A. O'Connor is the bestselling author of The House, The Secrets of Armstrong House, The Left Handed Marriage and The Footman. A graduate in History and English from the National University of Ireland Maynooth and Trinity College Dublin, the author has contributed to two collections of short stories in aid of Barnardos Charity and played a key role in A.M.D's Fighting Blindness campaign. The House has been translated into German and the Russian edition is due for publication in 2016.
This is a fascinating series which follows generations of Armstrongs for two centuries. Beginning in the present, O’Connor weaves events in the lives of the current generation in and out of those of the past. I thought of the phrase “generational curse” while reading of the deceit that occurred repeatedly through the years.
The one thing that hinders my rating this series with 5 stars is the gratuitous and unnecessary use of the f-word that seems to be popping up all over these days. With no need for it to be used, it only detracts from the quality of otherwise good writing.
I absolutely love this book. It’s a multi generational family saga that covers 3 eras. No, it’s not Downton Abbey, but it’s very entertaining hearing about each woman as they take on the task of being Lady Armstrong. The women have been divided into each of the three sections so it’s easy to keep them straight. I’ll have to say that the characters are a bit shallow and under developed. I wanted to hear more about what made them who they were but it sure made this book perfect escapism. Eager to start the next Armstrong book in This 5 book series.
A very well written series of books. Taken as a whole, I did find it difficult at times to know where I was as the timescales did not flow in chronological order but, all the same, compulsive reading. The last book was slightly marred by several editing faults but didn’t spoil the enjoyment too much. I did wonder if we would ever hear more about Pearce’s ex wife but perhaps that was intended for another book?
This multi generational series is quite well written...the parallels of the past and present were good, showing that the past has a strong influence on the present day when secrets are kept. I would have liked to read more about some of the antagonists, such as Sinclair and Harry Armstrong, who didn't have a great deal of development and a murky future. overall, the stories progressed at a good pace though slow at times and, particularly in the last one, hurried at others
This is the story of an aristocratic Irish family and their long history. The books also deal with more modern times when Kate and Tony Fallon buy Armstrong House and restore it to hoe it looked in the past. I really enjoyed reading the story of the Armstrongs over the years and the more modern story also. A very enjoyable read.
No one as ever finished this massive mess of a series. It is a conglomerate of several books that are hit and miss and jump all over the place. Please don’t think you are getting a deal, even free it was way overpriced. I skimmed the jumped to the end, and even the 7th epilogue didn’t tie anything up. Have mercy!
I really enjoyed this the story line of this series but it was very frustrating to read because of all the typos. I find this very annoying but also frustrating when the book does not offer the option to recommend edits. I haven’t ever read a book with this many errors.
Enjoyed following all the ancestors lives and wondering why until the truth was revealed over a hundred years later. I appreciated the way the story jumped from present day back to what really happened. Interesting all the way until the end.
I really enjoyed being able to read these books in sequence. I loved the back and forth from past to present. The description of each individual character and what was done for love or greed carried the story to an enjoyable conclusion. Some secrets surely need to stay secret.
I could not put this series down, thoroughly enjoyable. Kept me guessing throughout. How they all conspired to keep the Armstrong legacy. Well written, a joy to read. You won’t be disappointed with this book.
This is a wonderful book that is written so well. Jumping back and forth between generations really holds your attention, and the end of the story is so satisfying!
