Grace counts her blessings at meeting Tom. He's good-looking, kind, considerate, caring. When Grace decides to ask him if he would like to move in with her, not everyone is happy. Her best friend sees something in him she doesn't like. Her parents aren't sure what to think.
Things run smoothly for awhile ... but then he doesn't pay his fair share of the bills. He becomes a little more critical ... a little more demanding. He starts separating her from her family ... her friends ...even her job.
But when he wraps his hands around her throat, she fears for her life.
This is a tense, psychological thriller, with well-paced suspense culminating in an explosive ending. The characters are deftly drawn. This author has done his homework on domestic abuse and it's scary as all get out.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of CLOSER TO YOU. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
4 star read for me overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this was a solid fast paced read which keeps you reading and wanting to find out what happens next. The character of Tom was so nasty and manipulative, and I was shouting at Grace throughout the book to wake up and realise what he was doing to her! The only reason I deducted a star was that I felt there was no surprise or shock factor with this one - it’s very similar to other types of books in this genre and doesn’t add anything different or new. Will definitely be reading more books by this author in the future 😁
Sit down and hold on for the ride! Grace lives on her own having split from her fiance a while ago. She works as an event organiser and has just met Tom through an online dating app. Her best friend Cath is deep in the throes of arranging her wedding and it is Grace who is actually doing most of it, being such a good organiser. Cath and Tom don’t hit it off, both seemingly being protective of Grace in their own way. Someone wants the butterfly for themselves and knows what Cath is really like. they won’t let her stand in their way of having Grace all to themselves. Ooooh!!! I devoured this in a few hours- I couldn’t put it down. I took to Grace and her situation and then the tension grew. OMG. I was on the edge of my seat. Adam has a talent - one that through such brilliant writing puts you on the edge of your seat and keeps you there. that slightly unsettled feeling that you can;t shake off until you know what has happened. A clever well thought out premise and and you can see- the sort of book I so love to read. Brilliant doesn’t cover it.
Such a predictable story, the author didn't even try to keep you guessing.
I thought the story kept good pace but it is unfeasible that Tom would have been able to do so much in so little time, these relationships usually take years to get to breaking point!
Men really need to stop trying to write books from a woman's perspective there is no way on this earth that a woman, suspecting that her bf is fully psychotic, would confront him on her own! You'd have at least 2 witnesses and a weapon!!!
A hard no from me xxx

Adam Croft has done it again! “Closer To You” is a brilliant psychological thriller that draws you in from the first page. The author writes in a clear and bold voice. His characters are described so well that you really think you know them. The story flows seamlessly and had me screaming in my head “No, don’t be daft, you’re not safe!” An excellent book that kept me gripped to its pages for two tense days. Highly recommended.
What a great read. Very difficult to stop reading to make a meal, so very hungry. Worthy of five stars but I was expecting a twist at the end to give a further star but it didn’t materialise, nevertheless this is the cliched page turner. This is the fourth Adam Croft novel I have read and he is fast becoming a favourite, definitely more on the anvil for me.
Closer To You is a chilling and eloquent thriller that you willl find wanting to be closer to you and indeed have in your grasp. This is an enthralling, sinister psychological thriller about how someone can play mind games, whilst slowly entrapping the chosen victim.
The cover is perfect for this book. Almost poetic, with a sense of symmetry for what is to come within. The butterfly is used to great effect, almost poetic even, throughout the book.
Grace used to be like a butterfly. Life was going well, she was free and had spread her wings. She wanted love. She met Tom on a dating app. All seems innocent enough, after all, they both want their happy ever after. Tom, having been in a previous relationship, is ready for someone new.
This book, however is by Adam Croft and the front cover depicts a butterfly trapped in a jar. So, this isn't going to be like a full on romance. It is indeed an all-encompassing, all-powerful psychological journey. Tom is an intricate, complex character of all loveliness and I imagine him as being very attractive; but underneath all that, is something very different. He is like the jar and she, the butterfly, his butterfly. The butterfly is cleverly used in a few different ways, from the Grace's position in the relationship, to it being a nickname.
This writing is slick, and yet there is a certain eloquence about it. Adam Croft has cleverly weaved the intelligence and tenderness of the butterfly with the chilling, unsettling part of Tom and the calculated abuse that goes on.
There is a mix of the light, everyday lives of the characters with the calculating, darkness of Tom. This never jars, it always flows well as the days move onwards, always hooking and reeling in, like Tom is reeling in his chosen woman/victim. Although of course you are safer just reading, as nothing will happen to you, except the sense of gladness that you've read such an excellent book.
There is a shift when Grace starts to realise what could be happening. There are also very good twists and turns as an ex of Tom's makes contact via email. This encounter is timely placed and keeps the story moving on as more can be discovered about Tom. Then the story picks up even more intrigue as the search is on for Jess, where there are more unexpected twists and turns. Just when you think everything is over, the suspense and tension and events are ramped up again.
There is also an absolutely perfect ending to this psychological thriller.
Adam Croft's books, I have come to realise, never disappoint. You're always in for a really good page-turning read. Whether it is a thriller, psychological thriller or a police procedural, Adam seems to be able to cover it all with skill and aplomb.
This is a stand alone book by the very talented Adam Croft.
Grace is just putting her life back together after being jilted by Matt shortly before their wedding. Helping her friend Cath organise her wedding is reopening old wounds but Grace is determined to move on.
Tom is also looking for the perfect partner but he has very strict criteria his woman needs fit an image. Grace fits in every way.
Using a dating app Grace is filtering for possible partners when she connects with Tom. He seems perfect. Ticks a lot of the boxes so he goes into the possible box and she starts to find out more about him. He appears to be heaven sent. Could it be that Grace has found the perfect match and life from here on in will be happy ever after? If it looks too good to be true.......
So they message, they talk, they meet.... They are perfect together but then things start going wrong for Grace. She falls out with her parents, argues with her friend, commits professional misconduct at work.... Tom is there for her supporting, helping, advising....
Grace is very insecure, understandably after being so badly hurt, but she is a gentle, compassionate person who enjoyed a close relationship with family and friends and an honest relationship with her boss. She is, however, easily manipulated and that works to Tom's advantage.
Tom is the typical controlling male. Determined to mould Grace into the perfect girlfriend, grateful to him, dependant on him and alienated from everyone else she can replace his loss and he is determined to make that happen.
This was a very compelling read as I expect from Adam Croft and I really enjoyed it.
This is a quick, pacy and riveting 229 pages of intrigue, manipulation and deception. Grace thinks she has found Mr Right when she meets Tom via a dating app. He is charming, a gentleman and very attentive. He comes across as supportive and compassionate. Grace, it seems has been swept off her feet by him so why are her friends not quite so keen on him?
This is a fast-paced read that in some ways mirrors the pace of Grace and Tom’s relationship. Things move quickly and it isn’t long before he has moved in. Things should be rosy, and on the relationship side of things, that is the case. However, work, friends and family relationships all seem to have problems. Things are not going well, there are fraught conversations that seem to appear out of nowhere. Grace is so confused and is so glad that she has Tom there.
This is a clever and quick read that just zooms along and is easily read in one sitting. The author does a really good job of giving the reader a story that is very easy to get caught up in. There are doubts about Tom from the synopsis and also from the reactions and responses from Grace’s close friend and her family. Grace is slowly being manipulated and doesn’t realise until Tom’s attitude changes, subtle changes, but changes all the same.
If you like quick-paced, domestic thriller reads then Closer To You is a good book to pick up. The characters are good and I was able to see what the other characters could see, I could understand their frustrations and I could also see the doubt creep slowly in over Grace. For a quick read, this does pack a lot of drama and tension. thoroughly enjoyable read and one I would recommend.
I can see now why I am such a big fan of Adam Croft. Every offering of his is a work of amazing genius. Where he gets his ideas from is beyond me, but they are just so fascinating and this one was no exception. The story begins as a couple meet for the first time and start to get to know one another. He seems to be the perfect guy and she can see absolutely nothing to make her think otherwise. However, I think it’s fair to say that the reader is immediately suspicious. As the story continues, the relationship becomes more and more fragile and the tension starts to build – mainly because the reader has started to get an idea of what might be about to happen. Of course, the author always makes sure that the reader also accepts the fact that they could be wrong, as he weaves a plot so intricate that you really don’t know anything for sure. The ending is fast paced and frightening in places, building to a crescendo and then a very meaningful message about life in general.
I absolutely loved this book and found it a very quick read, mainly because I couldn’t put it down. One thing I do know for sure is that Adam Croft is a brilliant author and I will be eagerly awaiting his next offering.
This is one of the worst books I've ever read. I'd give it 1 star, but I did finish it and at least the author wrote with decent grammar and kept the pace moving along. But the plot was extremely predictable, and the characters were very thin. An emotional connection to the main character never happens, and her feelings are described in very superficial terms. The author is a man, and he clearly doesn't know how to describe a female's romantic experience. As a woman myself, and one who understands how a bad romance can occur, I just didn't care about this heroine. She comes across as very shallow, yet we're supposed to care about her. I just couldn't see her as a real person. The author seems to have written this book very quickly, and I have a feeling he was copying a best seller that I've seen the TV version of. Anyway, I won't buy another book by this guy. I think he's churning out bad books in an attempt to hit it big, but he's not very creative.
Closer to You is a real page turner by author Adam Croft who writes addictive and gripping psychological thrillers. This one taps into the online dating scene when Grace meets Tom on Tinder and their relationship moves on very quickly when he moves into her home. Others seem to spot that Grace is changing, becoming disconnected from her friends and struggling at work but Grace is happy and feels safe with Tom...but is she? This is a heart thumping read, suspenseful and intriguing as we watch Graces life start to unravel. I have to say that I was expecting a big twist and was a little disappointed when one didn’t appear but there were plenty of surprises along the way to keep me interested in where the plot was going and why Tom was acting the way he was. A little predictable but very realistic due to the well researched narrative.
What if your boyfriend wanted you dead? Grace needs to spend the rest of her life with Tom. Otherwise he'll kill her. He’s the perfect gentleman. He’s kind, attentive and caring. Her family love him. And he needs Grace dead. But why? As the feeling grows that Tom is not as perfect as he seems, he begins to slowly and systematically destroy her life. Can she discover the truth and escape with her life?
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuousluy. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
As the feeling grows that Tom is not as perfect as he seems, he begins to slowly and systematically destroy her life. Can she discover the truth and escape with her life?
I liked every page of this book. Gripping from start to finish. Grace met Tom who seemed a nice guy...was he, and wanted to look after her...did he? Things aren’t always the way they seem! This is Adam Croft’s best book so far, I think, and he’s written some really good ones, the majority of which have received 5* from me. This book is that, for definite!
What a whirl wind of a story I actually felt I was part of the storyline all characters and the plot where so real and something anyone of us could go through , this book is truly a roller coaster I looked down and I was already over half way through it , I had to stop reading because I was at work but as soon as I finIshed I read it until my eyes couldn’t read anymore ! Excellent! Didn’t want it to end ! Great read you will not be disappointed
I have read so many of Adam's books even though I still have a few to go, but I think that this is his best so far, if that is possible. So tense throughout that I wanted to scream at Grace to wake up. It's one of those books that you want to get to the end, but at the same time you don't. I absolutely loved it and it's a must read for everyone who like tense thrillers. Brilliantly written and very highly recommended. Thank you Adam.
If you're looking for a quick, non-challenging read this ticks the box. Written from 1st person perspective, Grace records about 6 months of her life, commencing with online dating and her journey through her developing relationship with a new man. Everything isn't as it first seems and the ending is no surprise. Only 3 stars, as although it's well written, it's fairly predictable and not really my usual genre. I much prefer the Knight and Culverhouse series.
Wow what another brilliant read Adam Croft! Thank you for sharing your brilliant mind and turning it into another fantastic book that keeps you on the edge of your seat and have to keep reading to get to the end. I highly recommend reading this book and all the other books you have written. Knight and Culverhouse is also another fantastic series. Thank you again Adam Croft
Good stand alone thriller from Adam Croft. Those used to his Crime Series, Knight & Culverhouse or Kempston Hardwick will find this very different. Partially written in the third person you get one view, the stalker, and then in the first person you get the view of being stalked. Quite eery and disturbing how you get involved in Tom and Grace's story and want to shout out a warning but can't .
Another page turner from Adam Croft, I’ve read 7 of his books now and every one is different. This one didn’t fail to disappoint. I started it 5 days ago and finished it already! I couldn’t put it down. It was absolutely brilliant, such a talented man. Can’t wait for further books from Adam, I’ve been there from his first release ‘Her last tomorrow’ Adam, your books got me hooked on thrillers! So thank you x
Sometimes when someone seems to good to be true beware. Grace has a job that makes her crazy. Is helping her friend plan a wedding getting no respect for all she’s doing. Her ex bolted on her before getting married. Finds a guy in a dating app that seems perfect. Interesting story but can’t say I’m happy with the ending. Will have to ponder it since I’ve just finished the book. For now it doesn’t sit well
Grace has walked down the aisle and stood next to Matt the person who she wants to spend the rest of her life with. She has just said I do and is waiting for Matt to do the same. That's doesn't happen. Matt leaves the church saying he can't go through with it. She thinks this is the worst thing that has ever happened to her until she meets Tom on an Internet dating site.
Another amazing book by Adam Croft.! From the first page I was gripped and didn't want to put it down. Just when I thought I knew what was coming next ...WRONG ! My heart was literally in palpitations as I was drawn into Graces life and wanted to scream at her Noòoo! Absolutely loved this book as always and can't wait for the next one . Thank you Adam Croft.
What more needs to be said than looking at the Authors name Adam Croft. If you want a good who done is read then you have to turn towards Adam. This book was a page-turner and I thought it was going so many other ways. A very good story that could happen to anyone. If you get this book I am sure you are going to enjoy it.
It was a decent story, nothing spectacular that I can explain further about it. I wish the storyline has more powerful or interesting side stories to back it up. The suspense is there, but I feel it's not sufficient enough to push the story to a higher or the highest level.
This book is scary. There are likely men out there like Tom; and as manipulative and smooth as silk as they are, they likely get away with murder and mayhem. A very good psychological thriller. I think my spider sense would have clued me to what Tom was doing, but I’m glad everything turned out okay.
Excellent character study of a mentally unstable stalker and his fragile victim. I've read a similar plot before but still did not figure out all the twists. A good read, highly recommend for psychological mystery.
Like reading his books they are interesting from page number one. I would highly recommend Adam Croft books to everyone who likes a quick read. Filled with suspense and keeps you thinking till the very end.
