesis

Can be read by anyone. Or should i say MUST be read by everyone.

A highly recommended book especially for women. A wonderful collection of short stories showing the harsh reality of the life of women in India. The social pressures, ignorance, marital problems, being treated as an inferior, continuously being under the judging eyes of family and society – Women face these challenges and much more. These are stories of finding strength, learning self-acceptance, searching for happiness, overcoming social pressure, learning to say no, supporting each other and so much more. For instance the story ‘Grandma has a life’ is about discovering the person in you and living the life you are meant to have after the age of 61. This is also the story of learning to say no and choosing your peace and happiness within yourself. ‘The empty nest’ is the story of a 59-year-old woman who had rented a room in the house to a young working girl. The clashes between them make the old woman realize the mistakes she made in her life and correct her attitude to find peace, happiness, strengthen family ties and find contentment in her life. There are 18 such stories which show us a completely different aspect of a woman's life.

The book makes you see and realize certain things, which happen right in front of your eyes and yet go unnoticed. Definitely a book worth reading.

Review: ✨“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”✨

🌸The book comprises of 18 short stories.Stories shows how women faces problems in this society. Some of the stories will have happy ending and some won't.These consist of invisible chain and prison that a society has build around women and diminish their spirit and confidence.
The story which touched me was, "if love was not blind",beacause today in modern world also at times looks of a women are not everything. In our society we see people judging girls or women more on their looks rather than their talent and inner beauty, which is not right and people should change their mindset towards this part.🌸
After reading the book i would prefer, a man should read this book so, it will change their prespective towards women and bring change in society.
People who enjoy reading short stories should go on with this book. The author has done a excellent work by showing problem being faced by a women in this society.Language is simple and narration is good.
Cover of the book is decent, color combination is good and title is apt for the story.
The stories which i liked in this book are:

Dance to my tunes by tanvi sinha is a book consisting of 18 amazing short stories. I usually don't prefer short stories but this was an exception and good one at that .
This book deals with how women's are treated in today's world by not only men but also women.
this book consist of different tales of different women who faced misogyny, and patriarchal beliefs. It shows how people seem to be mordernised and they like to show their liberal thinking and broad mind decisions and are still the reason why the state of women in our country has not changed, why these men still think women are supposed to serve them.
These stories potray injustice women have faced and how they have always danced on the tunes of others. The reason this still prevails is because we women have let this happen. The title does so much justice to the book it's time we dance on our own tunes instead of societies expectations.
I love the concept and idea, though some of the stories were lacking depth but had great ideas. I love the line "this house has always had self- sufficient women" in the story "not by blood".Though still my favourite was the "red cottage". This book has very easy language,in terms of writing it could have been better.
I would definitely suggest everyone to read it ones.
These are stories definitely rewritten from our lives.

an amazing read

The book is a collection of 18 short stories, all about women and the oppression they've been facing since time unknown. Each story revolves around one particular problem concerning women, like homosexualities, domestic violence, rape culture, body shaming etc. The author explains the intensity of each of these issues with the right story, thereby making the reader feel the emotions as strongly as the characters themselves, thus urging us to look upon the culminated effect of chauvinism which shadows our society till date. The language used is simple and the choice of words are apt. Both the description and narration are crisp and to the point. Care has been taken to not extend any story beyond what is required. The best part about this collection is that, the author hasn't restricted the scope of the stories only to the issues. A few of these stories also deal with liberation, fighting and winning of women against these oppressions. The cover is well designed and the title would make perfect sense as one completes reading the book. All the stories have the capacity to inculcate a lot of values in a reader. Overall it was a wonderful yet light read. I would give this a 4/5.

An influential read!

Dance to My Tunes is a collection of short stories based on women and all the facts and things associated with it. Dont get wrong with the title and coverpage of the book as something related to the dance. But it treasures something more deep and meaningful. As a women, we too have our own life, to look for, to live for and to cherish for what we are.
.
The stories tries to inculcate the varying matters on women stereotyping such as choice of dress, career or even a partner, the gender roles, domestic behaviour, physical appearance and other nonsensical issues.
I really loved the way of presentation of the author's thoughts through these lively stories. Each story has its unique strong massage to deliver to the audience/readers. Narration was realistic and influential. The pace is smooth and fast. Character differentiation is done well considering the lenght of the stories. I could find the execution pretty well in comparision to the "Stories of Us".

.
A must read book for all age group members. And, to all the men out there, make some time to read these stories for the benefit of yours and the society as well. Because women are already competing for survival of the fittest, and its your turn to mend a little for betterment.

In earlier times, women were subjugated to all possible lengths and patriarchy left no stone unturned to dominate women not just physically but mentally too. The author Tanvi Sinha through her “Dance To My Tunes” attempts to break away from that dominance by saying that women have been fooled by fairy tales and bollywood for a long time.
In the light of this, she writes her short stories from the perspective of women to give voice to the feelings of women. The interesting thing to notice here is that the stories sound to be stories of any woman. Any woman could have gone through the variety of situations that Sinha explores in her 18 short stories. Some captivating titles include, “The Flawed Daughter-In-Law”, “Once Upon a love story”, “Hit Me Baby One More Time” and “Grandma has a Life”
Her basic idea is to encourage women and express what they feel. In the preface she says, “We are no longer the hero’s love interest. Neither do we believe in happily ever after. We do not wish to dance to anybody else’s tunes.” This is enough to express the revolutionary ideas that she has and how strongly they will be an influence on women to break free of the ages old fairy tales and stereotypes.

Cover of this book is gorgeous, a women dancing with a beautiful pose and flowers on the background makes it more attractive. The title is simple and strong.
The writing is simple and lucid. You can easily understand the phrases without having a great vocabulary.
The book has 18 short stories and each story has a woman as protagonist. The author has written stories depicting women in various phases, stages, and status in life.
These are the stories of finding strength, learning self acceptence, searching for happiness, overcoming social pressure, learning to say no, supporting each other and so much more. The stories are short but each story is fresh in concept and add to a new flavour to the book. This book has great messages I highly appreciate the author for putting all the various concepts. The stories successfully portraits the emotions.

Amazing!

This book is a beautiful collection of 18 short stories. They are all spoken in a woman's perspective. Each story has its own unique spin to it. The stories catch your attention right from the start. The stories topics range from equality, rape culture, domestic violence, homosexuality to domestic help, etc.

The cover is gorgeous and the title unique. The language is lucid and easy to follow & understand. Each story is short and precise delivering whatever message that the author wanted to give at that exact moment. It isn't exaggerated anywhere and makes for a short read at any time of the day.

It is perfect for people who love short stories and female based ones. But worthy to be read by almost everyone.
