Science and the Bible are often pitted against each other, causing many to either defend science at Scripture's expense, or vice versa. Instead, what if we saw them as friends? Can Christians appreciate scientific insights like they do archaeological discoveries--as a source of knowledge to illuminate the biblical world and our own?
In Science a nd the Bible , David Instone-Brewer takes a refreshing and non-antagonistic approach, asking how science can aid our interpretation of the Bible. The result is stimulating on topics such as God's omnipresence, the origin of languages, the nature of eternity, the relationship of spirit and soul, the reality of resurrection, and Jesus' human experience.
In short, readable chapters, Science and the Bible enables the curious layperson to reread the Bible with fresh perspectives from modern scientific insights.
The Scripture in Context series is driven by the conviction that there is nothing as exciting, direct, provocative, and spiritually enlightening as the Bible when we read it as it was meant to be read. Each book in the series dives into the ancient cultural context behind Bible passages, examining the effect this context had on what the Bible writers were saying and how we should understand their words today. When we read the Bible in light of its context, it is anything but boring. Instead, God's word can speak to us as powerfully as it did to those who first read it.
Can science and the Bible have any relationship? Can the Bible tell us something about science? Can science offer us more clarity on what the Bible teaches? These and other questions are asked by many Christians who over the years observe the growth of science and at the same time the depth of the Scriptures.
Personally, I have also asked myself these kinds of questions and I think it is important that we consider them seriously. Dr. Instone-Brewer offers us in this short book, a collection of articles to challenge and enrich our understanding of Scripture from science. The book entitled "Science & the Bible: Modern Insights for an Ancient Text", comprises five main sections, from the Universe, the earth, to miracles. Each section has different articles that address questions or statements that not only arouse curiosity but also understanding of some issues, such as what the Bible says about creation and what science tells us.
Something that I enjoyed about the book is its variety of articles and that at the end of each one of them, you can find a summary of the article, this allows a greater retention of the main ideas. What makes this book different from others of its kind is that it is quite accessible, you may not know much about science, mathematics or cosmology, but you will be able to understand what the author is saying. The only thing I did not like was that some articles were incomplete, that is, more space was needed to address issues such as, for example, evolution and the Scriptures. I understand that the author did a monumental job of condensing these broad themes into so few pages.
If you are looking for a book that helps you see how science can be a tool to understand what the Bible says, this one of those right books. You will enjoy each article, some more than others, but you will be challenged to rethink some issues.
The are many, many books covering the topic of Science and the Bible and there will be many more to come. It’s a topic that by definition, changes as our understanding of science changes. I was looking for much more from this book. It is a simple question/answer book. It lists questions by topic and provides a simple answer. It is written at a high school level to the the scientifically uneducated.
