The image of Weber that first appeared in English-speaking academia was as the putative father of the discipline of sociology, who was mainly concerned with the methodology of the social sciences. During the period immediately after the war, professional sociologists read him with this image in mind. The popularity of Weber in the profession has since declined, but it seems that this overtly sociological interpretation remained to colour the Anglophone world's engagement of Weber. The overarching theme of Tribe's collection is that reading is neglectful and hence mistaken, and so aims to draw attention to his hitherto overlooked contributions to political theory.

As such, this collection seems rather dated, partly because of the sociological infautation with Weber in the post-war period now seems ancient history, and partly because this political reading of Weber has now become the orthodoxy.
