Killer Rain

Rate this book
NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WEATHER KILLS!

Hard drinking, super partier, lady’s man, Dan the Weatherman sees a woman flatten like an empty Halloween costume. A puddle of rain runs away from the scene of the crime. In a nervous-breakdown moment, Dan screams out on live TV that the planet is fighting back by murdering people with deadly rain. The network fires Dan, and he drowns his troubles in alcohol. When he staggers from a bar, lightning strikes him, but a copper plate in his head acts as a weather vane. Dan realizes that he is a human lightning rod, and it’s up to him to solve the mystery of the rain murders.

The government’s cheap solution to global warming is free medical marijuana for everyone, so no help there. College-dropout Dan puts together a crew of science misfits to investigate a rain that seems to be a serial killer, choosing its murder victims at random.

And then there are all of those frogs that seem to be following him.

Dan mostly wants Dog back from his ex-wife Karen, an F.B.I. agent, who just happens to be part of the F.B.I. Forensics Team that’s rolling up the flat bodies and hiding the corpses

This book was terrible. I know it's meant to be some kind of satire, but it's written so strangely and the main character is just awful. It's so oddly written that it felt like it was written by an A.I. that was trying to pass as human but failing.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

It's raining every day, and a drunken boor of a weatherman sees a lady killed by the rain. He has a nervous breakdown and talks about it on the air, and is fired.

Then he drinks a lot more.

Umm...what did I just read? I think you really have to have a particular sense of humor to really appreciate this. It was definitely nerd humor and it was satire for sure, but I think there was a mystery in there somewhere? I read an ARC, so it's possible the book still needed editing, but the writing was definitely uneven and there were places where the wrong word was used. So on the surface, it's about Dan the Weatherman trying to solve the case of the killer rain partly because he really thinks the rain is killing people (well, flattening them and therefore killing them), but also so he can get his dog back from his ex-wife, who is also an FBI agent who is conspiring to keep the killer rain a secret by whisking away the flat people and preventing anyone from talking about it. Oddly enough, he is working with his ex's new husband, who is also a medical examiner for the NYC department. There's a bunch of other craziness thrown into this, including the fact that he has a copper plate in his head and lightning follows him around but can't hurt him because the copper plate diverts the electricity from his heart. Oh, and did I mention his genius sister Spacey Stacey who is building a spaceship out of Goodwill parts in order to escape into space as the Earth continues to go to pot? Yeah, this was absolutely a ridiculous book. But for whatever reason, I kept on reading it and it even got a little bit more interesting as time went on. As I said, a very peculiar type of humor. I definitely had to be in the right mindset for this one. There is a blurb at the end where the author talks a little bit of her work at Sandia National Labs, which is a contractor for the Federal Government. She incorporated a few of her scientific experiences into this story, including a biometric hand scanner.

So an odd bit of story and Dan is kind of a terrible person and the writing style is on the strange side, but it's a quick read and I will willingly read the second installment when it comes out. It's for this reason I rounded up to 3 stars.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I ceased reading this book around the 15% mark. This book is not to my taste.

The story is a nihilist absurdist chaotic gonzo rage fest. The point of view character is an arsehole. I usually need to connect to a character to enjoy a story, and found no one likeable. To be fair, this is a plot driven book, not character driven, as far as I could tell.

Admittedly, One reason I had difficulty with this book is that many elements are logical extrapolations of what has been happening in the US for the last few years.

I gave this book 3 stars because it is not to my taste, yet it did not seem fair to rate it lower.

Received as a gift from an arc program that i belong to, this is a difficult book to explain. Somewhat sci-fi, somewhat humorous, somewhat not understandable. Not my cup of tea, but I did finish it. Give it a try, it might be YOUR cup of tea.

Have you heard of acid rain? Weatherman Dan has a problem, is that what killed a woman's flat corpse? What about the lightning strikes attacking his head and the permanent hole he must hide? His friend Doc, a ecological scientist and the rain that perpetually drenches his body if he leaves his house? Dan's sister, Spacy, who is building her own spaceship so she can leave Earth but still needs funding to complete? Coroner, the medical examiner who is married to Dan's ex-wife, an FBI agent, is eager to do post-mortems on these weird discoveries. These are the citizens ready to discover the mysterious happenings, solve global warming, and recover their professional reputations. This was a free book to read and review. I am not connected to anyone involved. I love the tongue-in-cheek stories and this one stuck my tongue with crazy glue! Really nonstop dialogue, scene shifts, well developed actors that "Oscar-up" their roles. This is a series to follow.

This is the first book in a new series. I have to say that it was very interesting. It took me a few chapters to get into the book, but once I did I was hooked. I mean a rain that kills and flattens people, really??? I have to say I could not figure anything out in this book. I was guessing till the end.

I can't wait till the next book comes out. Going to be a great one just like this one.

Mysterious Deaths, Impending Doom, Plus Really Serious Stuff, Like Dognapping

After a few pages, I had considered tossing this book into the DNR pile, but there was so much originality in the concept that I decided to keep reading. I'm very glad I did! It's an entertaining and thought-provoking book.

Weatherman 1 is written in an unconventional style that may be off-putting for the impatient. However, it's actually strong and timely science fiction masquerading as a whimsical black comedy. The farcical elements gave the author's delivery more punch during the sobering moments within the madness.

Besides, deadly serious topics such as climate change, government cover-ups, and the personal devastation frequently meted out by the fickle social media bully pulpit wouldn't be very entertaining without a liberal dose of humor to elevate it.

I had the good fortune of scoring an advance reader's copy of Weatherman 1: Killer Rain. If you like scifi with a big scoop of funny business, you'll love this book. I eagerly look forward to reading the next in the series!

Definitely unusual.

I found it really hard to get my head around this. I didn't care about or like any of the characters. It was also chaotic and weird and didn't make much sense. In the end I stopped about halfway thru, which is highly unusual for me.
