Ever since her friend Vivian mated a Veslor, Abby Thomas has been curious about the mysterious aliens. She also has a vested interest in making sure their newfound relationship with United Earth is a success, prompting her to take a job on a military vessel to ensure the Veslor grouping stationed there are treated fairly.
It doesn't hurt that they're easy to look at. When one Veslor in particular catches her attention, she hopes he's nothing like the humans she's dated, who were only interested in her bank balance and connections.
Drak and his Veslor grouping quietly endured unfair treatment aboard Defcon Red . . . until a beautiful spitfire spoke up on their behalf, earning herself nemeses among the ship's fleet.
When those foes try to silence Abby, Drak makes it his mission to protect her. The harrowing experience quickly bringing them so close, Drak is determined to make Abby his mate . . . if her enemies don't ruin his chance, permanently.
I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.
No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.
I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.
Drak and Abby were super cute together. I loved meeting another Veslor grouping. I loved the new warrior grouping very much but at the same time I’m sad Abbie and Vivian didn’t fall for a Veslor in the same grouping. It was a missed opportunity. They would have been amazing together. There’s already so much love between the females. They would be great sisters and would each bring something great to the group. However, I’m not worried about them. They are very good friends. Who knows the Veslor groupings can become great friends in the future as well. This book was good but it was lacking something. Was it a good stand alone? Eh. It was so, so. I wish it had more meat to the story.
Still pretty good and I can’t wait for more. I just wish the next book has more story. Maybe I’m being greedy. Lol.
Man, I waited and waited for this book. And it was so boring. There was zero conflict between the hero and the heroine. Just insta love and some boring sex and sorry to say fairly cringe worthy dialogue. The characterization was just missing. The heroine was an annoying do gooder. And I know absolutely nothing about the hero except he was pretty beta. It seems as if both of them were determined to mate before they even met.
No additional world building. The situation on the planet was idiotic. First the humans didn’t adequately check out the world they were immigrating to then they decide to wipe out a native species so they can live there. Ms. Dohner can do better. I’m so disappointed.
What in the world happened to this series? I am greatly underwhelmed by this couple. Abby was VERY hard to like and I'm still not sure she isn't the cause of this book not being as enjoyable as it could have been. A reluctant 3 stars.
Man, was there only one sex scene? Man, I think there was another one but it was just fast.
This started off as a 4 star read for me; I thought the action was exciting, especially when Abby went down to the treacherous planet Tobias (lol, I love how the planet has a nice guy's name) to tag along and see the Veslors in action. I think I suspected that
I don't know, but parts of this book seemed familiar to me--the humans hating on those that are different, in this case, the Veslor aliens. It reminded me of how in this author's New Species series, there are many humans who hate the New Species just because they're different. I think this book also reminded me of Book 1 of the series, where a misogynistic, xenophobic commander shouldn't be in charge but is for some reason and is totally incompetent and just terrible. The villains seemed a little one-dimensional here. This book still was original. I just think that Laurann Dohner needs a new type of villain/problem instead of resorting to human men hating on the aliens/those that are different.
Then towards the end of the book, I just found myself wanting to read other books/being really excited about them instead. But the reason why I can't give this book 4 stars is that I didn't feel the romance was totally concluded or developed and it seemed almost secondary to the story. The main plot seemed to be the men hating the aliens & going after Abby...
This book also had 4-5 grammar/spelling issues that annoyed me and could have used that further editing. "Extasy" was one mistake--seriously?
I LOVE the cover & thought the title was cute *guardian angel* but didn't get it till the end.
The Thomas name brings with it respect and envy throughout the known universe as to be a Thomas speaks of uber-wealth and business success to the extreme. Abby Thomas is grateful and appreciative that fame and success but yearns to be loved for herself instead of what her name brings to the table.
Abby makes it her mission to assure the comfort and safety of the Veslor grouping mercenaries assigned to the Defcon Red as it was their peers who saved her and her friend Vivian on a different vessel when her own life was at risk.
Seeing the happiness that resulted after Vivian mated Brassi, Abby now wonders if she can find a that same happiness with her own Veslor who has no idea of her family name or fortune.

Second installment in the "Veslor Mates" series that can be read as a stand alone as it features a different Veslor Warrior grouping in a totally different environment.
Abby & Drak. For the most part Abby is the strong female character who has a plan and goes for it while Drak is the one who has to deal with angst issues and struggles to come to terms that Abby is the one for him. To include for those who are on a need to know basis - there are adult content intimacy scenes but not to any extent that will set off fire alarms or melt ice.
Secondary characters do play an integral part in the story and add depth but only on a superficial level. The evil/bad guy characters are pretty obvious and the climatic confrontation with said evil doers is predictable for the most part but appreciated for it's positive outcome goals.
Enjoyable futuristic SciFi romance with spice for fans of this author and series. I can't really see an evolving series plot end game so guessing on my part the purpose of the series is to provide situations that result in Earth women/alien Veslor mating opportunities.
What happened to this series? It got off to such a great start with book one that I was so excited for book two to come over and even pre ordered! I’ll tell you what I think happened, I think some of the reviews or feedback must have been taken too seriously. I noticed some reviewers had an issue with the way the Veslars have to mate bond and now in this book there is NO official mate bonding scene. There are some hot scenes, that didn’t produce any heat, but no official bonding. I guess a few whiners from book one must have ran this series off course, why else would the A remove such a crucial element of this series? The story line was just so so. Nothing too exciting or creative. Team of veslars helping humans who don’t want them there fighting these big snake things down on a colony planet in shifts. Drak sounded exciting, but there was nothing unique about him. Abby annoyed me with how she was hesitant to bond to Drak. I understand her immediate cub concern, but it was important to him. There is a human male who is kind and helps Abby a few times and frankly the scenes that took place before he left the book had me rooting for the two of them more. I guess I just didn’t feel any romance or love between this couple. For those who were turned off by these alien guys being shifters, you should be happy to know no shifter adult fun takes place in this one. I hope this series gets back on track. At this point this series should absolutely be moved into Kindle unlimited. This non adventurous installment didn’t hit any specials bells.
I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. The first book was more sex than story so I guess I went in thinking the same and that was soooo not the case here. The hero and heroine gradually get to know one another and while Abby may not be 100% sold on the mating bond, Drak wants the ‘fierce little female’ right off the bat. After coming to the defense and aid of the Veslor Warriors (left to assist humans in protecting a human colony) more than once, Abby is determined that they be treated with respect. Unfortunately a few human men and their xenophobia threaten this new alliance between the races. Having seen her BFF bond and mate a Veslor, right off the bat Abby is thinking of finding one for herself. I really love how strong willed she was and how she never backed down from anything, it’s also what caught Drak’s eye. It was interesting also to see the dynamic between Drak and his grouping, especially their hesitation and fear over her wanting to settle down like Veslor women typically do. Lucky for them Abby thrives adventure and has no urgent need to plant roots and live on earth. The story was very fun overall with a bunch of little threats and squirmishes along the way rather than just on big climactic end, it kept things more exciting and moving along. Enjoying this new series, can’t wait I see where the author takes it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Abbi was a take charge firecracker with a set of steel lady balls and I loved her. She never backed down and also stood up for what's right. Drak was drawn to her bravery and compassion. I just love these Veslors. They are gallant, sweet, and passionate. Not to mention hot stud muffins who love to cuddle....yes please! I can't wait for the next one.
Genre: - Paranormal (Alien) Romance Series: - 2nd in series Love triangle? - Cheating? - HEA? - Would I read more by this author/or in this series? - Yes Rating - 3 ★
★Review★
Did not like this one quite as much as the first one. I found the heroine difficult to warm to and romance aspect lukewarm.
Also was disappointed that the MMC was not one of the Veslors that was a secondary character in the first book.
I did like Abby and Drak together but felt they got together very quickly - it almost felt like Abby would have gone for whichever Veslor showed her interest as she obviously wanted one.
However I will continue with the series as they are enjoyable reads.
This author is absolutely phenomenal at coming up with interesting characters and putting them into situations that just draw you in. I love this Veslor grouping and the human woman who made it her mission to protect them. From the first confrontation I was hooked and already I am looking forward to reading the book again. I can’t wait to find out what happens with the next Veslor grouping. I can’t imagine it’s going to be anything less than amazing.
Alien shifter series from my favourite author? I say yes please! I enjoyed the plot and the main characters, Drak and Abby were just perfect together. I especially appreciate that Abby was intelligent, resourceful go-getter and take no shit type of girl. I've skipped book one but now I can't wait to read it. If you like Insta-love and no misunderstanding between the hero and heroine, then this book is for you.
The heroine was a character in book 1, and I didn’t enjoy her then and disliked her in this book. She's spoiled, entitled and throws her connections as the reason everyone should listen to her. In fact, she is smart and capable, and her pushiness was not needed. The H and the plot were one dimensional and boring. I really didn't enjoy this book, but love the author. Just bad luck.
An enjoyable second installment to the Veslor Mates series and pleasant surprise after a couple less-than-great LD releases.
I'm rather surprised by all of the so-so to negative reviews on this one, and I'm glad I didn't pay them much mind before reading the book.
M:GA follows Abby, the ball-busting red head from the first book— tech genius, billionaire, fighter who gives no f*cks about who she pisses off along the way. Ms. Thomas has a bit of a hard-on for finding slimey jerks doing the wrong thing and busting them. Everyone needs a hobby, and this seems to be hers. Unconventional, but something good comes out of it, at least. She's insanely unpopular everywhere she goes and notorious for being...difficult. Abby has made it her personal mission to keep an eye on the Veslor who are working with Earth to make sure everything's on the up-and-up, and along the way, she finds a very interesting warrior male who catches her eye that she'd like to see how they mesh together.
While I was surprised by the less-than-stellar reviews on this book so far, I can understand the why of many of them: LD who definitely is formulaic and predictable in her writing and style choices actually bucked some genre tropes and expectations in this work—thus, my own surprise while reading.
✦ A lot of this book is actually plot/action based rather than all romance, all the time. It takes a bit for Drak and Abby to finally decide to give things a go. They spend a fair amount of time checking each other out and circling before they commit. Now, I like a lot of world building and sci-fi elements in my SFR, so I found the idea of this terribly-planned-colony and the predators that plague them rather interesting. Because the warrior groupings of the Veslor are known for not being mate-minded and even actively spurn the practice, it makes sense that a lot of our introduction to Drak is in action sequences that have nothing to do with Abby. He took notice of her early on, even was attracted to her, but being who and what he is, she wasn't an option. So. No pursuit right away. I found it refreshing to see a rather...normal and not crazed response to interest in a woman in a SFR.
But in this genre, if more than a few sentences are spent on world building without cutting to the chase in really short books, there tend to be complaints about how boring it was to read.
✦ Drak is definitely a bad-ass and alpha male, but not an OTT alphahole which doesn't seem to be going over well. Drak knows what he wants, is focused on getting to that goal, but he's also willing to be patient and wait for it. Since fully mating Abby would bring up complications for both his grouping and for her, I thought their solution to the problem was reasonable and made sense for the near future. It gives his grouping time to adjust and realize she's not going to bust them apart, and she has a chance to be ready for the guaranteed one-shot-one-kill style of mating impregnation his species is known for.
As someone who often tells my SO that what I want most is the blood of my enemies, I found that last action scene pretty swoon-worthy. And what's more alpha than ripping your woman's enemy to shreds in her honor?
I really hope there will be a future book that is with this same crew so we can see the reaction they have when they find out just how wealthy Abby Thomas is. It's adorable that they have no clue about her and want to take care of her financially. Bless all their hearts.
✦ We're not going to be reading stories from the same crew in these books. Whaaaaaaa?! This was the best surprise to me, because reading tales from only one group tends to get stale really fast. (And like with the Vorge crew, it becomes very, "we need to find a human for the last two guys; any human will do," which is gross and insulting.) Hopefully by visiting at least a couple different Veslor groupings in these stories, it will help keep the sameness and diminishing quality of the books at bay. Out of this grouping, I'm most rooting for Gnaw. And I'm looking forward to an Abby/Vivian reunion in a later work. They'll have plenty of opportunities to see each other without having to be family.
So overall, I really enjoyed this one. The sex wasn't as steamy as I would like, but that's going to happen sometimes. I liked seeing emotional attachment, mutual curiosity, and respect play a bigger role than hormone-frenzied lust.
I don't know what happened to L.D's books lately. There is really something missing. Her heroes became more submissive and obedient. If you compare them with their reputation, you will find that they are less than what they should be. In this book , for example, they get insulated most of the time. They work under unfair treatment. They were mocked at. But they didn't do anything to justify themselves, what a pity. I didn't read about what made Veslor fighters special or unique. This is not the first book I give with low rating unfortunately. I'm really sorry to say that but it is the truth. There is something missing with the latest books from my favourite author L.D. 😢
Abby can be quite in your face and she doesn't take crap from anyone. What really pisses her off is seeing the Veslors mistreated and taken advantage of. She decides to step in to rectify the situation, making a few more enemies along the way. I liked how Drak rescued Abby and how close he is with his grouping.
DNF @ 64%. Most likely will finish this at a later time. I need to find some stronger females that don’t submit so easily to the H. Just finding myself skipping over parts. Not holding my attention.
Abby came from a very wealthy family. A successful businesswoman herself with her parents. For that very reason, she was the target of fortune hunters. Tired of this, and also being chased by reporters (her last boyfriend sued her for a large sum for the time they spent together), she managed to get off Earth, and work as a personal assistant to Commander Howard Bills, who was like an uncle to her. Of course, being also so beautiful, Abby was the target of gossip, when everyone believed that she and Howard were lovers.
But her trip to Defcon Red was mainly because of the Veslors. Veslors were a strong alien race that had been making an alliance with the earth, selling food (the Earth had gone through a period of extreme scarcity). Now, they had also negotiated that some of their warriors work for humans. Since the Veslors saved Abby's friend Vivian, as well as several crew members from Gorison Traveler, Abby felt responsible for their coming to the planet, and knew that several xenophobics were going to try to make Veslors' lives miserable. And she was right in her assumptions.
From the beginning, Commander Bradley Rogers and his mates did everything to make it difficult for the Veslors to adapt, as well as making them easily hurt, as well as working several shifts in a row. Abby became their guardian angel, which surprised them. Even more so after they found out she was the human responsible for sealing Gorison Traveler, preventing the Ke'ters from reaching the rest of the crew and killing them in the most brutal way.
This was not the opinion of many human soldiers. For them, she was the traitor that didn't give Gorison's crew a chance to defend themselves.
This malaise caused animosity between humans and Veslors to increase, but, on the other hand, Abby fell in favor of the Veslors, especially Drak.
The Veslors' mission was to work by helping humans rid of other alien races dangerous to miners on the planet Tobias. In an agreement made with their king, after a period, they would receive lands as payment for themselves. The Veslor group was united, and although they received notification that humans and Veslors were sexually compatible - and might even have cubs (children) - to the surprise of the group's leader, Roth -, they should remain away from human females, without sexual intercourse, and especially without getting them pregnant.
But Drak was unable to resist Abby's way, personality and strength of character, and when he saw her in danger, his protective alpha male side went into action.
Each time Abby defended the Veslors and showed the atrocities that Rogers and his men did, the more she put herself in danger, until on a mission she was thrown into a hole where Cadias aliens slept during the day, and there was little time left for them wake up, and go out devouring everything that has meat in their bodies.
The rescue of Abby by Drak and Gnaw puts Rogers in an even worse position, making Abby a sure target to be silenced for good.
Lots of adventure and romance. Waiting for the next book. 5 stars
I always read Laurann Dohner's books and after re-reading The Gorison Traveler Incident, the Veslor Mates Book 1, I pre-ordered Mission: Guardian Angel (Book 2), received it today and I gorged on it all in just a few hours! I can't believe it--I had planned on reading it in a more moderate fashion but it was so good I just blitzed through it. Oh well, I'll re-read it just before Book 3 is available!
2.7 The first part gave me the impression that this might be an interesting series. But the second part abruptly dashed my hopes. There is no chemistry between the characters, everything is somehow cold and boringly described and written. The only good thing that this writer has written is the New Species series and it seems to me more and more that she will never repeat that same success. I really doubt that I will continue reading this series. I'm too disappointed.
An alien hero who can change forms into a panther like animal with claws finds his human mate. They battle prejudice and evil aliens to get their happy ever after.
She is very rich and happy to find a guy who wants her for herself, not her money.
