One of the weirdest things I have ever read. A human sex worker for demons. Light hearted, multiple pairings, sex and humour. Favourite character was Mal.

I loved the characters - although it's a short book they were well developed and the demons were delightful (unlikely though that should be) and I'd love to read more about Danny and his demon friends ;). It made me laugh out loud at some points: Danny allows one demon to take over his body for a day and this happened...'The demon’s first act as his body’s temporary manager was to scream, strip off all his clothes, and run off down the street flailing wildly. “Okay,” said Danny half an hour later, when he’d finally managed to calm his companion down and retrieved his boxers. “So what, exactly, happened there?”'. Such a fun book

Another gem from this author. I am binging through their stories. Dont know why they are fixated on demons and that too lovable ginormous demons. Above all love the humor and the 'fuck all ' attitude of our hero Danny.
And the cover is gorgeous!!

Recommended. Do read and have a laugh!

Light, sexy, read with a fun trans protagonist. The dialogue was, as usual, clever and fun to read, the idea of a kinky magician/sorceror using aaaall manner of methods to "convince" annoyed and annoying beasties to shuffle off and stop bothering people is ALSO fun. If there was anything I wished this book did more, it was craft more of an overarching plot and give a bit more background. A few more scenes would have rounded out the plot threads more solidly. Showing some more of Danny's interactions with the ancient order, or more interactions with Mal at different points in their relationship, for instance, would have lent some more emotional heft to the subsequent plot points. As it was, we were rather quickly told how he felt about these folks, and how they felt about him, rather than shown, which limited the emotional involvement I could have. It was really less of a novel/novella and more a collection of loosely linked short stories, which is fine, if that's what you go in expecting.

(3,5 stars) I'm new to this author but since reading To Hell and Back only a few days ago I knew I wanted to read more of their books. I expected Danny Diamond might be written in the same vain, funny story about a human crushing on a demon, but the tone of the story was a bit more serious than To Hell and Back.

Danny Diamond is not your ordinary human, he is a magician and an exorcist trading sexual favors in order to make demons do his bidding and he's also Danny might be tough and practical but life doesn't go easy on him. He doesn't see eye to eye with his fellow members of The British Society of Exorcists and demons don't have any concept of what a human body can endure so they tend to go a bit hard on him. The only bright spot in Danny's life, beside his cat, is Malastair, Fourteenth High King of That Dark World, who Danny occasionally summons to his bedroom.

This was a bit darker than I expected as I found it somewhat difficult to read about Danny's encounters with various demons. Danny stated a couple of times that he likes having sex with demons and he obviously enjoys his sex with a more than healthy dose of pain but reading about the state of his body in the aftermath wasn't something I found easy. Still it was obvious that Danny felt more comfortable in the company of demons than in the company of humans and really who could blame him as demons certainly seemed more open minded, easier to understand and accepted Danny for who he really was.

One thing I really enjoyed, once again, was an alternative view on demons and humanity as a whole.

Here was the thing most people didn't get about demons - and it was understandable, given that most people only ever encountered them via Christian propaganda and never got the chance to speak to one face-to-face: they weren't evil. They were just old. Like, really old. Ridiculously old.
...

They also didn’t get humans. Why should they? Demons had travelled across galaxies; seen stars being born; seen a million different species rise and fall. Human lives were, compared to theirs, utterly inconsequential. You couldn’t call that evil, not unless you thought the average human was morally obligated to treat every mosquito she encountered with care and compassion.

There were a couple of more even better examples but I kind of don't want to ruin it sharing the best quotes from the story. And maybe in essence those views are not particularly groundbreaking or unique but I still found them though provoking and for me they were probably the highlight of the story with no offence to Danny who was quite remarkable all in all.

Themes: single POV, , demons, sex work, bloodplay

3.5/5

Fun read with Danny Diamond, transexual, exorcist, sex worker, and magician. He does it all and takes it all.

Tags: Kink: a little bit of blood play, not much but I figured I'd tag it

Quotes:

Merryfeathers popped in with some juicy goss about the ghost of a dinosaur haunting a disused mineshaft in Yorkshire.

“The poor thing hasn’t attacked anyone but it does seem rather confused.”

“I’ll look into it.”

Coaxing a stegosaur out of a mine wasn’t, it turned out, the hard part. Convincing it not to follow him home took the whole weekend, during which time he picked up several new clients in Leeds, scoring a tasty three hundred pounds.

Another case of I-don't-know-what-the-other-reviewers-read. DNF at 31.7%. It might become romance at some point, but so far it hasn't been any genre at all. Not romance. Not erotica. Not funny, witty, sexy or interesting, despite the painful effort at originality. There's zero world building. The plot so far was a series of random gory sex scenes with demons. The hero was not likeable (how could he be? he did not get a proper background or real characterization). A demon could eat him at this point and I'd just shrug my head and move on to the next book, so I've decided to do it anyway.
I've loved other books by T.J. Land - most notably the villainous love story series - but this one was a mess. I wonder who edited it, if it was edited at all.

This was such a fun, brilliant, refreshing world. Danny takes care of demon problems through sex work. The demons are such personalities and the ride is wild. And there's even an actual romance here. Danny is such a masochist though, it goes a bit too far from my personal tastes.
