He is trained and ready for war. Instead of leading Marines into combat, a Marine Captain is given the mission of advising an Iraqi Army battalion in one of the most violent cities in Iraq. The collected stories span seven months of nearly constant combat in 2006 and 2007, at the height of the insurgency in Iraq. This book is the raw, visceral story of a combat advisor with a lot more combat than advising.
A Captains War is the best book l have read this year. The Captain takes you on a personal Journey of deployment that makes you feel like are right there with him. Also a story of strength and how to find yours in time of doubt. Lynda Masi
I am an almost 70 year old grandmother that usually rotates between romance novels and biographies. To my utter surprise I was spellbound by this totally unromantic, gut wrenching story. I found the captain to be so real that sometimes it felt like I could reach out and touch him. I couldn’t put it down as the Captain taught me his lessons about life and war.
"A Captain at War" is a gripping memoir that takes you straight into the chaos of Fallujah, Iraq, through the eyes of a US Army captain advising an Iraqi army battalion. The author's vivid storytelling brings to life the intense combat, cultural nuances, and human struggles that defined the war. With honest reflections on leadership, teamwork, and the true cost of conflict, this book sheds new light on moment in history. It's a must-read
Great first hand account of what it was like living through that experience during that conflict. As a person who did not have to be there, gave me perspective and a deeper appreciation for those that did go.
Highly recommend! I don't typically read this category, but Westhoff captured me immediately. Thank you for sharing and for keeping us safe while you were at war.
