‘Of course the pit is a poem But in another truer way It’s a fucking pit’
In his debut collection of poems, Juliano Zaffino writes about the collapsing hellhole modern world around us, ‘sort of orgasmic, mostly tragic’, a world of Instagram envy and digital nazi hunters, escalating xenophobia and the instability of the individual.
Told in three parts, and stitching together free-standing poems with two sequences (‘Adventures In Heteroland’ and ‘This Light Up Mirror’), this is a collection that moves constantly from private to public, in which no one – not the poet, not Odysseus, not your Alexa speaker and definitely not Marge or Lisa Simpson – is safe.
‘He examines queer identity and the flesh, takes ideas of the body, and pierces them through with millennial angst.’ - Florence Welch

I feel as a disclaimer I should start by saying I broke the cardinal rule of book buying and judged it by its cover by when said cover includes renaissance art, a slightly ominous title and then also name drops Florence Welch you know it’s going to be amazing. Juliano Zaffino weaves together a perfect encapsulation of today’s zeitgeist with dry wit, humour and the perfect amount of existential anxiety to make this book a must read for every twenty-something millennial.
'All Those Bodies And They're Moving' captures the emotional rollercoaster of being in your twenties, the constantly fluctuating state of gaining momentum and then being set back, disappointed and left in limbo. It provides snapshots of intense feelings, in matters of love, hope, anger, politics, social media and even The Simpsons... and tackles these complex feelings with a dark sense of humour and wit in a way that feels very genuine and visceral. A very promising debut!
Fantastic debut poetry collection - a necessary read for anyone looking for some quality queer millennial angst and lines like "as if denial was the time you spent between each separate check of the screen" and "it's so tiring to always be conjuring; never arrested in writing, never rested" that I can't stop thinking about. Truly the future of British poetry.
This collection of poetry is truly amazing. A collection of various feelings transformed into perfectly fitting words. Those words describe authentically what the world around us feels like nowadays. There were many moments in which I really felt what I read, which let me fully dive into the poetry. An amazing debut, which I would 100% recommend!
