I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. As I’ve said before, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.
This story begins with Katherine at her store, her record store, with her brother Darryl and his sons. Her nephews are looking for records while Darryl tells her about his Christmas gift to her. Basically, he’s giving her a premium membership at a nearby gym for a year. Working out is something Katherine always says she wants to do but doesn’t have time for – you know, like most of us. Basically his gift doesn’t give her much chance to back out. Katherine owns a record store in Denver, it actually sells vinyl records not CD’s or anything else sold in music stores these days. She has one employee, Paul, who is a total stoner dude. She does actually go to the gym to check it out and meets Finn, a big muscle guy and also her personal trainer. Eventually she meets another trainer, Max, who trains her in cycling and swimming. On top of both of them she meets Brody, another member of the gym, who is training for a triathlon in April.
All right, so this gym has screens in all the rooms with members and their points. Basically everything they do like cardio, weights, swimming, running, boxing, etc. counts for points. They have awards at the end of each month for the member with the most. Katherine, or Kat to her friends, is right behind Brody in points most of the time but they are definitely competing. Besides her time at the store and at the gym, Kat finds out that there’s a new store opening up near hers…and it’s another record store! It’s one of those big, corporation type stores that always end up forcing small stores to close. Due to her stress about losing her store, she’s spending tons of time at the gym trying to work off her stress. She also spends quite a lot of time dating both Finn and Max. Oh, and a few dates here and there with Brody too.
So the blurb for this story says something to the effect of “one of them had a dark secret and that the truth was shocking”. I don’t know what I was expecting the secret to be. Was he a serial killer? A serial rapist? A child molester? Then I decided that I watch way too much news and focused more on the story Ms. Cole wrote. I read the version Booksprout sent me and then I borrowed the published version via Kindle Unlimited. The final version was much better than the not quite completed version I first read. It was worth the read! I am very happy that Ms. Cole didn’t channel my twisted thoughts for the ‘dark secret’ and I had fun reading this book! My favorite story from Ms. Cole so far is The Proposition which was released in 2019, but this book is a close second!
