Detective Carter Fiske has a homeless man’s death to investigate. Opioids are in the man’s system, but it is the bag of prescription drugs in his pocket that has Carter’s interest. Hope City...a series created by two USA Today Bestselling Authors Maryann Jordan and Kris Michaels
Scenes and language similar to a R-Rated movie. 18+ readers only.
As an Award Winning and International Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo Best Selling Author, I have always been an avid reader. I joke that I "cut my romance teeth" on the old historical romance books. I’ve written as a hobby for over 30 years. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma's Home was created.
My first novel, Emma's Home became an Amazon Best Seller in 3 categories within the first month of publishing. Its success was followed by the rest of the Fairfield Series and then led into the Love's Series. From there I have continued with the romantic suspense Alvarez Security Series and now the Saints Protection & Investigation Series.
My books are filled with sweet romance and hot sex; mystery, suspense, real life characters and situations. My heroes are alphas, take charge men who love the strong, independent women they fall in love with. I worked as a counselor in a high school and have been involved in education for the past 30 years. I recently retired and now can spend more time devoted to my writing.
I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 35 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters. When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!
A very good story. An excellent continuation of the Hope city books. For a continuity lover like me love the small touches of the stories overlapping, and returning characters picking up supporting roles in the next books.
Carter is married to his job, and finds a release when he can. His job makes it difficult to find a relationship not that he is looking for one. Then he meets Tara Wilson, but will the job and/or Tara's family make things difficult.
I really like the police procedure and investigation of the story. I like the process of elimination to finding the correct suspects. As well as the moral dilemma of someone doing the right thing but not necessarily legal. This is why I would never make it as a cop no matter the country.
A great continuation and setup for the next books. The end of the story sets up I think book 4 written by Maryann, the is also an extract from book 3 Brody written by Kris Michaels.
Carter is the third book in The Hope City series. Love this book so much. Carter Fiske is a detective and is investigating deaths of 3 homeless men. Tara Wilson is works at a homeless shelter where Carter has to investigate. Carter and Tara were perfect for each other. They were great together and had great chemistry. But damn these McBrides and Kings are protective, but loved that Carter could stand his ground and wasn’t afraid of a few protective brothers. The storyline was great. One thing that I loved so much is a mention of a town of another series by Maryann. Love that part. This collaboration by Maryann Jordan and Kris Michaels is an amazing idea and this series is a must read by fans of protective and loyal alpha males. Can’t wait now for the next book in this series.
Another winning story from Maryann Jordan in her wonderful new Hope City series collaboration with Kris Michaels, Carter is a mix of keep you guessing intrigue and heart warming romance. Carter Fiske is a dedicated detective trying to find answers to a series of deaths among the homeless community that seem to be related to prescription drugs. His investigation brings him into contact with Tara Wilson lead social worker at a homeless shelter. Neither is looking for a relationship but strong, solid Carter and caring, nuturing Tara are perfect for each other and as the investigation builds so does their relationship. Family is at the heart of this series so of course Carter has to run the gamut of the protective McBride and King males but easily stands up for himself proving on more than one occasion he is the man for Tara and her daughter Colleen. The suspence keeps going throughout, you think you have an idea of who is responsible but can't quite put it all together until the end. I love the glimpses of all the other great characters in this series and knowing that their stories are to come, I can't wait. It's a great story and I thoroughly recommend it. I received an ARC of this book and all views expressed are my own.
I can’t express how much I love this story!! It is a book that I couldn’t put down once I started reading. The story moved at a good pace with a great suspenseful storyline along with humor and swoony romance. I absolutely loved when all the McBride and King guys showed up and cornered Carter in the pub. And Tara’s daughter Colleen was an adorable part of the story.
“Her daughter’s typical enthusiastic nod was slower as she yawned widely. “Uh-huh. I like our new friend, Mom. Can we keep him?”
Carter is a standalone story in the Hope City series. This story and this series are a definite new favorite!! -5 Stars!-
Tara runs a homeless shelter and love to make sure everything and everyone is ok. Carter is doing an investigation of a horrible situation. He has to go interview everyone at the shelter and runs into Tara. Sparks fly like fireworks but do either of them have the time for each other?
This is the second book in the Hope City Series by master writer, Maryann Jordan. This book will grab your attention right at the beginning and you will find it hard to put down. This is Tara and Carter's story. He is the detective investigating some murders of homeless people and she is a divorced, single mom social worker who runs the homeless shelter. She just happens to be the sister of two of his detective friends. In true Maryann fashion, this is a well written book with great characters who are well developed and have a lot of depth. Plenty of drama, some danger and lots of substance. This is a book that you will enjoy and will make you want to read other Maryann Jordan books. I read an arc and voluntarily chose to review.
Carter’s investigation into a series of suspicious deaths involving homeless men who are all found with drugs on their persons leads him to Tara and the Ever Hope Homeless Shelter.
Tara is a social worker who manages the Homeless Shelter that has connections with some of the men. Between being a single mother and her devotion to helping those that are the most vulnerable she isn’t looking for love or a relationship. What starts out as a way for Carter to get the information he needs becomes something much deeper but between her brothers, her past and the investigation things are about to get complicated.
The characters are compelling and the storyline draws you in and keeps you captivated until the last page.
It is through Kris Michaels that I was introduced to Maryann Jordan as a writer. They have teamed up to write the Hop City series and together they write some tense, suspenseful and wonderful stories. I love some seriously alpha men and the women that tame them.
Love these books and the spin off series. They keep on getting better and better.
You don't know what you are missing if you don't read these authors work.
This is book 2 in the Hope City series and can absolutely be read as a stand alone although I loved the first duet book so I recommend that book as well! In this one we get Detective Carter Fiske and Tara McBride Wilson's story. Carter is the detective in charge of finding out not only what happened to a man found next door to a townhouse that was on fire but also in charge of finding out where the drugs found in his pocket came from and hopefully get them off the street. Tara is a single mom who is also the social worker in charge of Ever Hope Homeless Shelter. When Carter comes to the shelter and asks some questions in the hopes of finding out the answers he needs, he asks her out in the hopes of getting help with his investigation. What he doesn't expect is to start to fall for her. And finding out that she is the sister of two detectives that he is friend's with doesn't help either. When Tara finds out that things that they spoke of have been used in his investigation, she feels used and lied to. After what happened with her ex, she doesn't want to be hurt that way again. But when danger comes her way, can he not only keep her safe but make everything right between them?
I absolutely loved this one! Tara is this super strong woman who has been hurt in ways that someone shouldn't have been. But she also has a heart of gold and is just naturally nurturing. And the way she is with her daughter? I loved that!! She's tough when she has to be but also isn't afraid to do the work for the things that she wants or needs. Carter is this man who is a little bit of a player but once he meets the one he knows is for him, he doesn't hesitate to reform. He is this stand up, sweet, and lovable man who will do anything for the people he cares about. The way he isn't afraid to own up to his mistakes alone made me love him. And then the way he was with her daughter? Perfect. I was hooked from the start and didn't want this one to end at all! But I do have to say after reading this one, I need her sister's story!! I need to know what happened to her!!
Detective Carter Fiske is leading an investigation into the deaths of several homeless men. Each man is found with a small sandwich bag of various drugs. While discussing the case with various co-workers in the DEA and fire department, they try to refer Carter to their sister for further assistance. But they always get interrupted before he finds out her name. When one of the clues leads him to the Hope City Homeless Shelter, Carter is directed to Tara—the shelter’s social worker/director. In the back of his mind, Carter wonders if Tara is his friend’s sister. But Tara has a different last name, so he doesn’t make the connection—until it’s too late...
Tara, a social worker/director, for Hope City Homeless Shelter has devoted her life to caring for others. She was the middle child, but first girl in her family. She was the “second mother” to her younger siblings and next door neighbor’s kids. After divorcing her worthless husband, Tara’s life was devoted to caring for her daughter Colleen. Between work and Colleen, Tara wasn’t looking for a relationship or love. Until Carter walks into her life...
Although this is the second book in the Hope City series, you do not have to read the first novel in order to read Carter. Maryann Jordan combines the right amount of chemistry, suspense, romance, and everyday life into her novels. I enjoy reading a believable story that could really happen in life. In the medical field, drug reps run rampant and are in EVERY doctor’s office, hospital trying to “sell” their specific drug. I can easily see how a dishonest person could illegally peddle medications and the harm that they could do. I enjoyed seeing the big “Alpha” detective fall for Tara and Colleen, even realize dreams he didn’t even know he had. I also liked the “protective, big brother” scene and scary pirate scene. Too funny! A truly enjoyable novel. I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
Carter, the second book in the Hope City series, was classic Maryann Jordan and therefore one you will enjoy. If like me , you did not read book 1, no worries, this is truly a stand alone. Carter Fiske is a detective in Hope City. A third homeless man has been died and he’s trying to figure out what’s happening. All were carrying pharmaceutical with them and in their system. When he starts to investigate the homeless shelters he meets Tara Wilson, the woman in charge of Ever Hope Homeless Shelter. Their first meeting is less than stellar, but that doesn’t stop Carter from admiring her and being drawn to her. Not realizing she was also related to someone he knew or that their lives would change forever. As the plot thickens, and the unknown continues to grow, so does the relationship. Will they take a chance at love and trust each other? Will they survive the danger and find their HEA? Aside from the entertaining story, kudos to the author for the reminder that homelessness is a serious issue. Because of an illness, job loss etc, lives can change and homes are lost forcing individuals and families to be out in the streets. Then you have the veterans who return with PTSD, injuries, some with no family support, and they too end up in the streets when in fact these brave men and women should be helped and not turned away. So, thank you for that reminder. Looking forward to the next book in the series. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I have to confess, I've read the 'Hope City Duet' but haven't reviewed it yet. Now it's at the top of my list because many of the people in this book are introduced in that duet.
Carter is investigating homeless deaths that have a connection to the drugs found on the bodies. It's not easy to find clues or evidence. Two of his friends on the force, Sean and Kyle, start to tell him to contact their sister who might be able to help, but they are always interrupted.
Tara runs the Ever Hope Homeless Shelter, they have programs to help the residents get back on their feet. They are not a single night type of shelter. She meets Carter as he's looking for clues as to the identity of the latest homeless man. When she recognizes the man in the photo Carter asks if she could identify the body. Although shaken she agrees. This wasn't going to be the last she sees of Carter in the course of this investigation.
Carter visits again the next day, requesting more information.
Visits to the clinic next door to the shelter don't yield much more than other leads to follow.
I really loved the way Carter gets a sort of lunch date with Tara using the investigation as an excuse. That begins an interesting relationship that will have a few ups and downs.
This book grabbed hold of me on the first page and kept me enthralled to the very end. There is plenty of suspense, intrigue and twists with a simmer to sizzle romance that rounds everything out.
I can't wait to read the next book in this dual author series.
Carter is the second book written by a Maryann Jordan in the Hope City Series. I love the book and the characters. The story is full of suspense, great characters and romance! (I just love these two families!) Carter Fiske is a detective investigating the deaths of some homeless men where drugs are involved. Tara McBride Wilson is in charge of one of the homeless shelters in Hope City. What’s great is that they meet and decide on their level of interest in one another without either need them knowing that Tara has brothers with whom Carter knows and works! She is a single mom who was burned romantically so she is focusing on her job, her daughter and her family. Carter is married to his job and has no interest whatsoever in meeting anyone special. While investigating the homicides, these two get to know one another and are definitely interested. He is a doll and falls for both Tara and her daughter pretty quickly. Tara falls for Carter because he is such a great guy and has many qualities like those of her brothers and father, including his protectiveness. I also loved the mention of Baytown! If you are a Maryann fan, you won’t want to miss this new addition to her new series. Can’t wait for Kyle’s story! I received an ARC and this is my unbiased review.
Carter is the second book in The Hope City series. This is an absolute awesome book to read. There is so much intrigue, suspense, trust and love. The true meaning of family comes across so well. Carter Fiske is a dedicated detective who is investigating deaths of three homeless men. Each have small bags of drugs on them. So are their deaths drug related? This investigation leads him to Tara Wilson, she is the head social worker for the homeless shelter. This is where Carter and Tara meet, sparks fly but under all of the banter is a strong tug for them both. It is beautiful to watch their relationship develop. They are perfect for each other and their chemistry is off the charts. Now all he has to do is prove that he is the man to stand up to the McBride Brothers but also the King Brothers who are so very protective of both Tara and Colleen So in the meantime, not only does Carter have to navigate his relationship with Tara and investigation into the deaths of the three homeless men. Now the question is: Who gave them the drugs? How were they distributed? Can he keep Tara and Colleen safe? I can’t wait for the next in the series. I received an ARC of this book and all views expressed are my own.
Detective Carter Fiske is on a mission to find out why three homeless men have been found dead with drugs on them and in their system at the time of death. It is suggested to him that Tara McBride might be able to help, as she is the head social worker at a homeless shelter. He meets her under her married name and only later when they are entangled does he find out who she is.
Ms. Jordan wrote a great story with intrigue, action, romance and one scene stealing little girl named Colleen. I loved Colleen from the minute she appeared in the book. Ms. Jordan's characters are real and down to earth. She writes strong female characters that a reader can easily identify with and the male characters are over protective alpha males who are irresistible and well drool worthy. The story line here is filled with intrigue and it's written in such a way that you know it will be continued with Kris Michaels next book. They flow seamlessly from one story to the next. Hope City is a wonderfully written series with everything I love about this genre in the series. I can't wait to see how this case continues on in the next book.
This book was absolutely perfect. Maryann Jordan co-authored with Kris Michael on this. Carter (Hope City, book 2) is about Carter Fiske and Tara McBride Wilson. Carter is a handsome, well-built, hot detective investigation a string of deaths involving the homeless community. He finds that at least three of the deaths, these individuals have visited one specific homeless shelter, Ever Hope Homeless Shelter. While questioning the staff at this shelter he meets Tara Wilson (Wilson is her married name, McBride was her maiden name). Tara is the lead social worker at this homeless shelter. Tara is also the sister of two McBride detectives, who Carter is friends with. Tara is a beautiful, strong, compassionate, single Mom to a very exuberant daughter, named Colleen. Tara has been burned by her ex-husband, so is very cautious about the handsome detective, who she finds herself thinking about way too much. I do not like spoilers, so that is all I am saying. Just know that in true Maryann Jordan fashion there will be a big misunderstanding, danger, chemistry, and we get to see a beautiful relation grow, and let’s not forget the steamy sex scenes. I really loved Carter (Hope City, book 2). Maryann Jordan always has amazing characters and storylines. It is always hard for me to choose a favorite character because each book is amazing. I read this in one sitting because the suspense was killing me. I just could not figure out who the bad guy/guys were. This is a must read. You will not be disappointed. I wonder what Maryann Jordan will deliver next. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.

Carter is a police detective, recently there seemed to be a lot of homeless people dying that all seem to have prescription drugs which also include opioids and now he has to find out what is going on. Tara is a social worker at ever hope and a single mum after her husband wanted more from life and walked away after eight years, now years later her life is dedicated to her daughter and ever hope homeless shelter. Carter and Tara's chemistry was so strong and hot that you could feel it coming off the pages of the book but will Tara act on it as it could effect her daughter, only time will tell. This book was full of twists and turns along with loss, heartache, pain, betrayal, secrets and many emotions and that is what makes it a truly amazing book. Maryann Jordan is an incredible author and writer and one of my favourite authors and her books are real page turners and so addictive that you can not put them down. I definitely recommend that you read this book and others by her and you will not be disappointed. I Voluntarily Reviewed an Arc Copy of this book.
Maryann Jordan never disappoints and always delivers with every book she writes. Every character is well thought out, There's a genuineness that makes rhem totally relatable and always feel like I know them well. The storylines surround and embrace the characters as it draws you in. Carter is a wonderful romantic suspense about two ordinary people impacting the daily lives of others just by doing their jobs well. A big plus? Carter hails from Baytown!.
Carter Fiske loves being a detective. It's not for fame or glory but it's a way make a difference even if it's only one case at a time. Tara Wilson performs minor miracles daily in her role as head social worker in a homeless shelter. She gives hope and solace to those in need. Thrown together because of police investigation, their attraction is palpable from the moment they meet. Although neither of them were looking for a relationship, the side eye glances and tentative touches turn into soul deep kisses and steamy interludes. Factor in an ebullient and precocious six year old, you've got the promise of a forever love.
This new series is a little different than the other Maryann Jordan books only because it started as a duet with another author. I wasn't sure how I felt about that at first but the concept is brilliant. 2 great authors sharing characters and the story lines somewhat overlap. Carter was a good read and once I started I couldn't put it down. The story centering on mysterious deaths of homeless veterans was intriguing and had me on turning the pages. I alsways love the way Maryann works in current issues especially those dealing with Veterans. They discuss mental health issues, homelessness and addiction. It makes the story very real. Tara (McBride) works at the shelter and they connect during Carters investigation. I absolutely loved them together, their chemistry was amazing. He definitely makes a girl swoon! All in all another great story for this series and I can't wait to read whats next. So many characters waiting to get their story! Enjoy!!
Carter is the second book by Maryann Jordan in the Hope City series she’s writing with Kris Michaels, each writing their own books. Carter is a detective working on deaths involving homeless men when his case has him going to a shelter to see if he can find information on the men he meets the head social worker Tara Wilson. Tara a divorced single mom has her hands full with her daughter Colleen and as the head social worker at a homeless shelter. Tara grew up in a family of police as a McBride where service runs in the family. Almost instinct attraction what starts out as business involves into more. As always Maryann writes strong women and Tara is just that as Carter truly and alpha but with the heart we all want in a man. The story has enough suspense that keep you turning the pages since Maryann always keeps you guessing! Oh a throw in a adorable Colleen and what more could you ask for!
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, sadness, secrets, pain, suspense, and heartbreak.
This is Tara and Carter’s story. Tara has trust issues and is not looking for a man to date. She wants to take care of her daughter. Carter is working on an investigation and figures a great way to get answers is to try and date Tara. If he can get her to answer all his questions, he might be able to solve his case. Only issue is that he never thought he would fall for her. When the truth comes out about how they started dating she is hurt and does not want him around. Problem is he wants her forever. He knows he will have to prove himself, but he must get them out of danger first. Can he solve the case all the while trying to prove his intentions?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
I love the Hope City series and Maryann Jordan has written another awesome entry into that series. Carter Fiske is a detective investigating the deaths of three homeless men. He meets Tara Wilson at a homeless shelter, where she is Exec Director. Cater has just gotten shod of a causal fling and Tara is divorced with a young child, so both are caution and neither are looking for a relationship. But that is exactly what they find because they are perfect for each other. Meanwhile, Carter is investigating the deaths which seem to be related to a prescription drug ring. I changed my mind several times as I tried to figure out who guilty, but Ms. Jordan is great at leading you then throwing you off. There is plenty of suspense and romance. Perfect combination!! Not to mention the McBride family and King family!! It was so good!!! Can’t wait for the next installment!!
Another great read by this author and new installment in the Hope City series. Carter is a detective investigating deaths of homeless men found with drugs. They all have been to a shelter run by Tara, who also happens to be the sister of a few men in the same field as him. Tara runs the shelter and is upset that one of the men found dead she had tried to help. As Carter gets close to Tara to help his investigation, he doesn't expect to actually fall for the beautiful single mom and wants more. There a few things standing in their way...shes a single mom, her brothers and the investigation....can they make it work. I loved this read that had steam...oh steam....suspense...amazing characters and what I loved the most....little to no drama between them. The story flowed beautifully and I couldn't get enough of these two....cant wait for the next one!! *I voluntarily received an advanced copy and expressed my honest opnion*
Carter Book 2 in The Hope City Series was completely captivating and utterly suspenseful. Riddled with intrigue, suspense, humour, and love this romantic suspense grabbed my attention from the first page up until the very last word. Detective Carter Fisker is investigating the deaths of three homeless men. His investigation leads him straight to Tara Wilson (aka McBride) who is the lead social worker at the homeless shelter. The chemistry between these two was instant and sizzling, the occasional banter hilarious and watching their relationship develop was heartwarming. Tara’s daughter Colleen was utterly adorable. Her interactions and growing relationship with Carter pulled at each and everyone of my heartstrings. The loyalty and love between the McBride’s and Kings intertwined throughout the story is beautiful and heartwarming and I can’t wait to devour each of their stories. A highly recommended read!
This is a great book to start with if you have never had the pleasure of reading a story by Maryann Jordan. Her books are full of spice, action, love, good people and so much more that will keep you riveted to each page. Carter Fiske is a is a detective who finds himself investigating the deaths of three homeless men. Tara Wilson is a social worker who is in charge of the Hope City Shelter and has dedicated her life to trying to make a difference in the lives of men and women who find themselves down on their luck. She has just come out of a very bad marriage but despite all the bad that happened during that marriage she was blessed with Colleen who is a beautiful young daughter who is the joy of her life. This book has it all, hot men, strong beautiful women, action, mysteries to solve and just all around wonderful characters. Don't miss this book!
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest and totally voluntary review.
Carter Fiske, Hope City detective, has been assigned a case involving three homeless veterans, all found dead with plastic baggies of drugs in their pockets. Carter finds a nexus at Ever Hope Homeless Center, where Sean and Kyle's sister, Tara McBride-Wilson is the head social worker. Tara is now a single mother after her husband left her. She is the go-to person for not only the issues of her clients but also of her family and her six-year-old daughter. Carter meets her without connecting the name to her family, and this causes a few humorous moments. Unraveling the case with the help of a few undercover friends, Carter is able to isolate the source of the drugs, as well as part of the pipeline supplying them. And if that wasn't enough, he also gets the girl - and the little girl, too. Kings and McBrides show up shockingly often here, so readers should get used to it.
When I read the first Hope City book, I actually said I wasn't go to bother with the series as I did not like the style of writing, but I usually love Maryann Jordan book so I bought this and I enjoyed. Big improvement (for me) on the first one.
Good story line and interesting characters, not too much angst and good integration of the other characters. I look forward to Kyle(although I am skipping BrodyBrody).
This is a great one! Carter is a detective for HCPD and is tasked with finding who supplied the prescription opioids found on three homeless men. Tara is a social worker and runs a homeless shelter run by the city. Carter finds his latest victim had been at Tara’s shelter. While questioning her Carter ask her to lunch and eventually on a date. Tara is a single mom of a precious six year old. Her husband walked away. When Carter and her partner arrest a nurse giving prescription drugs to people in line for free sack lunches outside the shelter Tara accuses him of using her to get information. Carter has his work cut out for him trying to get Tara back, finding who is supplying the drugs and keeping Tara safe when danger comes calling. This book has suspense, a promiscuous drug rep, suspects galore, family, steam and love.
Carter by the talented Maryann Jordan is another great story, this has suspense, some action and the love of family and friends and definitely some romance. A very well written story with some really lovable characters. Carter Fiske is a detective investigating a homeless man's death and this is not the first homeless man who has died with a bag of prescription drugs in his pocket. He is told Tara Wilson is the person to talk to at the shelter, Tara is the head social worker at Ever Hope Homeless Shelter when the detective arrives with some questions about his case she is shocked with her reaction to the handsome detective. This is just the start of a great book it kept me hooked till the very end and I definitely recommend it. Can't wait for more from this great author.
