This collection contains the complete Book & Candle mystery series. All seven books are collected in this volume for the first time. This collection contains the following books:
A Witch’s Guide to Murder A Witch’s Guide to Werewolves A Witch’s Guide to Hauntings A Witch’s Guide to Vampires A Witch’s Guide to Familiars A Witch’s Guide to Time Travel A Witch’s Guide to Family.
I've always been drawn to all things witchy and mysterious, so it's no surprise that my first book should be about a witch solving a murder! I'm the author of the Book & Candle cozy mystery series. The first three books, A Witch's Guide to Murder, A Witch's Guide to Werewolves, and A Witch's Guide to Hauntings, are available now!
This an omnibus of books by Aubrey Harper about Rory Wiltz who finds herself to be from a line of witches and who is one herself. This popped up on my facebook page.
So far I've read the first one, A witch's guide to murder. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. While the intial scene is set and is very much like other books of this genre it is different and the ending is different. It is an easy read and I found myself going to bed that little bit earlier to continue reading.
So this book introduces Rory, her friend Scott and a cousin and a decease Grandmother who has not yet passed over. The relationship Rory has with her mum is interesting. The book continues and there is a plot but don't want to reveal anything that might give the plot away. Also introduces Hunter, Jack the detective and these characters develop and it appears we see more of them.
The second book 'witch's guide to werewolves', we get to meet additional characters who prove somewhat interesting and again the plot is different. We also meet Deputy Wilder and his uncle the Sheriff. We get to know more about Jack and find more about Hunter's family. We met his brother Carver in the first book and now meet his sister Jess in the 2nd book. i thought the plot was original and different. Again there is something about Rory that has me keep turning the pages and wanting to read more.
The third book ' A witch's guide to hauntings' is one that at the moment I'm still in the middle of but what is apparent that Rory is developing and also her skills as a witch.
These books were wonderful, and was actually a bit sad when I reached the end. The stories begin when Rory is contacted by her grandmother's lawyer, who informs her that her grandmother has died and left most of her wordly possessions to Rory. Rory and her best friend Scott go to the small town to find not only has she inherited her grandmother's home and pagan/occult story, she's also inherited her grandmother's ghost, and finds out that she is a "supernatural" witch. Sadly, and almost to late, she also learns that her grandmother has an evil intent regarding Rory. I recommend this series. Enjoy reading how Rory defeats her grandmother and cousin, and then goes on to deal with ghosts, werewolves, vampires and fairies, in some wonderful adventures.
Rory is a witch but doesn't know it until her grandmother, Rose, dies (rather clichéd start). Rory inheriting Rose's business and home persuades her to up sticks, dragging her friend Scott along for the ride.
She's greeted by Rhiannon, Rhi, her cousin who tries to get Rory to look into Rose's death claiming it was murder. Resolving the case is the first novel and it does move away from the very clichéd start a bit with a twist or two.
The remaining 6 books included in the box set are the continuing adventures as Rory discovers more and more about the paranormal world. They're not bad, but they are definitely not brilliant. They're also rather clichéd and nothing particularly new or different.
I think the biggest issue is that the author lacked the ability to come up with any "spells" so reverts to describing them as muttered "strange words", used "strange symbols/sigils" or just as vaguely "we repeated the words over and over".
There's also continuity issues with the story changing from two separate shops and Rose's surviving while the Crowley's went under after Rose stole "an artifact" (there's quite a few non-specific artifacts throughout) to Rose stole the business entirely. An editor should have noticed..
The ending was poorly written with the whole feud thing becoming weak, the Crawley parents being portrayed in a rather pathetic way generally and the final resolution being way too simple.
I wasn't quite sure about these books, at first. I did learn something. Not only about the books but also about myself.
These were the easiest books that I've read in a very long time. The action wasn't always constant, but the adrenaline level stayed 💯 from the first book to the last.
The characters were a total surprise, at first. Once I started getting into the story, they started fitting together perfectly. The author worked her characters with the same magic as within the story itself. The magic in is strong and true. A fantastic world she created and I enjoyed every single book. The only sad part was that it had to end.
Aubrey Harper was an unknown for me but I will read more of work. It's definitely worth every word 🙂
Rory found out what it was to be a Wiltz witch the hard way when she came to Hazeltown after her Grandmother's death and met with Grandmother's got and her cousin Rhia. Rory finds her grandmother to be evil and manipulative. The series continues with werewolves vampires, powerful manipulative either council. Family members of the enemies of the wiltz family and power hungry witches. The story contains humour with her familiar cat and her best.friend Scott. Romance is part of the story with Hunter,a male witch from the enemy family. A good story
These 7 books are so full of magic and romance and adventure - everything I love in a read! What an adventure I took through every story. There were witches, vampires, fairies, and werewolves. Even some ghosts! I like how every book had something different than the previous one, but were all related. I enjoyed every single page of the near-1,200 pages! I'm sad it's over, yet glad so I can move onto my next reading adventure! I won't say I'm not going to miss Rory's town, because I surely will and plan to look up more books by this author. Read this - it's great and well worth the length!
Firstly I want to say, if you get past the first book, I believe you will find the rest of the series an enjoyable read. If I had only gotten the first book and not the whole series, I doubt I would have touched another book from this author. It became obvious that Book 1 was her very first published book. There was much improvement between Book 1 and 2. You will still find the occasional error, eg a missing word or an missing letter, but it will not ruin the reading experience. I liked how each book was about a different topic, that Rory had to learn and experience to become a better witch.
These books 📚 have a great and original plot. There's enough action in them to defiantly keep you interested in the series. There's some grammatical errors early in the first couple of books that I had to go back to to understand what was happening but as you get further into it it's great. And those few errors are a very few. I highly recommend this box set to anyone who is interested in paranormal books. It has a romantic ending in the 7th book but it's not overly romantic. It was defiantly worth the effort and time spent on this box set.
Aubrey Harper has a very creative and excitinHtalent. She has a great and far-reaching imagination. Her characters are well written. My problem is with her heroine. Snarky, egotistical and mentally and emotionally challenged does not make a feisty heroine! It just makes a bitchy witch. Please get an editor! Too many stupid errors. Good writing spoiled by ignorance! Get help!
A series of stories about a young witch, Rory Wiltz, and her battle to break the stereotypes that surround her. It's not as if she knows she's a witch. Her mother refused to acknowledge her own. Instead, Rory has to discover everything on her own. Along the way, she learns a multitude of lessons, meets the love of her life, and proves everyone wrong. A light-hearted set of books.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Strong characters and well developed settings. Exciting with amusing exchanges between supernatural characters. Witches, werewolves, vampires and fairies. Not all is well in Hazelville there was certainly darkness with the light. The bickering between the main characters was annoying at times and didn't always appear necessary to the plot. An easy read of supernatural suspense.
I enjoyed the characters, the storyline, and the surprising twists and turns. There were a number of distractions, though, such as misused words, phrases and expressions that were interesting the first time or two but quickly became annoying when they appeared repeatedly. Overall, I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy, romance and mystery.
The storylines in this series are intriguing and imaginative, the mysteries are fine, and the lead character, Rory, is mostly likeable and so are the supporting cast. I would say that the proofing/editing is abysmal, but there's no evidence of either. In places, the flow of the story is interrupted by the need to parse the meaning of the sentences. Better execution would have rendered these four-star reads at least.
But the first book was a little slow in the beginning and the personality transitions for two of the characters was a bit sudden. Throughout the books, some actions and the like seemed a bit...unnecessary. Some things probably could have been resolved slightly faster if the main character had pulled up her pants and acted like a mature young lady and asked her mother.
This series starts out full of action and continues to go strong through every book. The characters develop beautifully, with no major softening of the plot. Evil is evil and good is good, with a few minor glitches along the way. If you like fantasy, its creatures and exciting adventures, read this series and enjoy!
I really enjoyed these books. They held the attention throughout the whole series. Each book has an ending so there are no cliffhangers but they do leave you wanting to know more. In many ways I am sad the series has ended even though the end was a happy one. I recommend these books to anyone with a liking for magic and mystery.
magic mystery and fun, all of the stories were easy to read with the last book catching you with a twist in the tail. The only thing that was a bit annoying was the fact that everyone ( including the cat) were constantly rolling their eyes!! I found this a little irritating to say the least but worth reading.
Just a wonderful boxer set so sad there were only 7 books! I loved the characters and I am very sorry the story ended as each one lead me on a journey that was like I was there watching the story unfold right before my own eyes. If you like witch books these are a must for your library..
This story read like a middle schoolers creative writing exercise. Repetitive dialogue, oversimplification of dialogue basically incredibly ifficult to read. A good editor and a few rewrites could make a difference here. The premise is promising. Unfortunately I could barely make it though the first five chapters.
I really loved this series. Rory Wiltz inherits her grandmother's shop with no idea that's she's really a witch. After meeting her grandmother's ghost and trying to solve her murder, things take an unexpected twist. I have to say that's just the first book and every one after just gets better and better. Was truly that there weren't more in the series. Read and enjoy!
Add a snarky cat, a werewolves sheriff, witches, a mundane, vampires , mystery and voila you have some enjoyable reading for a rainy afternoon. Each story could be a standalone but altogether they pass the time nicely. Add in the family feud whose offspring like each other and it's a win win.
Moving to a new town after receiving an inheritance from your grandmother you haven't seen in years, meeting her ghost and your cousin. Exciting not. Following Rory and friends thru the mayhem that has become their live. Waitress to witch, protector, investigator, and other hats as needed. Enjoyable and exciting series to read.
This series was a delight to read. The endings were not always as expected. So it made the story more challenging to determine the direction the writer was going. I felt that aspect of the story made it an excellent read. It is definitely entertaining. Try it for yourself. Enjoy.
Not witch meets girl witch but both families are on opposite sides of the fight. Will love win out when everyone is pushing them apart. Loved the series. Couldn't put it down.
If only there had been 90 percent less ."..has a point" and a hundred percent less eye rolls. I disliked the main character (R. W) }and wish there were more about Jack. He, Scott and the cat were likable.
I liked the Wiltz witches what a family! Aubrey sure knows how write interesting and thrilling stories, I couldn't wait to read the next book, hope she writes some more Wiltz tales!
While I enjoyed the stories, I found the repetitious eye rolling quite tedious . Also required the attention of a good editor, not a spell checker. Otherwise. an engaging and creative storyline.
This was a good series...enjoyed the stories but wish the romance between the main characters was a little more developed. It didn't seem important and yet much of the story is driven by that relationship.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this set of books. The characters are well rounded and the story lines kept my interest completely. Congratulations to Ms. Harper for writing a captivating series of books!
