Another One Bites the Crust (Oxford Tearoom Mysteries, #7) by H.Y. Hanna
Synopsis /
Champagne and ball gowns, fairy lights and music… Oxford summer balls are one of the highlights of the calendar and tearoom sleuth Gemma Rose is looking forward to taking a break and slipping into something gorgeous for the evening. But when the night ends with a celebrity chef murdered by his own whisk, Gemma finds herself plunged into a new mystery—and the nosy Old Biddies keen to help with the investigation!
But trouble is also brewing at her quaint Cotswolds tearoom: between fighting claims that she's serving “fake” custard tarts and stopping her little tabby, Muesli, from being catnapped, Gemma has her hands full—and that’s before she has to fend off an amorous Italian. To top it all, her boyfriend Devlin’s mother is coming to visit and Gemma is anxious to make a good impression… although Mrs O’Connor isn’t quite what she expected!
With so much going on, it’s a recipe for disaster—but with a bit of help from her mother, Gemma might just solve the case… and live to bake another day.
My Thoughts /
I feel good. Another cosy mystery all ticked off. Another One Bites the Crust is officially done and crusted. Oops, I mean, dusted. This series, written by Australian author, H.Y. Hanna, is chock-a-block filled with loveable quirky characters, each with their own unique personality. The mysteries are set in the historic city of Oxford and the English Cotswolds - which are brought to life with loving detail. The storyline is set out with clever plot twists and clues to help guide us towards the killer along the way. This delightful cosy series is interspersed with humour and a generous dollop of helpfulness, goodwill, and country grace. The book covers are too cute for words, with each book including a picture of Muesli the cat, who plays a part in every story. The only thing that would make this series better, would be to add a dog to the mix. Because. Well. IMHO. Dogs just make everything better, lol.
Two celebrity chefs. One 'ex'. One, ahem, 'sleezy' manager and a television film crew. One murder.
As she was getting ready for the Oxford charity ball, Gemma Rose was lamenting all those rich, buttery Chelsea buns' eaten the night before. Sucking in a breath, struggling to zip up her dress, she realised it was becoming an occupational hazard taste testing all those cake treats offered on the menu at the tearoom. Investigating a murder was the last thing on her mind. Right now, it was just trying to get into this dress!
Also attending the ball, is special guest, celebrity TV chef Josh McDermott. McDermott, who has a huge female following, will be doing a cooking presentation as part of the festivities. Nicknamed 'Posh McDishy', by his followers, it's McDermott's good looks, sex appeal and, more recently, his English custard tarts that have made him a household name. But when Gemma discovers the good chef slumped on the ground, behind his cooking set, just before his presentation - dead, we learn that the good chef might not have been such a good egg after all.
This instalment has most 'regulars' returning, as well, we meet a couple of new ones.
Mabel Cooke, Glenda Bailey, Florence Doyle, and Ethel Webb—four nosy octogenarians who ruled the roost in the little Cotswolds village of Meadowford-on-Smythe, where my tearoom was situated.
One of the side threads involves Gemma Rose (finally) meeting boyfriend, Detective Inspector Devlin O'Connor's mother, Keeley. Her own mother, meanwhile, is trying to set her up with the latest home 'must have'. And one of the Stables' Tearoom customers (Mrs Purdy) tries to catnap Muesli!
As with all good cosies, there are no graphic descriptions of bloodshed or violence here. All you will find in these pages are endearing characters, an entertaining mystery, and an abundance of calories! At the end of the book, Hanna has included a recipe for Custard Tarts, a quintessentially classic British dessert. Reading this series will make you want to come back for a second helping.
