Lianna of Grasleigh spends all her days weaving tapestries of dragons and shadows, avoiding the intrigues of court, and trying desperately with needle and thread to recapture the beauty she has lost. She dreams of a fearless knight to rescue her from the king's stern wardship...
Jason of Artane is determined to leave his past behind and pursue a noble quest, but his plans take a different turn when he crosses paths with a mysterious young woman. His life changes when he see her true self and pulls her out of the shadows and into his heart...
Lynn began her writing career at the tender age of five with a series of illustrated novellas entitled Clinton’s Troubles in which the compelling hero found himself in all sorts of . . . well, trouble. She was living in Hawaii at the time and the scope for her imagination (poisoned fish, tropical cliffs, large spiders) was great and poor Clinton bore the brunt of it. After returning to the mainland, her writing gave way to training in classical music and Clinton, who had been felled with arrows, eaten by fish and sent tumbling off cars, was put aside for operatic heroes in tights.
Somehow during high school, in between bouts of Verdi and Rossini, she managed to find time to submerge herself in equal parts Tolkien, Barbara Cartland and Mad Magazine. During college, a chance encounter with a large library stack of romances left her hooked, gave her the courage to put pen to paper herself, and finally satisfied that need for a little bit of fantasy with a whole lot of romance!
To Kiss in the Shadows was a pure delight. I might have read this one many years ago but I honestly didn't remember reading it. But I loved Jason receiving his HEA. I really loved the set up of this story. Seeing Jason Artane (who was the squire for one of my favorite heroes.....the Dragon "Christopher"). It delves into court polliticis and the social structure for women at the time. We see our heroine who has no family left and she is forced to be in court while the King sets up a match for her as her father had many lands and wealth. Then we have Jason and his brother who are both at court and kinda do this competition for her hand and it was delightful. I loved the humor, the brotherly banter and fights, the setting of the court and the beautiful caretaking that happens which is one of my catnips in a historical romance.
If you are a fan of medievals, or this series or just a fun historical novella....this needs to be your goto!!!!!
A great little addition to the De Piaget series, but I'm so disappointed to have JASON'S story be squished into a short story! I love Jason!! I was really looking forward to having his love story be drawn out into a whole book. :( She did this with Miles too, and I was really annoyed by that. I wish stupid Richard de Galtres would have been the short one. When you get so used to one of the sweet De Piaget boys as a brother or as a squire, you have a lot of hopeful emotions invested in them. It always feels like such a let down and a jip when Kurland gives us some sped up version of a love story that only lasts me a couple hours! Honestly it kinda sucks. Come on Lynn! Sheesh!
Oh well. At least Montgomery got his own book.
Anyway, Jason falls in love with Lianna, who has a face that was once beautiful, but now marked by the pox. He, having been trained by the blind Christopher of Blackmour, has an appreciation for what can be seen by the heart and mind, as opposed to the eye alone, making them a good pair. He is a sweetheart and takes care of her when she is poisoned by the evil girls at Henry's court. Then Jason has to fight his brother Kendrick for Lianna's hand. But it all turns out well, as you would expect. And Lianna is brought home to Blackmour to meet Christopher and Gillian. It's short and sweet. Just way too short and not sweet enough for me to be satisfied.
My very first Lynn Kurland, read in the anthologyTapestry. I have always been a fan of medieval romances, so finding this short gem was an unexpected delight. Not knowing previous stories or characters of the de Piaget universe, the author provided enough backstory for both our would-be lovers, Jason and Lilliana, along with the brotherly banter between Jason and Kendrick, to fully endear me to their HEA. Plus a little hint of magical mystery thrown in! While I am not sure I will read the entire backlist, Kendrick, Christopher, and Robin's stories are certainly now on my TBR.
This was a short and sweet addition to the de Piaget saga. While I would have loved it to be longer, the story did hit all the high points for me. As a ward in King Henry's court, Lianna has no control over her life. She now spends her days weaving tapestries and doing her best to remain in the background. Once a beautiful woman, she is frequently the butt of jokes and mockery, thank to scarring from a bout of smallpox.
I liked Lianna from the very beginning. I felt terrible about the way she was treated but thought she had a pretty good attitude about it, preferring to go her own way rather than fight a losing battle. I felt her disgust with the way the other women plotted and schemed to trap Kendrick. It was hilarious to listen to her express her opinions of Kendrick, not knowing that he was the stranger who snuck into the solar to hide from his pursuers. I loved the way that Kendrick stood up for her against them when they returned to the room, but I suspected that they were going to create trouble because of it.
For all of the glowing reputation that Kendrick has, Jason's status is just the opposite. Because he was squire to Christopher Blackmour, who was rumored to be a warlock and other grim things, Jason is believed to be just as bad. When we first see Jason, he is in a foul mood from chasing after Kendrick to deliver a message and having just had to deal with the flagrant fears of those he encountered. All he wants to do is deliver his message and get on with his plans to join the Crusades. Instead, he met Lianne and was immediately and inexplicably drawn to her. That fascination ended up saving Lianne's life. It was satisfying to see Jason use his reputation to gain the cooperation he needed to save her. His protectiveness as he watched over her treatment and recovery was impressive. His ability to "see with his heart" had a significant effect on Lianne and her confidence - I loved the scene with the bitchy women and Lianne's needlework chest. I loved how Jason fell fast and hard for Lianne and felt for him when he realized that as a third son he might not win her hand. There was an unexpected obstacle and twist thrown in his way, and I wasn't sure how that was going to work out.
I loved the last chapter. Lianne's nervousness was realistic, and it was fun to see the way that Jason tweaked it. Their arrival at Blackmour was not at all what Lianne expected, and I loved seeing her reactions. The meeting with Christopher was awesome and great fun to witness. I adored the ending, especially Christopher's wedding gift to Jason, and the emotional effect it had on him.
One of my favorite things about this story was the relationship between Jason and Kendrick. All of the sons of Robin of Artane have this unique way of showing their love for each other. The constant baiting and battling were fun to watch. Though their relationship with each other is frequently contentious, they immediately join forces when faced with an outside threat.
This was a sweet story, but I felt like I blinked and then it was over. I adored reading about Jason in Christopher's and Colin's stories so I was sorry to have Jason's story be so short. I really liked the characters, but it felt like the romance between Jason and Lianna was too quickly developed, even for a short story. Despite this, I'm glad I read it as it as a relaxing way to spend an evening and it was fun to revisit some of my favorite characters. I also liked how lessons Jason had learned from his blind master were woven into this story as he ends up falling for a woman of great inner beauty but outer scars. 4 stars.
To Kiss in the Shadowsby Lynn Kurland was a lovely little addition to LK's De Piaget series. I had wondered about Jason from several of LK's books...and was glad to see him find his own HEA...Lianna is marked by pox, but that doesn't cover what a wonderful girl she is. Jason has been taught to really see, not just with his eyes, but with his heart by his blind master. They learn to SEE each other and it's lovely.
Jason of Artane, youngest son of Lord Robin, has a black reputation. He was squire to Christopher of Blackmour, supposed wizard. Being a third son doesn't count for much when seeking the hand of a heiress. No time travel involved but a fun look at the young but mighty warrior, middle brother Kendrick. And a moral tale of love and evil. Short but complete.
3.50 Stars. (WW/WM). Historical romance set in Medieval England. The hero, Jason of Artane, is the youngest of 3 brothers with a reputation for dabbling in black magic and other unsavory behaviors. The heroine, Lianna of Grasleigh, is the ward of King Henry who prior to the facial scaring from the plague was considered to be one of the most beautiful heiresses in the Kingdom. Because of this scaring, Lianna as resigned herself to sewing and making tapestries and pretending not to hear the mean unkind things that many courtiers are saying; especially, gossip from Maud of Horrow and others in the sewing group. Kendrick, Jason’s middle brother has befriended Lianna and was seen talking to her resulting in her being poisoned, Jason saves her life and Lianna and Jason fall in love. Kendrick and Jason are forced to a battle to the death for Lianna’s hand in marriage; but the brothers love for each other fraught the battle to the death and ensure that Jason and Lianna get their happy ever after. To celebrate their happiness, Lianna plans to design and sew a tapestry commemorating the union of Grasleigh and Artane families.
How typical of this author---sheer romance (dressed with dashing knights), nasty ladies of the court, and of course the King. Add on heroine, with a slight disfigurement on her face from the pox and these very nasty ladies and a life spent leaning not to be seen or heard! Then comes not one but two heroes, and they are brothers! What an incredible "mental vacation" from stress and cares! This author is a must buy for many years but somehow, I missed this one. I'm really glad I got it thanks to Kindle. My eye-sight is getting bad, thanks to AMD, but with Kindle, I can still read! I have all the print book by this author, but the print is too small for my eyes now. Bravo Ms Kurland!
A wonderfully short novella continuing the de Piaget series with Jason de Piaget and Lianna of Grassleigh, with a reprise including Kendrick de Piaget and The Dragon of Blackmour.
The book takes place after the book From This Moment On which features Colin of Berkhamshire and Ailenore of Solange, and should be followed by the book The More I See You featuring Richard de Galtres and Jessica.
The story is romantic and I liked the characters. The interaction between the brothers was amusing. It was nice to see the hero see beyond physical beauty and appreciate the beauty inside the heroine. Once Christopher’s character appeared towards the end it was easy to understand how such a young man could appreciate inner beauty.
Sweet little romance, from the Tapestry anthology. Lovely short story, but soo extra sweet doubt I'll be reading more from this series. Really great characters but there was so much missing of their development and the world building that it was hard to connect. Probably interesting if you enjoyed the series and already had a connection to the story, characters and their world.
Lianna is a lady disfigured and ridiculed at court even with her high station. Jason, with his dark reputation and his brother the most sought after knight at court seek out her company, protecting her and bringing her out of the shadows. Lovely romance.

A great short story. I love the characters, time and development of this book. I felt it really needed to be a bit longer. There was a major element that was never resolved. The romance though developed, it could have used more pages to solidify.
An adorable short novella about the youngest son of Robin De Piaget. Jason comes across as dark, one who dabbles in the unknown but really is sweet and caring. And only the best choice for Lianna who’s had a hard life of loss and poison herself.
Thoroughly enjoyed this read and recommend it. I loved the story and the way so many characters from the author's books were woven into this tale (Kendrick's story is one of my favorites).
This was a story of a young lady named Lianna being under the king's protection for the lands that she holds being the sole survivor of an attack. The king needs to find her a suitable match and a young knight named Kendrick befriends her but when his brother arrives, Lianna only has eyes for Jason, the third son. It's an impossibility that they would be able to wed, though they both feel for the other, but unfortunate circumstances came to be that her honor needs to be protected and a dual ensues. It's a good story, I enjoyed it and I felt the hurt and I got angry so appropriate emotions were stirred. *chuckles* I liked the story and I'm glad it ended how it ended and the tale of the tapestry was woven throughout.
I have a book with four tales, all centered around tapestries though not the same one. :) It's called Tapestry. LOL
This was a reread. I’d originally read this 2002 when it was released. Loved as much this time as the first. Do wish the book were much longer, more the length of a regular novel. It was a work, nap time read. I’d take it to work and read a little while the children I care for napped.
The novella, To Kiss in the Shadows, was originally a part of the Tapestry anthology. This is the story of Jason, Christopher of Blackmour's young squire and Robin of Artane's son. One of the things that I love about this story is the range of the author's talent that it shows. The "outline" of this story was already given in a previously written book (Stardust of Yesterday). Lynn Kurland had to create the story based on the short, but very definitive, outline she had already provided. It shows an incredible talent to base a whole story on a few lines. It also shows her talent that she was able to take a story that showed one character as the hero, twist it around, make a different character the hero, and do so in a way that is TOTALLY believable! :)
Jason of Artane, and more recently of Blackmour, is the son of one of England's most powerful lords. One would think that a handsome, wealthy, third son of a powerful lord would be well respected and liked. However, since he has spent the most of his life in the company of one of England's most feared lords, the Dragon of Blackmour, as his squire, Jason is more like a plague - something that people fear and run from when possible. This is especially uncomfortable when his father sends him to the court of King Henry to find his incorrigible older brother Kendrick and give him a message. Kendrick is leading Jason on a chase through England and it is not putting him in a good mood.
Then, while trying to find his brother, Jason happens upon a young lady in a darkened hallway and everything in his life seems to fall into place. Before he has even seen her face or learned her name, he finds himself escorting her to a meeting with a mystery man...his brother! Fortunately, Kendrick has no interest in the young lady, Liana of Grasleigh, but it doesn't take long for Jason to realize that he has lost his heart completely. For Liana is a very special woman with a warm and giving heart and she, too, seems to have found a home with Jason.
But the court intrigues get in the way and an old family foe threatens not only Jason and Liana, but Kendrick, as well. Before he knows what has happened, Jason is stuck in a fight to the death with his brother with the woman he loves as the prize! Well...he has another brother anyway...but there is only one woman for him!
The romance between Jason and Liana is a little fast paced, but believable none the less. It is clear why Jason would fall in love with the scarred Liana and who wouldn't fall for the gentle and caring Jason? As the last of the Blackmour trilogy within the de Paiget series, it finishes the theme that runs throughout. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and true beauty comes from the heart.
This is a short, sweet novella. As most of Kurland's fans would say, it would have been better if it has been longer. Not because the story needed to be longer, but because Jason is such a lovable character within the series that we would have wanted to see more of him. But baring that, this story doesn't lack because it is short! It is a great, quick read and it fills in a lot of pieces to the story's puzzle. It is an irresistible addition to the de Piaget series!

oh goody! i found a Lynn Kurland story i haven't read! oh no! it sucks!
i realize it's hard to write a good short story, but someone of LK's talents could have done a nice job if she wanted to. what was the message that their dad wanted Jason to deliver to Kendrick? and why did Jason not deliver the message? why in the world would a group of women want to kill the heroine? it made no sense. belittle and bully her yes, but murder her? what would they gain? since she was ward of the king, seems like they'd have way too much to lose! and yes, it was a "short" story, but LK couldn't spare us a paragraph or even a sentence regarding the wedding night? really? since Jason knew Berengaria and her friends and got medicine from them, they could not have given him any tiny thing at all to help the heroine's scars? not even a little? pffft! LK totally cheated us with this one, and honestly, it made me kind of angry.
