For an Audience of One: Seek the Praise That Comes from God Alone

Rate this book
Seek honor and praise from God and not people.

This book will help you to stop being motivated by the approval of others and instead start living for the validation that comes from God alone. Respected author and theologian R. T. Kendall shares a profound revelation of the meaning of John 5:44, the scripture that has guided his life for more than sixty years. Early in his ministry the wise counsel of two mentors brought this scripture to light, and he has determined to live by it ever since. Now he passes on the same wise counsel to his readers.

In For an Audience of One, Kendall explores what it means to truly live for Christ alone. Many Christians believe in God and claim that Jesus is their Lord and Savior, but sadly their actions betray them. They are more concerned about the approval of people. They avoid truly following God's leading or taking a bold stand for righteousness if they fear they might lose a friend. Because they are more worried about what people think than what God thinks, they miss out on what God is doing.

It's time to learn what a life truly surrendered to God--and God alone--looks like. Readers can live the life He has purposed for them! They can stop being motivated by fear of others and addicted to their approval. For an Audience of One shows readers how to start living for the honor and praise that comes from God alone!

Kendall asks us what our life would be like if we lived for God's approval alone. How would we change our behavior? What if we were to speak and act as if Jesus were right in front of us, watching and hearing everything we did and said?

This book is a strong wake up call, encouraging us to live for God's glory alone. Kendall also writes about the ways God motivates us to live for Him alone, such as suffering and trials. Kendall shares his own experiences of painful rejection, driving him to seek God's approval alone. He also gives the example of Jesus' life.

Kendall says living life for the audience of One will lead to a life of wisdom and joy. We will be saved from regret later on.

Kendall includes examples of historic charismatic revivals, individuals seeking God alone and not the approval of man. Some of the stories were rather long and I felt lacked a personal impact.

This is a thought provoking book. Kendall is one of my favorite authors and this book is another one challenging us in how we live our lives. He goes to the motives of our actions and strongly encourages to put God's approval foremost. No discussion questions are included but this would make a good book for a group to read and discuss.

Food for thought: “The greatest joy in the world is the knowledge that God approves of us.” (64)

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Another challenging theological classic from RT Kendall

There is something about RTs writing, that resonates with that part of my soul, that thinks everything is 'honky dory' - when actually it needs God's light and growth. I commend this book to you - but beware - Kendall 'tells it like it is!'

The title of this book should help you to see what this book is about. Basically the idea is that we should live our lives for an audience of One. Everything we say, everything we do, everything we think - we should keep God in mind. He knows all. And He knows our motives. So even if we do the right thing, we might need to question “why” we are doing it. We should live for His glory alone, and not seek the glory of people… In a word, this book is outstanding. This book is now among my all-time favorites. I highly recommend it for all Christians. And really for anyone. This book will help believers and nonbelievers alike to think about their lives and their actions. One way to tell how valuable a book is, is to ask the question - Did this book change me for the better? If you can say yes, then the book is well worth the read. And this book most definitely falls into that category.

Very Good!

This book is a reminder that everything we say and do, even think, should be for an audience of One. There is so much wisdom in this book, as well as conviction, but in a good way to make us really think about why we say and do the things we say and do. Most importantly, why we seek to please God or to please man.

Motivating and Humbling

So much truth and inspiration. May the Holy Spirit enable me to live for an audience of One. R.T. Kendall is so authentic, openly acknowledging weakness and yet speaking in power. I plan to read many more of his books.

A great read

This thought provoking book is filled with spiritual nuggets. It has reached the deep recesses of my very being where I have found sin lurking. After much repentance I now find a lightness of my spirit like never before. Thank you Jesus.

Excellent

Rt Kendall has a way of bringing traditional Christian doctrines with a fresh and inspired touch. He brings us to God’s heart in the midst of an age of confusion and deception, and calls us to please God in all we do, and not be pleasers of people

Lately the Lord has been teaching me to live for an audience of one, which is to say to live for Him alone without getting distracted or tripped up by the attititudes, opinions, gossip, slander, or even praise from others--and I'm mainly speaking about fellow Christians. I've experienced a lot of that in my life and I had allowed it to pull my focus off Jesus. I don't believe it is coincidence I just happened to come across this book as the Spirit is training me to live for an audience of "One." I was already familar with R.T. Kendall but somehow managed to overlook this title until just recently. Perhaps this was intentional on the part of the Lord so that I would read it just as He is training me in this area. The lessons in the book correspond to what God is teaching me, and there are a number of things in its pages which gave me pause to reflect.

Thought provoking and challenging read by Kendall based on John 5 v 44 "How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?"
As the title suggests it's an encouragement to live life for an audience of one (God).
He has the ability being out Biblical insights and make them accessible. Lots of food for thought.

For an audiance of One is a wonderful book that reminds us to live solely to please God, to do everything for His glory and not for prestige.
The author explains the importance of integrity and character to stand firm in your calling.
This can be a great book for people called into ministry and everyone of us because our lives should represent Christ well.
