“May you succeed in all that your heart sets out to do for the good of others. May you resist evil, and may love conquer all.” “Our actions dictate our future.” Wow! What an energetic and tension filled read! The manner in which it's developed and presented to the reader is nothing short of an elaborately twisted, pulse-pounding dive into an imaginatively drawn future landscape of deception and revenge. Failure after failure, but the Gladia are strong willed, till the end. The plot behind The Ruins of The Galaxy is exciting and well-thought out.... Numerous twists and red herrings will keep readers hooked; nothing is as it seems in this book. Hopper and Chaney offer a highly unique premise, while ultimately combining familiar common science fiction concepts, with amazing high tech, and other worldly powers from the Luma. This has been a high-octane instalment, with aggressive action filled scenes, and thought provoking and emotive scenarios. It reads like a graphic novel sometimes, so vivid is the writing! A final crescendo that goes out with a boom! Can’t wait for Terminal Fallout #7 to release! Did I mention before I highly recommend this series? Well, I do, very much so!
Best of the books in the series so far. The stakes are high, the characters are relatable, and the timing is excellent. CH manages to keep the heroes on the move without ever getting bogged down in details. I felt that this book was better edited than some of the earlier books - there were less errors that jarred me out of the story. (but don't let that stop you reading the earlier books!). This book has the grandest scale of any of the Ruins series so far, but the characters are definitely not superseded. Highly recommended!
Book 6 in the series sees the Gladio Umbra race to the seat of galactic rule – Capriana Prime – having learnt from Piper that Moldark has decided that he is going to level the planet with the full force of Paragon Fleet. The only hope for the planet is if Magnus and his team can get to Capriana and raise the planetary defence shield in time. However, the Gladio are also faced with another problem, having learned that Awen’s parents have been kidnapped and taken hostage by the former Ambassador Bosworth, who is now working for Moldark. The Gladio Umbra set out with two objectives, save Awen’s parents, and at all costs, even their own lives, raise the planetary shield. Along with those story lines, we also follow Moldark as he moves his forces into play, and we get to see his continuing fall into darkness as he seeks to destroy every living thing in this Universe. One of the surprising parts of this story though, is the return of Commodore David Seaman and his Sekmit Captain DiAntora. The two of them are appalled at the orders issued by Moldark, finding that their morale compass does not allow them to decimate the population of a defenceless planet for no good reason. As such, Seaman mutinies not only turning his super dreadnaught, but nearly the entire 1st Fleet against Moldark and his 3rd Fleet. This book unfolds into several streams, there is initially, before the fleets arrive, the desperate battle as Magnus and Awen fight to raise the Defence Shield. They have a simple plan, but of course, plan A doesn’t work. I won’t spoil it by telling you how far into the alphabet they get with plans. Needless to say, the battle on the surface for the defence shield is one that is utterly fascinating as the team are constantly fighting to DEFEND the planet, but meeting constant roadblocks as no one wants to believe them, or worse. This is just a constant, running battle, it is brutal, gritty, vicious, and when Azelon delivers the new BATRIG, it becomes epic, as members of the team unleash a new form of fury with Novia style Mechs that are like nothing anyone has ever faced before. There are powerful moments during this story, like when Magnus runs up against his former Recon unit. It is one of the outstanding battles of the series and one that you won’t soon forget. Along with this is the secondary objective of rescuing Awen’s parents, which of course does not go as planned either, and unfolds with not quite as much excitement, but certainly gives the main battle a run for it. This is a really interesting side story as we learn the fate of Awen’s parents, but it also has several major characters in the team. It is another epic running battle you won’t forget. Not long after the battles on the ground start, the fleets arrive above the planet, and soon, the battle for Capriana unfolds (think of the battle above Coruscant in Episode 3 of Star Wars for the chaos that ensues, but add ships firing on the planet as well). This is a desperate and compelling battle as Seaman uses all of his own influence and charisma, every contact he has to get as much of the fleet to join with him in taking down Moldark. He has some unexpected help along the way. The character work continues to be brilliant, from Magnus, Awen to Rohoar, Piper and Willowood. Perhaps my favourite character recently though has been Caldwell, who continues to produce some of the best one-liners I have read in a book for a LONG time – and has left me laughing hysterically (Not a good look when listening to the audio version in the middle of supermarket…). The portrayal of these characters, the in-depth insight into these people who are fighting for something, knowing they might die, and the relationships they forge along the way is masterful. As with the other books, the descriptive work is exceptional, but the Authors have taken it to a new level in this episode of the series, with detailed, gritty, at times graphic and realistic, portrayals of the multiple conflicts on land, in the air, and in space, as the Gladio Umbra and renegade Navy take on Moldark’s forces to try and save Capriana Prime. This continues to be one of the best Mil Sci-Fi series that is available today, and Book 6 is an epic, gritty, action-packed fight across multiple sites of Capriana Prime to save billions of lives. Absolute Must Read!!
Seems like everyone is back together now. Piper is unconscious and being treated by her Grandmother aboard the Spire. The Gladio Umbra are now trying to figure out where Moldark will take his fleet now. From all indications he’s going to head to Capriana, capital of the Republic!
While Moldark’s fleet is badly damaged, he doesn’t seem to care. Also, with Pipers help in the last book, most of the remaining First and Second Republic Fleets have now joined with Moldark’s Third Fleet. It is a fact that he plans on heading to Capriana. He’s after the Group of Nine whom he feels betrayed him. Those nine individuals will die along with the entire planet! Yes, Moldark plans to bombard Capriana from orbit. He intends to kill every one on the planet.
Of course Lt. Adonis Magnus can’t let that happen. With Awen by his side along with the other Gladio Unbra, they sped to Capriana head of Moldark and his Paragon troops. They do arrive about 24 hours prior to Moldark’s fleet arrival and they have that much time to warn Central Command to put up the Planetary Defense Shield (PDS). Only Magnus isn’t sure he’s going to be accepted very well on a planet that has branded him as a traitor! Still, he must do this no matter the cost since there are millions of lives at stake.
This book tells the story of how Magnus was received by Capriana and how deeply the conspiracy has integrated into the Republic Higher Headquarters. Even the Chairman is in league with Moldark, although he doesn’t know that Moldark doesn’t honor any agreements nor does he need any other humans. He’s out to kill every human in the universe so he can reign supreme!
There’s a lot of fighting and a few of the Gladio Umbra do get killed. That’s not surprising, but their numbers are dwindling fast. It’s possible, very possible that they won’t have enough manpower or time to get someone to raise the PDS. It’s also unfortunate that the ability to raise the PDS lies with one a very few individuals some of which are aligned with Moldark!
The story isn’t over so there are more battles to be fought. I hope they’re all as exciting as this one.
Really enjoy this book series. I've been on a bit of a sci-fi kick recently, and this series has certainly hit the spot. The action is solid, but the character development is on-point. The dialogue feels very real. That is to say the characters are very relatable, and their interactions and reactions feel real. Not really communicating this well. I cannot imagine finding myself in any of the situations the characters are in, obviously. However, if I were to transfer the characters into more contemporary and relatable circumstances, I could see similar responses that are relatable. The only issue I have with the series is the amount of language in it. I realize there is a significant militaristic theme involved, which brings with it a certain coarseness. Having served in the military, that is unsurprising. However, there are times when the language in this series is a bit superfluous. This one seemed a little heavier than the others.
I have read these authors other books and thoroughly enjoyed them, but this series I am really struggling with There is lots of action, lots of story, but it comes across disjointed. I wish I could explain it better and others review the series highly, so maybe it is just me
Great action packed space opera that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Can Moldark do the unthinkable and attack Capriana Prime, the centre of the Federation? Will Magnus and his Gladia Umbras get the PSD up in time?
Still going strong that makes the new reincarnation of Star Wars look pretty lame! Charachters are convincing and likeable, the story flows and plenty of action with some nice touches of humour from the droids!
What an epic storyline and character list. The thought and imagination to create this storyline is unbelievable. Through the author’s eyes, it feels like you’re there. You feel the highs and lows and loss off friends and strengthening of bonds.
This lives up to its title. This story takes place over about 36-48 hours. Lots of battles, high stakes and imminent failure. Good story if you like fighting. Enjoyed how They can get themselves in and out of traps. Like the characters and the “fun” they have together.
As expected, loads of fighting and death. Magnus and his team doing loads of splick but not getting everything their own way. It's a wonder there are any of the Gladia left! Looking forward to the next episode in the series
Well you never fail to amaze me with all the action which just gets better and better and the banter is just great lol.. Looking forward to the next book
