In this first novel of the series, we find former Navy Seal, Russell Bricklin “Bric” Wahl as the guy that every Key West local knows and every tourist wants to be. Relaxed, tanned by island sun and comfortable in his skin, he slides onto a barstool next to you at Schooner Wharf and lets you buy him a beer. Ex-Navy Seal, Key West native and full-time treasure diver, Bric has been searching for a fortune in gold and silver in the Florida Keys his whole life. Today he may have found it, but not the treasure he expected. Diving on a sunken Spanish Galleon, he finds three massive gold bars, not from the wreck that sunk in 1733, but apparently from the Civil War. Bric thinks he’s finally unearthed his fortune. Or has he?
Bric Wahl is an ex Navy Seal, certified wreck diver and one step up from being homeless. Being a wrecker isn't as profitable as it used to be especially when you work for someone else. Especially when you ex-wife dies of cancer and you now have 2 teenage kids to take care of. They found a salvage boat from a doomed 1733 ship, though that proved to be profitable. Not as much as they thought, though. Where is the gold that was supposed to be there? When Bric gets framed for murder, it doesn't look good, because the only one that can clear him is a 6'5 crossdresser that nobody can find. Lots of humor in this one and a bit of mystery.
It was an ok book. I did get a few laughs when he talks about lobster season, and the whole houseboat scenario. I wasn't quite sure what the story was supposed to be about. Somewhere I read that this book was about Bric getting accused of murder ... but that doesn't happen until the last 20% of the book. Again, it was an ok read with a few laughs, but the plot itself seemed to be missing. I will probably try to read the next one.
I found this book to be exciting, funny and personal. I loved the wit and sarcasm, as well as some tender moments! It was well written, even with just a few small grammar issues. I quite enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one! Well done!
