Can you image living life to the fullest, enjoying everyday and then suddenly everything changes because war breaks out? Peyton Fuller, was just one of those girls. Picking out dresses to wear and wishing her beau Justine would ask her to marry him.
But men started arriving in their town of Harrisburg, volunteers who were being led by a Colonel Stout to prepare before they headed to battle. Peyton had seen the Colonel the day before on his horse, in the midst of the men making their way down the street. When he had look up and seemed to meet her eyes and give a wave, she could see his blue eyes from the window above.
Knowing what happened in the Civil War and reading this story, really pulled at my heart. Before everything began to happen and how carefree Peyton had been, just wanting Justine to propose to her, but he just wanted her to wait for him.
She and Mason, Colonel Stout meet, and she is mesmerized by him. He is very attracted to her but he knows, he will never marry, just to leave his wife a widow one day.
Christine Sterling has created a wonderful story to start this new series and I cannot wait to read more. Her words always pull me in and make me feel I am there with the characters. Don't miss this journey of two people who might just find love unexpectedly and be the perfect match! Plus there is a very special little boy named Pup who will make you smile and want to hug him! Loved it!

A Good Start to a new series

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were believable, the storyline was good, and it was set in Pennsylvania. I love the concept of a Civil War series that tells about the human side of the war. Right up my alley!!

THEREIN LIES THE RUB

As a family genealogist, I have studied my lineage within the Civil War, and that includes family members that fought on opposite sides, ones who died while serving, and those who returned from war a different person. As a lover of historical-based romance, this new series will cover a touch of history and a sweet and clean romance.

The story will take place in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and will have Union Colonel Mason Stout leading rag-tag men to train for service to the Union Army. They will set up near the agriculture center and name Curtin’s field, Camp Curtin. With several thousand men brought to the area, the Army will need food, supplies, and ammunition. For those in the area, it brings in income, but it also takes away the quiet ease of the town.

Peyton Fuller has been courting a local man, Justin Miller, but when the military arrives, he has new plans to capitalize on the military and their needs. He will ask Peyton to wait for him for one year. Meeting and getting to know Colonel Mason Stout will change things and leave her confused because she starts developing feelings for him. The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of war, secrets, and treason. It will have Peyton realizing that her dreams and future with Justin may be crumbling away. Has God brought someone honorable her way? Will she discover the difference between infatuation and true love?

“Oh Peyton, honey,” her mother said, patting her hand. “You have a gift right in front of you. Reach out and grab it with both hands. Don’t waste your time on a dream.”

“Perhaps her mother was right. Did she ever really love him? She just knew that she didn’t want to waste a year when what she wanted was right in front of her.”

A shocking revelation will come to light and leave several people questioning what did they really know about Justin Miller. What will this do to the reputation of Peyton? Will people believe the worst of her too?

“You’ll marry me. I’m not marrying you to save you, Peyton. You don’t need saving. I’m marrying you because I love you. There is something about you that consumes me. I want to be with you every second. When I’m away from you, I think about how soon until I can get back to you. Marry me, Peyton. Let’s be a family. You. Me. Pup.”

The story takes place from April 1861 until October 1861, during the early part of the civil war. Most of Pennsylvania will serve in the Union Army and will sympathize with the Union and President Lincoln. But not all, as will be revealed in this first book.

NOTE: "This is book one in a thirty-seven book series written by multiple authors. The books are published in chronological order, telling one story in each state or territory during the war. The stories reflect each year over the five years of the Civil War. It is a sweet and wholesome romance set against one of the bloodiest wars in the United States."

I always love having the opportunity to read and review books by Caryl McAdoo. She does an excellent job of creating characters that come to life and storylines that capture my attention and imagination. Kentucky Bride was no exception. Set in 1861 during the Civil War, Gigi is a feisty and determined young woman. Her father and brother are off fighting the war while her grandfather, mother, sister, and herself try to keep things going at their mercantile.

Of course, girl has to meet boy so sparks can fly. This book shows it is possible to fall in love in a short period of time. I love how this book examines not only the time of the Civil War, but also how different people had different views on slavery and how they treated their slaves/servants. The relationship between Gigi and Daisy as well as Ephraim and Bonaparte illustrates how familial bonds can transcend everything else.

Of course, no book like this reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet would be complete without a meddlesome parent, and in this case that role goes to Gigi’s mother. But Gigi’s grandfather is able to put her mother in her place, and helps make Gigi’s plans come to life.

So if you like Christian Historical fiction, check out this book for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from CelebrateLit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Peyton Fuller, Young, beautiful and wealthy. Unspoiled and full of life. Her family was wealthy but down to earth and believed in helping those that were unfortunate. They paid the men and women that worked for them, didn't own them.
Union Colonel Mason Stout a young man who had been through much in his career with the Army. Injured he left the service, but missed it greatly.. When the call to Arms to fight against the Confederacy came he answered with a full heart.
They meet in Harrisburg, PA and their story begins. This story will have drama between the two, intrigue when A spy is discovered so early on in the war. Can the two overcome the drama and realize they were meant to be? A young orphan boy might just be the key to bring them together.
This Author captures the heart and soul of Women during the war. Their feelings when they feel betrayed as their men go off to fight for their country. She captures the feelings of men leaving behind their loved ones as well. These two are determined to survive and she gives them both the strength to learn to do it together.
I read this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down.

Part history, part mystery, and part romance. An intriguing introduction to a Civil War romance series. One story per state at the start of the Civil War. As a retired American Literature teacher and inspired by Abraham Lincoln's life, I never thought much have what each state contributed to the Civil War besides soldiers. I understood the sacrifices of the Southern Plantations in areas of the war. This avid reader is researching other aspects of this historical war. Christine Sterling describes Hendersonville, Pennsylvania and characters from all walks of life - debutants, business owners, officers in the army, spies, and orphans. The plot moves with some unexpected twists and turns. Informative, yet entertaining.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator made the story come alive. Another great book from Sterling! This story pulled me in right from the start. So real feeling too, with all the soldiers in town making it a busy place.
Peyton finds out the man she is courting is going to join the army. Well she wanted to marry before he leaves but he doesn’t want to marry right then. I think you will enjoy the story of Peyton and what happens till she finds the happiness she’s looking for. I know I did.
I received this audiobook code because I asked for it but was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Sweet

This was a beautiful love story. A very innocent and naive young woman. So sad that women were not more enlighten in that social setting, too genteel for the northern and southern women. So happy that her eyes were opened. up was and added bonus, just loved him. I would like to know more about his brother Henry and whatever happens to Justin. He needs to face punishment also.

This is a new author to me and I have no doubt about her future books I’ll read. Her writing is that it gets your attention keeps it until you finish then flip the page just to make sure it really is the end of the book.

Civil war era, ah,...this author did research and incorporated that into this book.

I can recommend this to my advanced reading preteen friends as no sexual references or language

Peyton Fuller's life changes as soldiers stream into Harrisburg to prepare for a war between the states. As they march past her door, she sees a soldier. Union Colonel Mason Stout, recovering from a crippling injury, trains recruits. Peyton and Mason meet.

The Civil War, a horrible time in American history. This story brought that out. Love in the midst of darkness shines brighter. I got a taste of the pain and anguish each person suffered.

Civil War and Espionage

Even though war isn't romantic, romance can still spring up. Peyton thought she loved Justin, but later figured out that she wanted to be a true sister to Catherine and didn't love Justin. Mason makes her feel things that she never felt before. Justin had been courting her for a year but never even tried to kiss her. After meeting Mason, she started having doubts about Justin and her relationship with him.

What a great start to this new and exciting series. This is Peyton and Mason's story and is full of history, secrets and some mystery, betrayal, espionage and romance. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I look forward to the remaining approx. 31 books in the series to come in the next year and a half.

So sweet

The history and the story of love transcending the threat of going off to war. Fr Catherine, finding love and wondering if your love is going to have to fight in a war and possibly become a widow. For Peyton not understanding true love. Holding tight to a childhood vision of love not to find the difference is far greater.

I listened to this one on audio.

What a great start to the series! If the rest of the series is near as good, I will be in love. The story was great with a bit of mystery thrown in. I thought the characters were well written and the story flowed nicely.

The narrator was great, I thought she did a fantastic job.

I really enjoyed this romance! It was like all her friends and family were conspiring to hook her up with the colonel even though she was "practically engaged" to her long time beau! The narration was really good! The characters were different enough to tell them apart, and then men sounded like men!

A read full of history, mystery and romance. It's so nice to be able to read clean wholesome romance books and still feel the enchantment of love. While I tend to be more of a wholesome contemporary romance reader, this historical read pleasantly surprised me.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review.

SWEET WAR BRIDE

A clean SWEET story about a young woman who wants to marry before the Civil War begins; but the man she wants
to marry may not be all she expects him to be. Should she marry another who appears to love her? Short story.

Meh

Didn't realize how short this story was going to be. So short there wasn't really a story at all, felt like a long summary of a full length book. Glad it was available on kindle unlimited.

Weak!

Not much of a story here. Had high hopes in the beginning but like most of these freebie authors they just fizzle out and then abruptly end.

This started out with two giggly girls and I'm very pleased to say that these girls matured as the story progressed. Once the military came to town, things picked up. It was pretty easy to understand that Justin was duping everyone. I really liked Mason, Pup and Peyton. I loved this and the bits of history thrown in were very intriguing. I'd definitely love to read more from this author. I love books that my whole family can enjoy.

The description above doesn't actually match the book...

Peyton Fuller lives in Pennsylvania before the start of the Civil War. She's been courting her beau for a year, but Justin hasn't proposed yet. Her best friend is engaged to Justin's brother and the girls are hoping to become sisters in law.
Mason was injured while in the Army, out West. Now he's volunteered again. Since his injuries prevent him from the rigors of fighting and marching, he's in Harrisburg to train the new recruits before they ship out. He meets Peyton and wishes to get to know her better. But she's not sure about Justin...they aren't engaged but should she wait around for him? Or could she lose her chance at true love in front of her?
It is a clean, sweet romance. I liked it, but then again it's Civil War era and I read everything I can about it. I liked how the author included little snippets of interesting points from the time period and described how things were back then. I did think that the majority of the story was spent in the set up rather than in the romance. It felt a bit like the romance and ending was a bit rushed, but it was still enjoyable.
Super excited for the rest of the books in this new series as well!
