It’s a time of war and Mock’s land has been invaded, his people routed, killed or enslaved. Out for revenge, Mock and his band of brothers cut a swathe of destruction across the land.
Grinda is an innocent village girl who’s heard tell of the barbarians’ savagery. When they destroy her village and their monstrous leader kidnaps her, she expects the worst.
How wrong she is.
Two enemies. A land divided. A love that defies the odds.
Trigger Warning: graphic and violent. Some readers might find some scenes distressing.
I live a small, happy life with my partner and cuddly dogs. In between my writing and reading, I like to travel, paint, daydream, play the piano and work as little as possible..
I picked this up yesterday but was so intrigued by the plot and wanting to read another "barbarian" book after Golden Dynasty (I got to look into "Ravaged by the Barbarian Horde" as well) that I started reading it yesterday. That usually doesn't happen.
The beginning was so good, 4+ stars. The premise is quite interesting. Grida is a village girl, just living an endless drudgery of chores for her large family. One day the barbarians led by Mock attack. To save her family, Grida "sacrifices" herself and is taken prisoner by Mock. I was wondering how they were going to fall in love, especially since the first descriptions of Mock were not attractive, from his hot, sour breath to his attempted rape of her. I kept checking if this really was a romance LOL
The ending (or climax) was quite weird and confusing too. There was all this mysticism, with the Mother and their beliefs and some fantasy elements.
Stick with it. One review gave this advice and I’m so glad. Without this I would have quit.
Mock is awful, disgusting, brutal and the worst romantic leading man in history. You’ll wonder (even after just the first page) how you’re ever going to warm to this monster. The more time we spend with him the more we realise how unbelievably horrendous he is. He seemed irredeemable but...
As Grinda enters his life we slowly start to see another side to him. And once we discover the horrors of his past it’s hard to not warm to him.
Before long I was his biggest fan and wanting everything to work out.
This turned out to be an absorbing and addictive read. It’s straight onto the next book for me now.
3 stars I thought it was a good book. At first in the story I didn’t like mock, and I really thought that maybe I wasn’t going to be able to continue reading. I couldn’t believe that this guy was going to be the love interest but after everything and the character development I’m glad he is the love interest. Such a fun book to read and I’m impressed with the writing in this book
I'm torn on rating. It was grotesque, violences and r@pes. I must admit I struggled at first. Mock was a monster and even though he had his reasons. I found it so difficult to rationalize the things he did and then he met her. Grinda, she changed him and he risked all for her. The writing was so good it captive me and at the same time it wasn't a easy read. I was so angry, sad, disgusted, and then turn to hope, joy and happiness.
The title threw me off, at the beginning of the book when the barbarians attack the village, I assumed they were about capturing the mothers and thinking why talk about Glinda? When she, herself isn't a mother. Later, I realized it was about the earth as mother. (The mother's children book) bad choice it seem to dark and foreboding...
I didn't bother to read the reviews because it will interfere with making my decision to read this book or not. Sometimes reviewers low the rating when other liked it. I decided to give it a chance and read. I was disappointed but only at the less halfway through. Now I'm not disappoint and glad I read it. The writing were so good. But the only thing threw me off was the languages. It was modern language, and so for that I give 3.5 stars.
The transition of Mock nearly gave me whiplash. It made no sense to me how quickly he changed. I'm sure some people hated the violence and gave a low rating because of that. I didn't have a problem with the violence, and it was actually funny how graphic the gore was and yet the sex scenes are pretty tame, odd choice by the author in my opinion. My main issue is the writing in general; it's just not that good. The pacing of the whole story is weird and sort of rambles around and the author did a terrible job setting up this world. I can't tell if it's a fantasy world like Game of Thrones or just medieval times with a touch of mystic. I tried really hard to get through the whole thing, but around 75% I gave up .
DNF at 45% I love me a good anti hero, but this one went from being an actual barbarian with yellow teeth and blood chunks in his beard to kneeling next to the heroine apologizing for startling her, way to fast. And then a whole magical system was introduced within a couple of pages. Idk, there’s some other things I’d rather be reading at the moment.
Very well written! The story kept me interested all the way through. However, the timing of the main character's pregnancy really bugged me. It felt quite unrealistic that they would know she's pregnant 1 week after her rape.

honestly have to stick it out as it’s rocky in the beginning. mock is a really awful guy in the start but he turns it around. it was shocking to me thinking he was going to be love interest at first but then he started getting better and i’m glad it was him i guess
One of the first books of this type that I’ve read and to call it amazing is a complete understatement. Perfectly written and character development is amazing. I would give it 10 stars if I could!
It definitely had some tough moments, but Mock makes you like him despite his brutality and need for vengeance. I loved Mock and Grinda and how they fell in love. The earth connection and the tribal living, and the slavery definitely make you think of how indigenous peoples were treated by the colonizers. There is a little of the more unbelievable supernatural (when Mock was near death and what happened under the wark), but for the most part it’s very plausible as a story. You’ll feel scared, disgusted, sad, angry, and the love/spiciness is sweet. I’m most sad about Spirit. Only a few typos throughout this book.
Can’t wait for book 2 - I want Mock to have his own blood babies too!
