It’s the beginning of the Christmas season for the tourists that had come through Crescent Cove. The Rusty Spoon is one of the staples. Not only did the townspeople expect it to be, they knew if Mitch Cooper still had one breath left in his body, but the repeat tourists did, too. They had put up, Christmas decorations already, it's all about Christmas, but don’t let anyone complain they aced out Thanksgiving. They did add just a few to say they did.
When Regina (Gina) Ramos started waitressing at the diner, she figured it would be good. Until she found something more permanent. It was a way for her to earn extra money. Five years passed, and she is still there. If you tried to give her an office job, she would get major hives. Her skin can’t breathe without the bacon, and grease in her pores. Inside joke read to see the two meanings. The diner gave her a direct line to all the 411 in the Cove. It also gave her the hours and freedom to play with side projects over the years. She also got to bartend at her sister’s bar.
Cash was not a problem for her. She had simple tastes, and a simple life small things made her happy. What can I say her family is a crazy hoot, it’s big, and a big influence in her life. At any given time, her family would pop in, and of course, that day for her do. Her mom, Bonnie, and her eldest sister Erica stop by. Erica’s baby was due soon, and her mom had her out shopping for baby furniture. However, Erica was starving, and their mother had a natural ability to nag about, well everything, but about her food choices.
But, today is not the day to mess with Erica about food choices. This was Gina’s time to shine. She made her the special off-the-menu items her sister loves, especially now during her pregnancy. The entire diner scene made me laugh, with the whole rolling of their eye, but putting on their sunglasses, first. I could totally relate. The baby shower for Erica was soon. Lunch was over and the two were leaving so Gina could go back to work. Her mom said Jared (Chief) Brooks is training Christian to cover dispatch.
For when her mom is out with her sister, during maternity. Gina says she will send over cookies. After her lunch visit, she gets a call, from her BFF Jared. He is in a panic and pleads, that he needs her help now. She asked is this a real 911, or is it one you can wait till she gets off work, what type of emergency? He said after work, but he pleaded with her that he absolutely needed her. But, in her wildest dreams, she never thought what awaited her would be the biggest betrayal that could ever become a couple.
On this night for them, it meant romantic or friendship. But, the most important piece of evidence this officer, chose never to notice was that his best friend had a massive, crush on him. He had even been dreading telling, Gina when she got there. It was what got him to the point he was in, of having a baby. Because he had only ever considered them just friends. This major bump in the road, would either make or break them. And, that night alone tested every factor and nerve to its max.
I feel he took advantage of her, and her kind heart, to get what he needed. Free babysitting, not having to tell anyone, and someone to teach him how to be a parent. Then, he could kick her loose if it didn’t feel right, or he didn’t get anything in return. But, the betrayal, devastation, anger, disgust, and distrust he saw flash right before his eyes. When Gina saw his two-month-old daughter for the first time, she was left on his doorstep in the dead of winter unattended, in inadequate clothing for him to find with a note.
Saying she is his. Fear of losing Gina gripped him, like nothing ever before, he had screwed up.
