It is commendable on the part of NCERT to introduce both the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution to Class 9 students and not shy away from talking about the ills and evils of Hitler's NAZI Germany in this textbook for History.
The authors of this book, in an attempt to make this complex text readable, instead of plain story-telling, have introduced lots of illustrations, photographs and anecdotes. But sadly, instead of improving the readability, I felt the information to be too scattered and all over the place, and I am afraid a student of Class 9 could feel lost.
The UPSC aspirants could use this book as reference, but they are not the primary students for this book, are they?
The later 2 chapters are Meh!

I really wish that we had the fortitude as a nation to look at history more honestly and to abandon some of the propagandist instinct. It is a disservice to the intellect of the students who deserve a more nuanced view of our history and the world.

The first three chapters are a must-read as they give a very wide range of details about major events that changed the world completely.

One of my favorite NCERT books so far. With its lucid writing, favorable font, relevant anecdotes, case studies, images, and political symbols, this book provides a general overview of both national and world history in an understandable manner.

The first three chapters are mind-blowing; they are absolutely necessary to form a solid opinion on French, Russian, and German history and how they shaped and contributed to the modern world. The authors have definitely tried to represent the complexity of the past in simple words for ninth graders, and it's commendable, but. It fails to think from a student's perspective and the average scholarly grasping ability, especially in a subject as complex as history.

The first chapter, The French Revolution, is easy, but has plenty of words in French that cannot be understood directly. I love that there are translations of the words while still keeping in touch with the original French. The slave trade and women's movement units are not very well focused on by educators; I wish that they were, because they're actually so interesting. The French Revolution contains plenty of historical figures—so many that it's hard to keep up. The lucid writing makes it fairly easy to comprehend, but some tidbits here and there get lost in memory, which proves to be very unhelpful.

In the second chapter, Socialism in Europe and the Russian Revolution, the February Revolution's context is scattered all over the place, and it's difficult for the student to understand. The October Revolution is relatively easy, but the chronology of the entire Russian Revolution in the Russian Empire is difficult to comprehend and formulate in the mind. Most students require guides and mind maps for this very chapter because of its complex chronology, absolute tapestry of Russian progressions, and layered Russian ideologies and societal factors during the Revolution. It is fun to learn and stressful to be tested on because of the immense factual knowledge provided in this chapter.

Nazism and the Rise of Hitler is by far the popular favorite amongst the impressionable minds of ninth grade, where we learn about the political structure of pre-Nazi Germany, the establishment of the Third Reich, and the Holocaust. Once again, the Holocaust is not focused on by educators at all, so I'd recommend watching an Auschwitz concentration camp tour on YouTube to sympathize with the Holocaust survivors more and to help with immersion. This is my favorite as well, because, compared to the last two chapters, this is the easiest to grasp and most interesting to learn. It's a dystopian society of the past, of course.

The 4th chapter was not counted in our school's curriculum; we made a project on an Indian tribe instead.

The 5th chapter does not begin to compare to the World History section. Of course, if you were to compare Hitler to a pastoralist, the pastoralist would be better morally and ethically. But to learn about it, you would have to pick Hitler. Pastoralists in the Modern World gives us a peek into the nomadic patterns of the Northern and Southern Indian pastoralists, their ways of living, their personal economies, and how they were affected by colonization. Later on in the chapter, we focus on the African tribe of the Maasais, which is a relatively short concept and easy to understand. This chapter is easy, just hard to immerse yourself in.

All in all, it's a great book. I would just like the wording of certain chapters to change into more understandable text for future ninth graders.

Probably the best academic book I’ve ever read. I absolutely loved it when I was in 9th standard.

I used to hate history as a subject, but this book made me realize how interesting reading history can be.

Today I decided to give it another try after 10 years, and I still enjoyed it. The simple and lucid language, paintings, pictures, and other small random details in the side columns are fun to look at. 5/5 imo.
