A very short, nicely laid out and decorative guide to boosting your confidence.

I don't believe in meditation myself, so I didn't take part in those activities, but I did read all through the steps and came to the conclusion that just thinking confidently and pretending I have a green stone in my navel won't improve my confidence level, as I believe it comes from life experience.

Sadly it just doesn't do it for me.

This is a really good practical guide with activities to help you to identify what makes you feel confident and how to channel that confidence effectively. The book is broken down into manageable sections allowing the reader to work through things gradually without being overwhelmed.

I was able to access one of the meditations online and found this really useful as I feel being able to sit back and listen to someone allows you to focus on the words and how they impact you, there is a transcript of the meditations in the book also. However after the first meditation, I couldn't find any more of them online and therefore had to read through the transcript. This for me was not as productive as I was paying more attention to reading than actually carrying out the activity.

If you are looking for a practical hands-on book, to help you to build your confidence then this would be a good one to try. It is easy to read with examples from the author of how the activities worked for her as well as a gentle no pressure attitude to how you choose to use the book. It is also the sort of book that you could continue to refer back to and use the activities as and when needed.

The author’s goal is to help cultivate confidence at a deeper level “where your bubble of feeling good isn’t burst by outside influences, but is a deep core within you that cannot be shaken”.

“…having self-worth and feeling useful or powerful are not necessarily going to give you great confidence. After all, there are plenty of famous performers, rich, successful and adored by many, who are still unconfident”

I found this little book made mindfulness practice more accessible by breaking down exercises and concepts into short and simple steps. It’s been especially interesting to repeat Step 1: Contemplating Confidence and compare different drawings I’ve completed over time that show changes in my perception of confidence.

Step 2: Fearing Confidence touches on being aware that we might be resistant to working on our confidence. “Living in a state of confidence inevitably means we begin to see ourselves and others in a different light. That can be unsettling”.

“Sometimes we hide behind an ‘Oh that isn’t possible’ attitude, because while we are clinging to that, we don’t need to change”.

Step 3: Invoking Confidence is the idea we already have confidence within us, but maybe we need to rediscover it. “Often we can be fooled into thinking that if only certain things would happen to us, we would become confident. Learning that we control that feeling ourselves is a big breakthrough”.

The remaining steps provide more tools for practice:
Step 4: Dealing With Destructive Thoughts
Step 5: Embracing Confidence
Step 6: Saying ‘No’
Step 7: Taking it Forward

The back of the book contains a ‘Confidence Plan’ with prompts and questions to allow you to reflect further on each step, and I enjoyed the artwork throughout which was a lot of floral and simple duo-toned illustrations.

A quick and easy read, but I wish there had been a little more to it. It's basically only a few meditation exercises that didn't really do the trick for me. I would have liked the book to delve a little more into what confidence is or what it means to us. The whole thing just felt a little too superficial for me.

I received an eARC from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I keep a meditation journal so I can write down how I feel after my sessions and sometimes what I might have seen. This book helped me take a moment for myself a little more. It made me feel that the sessions were something more important and I need to keep doing them. It had helpful hints throughout the book that kept me going.

A nice quick read with helpful rituals and exercises that enable a mindset shift through integration of mind, body, and soul. If you are not willing to meditate or visualize, this book is not for you. Otherwise, you will experience magic.
