In this steamy third book in New York Times bestselling author Ruth Cardello’s Corisi Billionaires series, a trip to Italy could jump-start a lasting relationship—but only if all that’s hidden comes to light.
When Christof meets a beautiful mechanic on the side of the road, he knows they’re meant to be. His family, however, needs him and his mediation skills in Italy, where decades of secrets and betrayal could cost them everything. His mother is convinced a fiancée would help smooth things over. But he’d be nuts to ask a woman he just met to participate in such a farce.
Men always find something about McKenna they want to change—her independence, her success, the grease that clings to her after a satisfying day in the garage. So when she starts falling for a handsome billionaire, she doesn’t believe it will last. Their engagement is fake, but the sparks that fly when they’re together are too real to resist.
If Christof and McKenna trust themselves and each other, Italy will jump-start a love as intimate as it is intense. If not…their relationship isn’t the only one on the line.
Ruth Cardello hit the NYTs and USA Today for the first time back in 2012. Millions of sales are evidence that her books are akin to potato chips, addictive from the first one. She has created a multi-series billionaire world with a combination of escapism and realism that has gained her a faithful following of readers.
What Kindle Reviewers write about her:
"Wow hot at every page. Heart stoping, fear raging, mind blowing wonderful."
"I'm a true fan of Ms. Cardello. I ran on to her first book a few years back and have been hooked ever since. I could go on and on about the story like of this book, but I'm not. All of her books are total page turners, unique, heart wrenching, and I love them all. There isn't two alike in the bunch and I feel like i know the characters personally. I personally read 97 authors books. And I buy every book they put out. This author is in my top 10. Great job and keep them coming."
"Love this series. Got me to start reading again. I look forward to the next book. Thank you for giving me the love of reading back."
Ruth Cardello was born the youngest of 11 children in a small city in northern Rhode Island. She spent her young adult years moving as far away as she could from her large extended family. She lived in Boston, Paris, Orlando, New York--then came full circle and moved back to New England. She now happily lives one town over from the one she was born in. For her, family trumped the warmer weather and international scene.
She was an educator for 20 years, the last 11 as a kindergarten teacher. When her school district began cutting jobs, Ruth turned a serious eye toward her second love- writing and has never been happier. When she's not writing, you can find her chasing her children around her small farm or connecting with her readers online.

The Secret One is the third book in Ruth Cardello's Corisi Billionaires series and while it focuses on a new Romano brother the story is interwoven with the Corisi family secrets that are coming to light more and more with each book. I loved getting to know Christof and McKenna and I really liked that they had fate on their side bringing them back together after their first meeting 7 years prior. You could easily see the connection between them and and it was amazing to see how sweet Christof could be. It really drew me to his character as well as Mack's. She was a little skittish and unsure if she should put her trust in Christof but it was fun to see her work through that, especially with the help of her crew.
When I first started this series I wasn't sure how I felt about the Corisi involvement in the stories since so much was kept a secret and wasn't too prominent in the stories. But now with those secrets coming out it's getting really interesting and I'm so curious what else will happen from here.

We return to the Corisi Billionaires series, with book three; The Secret One giving us Christof Romano’s story.
"I might have forgotten meeting you, but you stayed with me…"
Our story starts ten-ish years previously with a very drunk Chris and a not-so-drunk McKenna, meeting in a bar, both are at a bit of a cross-roads, and the conversation they have moulds their future choices, even though initially only one of them remembers what transpired when they reconnect again by sheer luck a decade on. It doesn’t take the fog of over imbibing long to clear though when Christof and McKenna start getting to know each other again.
"I bet you already have everything you need."
"…I used to think so… Not anymore."
Although Ruth’s writing is never a struggle to read, I felt the romance between our leads in this one took second place to the familial drama that finally came to a head in relation to Dominic Corisi. Don’t get me wrong that isn’t a major complaint because the resolution of that story-line was actually what held my attention, mainly due to the sporadic time that McKenna and Christof actually spend alone, and of it that is actually given more than minimal page time. I’ve loved Dominic from my first meeting with him, so the extra time with him, Abby and Judy was great, so not all bad. And if you’ve read the previous books in this series and the Legacy series, you know that the man has dealt with some pretty heavy emotional blows in the last decade and from the way this one ended likely a few more in future books.
"Sometimes when I look at you I see… forever."
But as much as I loved Christof’s stalwart support of McKenna and his family, and his unfailing commitment to her, even when she acted like a tool, I didn’t feel any real spark between them, even the sex (what little of it there was) felt lacklustre and rushed. It didn’t help that I really didn’t warm to McKenna, talk about hot and cold, and although I understood her past was the reason for a lot of it, I just found it all got a bit old, when time and time again Christof proved to her he wasn’t going to add to her abandonment issues.
"I’d rather laugh and cry, love and lose… than feel nothing."
Not my favourite book by this author, but I love the Romano and Corisi families in general so it was good to spend more time in that universe. With the revelations in this one I feel there are a few more books likely to come as well now the families are reunited, especially as not all secrets have been fully disclosed, and those involved not aware as yet.
"The past is a story that has already been told…"

I must say I have read some of Ruth’s other novels and they focus on family but this one held so much more! It really showed the fractures and pain a family can cause especially when secrets are involved! It also showed how even when some family turns their backs some are still there to hold you up and help make you stronger even if it’s a family that you choose!
I also love a title that shows us what we are in for and “the secret one” could be anything! The secret of fake love, the secret of real love! Either way what that secret is you have to read to find out!
Though you do get some side info from other characters our main two are Christoff and McKenna! From their first interaction these two have a deeper understanding of the other and one night really changed it all for them!
I beautiful story with many amazing characters and I seriously want to go back and read about any other characters if there are books because that’s how intrigued this story made me!
The Secret One is a steamy contemporary romance with a billionaire hero and an independent heroine. I haven't read Ruth Cardello before but I already want more. This is book 3 in the Corisi Billionaires series and it can be read as a standalone.
The book starts off with readers meeting Christof as he is in his late teens. He is lost because he is dealing with the loss of his sister-in-law. When he is out with friends, he meets a girl named McKenna. He is drunk but even his beer goggles know that she is a beauty. They are both dealing with loss and grief and that one night is so impactful.
The story picks up years later. Christof is a billionaire working for his family and McKenna is working at her garage called Decker Park. When Christof has car problems, McKenna pulls over to help. They don't realize that they met years before but their chemistry is still there. Both are single and haven't been in a serious relationship in what feels like forever. But they can't help but feel attracted to one another.
Christof and McKenna begin talking on the phone and having virtual dates. Once they put it all together and realize that they met when they were younger, their feelings for one another begin to make sense. Yes, it is fast but they are meant for each other.
They want to take things slowly but that goes out the window when they agree to a fake engagement. Christof needs to visit Italy to handle some family business and his parents think the news of an engagement will make it easier to find peace. McKenna agrees which is shocking to both of them.
Their time in Italy makes their connection stronger and their love for one another grow with each minute they spend together. Falling in love wasn't part of the plan, but love does that for you.
I give The Secret One 5 stars. I am not always a fan of 'instant love' but Ruth wrote such a beautiful and believable romance. I couldn't put this book down as I was captivated by Christof and McKenna's beautiful connection. I loved every moment of their love story and I can't wait to read more from Ruth Cardello. If you like a romance with passion, wit, and drama, then you need to read this book.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This may be the third in this series, but it links to a number of other books in this wonderful collection of books by the talented Ruth Cardello. I would definitely recommend that you read back as far as you can to get the full story, but certainly the earlier books in the series.
The story brings together two family lines and finally gives up some secrets and rights some wrongs - but actually the biggest secret to an extent remains exactly that even at the end … so I am intrigued as to how and when that will be part of the series.
Christof is such a totally good guy. We first get to see him as a young college kid drinking far too much and needing his Dad to come and help him get home, and him admitting to the meeting he had with Mack, a beautiful young woman. He even names his car after her. But it is seven years before fate brings them together again, and as they say the rest is history … although the events which lead to them cementing the deal are anything if ordinary.
As the two of them pull off the reconciliation of the century, reuniting the Corisi / Romano houses in deepest Italy, we really see the connection between them. And as Christof helps his family heal, McKenna also lays to rest some of her demons too.
SO much more for you to enjoy reading, but I refuse to reveal more!
The Secret One (Corisi Billionaires #3) by Ruth Cardello 4.5 stars M/F Romance I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
Christof and McKenna meet in a bar when they are both in need of a good ear to listen. What they couldn't know is that fate is funny and she wasn't finished with them. I absolutely loved how they met and felt that it truly added a bit of whimsy to the story.
Christof is a Corisi. He is starting to take more responsibility from his brothers and really engage in the family business. When he finds himself on the side of the road, the last thing he expects is to meet a beautiful woman who knows more about his car than he does. There's something about her that he can't quite place, but he knows that he's meant to see her again.
McKenna is used to knowing more about cars than almost anyone. It's made her wary of men because they normally don't like that aspect of her. But, when she sees a beautiful car, along with a beautiful man, she can't help but stop to make sure everything is OK. She loves her life and knows that she might not have taken the steps to finding her dream without the push of a handsome stranger.
When McKenna and Christof meet again, they find their connection hasn't really diminished. What begins as a fake engagement, blossoms in to a family affair that neither can really control.
When you first begin this series, you don't know very much about the Corisi family. They are a hard family to know with so many secrets. But, as the series progresses, their secrets become unraveled and you're left hoping that these two families can find a way to co-exist.
I loved McKenna and Christof's story because it was full of secrets, romance and fun. I'm not sure if I would categorize this as an insta-love story, but their connection was so strong when they first met, that maybe others will think of it like that. I can't wait to see if there will be more about this family.
Seven years ago Christof and McKenna met in a bar - both coming to terms with the loss of special people in their lives. Sharing wisdom and hope as well as a kiss they went their separate ways. Fast forward to the present day and they have each made a name for themselves in their own way. However, they are both still missing that one person in their life.
A chance breakdown on the side of the road sees them meeting again, not that either one of them realises at the time. After swapping numbers, purely for car issue reasons, they start messaging and having phone call dates. That is until Christof's family need him to sort out a problem from the past and head to Italy. His mum wants him to take McKenna as his fake-fiancée but he can't ask that of her - can he?
The underlying storyline that has been running through the Corisi Billionaires series now comes to light and it is down to Christof to help smooth things over between the families. McKenna lends a helping hand but it's just an arrangement - right?
I love this series and this book may just be my favorite! McKenna is one of the best heroines I’ve read, and Christof made me swoon. I loved how they met...and met again. I loved the romance, the love, the families, and yeah, I just LOVED this book!
Christof is a man whose life revolves around his family and the family business. When he finds himself stranded on the side of the road, he never expected that the person who would come to his aid would be the woman he met years earlier and has never forgotten.
McKenna inherited her love of cars from her father and her knowledge and skill is unparalleled. When she sees that Christof is having car trouble, she stops to lend a hand but she never expected that he would be the same man who changed the course of her life when she needed someone the most.
The feelings they had for each other are stronger than ever so when Christof needs a fake fiancé to alleviate a family situation in Italy he hopes that by convincing McKenna to pretend to be his fiancé that with time he will also be able to convince her to make it real.
The support that Christof and McKenna show each other whether it comes to family or their careers shows how perfect they are for each other. There is also a great cast of secondary characters on both sides and revelations from the past that draw you into this family and this series even more.
I was looking forward to this third book in the series and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a fake engagement story?
There are many things I liked about this one, from the characters and the fact they come from different worlds, a more unusual job for our heroine, chemistry and great banter and Italy, one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
While hyped up about everything, many parts of the story just felt flat or not exactly what I was expecting. I mean, rich family, Inheritance and many hidden secrets, all the drama and danger that comes with it, everything altogether, unfortunately, didn’t add up for my expectations, it just felt like a very steamy and tame love story.
I recommend it for romance lovers of nice and quick reads.
I have enjoyed many of Ruth Cardello’s books and loved this one too. She writes individual stories, but families coming together are always the theme, and if you read enough of her books, the characters from different books manage their way into the storylines. Christoff and McKenna were the couple in this book. Chris came from a loving home, very close to one another, and very secure in their knowledge as such. McKenna had a single, race car dad with a mother who had disappeared long ago. As an adult, McKenna is still very wary of “family”, not really understanding the concept. The journey this couple takes in helping Christoff mend family riffs in Italy and enjoying all that their little town there gave them, made this a great romantic feel. I found this to be another of the author’s wonderful storytelling and am so glad I am able to read and review this.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
3.5 Stars rounded up to 4
This was a good book, but as I had not read books 1&2, I was a little lost.
The characters were very well written. I loved the backstory of McKenna and Christof, and the way they reconnected years later.
Christof knows that there is something special about Mack, even if can't clearly remember their first meeting. After a few dates, he knows that Mack is the one person he can see spending the rest of his life with. That's why this crazy plan of his mother's to ask Mack to go to Italy as his fiancee' is a really bad idea. Christof doesn't want to drag Mack into his family's problems, especially with Dominic Corsi trying to ruin his family in Italy.
McKenna knows that agreeing to go with Christof to Italy is going to be risky for her heart, but she needs to expand her horizons to know for sure if she can be the person that Christof needs.
This book had a few up and down moments for me, but over all it's a good read.
In the beginning of the book you meet Christof as he is in his late teens. He is lost because he is dealing with the loss of his sister-in-law. When he is out with friends, he meets a girl named McKenna. He is drunk but even his beer goggles know that she is a beauty. They are both dealing with loss and grief and that one night is so impactful Christof and McKenna had fate on their side bringing them back together after their first meeting 7 years prior. You could easily see the connection between them and it was amazing to see how sweet Christof could be. When Christof has car problems McKenna pulls over to help him. Both are single and haven't been in a serious relationship in what feels like forever. But they can't help but feel attracted to one another. Their time in Italy makes their connection stronger and their love for one another grow with each minute they spend together. Falling in love wasn't part of the plan, but love does that for you.
I got this book from Netgalley for my honest review.
I read this book, not knowing it was the three in the series with even more before this series as a spin off. Do I think you need to read the other book first, no. The author does a great job of filling you in enough that you understand what is going on, while also making you fall in love with the whole family, I am going to go back and read the whole series. Now, on to this book. Oh my, what a wonderful met cute the main characters of Christof and McKenna have. This book isn't really a second chance as much as a fate/ destiny kind of story. I fully enjoyed the roller coaster and the family drama/ situations rolled into their overall romance.
Priceless!! I think this is my most favorite story in this whole series. It has family intrigue, secrets, a beautiful romance and an awesome HEA!! I fell in love with McKenna right from the start and Christof I’m in love with. LOL!! Truly this is an amazing story of family and how with love you can get through anything even the surprises, good or bad. This story gave me all the feels you want when reading a romance. This is a story you won’t be able to put down once you start it or at least I couldn’t.
This is a great story if you are a fan of Ruth Cardello and have followed her since her first series. If you haven't, but you love an easy romance with a bit of mystery, you will still enjoy this... but you'd probably enjoy it more if you go back and read the Maid for a Billionaire series first. That said, I fell in love with McKenna and Christof from the beginning and found their chemistry easy and believable. These two have a lot more than a sexual connection though, they truly connect and it's easy to believe their relationship will withstand the long-haul and whatever else the Corisi Billionaire Series throws at this family in the stories to come.
Obsessed with this series! As the books continue I get more invested in this series – and with everything coming to a head in this book I was so anxious to see how it all ended up! In a story of fate, Christof meets McKenna while in college during a moment of weakness for both of them – Christof dealing with the death of his sister-in-law and McKenna the death of her father. A pivotal conversation for both of them, they part ways and don’t exchange contact information. Years later McKenna has followed her dreams based on that conversation, and Christof is doing everything he can to please his family. When they end up meeting again on the side of the road and realize they recognize each other, they take it as a second chance to explore what could have been so many years ago. I loved their story – between McKenna afraid to let anyone into her close bubble and Christof speaking up for himself and going after what he truly wants in life versus the family business – it was a great read! In addition, wrapping up the story of Judy and how the series had begun where this family was able to resolve some of their issues was the best ending! I can’t wait to see if this series will continue! I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Absolutely amazing. I love Ruth Cardellos book as they give such a wonderful feeling of family. There is so much love, friendship, respect and heart in this book. Christof and McKenna are beautiful together. I love how Christof is so sure of his love, so secure in himself to be who he is and to give McKenna the space and love she deserves while also allowing to see the love and family she already has. They were amazing together. The amazing family plot twists kept me hanging on, the way the discovery was dealt with and how so much thought and love was put into how to approach it, with zero resentment. Such an amazingly strong family. Seeing Dominic finally get his family he so desperately wanted was moving too, the bonds of the past are broken and put to bed. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this family.
I can’t say enough about this book from Ruth. Her characters are believable and the romance and love that began from the beginning was swoon worthy. McKenna is a go-getter, needing only a little nudge from a stranger, her dream became reality. She had even made an impression on the stranger, Christof and seven years later their paths crossed again. It was destiny. Their story was fun, romantic with lots of spice and family pulling things together for their happily ever after. Ruth even brought back some old friends from her other series. Together they discovered and solved secrets that could change some of their lives and even bring them closer together. The Secret One was a book that you can’t put down once you start reading.
This is another steamy story in the Corisi Billionaire series. This is the love story of Christof and McKenna. The chance meeting on the side of the road, McKenna a beautiful mechanic stops to offer him help. They begin a slow moving relationship, until his family gets involved. Christof is needed in Italy to address family issues, his mom thinks if he had a fiancé it would help the situation. Christof is not a fan of his moms plan but does mention it to McKenna. She is up for the adventure and to see Italy with Christof. But McKenna is not prepared for how much her heart will be involved. Will Mckenna and Christof’s fake engagement survive Italy? Will Christof be able to be the voice of reason in Italy to solve the family problems?
I enjoyed this story. A chance meeting between two people can inspire each other to reach for their dreams. Thank you Netgalley for the complimentary copy. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
Christof and McKenna are meant to be but there are many twists and turns that have to happen before they come together for their happy ever after. The Secret One is much more than just a falling in love of our hero and heroine romance. The Corisi family has suffered much pain, loss and hurt and McKenna has had her own share of pain. There are family secrets that are exposed that can tear the Corisi family apart or unite it, as it should have been years ago.
I have to be careful where I read a Ruth Cardello book because at any moment I can burst into tears or laugh out loud so hard I can’t control my volume. Her stories are such a mixture of tears, laughs and whatever else she deems to throw into the mix. There is such love between her characters, not only regarding the journey of the hero and heroine falling in love but the closeness between every family member and anyone else who might come along. These people are there for each other no matter what the circumstances. This author writes beautiful stories surrounding family love, loyalty and strength as well as such joy and plenty of laughter as well as telling it like it is – no holds barred. There is such depth to this plot with so many ups and downs and a few twists the reader may have to pause just to catch their breath before continuing. The Secret One is such a lovely story of second chances not only for our H and H but also for several other characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey to Christof and McKenna’s happy every after as well as getting a glimpse of my favorite Ruth Cardello’s character, Dominic Corisi!
Although this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. It's about fate and a second chance. Two strangers meet in a bar for a short encounter and seven years later they cross paths again.
Christof is one of the four Cordello brothers. Together, they run the family business. Christof hasn't met the "one" yet.
McKenna aka Mack has finally realised her dream with the help of her friends. The only family that she has. Due to past experience, she won't allow any man to try and change her and she likes and independence.
When Christof and Mack meet again after all this time, there is an instant connection, but they fail to understand why. They keep in touch and just when they are starting to get to know each other, there is a family emergency that Christof has to attend to. His parents are desperate and they make a suggestion which might make his mission a little easier. Considering that they are just getting started, will Mack go along with the suggestion?
Christof is the kind and thoughtful person who puts family above all else. He has a way with people and tackles the challenge with common sense and compassion. Mack is insecure, but she plays a big part in the accomplishment of the family reunion. There are all kinds of unexpected family secrets which are artfully unravelled. The romance is casual to begin with, but once they realise that it means so much more, it's rather beautiful. I like the tight family ethics and how they achieve the problem solving. A very pleasant read.
I have enjoyed every book in this series but this one, especially, was one of my favorites because it really helps to answer the question of why a character from a prior series, Dominic, is constantly in the books of this series. The romance aspects of this book follows Christof, the peacemaker of the family and McKenna, a smart and strong female character. They met years ago when Christof was drunk because he was sad about how his brother Sebastian was handling his wife's death. They had a connection then but didn't exchange information to keep in contact. Years later, they meet when McKenna, who is a race-car mechanic and owner of a racing track (I might be simplifying her actual success but it's awesome to see a woman who is as successful as her), stops to help Christof with his car, which broke down. They realize afterwards that they met before and sparks fly.
One Dominic's role is clear, Christof is sent to help smooth things over and they go to Italy together (She's helping him). There are surprises, there are secrets uncovered and overall, it was well done novel that really emphasizes the importance of family. Thanks to NetGalley for the early read and I look forward to revisiting this book through the audiobook.
This family is so wonderfully complex and beautiful. I love all of the different dynamics between everyone and learning more as we go along. Christof and McKenna had a brief meeting when they were young, yet it was significant and stayed with them. I loved the connection these two shared. It was like they picked up right where they left off, all those years ago. Mack was feisty, independent and strong enough to handle Chris’ crazy family. Chris played the mediator role, which he did very well. I really liked how steadfast he was when it came to his family. He loved them fiercely & unapologetically. This family continues to uncover secrets and go through so many emotional moments, but the love they have for one another is strong enough to see them through it all. I look forward to the next exciting chapter.
Omg I am so glad I got to read this book. I loved McKenna and Christof together. From the very first page i was completely hooked. McKenna has a whole lot of issues from past relationships, that much is clear. Her first meeting with Christof helped get her over the funk she was in when she met him. She became successful but also developed trust issues along the way. The Romano family certainly has a lot of secret and I am so excited that I got to along for the ride. Christof is certainly my favourite Romano brother. I just love everything about him. It would have been really disappointing if his book wasn’t as good as the others. I love Ruth Cardello, I love her books and I certainly loved The secret one.
Loved this! The Romano brothers are simply the sexiest, sweetest guys and I love reading about their close family ties and love for mama and nonna!
McKenna and Christof are amazing together. They hit it off while commiserating in a bar in college and fate brings them back together in the sweetest ways. I love that these two don't instantly remember one another, but instantly are attracted to one another.
The depth of this story is much more than the attraction between McKenna and Christof are delves further into the Corisi mystery. I highly recommend the Legacy series- especially book 1 Dominic Corisi's story simply because it will bring the entire story together. I love the weaving Cardello has done with these two series and cannot wait to see what she gives us with Gian's story.
This story is fun, fast (hehe- read to see why) and fantastic. Thanks NetGalley and Montlake for this ARC.
The Secret One was such a beautiful love story by Ruth Cardello. Christof falls fast for the beautifully independent McKenna. McKenna is captivated with Christof. Can a fake engagement turn real. Grab this book and follow along to find out what happens between these two.
I really loved this book. Cristof and McKenna were great characters and I loved the story. I've always wanted to go to Italy and this book is like a dream. Ruth has done a great job with this book and its just as great as the previous ones.
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 3 in the series, Corisi Billionaires, which I haven’t read yet…. but after reading this book, The Secret One, I plan to go back and read the first two. The author gives you enough of the backstories so you can read this as a stand-alone. But the story is so well written that you’ll want to experience the other stories just to savor the writing. This book tells the story of Christof and McKenna, who’s chance meeting when they were still teenagers, has a profound affect on their lives. Take a chance, and read this. You’ll not want to put it down until you finish it. I was given an ARC by NetGallery to read and give my honest opinion. I plan on purchasing this book, and the others in the series.
