This book is one in a long line of bend-wagon jumping litRPG novels which have been published in the last 12 month. These novels try to sell on a niche market, targeting a select audience, but are very poorly executed.

As a fantasy novel, without the litRPG elements, the book would not sell a single copy when competing against "normal" fantasy works, especially in high-fantasy settings. In direct comparison the characters are flat, hardly more than 2D stick figures who just exist for the purpose of the story. They have no depth to them and the world build "around" them, is equally unimportant. Everything developes with the story and made to fit the story. There is no actual world the characters have a place in, there is no actual world outside this little snippet for story background purposes, there is no actual world and society that has any meaning. It is just a simple "revenge story" with an overpowered protagonist who helps his grand daughter (50 times removed or so) to get equally overpowered without any actual investment into training, growth or progress.

Now we combine that with the litRPG genre and we get a novel that not only is a boring fantasy story. No, it also manages to butcher the litRPG elements in equally ignorant fashion. The idea behind litRPG is to place a novel in a literal Role-playing Game environment. Now we have a number of prestigious RPG rulesets an author could take inspiration from, D&D and it's derivative Pathfinder only being two examples, which have been developed and refined over decades, had background stories about their gods and notable character written and are rich with lore AND a corresponding rulesets, which enables players to literally play in these worlds. Be it in a Pen & Paper group at home with friends or in one of the many computer games released over the past decades. The author decided to just "make up his own RPG system" and he manages to butcher it in every aspect. The levels attributed to people and monsters in the story are absolutely meaningless. The protagonist is a level 1 entity and only by right of his "pre game system powers" is he now able to slay absolute everything and while doing so develop such monstrous new abilities in necromancy that he can raise undead, which simply exterminate the best the local human adventurers can throw against him. He does not work for it, as any other character in a RPG world would have to, he just gets it for free. And not only does he get powers which are related to his "previous demigod self", he gets freebies left and right.

The litRPG elements are meaningless and only serve as a crutch for story telling. Combining this inability to come up with a proper litRPG system that is consistent and makes sense, with the inability to come up with a proper fantasy story and we get this uninspired hack of a book that only sells because the author targets a select audience.

The quality of the story is appalling and even the most hardcore litRPG fan should stay far away.

Overall it was pretty fun and an enjoyable read. For the nitpicks, it's full of anachronistic speech (e.g. they sound like 21st C people) but that makes it fairly internally consistent and easy to read.

I like a good you-fucked-with-the-wrong-guy anti-hero as much as the next person, but I don't enjoy it when they go "full-evil" and I fear that may be where this is headed. It can go either way as of the conclusion of this book but I would prefer it stays on the side of "pragmatic" and not gratuitous and cruel. I'll try the next book (assuming there will be one, but it seems likely) and decide from there.

Pleasantly Surprised

This is the first book I have read from this author and I can honestly say I will be looking into some of his other works. I felt the characters were believable and had a lot more depth to them than you would expect. I think the backstory behind all this is intriguing and interesting and it’s taking. There are parts of the book that I feel swayed this. There are certain elements that, if it had not been included, would have made this more of a PG-13 sort of book. The rest of the elements that make this more lean toward an R Is not language or anything like that and it almost lies invisible unless you’re paying attention. But the story is intriguing and keeps your attention. I am hoping that he will come out with the second installment in the series soon so I can read it.

Book one

Mistakes: While I found it well written and well edited, I also found it to be really short. Ending at 88%. There is a preview of book two though.

Plot: After a man spends his life trying to unite the different races he is betrayed and murdered. Now back as a Lich he will have his revenge, even if the world has to burn.

Characters: Some good proper villains. Leveling is way to easy.

An excellent first draft

Well conceived but poorly executed, this novel reads like a decent first draft. His punctuation is bad, he uses words inappropriately, words are outright missing and the character voices are inconsistent. No threat or sense of challenge to the characters anywhere in the book, there is never once a risk of the main characters being defeated.

Great book

This is one of the best action fantasy, horror stories I have ever read. The characters and plot are very unique in a new rendition of an age old story.I very much enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. This book is the first book I have read by this author, and I can't wait to hear more books by him.

A very enjoying story

I really got into this book almost the moment I started reading. It's not ground breaking or perfect or anything out of ordinary for most people but it was exactly the type of book I loved. Overpowered mf wanting to ruin the world on step at a time. Just enjoyable

An excellent read

This book it well written an edited, with a great protagonist and compelling story. I love to see the anti-hero as the mc, and laughed every time he complained about how the world changes are holding his power back. If recommend this book to fans of anti-heros and fantasy.

This was a fun read, mage kink is betrayed, killed then comes back to life years later and the world now operates on game rules. His power-ups over time just slowly return him to what he was. First book in a series, hope there are more because the final battle sounds like it will be awesome. Burned through the book in a day, had a hard time putting it down.

Satisfyingly dark, and still quite humorous.

Whether good or evil this book has what I have come to expect from the author, great characters. With an alternate world view, unmatched knowledge, loose morals and strong ethics, the main character is just awesome! I can not wait to read more.

Classic and basic litrpg.

Unlike usual stories, the MC starts overpowered. It's just that he got killed, slept for years, and lich his way back to life. The part with litrpg is basically bolted on a standard power fantasy. The secondary heroine might develop into an interesting character, with some effort.

Fun read

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was interesting with enough lore and backstory to keep me interested and wanting to read the next book but not so much that it was overwhelming. I highly recommend it.

I liked it.. Quite alot

I had just finished the latest Dungeon Robotics and my kindle suggested this as a next read. From the cover and synopsis I didn't even think it was LitRPG. But it sounded interesting and so I gave it a shot. So so so so so glad I did. It is LitRPG and Mr. Peed did a marvelous job creating this world, and its system. I look forward to many many more.

Awesome story

This was a fun story about a king wronged by a close advisor. It takes a few pages to get up to speed and the POV shifting takes a bit to get used to, but one it gets moving, it is quite a good tale.

Nothing like a good revenge story.

I didn't mind the two POVs the story had, but then it waited until we were three fourths of the way through to introduce another POV. I hope book two won't be filled with countless POVs.

All Hail Ainz Owl Gown !

Basically take the Overpowered Lich King from Overlord Ainz Owl Gown and send him to another world. But without access to all his spells, due to a level-up system. All in all a fun read. Can’t wait for the Sorcerer King to get enter Hell.

Do not waste your time! Even if the story was interesting (spoiler: it's not) the fact that it is awkwardly written, has confusing situations, and shallow and inconsistent characters makes this a poor read at best.

Fun

The betrayed lich is out to set things right with the world as only a bad guy can. Humor is everywhere. A fun fast read that disrespects the System. Enjoy.

Really different

It’s a very good mix of writing styles and content as far as magic and myth . The MC is a little bent but it just works.
