This book was previously published by Five Star Publishing with a different cover. The electronic rights have reverted to the author and it has been re-released with a new cover. This was the author's first book. Detectives Brandon Berger and Dawn Luke are investigating a mysterious death that leads to the doorsteps of the Magnolia Faith Church. Tight-lipped parishioners and lack of evidence stop this case in its tracks. Further north, William Chandler takes his wife and their infant daughter on a camping trip to the Skybald National Forest. After a series of strange events, William is arrested for murder. He swears he’s innocent, but the evidence is so damning, even his wife thinks he’s guilty. The Magnolia Faith Church might be the key to proving William’s innocence, but making the 251-mile connection could be deadly. Told from two points of view, HOLLOW CRIB is fast-paced and suspenseful, taking readers down separate paths toward a single unexpected and explosive conclusion.

In this first in a series, the reader is presented with storylines involving two different marriages--one a police detective trying desperately to keep an anniversary promise to his wife, and the other a man taking his wife and infant daughter on vacation to the very spot where he watched his father die in a violent accident 22 years earlier.
As might be expected, Detective Brandon Berger is prevented from keeping his promise to his spouse. A mysterious death and duty derail his plans and put his marriage in jeopardy. Meanwhile, tragedy again intrudes on the life of William Chandler with the result he's accused of murdering both his child and another man.
Bourg presents these two storylines in alternating chapters until--surprise, they converge in an unexpected and shocking conclusion.
A twenty-five-year veteran of law enforcement, Bourg has the credentials to accurately depict crime investigation. He's also a skilled writer who knows how to present a fast-paced, suspenseful story that compels the reader to keep flipping pages and wondering what's going to happen next. A native of Louisiana where this story is set, he's also the author of two other mystery series and many short stories. This was actually the author's first book, originally published in 2016 by Five Star Publishing. He's since written and published numerous others, many of which I've read and enjoyed.

Holy moly! What the actual hell?? That's my thoughts right now because I did NOT see that coming!

This book is amazing! So much suspense & mystery! Bj has left me wanting more & guessing from beginning to end! I didn't want it to stop or end. The author has the ability to take different story lines and completely intertwine them by the end of the book in a way like no other!! I can't wait to grab book #2 & dive in.

The story started out all right – though it was slow and alternated between two separate story lines that didn’t seem the least bit connected. Then about ½ through it all fell apart for me.

I was tempted to stop reading but I’d invested so much time into the book, I persevered to the end because still at the halfway point I didn’t know how these two story lines connected. Nor why one of the major players was suddenly being arrested for murder.

Unfortunately, it didn’t get any better and the ending was not the shocking twist that was promised. You pretty much knew what the deal was about 4 chapters before it was revealed.

Too many plot holes, too many contrived situations to make the story line ‘work’ and too many things that I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief over.

For me, the book was a disappointment.

This seems to be the first of a duology that takes place before the London Carter series. We’re introduced to Dawn Luke in this book, and she doesn’t seem like the same character as she is in the LC series. It will be interesting to see if her character arc in the next book supports who she becomes of if she was retooled to suit the new series.

The plot in this story feels equally divided between a detective (Brandon Berger) whose job demands put a strain on his marriage and an innocent victim in another area who’s been framed for crimes he didn’t commit. Honestly, I bonded more with the victim than I did with the hero, though I did feel bad for Brandon because his wife came off as selfish.

The way these plots collide was predictable, and the climax seemed rushed. Because I’m familiar with the names and area at this point, and because there’s only one book left in this two-part prequel, I’m going to read the next and final book. It should close a few loose ends I encountered in the other two series. But this has been the least engaging of all the works. That’s not to say it’s bad. It’s not. It’s just not as good as the others.

So going into this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it because the beginning was kinda slow and I tend to be the type that if I'm not hooked by the third or fourth chapter, I'm not gonna be hooked at all. That being said though, once I got around to the eighth or ninth chapter, I couldn't put it down!!!! (Hence me finishing the rest in about 2 hours lol). My favorite character (and in my opinion, the most dimensional and well-written in this book) was William Chandler. Throughout the book, I found myself feeling frustrated and angry and sad on his behalf (I'm not gonna lie, I'm still harboring some resentment against that Detective London guy) and when I got to the end, I felt his joy and pleasant disbelief at how his circumstances had changed. My only complaint was that I wasn't too crazy about how in detail the book would talk about types of knives and guns (I kinda just skimmed those parts lol).

...

As someone who can typically call what's gonna happen next in books/movies/tv shows, I was surprised to be surprised by the ending of the book! By the last chapter, I was practically jumping pages to find out what Meagan had confessed and if/how it would effect Chandler's innocence. Basically, the suspense was killing me and it took everything in me not to just jump to the end and find out what happened. All in all, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery/suspense novels, especially ones that talk about courtroom trials/the criminal justice system.

I’ve read most of this author’s other books and have always enjoyed them. For some reason I left this one sitting in my TBR for quite a while. I’m glad I finally got to it.

I initially bought this book when it was mentioned in one of the other series. It involves a cult like church, an innocent man accused of murdering his infant daughter, and the strange circumstances that tie what appear to be completely unrelated things together.

The book is kind of slow moving at first and I almost stopped reading as there was little progression in the story arc and I was beginning to not care about what happened. But I stuck it out at when things finally picked up speed it got much better. I spent so much time feeling awful for the innocent man and furious with everyone in the justice system for their horrid treatment of him and the lack of professionalism displayed. I was left unsatisfied by the ending because there is no follow-up on the fallout of the big climactic ending of the crisis moment. I sure hope the innocent guy got a good lawyer!

This was actually a great story, but the description of what happened to William in jail was unnecessarily descriptive and added very little to the story - nothing that wouldn't have been added by leaving it at a blanket party without the afterparty. Yeah, I know that's a little vague for some people, but it's intentional.

I'm also horrified that a law enforcement officer would deliberately lead a witness to this extent. No, it's not enough that he later regrets it and apologizes. Sadly, I've seen ample evidence to support that this kind of thing regularly happens, even with well-respected law enforcement veterans. The pressure to put someone behind bars so it looks like you've done something about it sometimes overrides the need to see justice served. We need to stop evaluating officers and district attorneys by their arrest and conviction records. I'd rather they lose once in a while than be so focused on convicting someone quickly that they put an innocent person through hell to bolster their numbers. That it was mostly based on circumstantial evidence and conjecture just makes it that much worse. Thankfully, I believe any competent attorney could probably have most of that thrown out and the only reason it was overlooked here is that the plot required it.

As for the rest of the story, it was very well done. So many different things going on that don't fit together the way anyone expected. I knew before I started the book that the two separate storylines would come together at the end, but even without that I probably would have kept reading. There was enough going on in each storyline to keep me interested, and the way that they came together wasn't even the most interesting part.

In one storyline, Claire and William Chandler are camping with their 6-month-old daughter, Grace, when Claire falls into rough water and William leaves Grace sleeping in their tent to go in after her. When they return to their campsite they find a bear has mauled Grace. While rushing to bring her to a hospital they go off the road and aren't found until a couple of days later. William wakes up chained to his hospital bed, under arrest for the murder of his daughter and another man who had been seen around the campground.

In the other storyline, Detective Brandon Berger is trying to balance his work and home life while investigating a mysterious death leading straight to a local church. Several events over the course of a year lead to the same church, so it doesn't take a genius to figure out the church plays some role in both storylines. It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it felt real.

Each chapter switches between two apparently different plot lines but any reader can figure out they will merge eventually. The action kept me engaged. There were some issues with the defense that made me roll my eyes. Really? You never checked that? The "that" no one checked or even seemed to think of checking was a whole list of evidence that any investigating law enforcement or any defense attorney would have checked, but the dramatic conclusion could not have occurred.

The other thing that got to me was, whether it was the character or the author I don't know, there seemed to be shock that someone would contribute $40/week to a church. Many Christians contribute ten percent and many people earn over $400/week so this is not outrageous. In this case the minister was a fraud and abuser, but in real churches that money does not go to the minister. Most ministers receive a modest salary and the rest of the contributions go to support the building, staff and ministries of the church. I could not tell if there was antagonism toward believers in general or just in this case where they were obviously dealing with a cult.

A bit disappointing - read on KU

I read these series out of order. I read the Clint Wolf series first, then London Carter's, and then went back for this one. This story is referenced so many times in the London Carter story - particularly the church. I expected a lot more investigation into the church. There was very little.

Too much of the story was from the victim's POV.

As with all of his books, they need better editing. I think he knows proper grammar, but there are errors.

I do think Mr. Bourg does a great job of accurately describing police procedure. It isn't perfect, but the stories aren't filled with 30 minute turn around times on DNA and things like that. If you read this book and are on the fence about his others, I do recommend his other series. The first 3 in the Clint Wolf series had a lot of carry over from book to book, but the series i.proved after that. I liked all of the London Carter series.

Lots of unfinished story lines

1. Why didn’t Claire recognize her baby when she found her and picked her up
2. Why didn’t detective London follow up on the park rangers about the names and cars parked in the parking lot
3. What motive did Claire have to testify against her husband that he pushed her in to the River and he killed their daughter.
4. The coroner claimed the baby was smothered, but if she died from being sick how could she testify the baby was smothered.
5. Why didn’t the person who was caring for Gracie not come forward in over a year to return the child to the mother.
6. Was the care taker jailed for kidnapping or conspiracy.
7. Did they jail and convict the preacher “father Nelson. “
I think these questions should have been answered in a summary at the end of the book. So many unanswered questions

Captivating, harrowing nightmare of a murder mystery

Bourg sure can write a story that keeps the reader twisting in the wind. Hollow Bond begins with a nice little family on a camping trip. The camping trip quickly turns into a story from hell when the husband finds himself in the frigid ravine trying to save his wife who has fallen into the water. By the time they arrive back at their campsite , they find a bear and their 6 month old daughter who has been mauled beyond recognition. As they race to a hospital he loses control of the brakes and the car tumbles into a canyon. Eventually he awakes to find himself recovering from surgery and cuffed to the hospital bed accused of murder. And that’s just the beginning. Read it. Highly recommended.

I really liked this book. Constantly full of excitement. William and his wife & baby went to a camp ground to spend a few days there in the mountains. They came across a weird Army veteran & his pit bull.. Also a young couple who they made friends with. Things turned really crazy then for this family. His wife almost drown , A bear attacked, their baby was hurt so they speed off to get to the hospital and ended up in a serious car crash. Then the craziness got worse each and every day for William. He was accused of murdering the veteran guy & his dog ,his own daughter and also of trying to drown his wife. He goes to Jail. No one believes him. What a nightmare he goes thru.

Although sharing a location with the London Carter series, and one or two of the same characters, this is a different style of book.

The London Carter series focuses very much on the police point of view, getting into the heads of those on the force and following their actions in detail. Hollow Crib, in contrast focuses an individual who is both victim and victimised and who goes through all sorts of horrors - partly at the hands of the police (though not those of Magnolia Parish). The characters of the police are comparatively lightly drawn and don't have the same impact as those in Bourg's other two series.

I found this book difficult to finish - not because it is badly written, but because personally I don't like reading graphic descriptions of people being victimised and abused. Other people may not have this problem and may enjoy it much more. I did finish it and the ending is satisfying.

There are some plot holes which I think become more evident when you think about the story after you have finished, rather than while you are reading it. I would advise not reading the review on Amazon.com which is entitled "SPOILER ALERT" as it really does spoil the ending of the book.

THIS STARTED OUT RATHER STRANGE BUT INTERESTING, KEPT ME TURNING THE PAGES. I TRIED TAKING LITTLE ONES CAMPING (my husband’s idea) FOR ME IT WAS A DAY FROM HELL. MEN THINK FISHING AND SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS ARE GREAT. NOT WITH LITTLE KIDS IT AIN’T. WILLIAM & CLAIRE ARE TWO OF THE DUMB-ASSED PARENTS, WHY WOULD YOU STAY IN THAT SITUATION? I REALLY DIDN’T CARE FOR THE SWITCHING BACK & FORTH BETWEEN 2 STORY LINES BUT THIS WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK. I WAS HAPPY & PROUD OF MYSELF BECAUSE I HAD IT FIGURED OUT WAY BEFORE THE END. THIS WAS VERY GOOD. ;D

Desperate Measures

Two seemingly unrelated storylines converge when an innocent man on trial for murder makes a desperate move to learn the truth. This will bring him into the orbit of a Louisiana investigator with work/family balance issues and a strong suspicion about a charismatic preacher and his followers.

Although this book started slowly it picked up in the end. The plot was good although there were certainly some gaps that made me question the murder charges. The court room scenes were realistic and the resolution was satisfying.

"Two police investigations happening at the same time but in totally two different parts of the same state could be possibly be connected."

I found this book in the library. I took interest in it because of the plot summary, and it is set in Louisiana, my home state. It is a quick but very juicy and interesting read. I love mystery movies and shows, but I've never read a mystery book. This is my first time stepping into the mystery genre, and it was amazing.

Bourg is a fantastic writer. I'm looking forward to reading more of his books.

This was a really good book with unsuspected twists and turns. But I have mixed feelings about it. It was almost too suspenseful, too gut wrenching, hard to keep in mind this is fiction. It can really shake any faith in law, justice…faith that is already very shaky, if it exists at all. Maybe because it’s expedient, circumstancial evidence is taken at face value. It’s easy, solves the problem, move on to the next without any thought to the harm done to the innocent party…a fictious story depicting reality.

Enjoying Another BJ Bourg Series!

My wife and I have read the entire London Carter 6 book series. Loved every booked. Then we read Clint Wolf 16 book series. Again the best of the best. Book 17 was just released.
Now one more book in the Magnolia Parish series.
This author writes fantastic novels. He even introduces characters in one series as guest characters in a second series.
Read his books a series at a time in order. Promise you a great trip!

Camping in dark and dangerous forest

Adventure and compelling story of two men and their women trying to make life work while balancing job and family. Vacation turns into horror while suspicious people don’t keep their distance. Lives are completely turned upside down. Suspicion lurks in all directions. Page turner and unbelievable twists.

This held promise at the start.. I had a good feel for the characters and plot(s) but then I realized the story shifted from plot to sub-plot with each new chapter and it began to be annoying.. And the more I read, the less believable the plot lines became until both plots merge at the end to one head shaking finale. Not interested in reading more of this series.

Great book

I enjoy reading anything by this author. This one had so many twists I wasn't sure where the story was going. Will is arrested for murdering his daughter, Gracie. He hopes to prove his innocence and find the person responsible. We get a glimpse of what child killers get when they are incarcerated. If you love a great mystery this book is the one.

The stories csme together at the end

All BJ Bourg come together at the end of the novel. This story seemed like two separate tell and totally unrelated. I never dreamed the conclusion of this novel could have a relationship between to two totally isolated subjects. I'm glad I didn't stop reading tge novel. Excellent ending

Really enjoyed until the end

I was hooked into the story and was curious as to how it would end. I won’t say a lot so as not to possibly spoil, but the ending was one of those where it is somewhat confusing to follow. Not so as to ruin the whole book, but still for me a thud.

But besides the ending a good read.

A tale to make you look over your shoulder and shiver

A family camping trip goes horribly wrong. Innocence is brushed aside, they have a man in custody why look further. Then a man on the run and two cases collide. The ending is both happy but overshadowed by what had gone before. Well written, seat of your pants stuff. Look forward to reading more from this author

Two books in one

The two stories came together at the end. This was a good mystery and I enjoyed it. I just finished all of the Clint Wolf books so I had that mind set, but this was a different story. I am not big on small children murder so I had to work through that.I am looking for the next case in this series.
