An Appalachian Feud Blows Up in 1912

Step into True Colors -- a new series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime

In Carroll County, a corn shucking is the social event of the season, until a mischievous kiss leads to one of the biggest tragedies in Virginia history. Ava Burcham isn’t your typical Blue Ridge Mountain girl. She has a bad habit of courtin’ trouble, and her curiosity has opened a rift in the middle of a feud between politicians and would-be outlaws, the Allen family. Ava’s tenacious desire to find a story worth reporting may land her and her best friend, Jeremiah Sutphin, into more trouble than either of them planned.

The end result? The Hillsville Courthouse Massacre of 1912.

This was an engaging historical fiction story set in the early 1900s in Virginia. It started a bit slow for me to get involved in, then once I did, I didn’t want to stop until I got to the end. It has a bit of a Christian slant to it, as others in this series do, but not really that overwhelming. The writing was good enough in the handful of books in this series I read, that I didn’t mind it.  The Red Ribbon centers on a fictional couple who are sparking, or courting, and some things that befall them. Some of the story is based on actual events from that area. I found the writing good and enjoyed the story. Advance electronic review copy was provided by NetGalley, author Pepper Basham, and the publisher.

The tragic history of a little-known small-town is honored and infused with hope in The Red Ribbon. Pepper Basham's inviting storytelling will challenge the way readers view mountain culture, clans, feuds, sparkin’ and kisses.

Corn shuckin', feudin', and courtin'... This sweet friends-to-more romance features a gripping suspense element cleverly tempered by humor and unforgettable characters! It's a recipe sure to capture your attention as you devour it from cover to cover.

Ava's passionate pursuit of truth and justice and Jeremiah's patient pursuit of Ava instantly endeared these characters to my reader-heart. While the dangerous shadows that seem to lurk around their idyllic mountain town frequently increased my rate of page-turning, The Red Ribbon's storyline is never without hope. I especially appreciate the way suspenseful scenes are often chased by humorous situations or sweet romantic moments... a brave reader I am not.

One of the best things about a multi-author series and specifically True Colors is the variety! Pepper Basham has crafted an intriguing, inspiring, and entertaining story centered around a truly tragic historical event. I highly recommend this book (as well as the other True Colors stories I've read so far)!

Basham masterfully weaves a fictional tale within the framework of a true crime mystery to create a gripping tale that is difficult to put down.
At first, I didn't really like Ava's headstrong ways, which seemed reckless to me. Yet Jeremiah's steady presence and the guidance of her Granny Burcham help to keep her centered. The romance in the story is endearing and totally natural and believable. I rooted for the couple throughout and many of their interactions made me smile and laugh out loud, which helped to temper the more intense moments.
As with other books I've read by this author, she skillfully incorporates a faith message that is meaningful, yet not at all preachy. The action is non-stop and although there is a large cast of characters, a handy chart at the beginning and the way the writer makes their personalities unique helps the reader to keep everyone and everything straight.
Make sure to read the author's note at the end to see which parts are fact and which are fiction. Not that it matters as you read, but afterward it is fascinating to know.

'I've outrun a lot of things in my time, but I've never been able to outrun a guilty conscience, an achin' heart and the judgment of God.' (Grandaddy Sutphin)

I am totally enjoying this series of books by Barbour Publishing, True Colors. All feature actual crimes but fictionalize them in some way. I look forward to each one. Pepper Basham does this one proud. I was so captivated, I did my own research into the Courthouse Massacre. And her addition to the story is so wonderful! I loved Jeremiah and Ava's story. I recommend not only this author, but this series.

This entire series has been fascinating and The Red Ribbon is no exception. The setting is the author's hometown of Carroll County, Virginia. That helps explain why she was able to so clearly bring the area to life. The novel is based upon "The Courthouse Massacre" of 1912.

Mountain venacular is part of what brings the setting to life with phrases such as "sparkin'" and "like a squirrel to tree hoppin'". The descriptions of meals, homes and occupations were equally well done to paint a clear picture of the time and area.

The slow building romance in the novel was sweet to be a part of. The disagreements between families was tangled in facts back in 1912 and that came through in the pages. The author's afterward was a wonderful complement to learn more about the events and citizens that were a part of this tragic event.

My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

What a well-crafted, intriguing tale! The author really captured a feeling of mystery and unease in this story. It was clear that there were many goings on up in these mountains that were not on the up and up, leading to many senseless tragedies that occurred both before the book began and throughout the timeline of the story.

I appreciated that in this true crime drama, the main characters were written to allow the reader to be right in the middle of the action, creating a way to follow the true tragic events , yet also be able to remain hopeful about a happy ending for them. I loved Jeremiah and Ava! They were wonderful characters and the author included so many beautiful scenes between the two that highlighted their love for each other.

This was a fascinating story and I always appreciate reading the author’s notes at the end of these true crime novels to find out what is fact and what is fiction.

Wow, wow, WOW! What an amazing book! Pepper Basham is one of my all time favorite authors and The Red Ribbon is a storytelling masterpiece!
I loved learning about a true crime that I had never heard of before, and Pepper wrote this story in a beautiful way that honors the people on both sides of this tragedy, and fills the reader with empathy for all involved and their families.
Yes, this is a true crime story, but this book also contains a beautiful reminder that there is hope in this world all because of the One in whom our hope is found! I also loved the message regarding identity, and that who we truly are is all in Whose we are, I don't know about you but I personally need to be reminded often who I am in Christ! This book blessed my heart in so many ways and I know it will do the same for you!
And of course it wouldn't be a Pepper Basham book without a breathtaking romance (not to mention numerous toe-curling kisses!) and man is it a good one! I absolutely adored Ava and Jeremiah's romance, it gave me all the feels and had me swooning from beginning to end!
I also have to say that I love Granny Burcham so much, she's the absolute best and she made me smile every time she appeared on the page!
The suspense in this book is fantastic and so well written, it kept me on the edge of my seat and I hated to stop reading, and the fact that Pepper created a fictional mystery alongside the true crime was absolutely genius and so brilliantly done! If you are a fan of Roseanna M. White you'll love Pepper Basham's brand of suspense!
I absolutely and completely loved every single moment of The Red Ribbon, and it's one of my top ten favorite reads of 2020!
I most highly recommend The Red Ribbon! Trust me this is one book you don't want to miss!

Wow, blown away by another book in the True Colors series!
Author Pepper Basham writes her books about the Appalachian area and my oh my are they authentic, from the area portrayed to the dialect to the crushing poverty.
Very well researched, this author with her Appalachian heritage brings an authenticity to her writing.
I am loving this series, all based on true criminal events that have been fictionalized in some way.
Jeremiah and Ava's story kept me captivated as I read.
I had to look up the Hillsville Courthouse Massacre of 1912 myself because the book fascinated me so much. I love when I can learn more from a book I am reading and frequently look things up as I read.
Romance comes alive in this book as does the humor.
I highly recommend this book and the whole True Colors series.

Hillsville and Fancy Gap, Virginia
1911-1912

A couple weeks ago leaf-peeping was at its best. So my husband and I drove through back roads in Virginia. We viewed a plantation, had ice cream at Mabry Mill, walked up Groundhog Mountain fire look-out, Blue Ridge Music Center, then more stunning backroads toward Galax (where there’s a terrific bike trail along New River). Beautiful country!

I wish I had read this book before we took that little trip. I didn’t realize we went right through areas in his book, nor did I know we could've actually viewed Sidna Allen's house near Fancy Gap.

Anyway, I love all things Appalachia and I’m fascinated with Pepper Basham's writing which is often based "over yonder" near our neck of the woods in Tennessee.

This book is based on a real story of a courthouse shooting in Carroll County, of moonshiners, of a traditional shucking red-ear-of-corn-kiss that went bad, of revenge and hush shootings, and two young people caught in he middle of it all.

There are a lot of characters (historic and others) so there's a list of names in the front and who they were in the book. Helpful! I referred to it several times.

Ava was a young woman plagued by the possibility of inheriting her mother's mental illness. Talking to her grandmother gave her hope:

“Oh girl, you don’t have to hope. The Bible says it’s for certain, no matter how much bad blood we got in our past.”
Ava pinched her trembling lips closed as Granny continued.
“And if I figure it proper, the blood of Jesus is only good blood. The best there is. And He washes the bad blood away forever.”
“From my mama’s influence too?”
Granny’s smile crinkled at the corners of her eyes. “If He took on death, hell, and the grave, girl, don’t you think He’s strong enough for all those worries spinnin’ in your head?”

I have to say, I could not put this book down. Fascinating all the way through.

Along with the loveliest friends to sweethearts story I've read in some time, Pepper Basham brings to life the people, the place, and the events surrounding a 1912 shootout known as, among other names, the Courthouse Tragedy.

Everyone knows that Jeremiah Sutphin has been sparking Ava Burcham for years, but it takes a fateful corn shucking for Ava to see. And while a red ear of corn leads to their first delightful kiss, another sparks mischief and ignites a simmering clan rivalry with far reaching consequences in The Red Ribbon.

Blockade whiskey, long simmering tensions, and family legacies permeate this story set in an Appalachian mountain community. Author Pepper Basham has created a seamless melding of fiction and history, creating characters and a storyline that are at once endearing and compelling. Highly recommended for fans of fiction involving true crime from American history and Romantic Suspense.

I've really enjoyed this True Colors series which are accounts of true crimes around the country, usually told from the perspective of fictional people - and most of which I'd not heard of prior to the reading of the book. This one was no different. This book covers the Courthouse Massacre that took place in Carroll County, Virginia in 1912. The event is set up through the tale of fictional characters Ava Burcham and Jeremiah Sutphin, whose friends-to-more story is sweet and romantic. Ms. Basham really sets the stage with the historical details and the beautiful backdrop of the Appalachian mountains. I enjoyed the setting and timeframe and getting to know the characters - both the real ones and the fictional ones. This book had something for everyone. A sweet romance, likable characters, small town drama, mysterious happenings and a serious shootout! Tensions run high amidst the mountain-folk and family feuds begin over a misplaced kiss at a "corn shuckin'". Things aren't always as they seem though, and there is a more sinister thread underlying all of the happenings of Fancy Gap and Hillsville. When things go sideways, Ava and Jeremiah find themselves in the midst of all of the action. I enjoyed reading their tale as much as the historical details of the events. I appreciated that the author put in the note at the end which characters were fictional and which ones were real and what the fates were of the real-life characters. It made it that much more interesting. I would strongly recommend this one to fans of historical romance, true crime stories and even historical mysteries. Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to write a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

I was so excited when I found out Pepper Basham was writing an installment of the "True Colors" series! I so enjoy both the series and her writing, so I had high expectations of "The Red Ribbon" -- and it absolutely met them.

This is one of the few series installments I found I could read at night, lol; it wasn't "scary" or eerie like some of the others ("The Grey Chamber" comes to mind; a great book, but man, defo one for broad daylight!). Fans of Catherine Marshall's "Christy" book will certainly enjoy this read, also set in the Appalachians. I felt like I was right back with some of her characters!

Basham is from the very county she's writing about, which really lent an added depth to it. That can make things harder *or* easier to write about, and she did a great job at dealing with a tough topic and series of events -- especially where, as she notes in the afterword, descendants of those involved are still alive today!

Excellent read, and recommended.

‘Fear don’t speak truth, never has. You’d be wise not to heed it.’

This is the first story I’ve read from the True Crime series and I was completely blown away. This book was filled with all the things I love. The heroine, Ava, is feisty and driven but soft-hearted. That’s such a hard balance to accomplish, but this author made us hope for Ava’s dreams to come true and for her to see the love right before her. The hero, Jeremiah, is all the sighs. His protectiveness for Ava—while still giving her the space she needs—is so endearing. The crime itself was wonderfully portrayed. I was so fascinated by the real portions of the story I totally googled the Allen crew and read several accounts of what happened. What I loved so much about this story is all the meaningful truths tucked into the pages. This author is a genius at inserting these bits of wisdom. I seriously just pause and think on her words for a few minutes before continuing the story. Reading a Pepper Basham is a beautiful experience.

The story of Fancy Gap, Carroll County, Virginia was riveting. The characters, whether historical or fictional, were real. They lived life; they struggled with love, hate, truth, dishonesty, corruption, the past, the future, fear and joy. Wow, what page turner! This is one those books that made me really annoyed with interruptions! I could not read it fast enough. I felt the author wrote from personal knowledge and intimacy with this story. It flowed well and quickly.

Two of my favorite quotes are:

“Ain’t nothin’ quite like a happy ending to make you feel like spring and Christmas is happenin’ at the same time. “ Granny Burcham.

“When she typed the last sentence, tears dampened her face. A weight somehow transferred from her heart to those words, and she realized this was her gift. Her calling. Finding truth and hope in the middle of real life stories.”

I think most of the books in this true crime fiction series are good. This one was really good! I loved the story of the main character and her best friend who she has always been in love with but comes to realize it through different crises that happen. I liked the action of the story and that it kept up the whole time and I really wasn’t sure what would happen till the very end. Thank you to Netgalley for letting me read this advanced copy.

"I reckon we all got bad blood, if you think about it girl . . . but . . . . We got something else that's a marvel."

Fear. It has hovered in the back of Ava Burcham's mind her entire life . . . . the what ifs . . what if she turned out to be as crazy as her mama, would she really hurt the ones that she loves the most? Unfortunately, there's more than family history to worry Ava; a heavy darkness is hovering over her beloved Blue Ridge mountains, a wickedness that slinks about in the shadows of the night, fed by greed and desperation, tainting the souls of good hard-working men. Will Ava's dogged determination to get the facts straight land her in a whole heap of trouble?

And then there's Jeremiah. Sweet, selfless Jeremiah Sutphin; who, all of a sudden, is making Ava's heart flutter in the craziest kind of way. Goodness! Why didn't someone warn her about the power of just one kiss?!

"One kiss and you're all sure-fired and sparkin'? . . . . . The kiss just made known what I have known for a long time, Ava Burcham."

Yes, this book is a tragic tale of family disputes turning all ugly and violent; resulting in what history remembers as "The Courthouse Massacre". It's also a peek into the best and worst of life in the Appalachian mountains, back when blood was thicker than water and no one but everyone, typically held a grudge. Granddaddy Sutphin knew what he was talking about when he quipped, "A quick temper and trigger finger makes for some bad company."

Yet the grandest takeaway just might be the love story; not only between a man and the young woman he has loved since childhood, but this narrative beautifully exemplifies and rightfully magnifies the deepest kind of love; that between the Creator and His created. Granny Burcham got it right, "God ain't sittin up in heaven watchin' a show down here on earth. He don't mind getting His hands dirty. Else, He'd never sent the Savior".

The author hit the ball out of the park with The Red Ribbon. I absolutely adored this story. It had suspense, romance, humor and nuggets of wisdom galore. The Red Ribbon is one of Barbour's True Colors: Historical Stories of American Crime novels. Each can be read as a standalone. I have really enjoyed this series. This one definitely had a different tone than the other books. The story centered around a real crime, The Courthouse Massacre of 1912, in Hillsville, Virginia. However, the tone was not quite as dark as some of the other books in the series.

I attribute this to Pepper Basham's unique voice which is full of Appalachian sass and humor. The story focuses on bootleggers, the generations long feuds of Appalachia and the sweet people that call Appalachia their home. Ms. Basham definitely knows how to pen a sweet romance and a first kiss. But it is her older characters, filled with grit and mountain wisdom, that draw me into her stories. Everyone needs a Granny Burcham in their life. The author's unique sayings had me literally laughing out loud.

A mesmerizing story based on a real event in Appalachian history: The Courthouse Tragedy of 1912, Hillsville, Virginia.

This well written tale flowed with mountain charm, with bits of faith and wisdom added to bring hope amidst the tragic events. The characters felt so real I felt like praying for them at times! I loved Ava and Jeremiah's story. They had both dealt with great loss at young ages, yet overcame it with faith and the help of others. I loved Granny Burcham's bits of wisdom, and the tender memories of Ava's father reminding her that God was with her, singing over her. What a lovely reminder that is for all of us, that God does not abandon his own.

The ending was a perfect wrap up, worth all of the angst. The historical notes at the end were interesting too, especially given the author's personal connections to the area.
This should appeal to historical fiction fans who like stories based on real events with a bit of grit, faith and tender romance. Highly recommend!

With Red Ribbons, Pepper Basham offers readers a gift of strong characters, vivid setting, and a plot that will engage. Step back to the turn of the century in Appalachia, when feuds were real and long-standing. Work with the heroine to breach the divide between the factions while trying to stay alive and wrestle with her past. Reach for the future with her…and learn with her that kissing can be might fun. This book is filled with heart, hope, and history. Highly recommended to readers who love their historical romance with a layer of suspense.

A most worthy story, The Red Ribbon, by Pepper Basham, is volume 8 in the True Colors series of stand-alone historical fiction novels based on true crime events. Beautifully written, thoughtful, and engaging, this captivating book is like a scarlet rose in a field of daisies, stunning and not to be missed. With genuine care and plenty of heart, Ms. Basham brings to life a colorful story that is truly remarkable.

The Red Ribbon is a moving novel that offers a vivid and compelling story of loss, desperation, loyalty, love, justice, and family. It artfully balances hope and despair, perseverance and struggle, and faithfulness and uncertainty. The development of these themes is significantly strengthened and uplifted by meaningful moments of grace, hope, and faith.

Within the pages of this novel, Ms. Basham reveals main characters who are relatable, tenacious, authentic, and brave. Their motivations, their needs, and their goals are wholly believable and inspiring. The opportunities, the choices, and the difficulties the characters face are carefully developed, and from them flows a story that is utterly gripping.

The Appalachian setting, complete with small towns, rustic cabins, mountain trails, and wooded hillsides, enriches the novel as it grows naturally from its deeply historic roots. Abounding with Southern spirit, this mountainous setting hums with vibrant significance in a story that lingers long after the last page has been turned.

As an avid reader, I find it deeply satisfying to be taught, to be challenged, to be comforted, to be entertained, and to be inspired by what I read. The Red Ribbon easily meets these expectations, imprinting upon me a sincere appreciation for how remarkably talented Ms. Basham is as a writer and storyteller. The Red Ribbon is a very special novel, and I eagerly recommend it to all readers.

If you’re going to change the world around you, make sure you’re not the one changing to fit - Jeremiah

Don’t expect to put this one aside until you find out who or what is behind all the danger and killing that leads up to the Courthouse Massacre of 1912. The Appalachian hills hold a certain amount of mystery to all those who have not lived or visited there. It seems hard to believe that there would be such enmity between two families or clans that the feud would last for generations. Such was the situation in Caroll County, Virginia. The Thomas and Allen clans had been at odds for years and it finally came to a head in that courthouse. Could a simple kiss set the scene for murder??

Ava Burcham had seen her share of sorrow, losing her father and brother in violent deaths. Her job at the Temples Alteration Shop Allowed her to make a living with something she enjoyed - especially the beautiful ribbons. Never would she have guessed how important those red ribbons would become.

I thoroughly enjoyed the slow romance that the author entwined into this story of illegal stills, danger and death. It showed the resiliency of the human spirit, especially when one puts their trust in God, knowing He will be there all the time - regardless of what you are going through.

I have really enjoyed this True Colors series and the History woven in with fictional characters. Ms. Basham does a great job of bringing life to the darker side of history and giving us hope in that darkness at the same time. I really loved Granny Burcham and Granddaddy Sutphin sayings at the heading of each chapter. One of my favorites, “ It’s the woman that drives you crazy the most you can’t live without. Or at least, that’s what I’ve figured.” Granddaddy Sutphin. Ava and Jeremiah are wonderful characters. You will be turning pages quickly to find out there outcome. I would say this is a complete package wrapped up in a Red Ribbon, offering you light in the darkness and hope in the bleakest of times.

This was one of my favourites in this series. The feud between all the families were interesting, especially the way everyone perceived the Allens. The way the character Sid was portrayed, the way he helped others in need, did not make him a villain in my eyes as others viewed him.

The fictional plot in between the actual historical events were interesting, action packed and at the end very suspenseful. I knew early on who was involved but didn't realised till the end just how involved.

I just loved Jeremiah and Ava. They were such cute couple and meant for each other. I just loved the romance - it was sweet and innocent and Ava's view on kissing made me smile a few times.

Lovers of historical romance will devour this novel. Pepper Basham has a gift with transporting her readers to the past, and The Red Ribbon is another knock-out. The setting, characters, and faith elements were incredibly moving. Add in the fact that this was based on true crimes, and the intrigue level is undeniable. Jeremiah and Ava are characters you’ll be rooting for the entire time.

4.5 STARS!!!

Liquor soothed a lot of restless Appalachian men in winter. Some bore it better than others. Some loved their drink so much, they killed for it.

That’s a pretty chilling thought. Tensions run deep ‘in them thar hills’. Basham has written a compelling narrative based on a true story. The Red Ribbon is a mystery with a dash of suspense, making it a quick and intriguing read. The author captures a disturbing essence of Appalachia back in the bootlegging days with such reality that the reader can’t help but be drawn into the family feuds and rivalries. The old saying, “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive” came to mind as I was immersed in the complexity of multiple murders, both past and present.

Ava is traditional in many ways and yet quite avant-garde in others. She has a tenacity about her that gets her in some troublesome spots but Jeremiah is often present to rescue her. Their relationship is one built on friendship that turned to love and it is a sweet thing to behold. While Basham is known for her kissing scenes, the beautiful thing about each one in this book is that you know right off Ava and Jeremiah have a deep history and it is going somewhere…marriage. Not once is there anything lustful or inappropriate described and I appreciated that.

One of my favorite characters is Granny Burcham. She reminds me of a woman I knew named Liza when I was growing up deep in Appalachia in my formative years. Wise words do not necessarily come from education but from experience and Granny has a lot of it.

I highly recommend The Red Ribbon to those who like to learn facts encased in great fiction. The author also includes fascinating notes in the back of the book about the real people involved in The Hillsville Courthouse Massacre of 1912.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher and author. My opinion is my own. No compensation received.

What a beautiful story! I was intrigued by the historical aspects, but also mesmerized by Ava's journey to Truth and her Identity in Christ. That touched a place in my heart as I've struggled profoundly with how God sees me. It has taken years to even accept He loves me, and to receive glimpses of the depth and beauty with which His eyes behold me.... Ava's journey touched my heart.

No one does Appalachian fiction better than Pepper Basham.

You are truly transported into another time and place when you step into the world created in The Red Ribbon. Told around a fascinating piece of American history in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you will be swept away in the riptide of jealousy, misunderstanding and confusion surrounding the "Courthouse Massacre"and one mischievous kiss at a corn shuckin'.

Jeremiah and Ava are charming characters, created for the purpose of this story and surrounded by a host of historical figures who bring this piece of history to life. From the romance, to the twist of suspense, to the setting, to the dialogue, to the historical information one gleans while reading-- all woven together to create a riveting story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and all it offered!
