Probably one of the first philosophical questions asked by humans was whether language is innate. In the late 1970s, the eminent linguist Noam Chomsky and the famous developmental psychologist Jean Piaget met for a dispute on that particular question. What arguments did they have to offer in favor of their positions? What kind of evidences can we deliver to support either linguistic nativism (Chomsky) or constructivism (Piaget)? Is man a language machine after all?
