Bury Her Bones - a review by Rosemary Kenny

By the time you finish reading the second book in Dan Padavona's awesome Darkwater Cove Psychological Thriller series, Bury Her Bones, you'll almost certainly find (as I did), you've been unconsciously holding your breath as the delicious thrills and electric chills of Darcy Gellar's worst nightmares come to life once more.
The widowed Mom/ex-FBI profiler and her children are in terrible danger once again from the minions of her Nemesis, Michael Rivers - the serial murderer dubbed the Full Moon Killer.
This time the story is focused on Darcy's cousin Laurie's home in Scarlet River, where the Gellars go to support her, after Laurie mentions she's got someone she believes is a shy admirer following her at times.
Darcy's more cynical about the stranger's motivation, especially after learning that local girls have been getting kidnapped and murdered for a decade, with a long gap in between...she soon realises there's a link and Laurie's stalker has murder on his mind.

Who is the killer's next intended victim?
How does one of the previous victims help Darcy and Agent Hesler?

When you get your breathing and heart-rate under control again, you'll realise two things - 1) you haven't thought about Covid-19 at all, as Bury Her Bones is so riveting and
2) you can't wait to get your hands on the next book in the incredible, amazing, unputdownable Darkwater Cove Psychological Thriller series as soon as possible, to continue Darcy and her family's fantastic story. Luckily there's not long to wait!
What are you waiting for? Go, NOW!!

Illogical and wooden characters, awkward writing

I read the first and second book in the series because I was I found the premise interesting: ex-FBI profiler recovering from the trauma of being nearly killed being stalked by copycats under the control of the serial killer she put in prison.

After a strong start, annoying gaps in story logic and lack of character development start to grate on my nerves. The main character of Darcy repetitively makes bad choices: she knows there's a killer out there, but she goes out alone with her gun without telling anyone (sherrif or FBI who are swarming the town she's in). Her children are written as stupid, spoiled and self-absorbed characters who can't seem to understand the danger they're in and constantly put themselves in danger. All the rest of the characters are just backdrops and props. Poor Hensel, solid FBI partner of Darcy, decides to take vacation days to hang out with them in a drafty farmhouse chopping wood and hanging doors - but why??? Because he wants to get her back as a profiler? Because he's her conscience?

The writing is also absurd: headlights are "swords slicing" into the night; all the characters "glare" at one another.

There could have been good stories here, but I don't have sympathy for stupid characters anymore.

Darcy Gellar, former FBI profiler, was one of the top profilers. But, because of a serial killer called the Full Moon Killer, she almost lost her life. She has anxiety attacks and couldn't go on with the FBI anymore. She takes her teenage children, Jennifer and Hunter and moves. But, that town just results in more killings and it looks like the Full Moon Killer is back, but it can't be he is in prison.

Now she takes her children and moves to Scarlett Rivers where her cousin lives. Someone is now following her and has left the Full Moon Killer's writings on her building. But going to Scarlett Rivers will be the end for Darcy? She knows the Full Moon Killer is controlling people on the outside and have them come after Darcy and her family.

Now Darcy's daughter is in danger, along with her cousin. Will Darcy be able to survive this attack on her family? The second in the series!

Dan Padavona did not disappoint me. In my opinion Bury Her Bones has a lot of foreshadowing and is a setup for the next book. Dan Padavona kept me on the edge of my seat turning the pages. In my opinion does a great job with suspense and mind games. In this book Darcy's flaws are showing up more and more to those around her. The one thing that is apparent is she loves her children and family and will go to the mat for them. There were a couple of twist that I was hoping would not happen but no such luck. I just hope the Michael River's story does not go on for 10 books like Scarlett Bell's story did. I can't wait for the next book. In my opinion Bury Her Bones is worth reading.

Disappointing!

I am a fan of Padavona's, but I was so frustrated at times reading this one that I made notes! I thought why would this person make that move? Not call police at certain times?etc.. Similar to our thoughts when a woman in a horror movie tries to run a hiking path in high heels, and we just say "yup, she is stupid!". That happened several times in the end and to end it, we have a violent offender that escaped prison...come on! When your characters have to make ridiculous choices to create the outcome a writer needs to make a scenario work, then it's just disappointing!

Bury Her Bones is a great psychological thriller. Dan Padavona did not disappoint in this latest page turner. Unsolved murders and kidnappings, along with her cousin’s stalker who has ties to Michael River, the serial killer that she sent to prison, bring retired FBI agent Darcy Gellar to the small town of Scarlet River. When her daughter becomes the latest victim of this local kidnapper, Gellar will have to use all of her training to find Jennifer. Time is running out! I highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Pro's and Con's

An intriguing story with a lot of twists and turns. Solving cold cases as well as current ones. Edge of the seat drama. Yet there is still a little part of me that is not bowled over by the main character. For a BAU analyst she appears to be a little more reckless than analytical. Then there is the "prescription" drug abuse. Hopefully things work themselves out in book 3 . Right! I'm hooked now.

❗️Research age demographics, CWs, and TWs for these books prior to reading to determine whether or not they're appropriate for you.

Another psychological Thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. Darcy, Hunter & Jennifer get run through the a horror scene and mentally tortured for months.

Darcy has to maintain a level of parental observation while battling an addiction to something that helps her sleep and get over her phobias of the dark.

Enjoy this Riviting Book
Happy Reading 📚 😊

No escape

Darcy and her children run to help her cousin Laurie cope. Even in prison Michael Rivera orchestrates the stalking and killing of Darcy and her family in retribution for jailing him. Fast paced. Heart in your throat read. Go get it.

Darkwater Cove

Gripping tale!! Likable characters and easy to follow. My only dislike is the missing backstory. It feels like I picked up in the middle of a series, when this is book one.
You won’t want to put this one down! Caution, don’t read before bed ;)

harrowing and unpleasant

Now I remember why I didn’t continue reading this series; the anxiety and dread of a mother unable to shield her children from a motivated predator is overwhelming, even thought my children are middle-aged!
