This latest, and final, installment in the Hard Cider Abbey series is the only mystery to take place outside the monastery’s walls. Young Brother Odo ventures forth to gain experience and knowledge of the world, as well as a chance at a completely different sort of future. But the very day he moves into his biological father’s luxury townhouse on the Chesapeake near Baltimore, someone shoots an assault rifle into the house’s façade in the middle of the night, leaving it riddled with bullets. Who did it, and were they targeting Odo—or his father? Odo puts asides his worldly quest to unravel the truth, and along the way finds himself tempted by a charming librarian—and police detective’s daughter—Audra. He also learns firsthand some uncomfortable truths about race and intolerance, as a young man of color suspected of being a gang member. Gradually he discovers the motive behind the shooting, as well as some unwelcome knowledge about his father, all of which play into the crucial decision he must make at book’s end: Should he return to the monastic life, or continue on in the world?
