Kade has been Logan’s beta since they were only boys and Logan considers him to be his best friend and closest advisor. But once Kade tells Logan how he really feels about him—and tells him he’d like to be more than just friends, things aren’t the same between them anymore. Logan rejects Kade, telling him lovers come and go, but friendship lasts forever, and he doesn’t ever want to lose what’s between them.
But after a wild night under the moonlight, Kade discovers that he’s going to have a baby. It sounds impossible, unbelievable—betas don’t get pregnant! But it’s true, according to the doctors. He is not the beta he always believed himself to be. Somehow he must be a male omega, only valued for his ability to breed. Determined to keep his secrets and avoid the shame of being a lowly omega, he takes the first bus out of town.
But after a few months, he finds himself broke, hungry and unable to provide for himself. Then one day, walking to a food shelter, a big SUV pulls up beside him and Logan erupts from the truck like the wrath of God. He is shocked to learn of Kade’s pregnancy, but takes Kade back home with him, not realizing who the father of Kade’s baby really is.
Can Kade somehow make this work, tell Logan the truth and make Logan fall in love with him? Or is his relationship doomed to failure, so that Kade has to run again?
This is really bad. I couldn't finish it, and I would give it less that one star if I could.
The first annoying thing was the super repetitive yet contradictory exposition. Example: Yes, we get it, you HAVE to leave because of your unrequited obsession with your best friend; we don't need to hear slightly different variations of the same explanation twenty times. Example: Were they best friends from birth or was Best Friend/Love Interest several year older? Agh! I pushed through the annoyance hoping for a decent story to emerge.
The second problem was a lot harder to minimize: harmful racial stereotyping. You're going to have the random Mexican be inexplicably violent and shoot out a family services center full of pregnant people because of course all Mexicans are part of drug gangs? Really? No. Not acceptable. Oh, and the whole "Our pack looks like Cherokees, but of course we're NOT THE SAME." And the casual dismissal of the violence against the Native Americans as a side note explanation for how the pack moved to avoid it because they didn't want to be associated with the Cherokees? Not acceptable.
The third thing that was the final straw was how the Best Friend/Romantic Interest was just straight up abusive. Within the course of a few days he had: -screaming demanded answers and then refused to let the main character speak to answer -physically shaken the main character -mocked the main character's interests and values -thrown away the main character's belongings -dismissed the main character's reasonable grief over losses -forced physical attention on the main character that the main character repeatedly protested and refused -began micromanaging the main character's clothing choices, food choices, and medical care without any consideration for what the main character wanted -drove away people interested in forming friendship with the main character -shared his plan to repeatedly impregnate the main character without any conversation or consideration about whether the main character wanted that. -stripped away all the responsibilities and jobs the main character had previously demonstrated skill in performing -married the main character and changed his name without consent or even a conversation ahead of time And this isn't even a comprehensive list.
I read some pretty dark stuff, but this...this is not okay. I think I would be different if it was presented as a bad situation that needed to change, it's presented as a ROMANCE. THIS IS NOT #RELATIONSHIPGOALS If someone ever treats you like that, run for the hills as fast as you can. It is dangerous to promote this type of abuse as romantic.
Logan is the pack alpha. Kade is his best friend and beta. Kade's had a crush on Logan for a long time. When he finally gets up the courage to tell him Logan claims he wants a family and Kade being a beta can't give him one. He also claims that Kade is to wild and could never settle down with one person permanently.
One night after a pack run they both get drunk and make love and Kade winds up pregnant. Knowing that Logan only loves him like a brother and feeling that Logan deserves better Kade runs away and struggles to survive. After a violent encounter Logan tracks Kade down to bring him home and offers Kade almost everything his heart desires.
The story is well written in Kade's POV. I love all of the characters. There is quite a bit of angst and heartache throughout, but it has a HEA ending. I count this story as one of my all time wolf shifter favorites.
2020 = 4 stars 2024 = 1 star added for good reread
Rated on the more generous "Mpreg Scale." This genre is a favorite of mine, but few stories go beyond mediocrity. In fact, most don't even reach that level.
It may not be a literary great, but it was entertaining and kept my interest, with nary a dull moment. The satisfying ending includes an epilogue.
The miscommunication trope is heavily used, with the beta/omega lying and running away repeatedly. Thankfully, events move quickly, and the angst is manageable. While one part was difficult to read (shared in the summary), everything afterward made up for it.
MCs: (Kade's POV only) 🐺 Logan is the pack alpha. 🐺 Kade is the pack beta/omega.
Setting: Cherokee, South Carolina
★ Logan is a true alpha. Many times, alphas are watered down and act more like betas. It made sense for him to be so angry with Kade. Still, even when upset, his self-control kept him from completely losing it. He clearly cared, despite Kade's foolish actions.
Kade is similar to Jory from A Matter of Time.
🔥 The few sex scenes are just how I like them: steamy with enough details to show their lovemaking, without being porny.
Logan and Kade have been friends since childhood, pack alpha and beta like their fathers before them. When Kade confesses his love, Logan gently declines. He only feels brotherly love and doesn't want to ruin their friendship. He dreams of children, while Kade is a player who's never had a serious relationship.
On the night of a full moon run, Kade feels off, like he's getting sick. He has a big appetite, and Logan says his scent smells like sex. Unknowingly, Kade is in heat. At the bonfire, Kade gets drunk and comes onto Logan. Kade wakes up to find them naked and tangled together. Fearing Logan will blame him, he goes home. He plans to lie If Logan asks any questions.
The two avoid each other, acting as if nothing happened. Kade then experiences morning sickness and is shocked to learn he’s pregnant. Turns out, he’s part beta and part omega. (There's a long, boring reason for this.) Used to being thought of as a strong beta, he'll now be considered a weak omega. Too ashamed to face the pack, he runs away to Virginia.
Seven months later, broke and nearly full term, Kade seeks help at Family Omega and Children’s Services. When an upset alpha starts shooting, Kade gets his gun and shoots him. The story hits the news, and Logan finds him. Logan is angry, but Kade explains why he ran. He lies about the baby's father, not wanting to trap Logan or face the pack as an omega. Logan takes him back to the pack, where other than one member, they treat him well.
They make love in a tender scene. Kade remains insecure, despite Logan's loving care.
Chapter 7/10 – The hardest part to read: After having a baby girl, Kade learns he can’t have more children. He lies to Logan, claiming he never loved him and that the baby’s real father wants him back. He does this to provoke Logan into letting him go, fearing the traditional pack’s judgment and knowing that Logan, as an alpha, needs a son.
Fifteen months later, Kade is living in Atlanta and working at an omega bar. Logan finds him there while looking for a runaway teen. He stops Kade's boss from assaulting him and takes him home. There, he sees his daughter who looks just like him. He's furious that Kade lied to him yet again. Logan gives him ten minutes to pack.
Kade realizes he was wrong and that he acted crazy. Believing Logan only wanted friendship, he let his hurt and anger over his situation cloud his judgment. His bitterness made him feel justified in running away.
🤗 From here on out, I really enjoyed the story.
Logan vents his fury at being betrayed. Angry sex follows, during which Kade is marked all over to show he belongs to Logan.
La Esse Subplot: The alpha Kade shot earlier is part of a Mexican wolf pack seeking revenge. On the way home, they’re ambushed. Logan is grazed by a silver bullet. Kade falls off a mountain and is presumed dead. Both are rescued by Logan’s pack.
Kade wakes up to find his dad caring for him. In a touching scene, his dad tells Kade that the goddess doesn't make mistakes, and he's the perfect mate for Logan. He may one day be able to have more children.
♥️ Logan and Kade reconcile, sharing a run and their feelings. Six months later, Logan plans a bigger home for Carrie and their growing family. Kade will once again be the pack beta. More in love than ever, Logan chases him into the bedroom.
Runaway Omega is told from Kade's point of view and Shannon West has done an amazing job at making his emotions overwhelmingly tangible. His confusion and hurt are so strong they emanate from the pages.
My heart felt for Kade, because I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to have everything you believed about yourself change over night. The poor guy has lived his life KNOWING who he was, only to be forced to reconstruct his reality. He had to go from having the certainty of a definite purpose to feeling meaningless and aimless.
It was hard to witness how utterly devastating it's been for Kade to discover that a genetic glitch changed the course of his life. So the story is focused on his attempt to make sense of his new conditions. He stumbles, he doubts his self worth and he makes a lot of mistakes, mostly because of his stubbornness. He was also so endearing in his crush for Logan, and their relationship was an entertaining kind of game of Kade running away and Logan bringing him back. Both of them full of doubts, afraid of putting their hearts fully on the line...to the point they risked loosing each other.
Runaway Omega was heartbreaking and sweet, full of tears and laughter, with a dash of danger, enough to spice up the story. I loved Kade, Logan and their little Carrie and I can't recommend their story enough.
I don’t know what happened here. I usually love Ms. West’s books but for some reason this one fell flat for me. Maybe it was due to the lack of world building, or possibly the lack of character development (more-so Logan).
Thank goodness it started to get a bit better in the end. What did confuse me, and never explained, was it seemed that being a wolf shifter had no advantages. By this I mean the contradiction regarding immunity and healing. Just was a bit off to me.
Oh my god, this was so demeaning! Logan was such a dick and had to always dictate everything while Kade just took it. Kade also made me super mad....Sometimes you could think head his own brain but as soon as Logan showed up, he completely changed his attitude and just submissively said yes to everything. Grow a backbone buddy. IT WAS HORRIBLE.
Rating: 2.5 stars This book started off good. I didn’t think Kade was the smartest tool in the shed, but I felt somewhat sorry for him. That changed as the story progressed. I just didn’t understand some of his choices. Then there was Logan. I didn’t understand his actions either. I was glad he and Kade had a preexisting relationship because I just wouldn’t have bought into the HEA otherwise. Another thing that really bothered me was the angry sex that occurred towards the end of the book. I’m not a big fan and it bothered me. That’s what really brought my rating down. I really wish the author would have taken a different path with the book.
This was really bad. The dialogue was horrible and clunky, the miscommunication between the characters was 100% forced and not believable, oh, and also????
Logan was like an asshole and super abusive?? I kept reading because I wanted Kade to stand up for himself and he never did??? And still fell in love with Logan? Also, like, trigger warning for a basically-rape scene??
I liked this novel a lot. It contained all of the elements Shannon West does well: possessive alpha, rebellious omega, humour. More of a straight up story and not as much world building that makes some of her other stories really charming. Still a good read.
A runaway omega after finding out he’s pregnant is always going to be one of my favorite tropes!!! This is just what I needed tonight, the perfect palate cleanser
The story felt disjointed it did not transition well. Yes Kade felt and believe that Logan did not feel the same but then that changed. But how and why the change? The story felt muddy and confusing just like Kade.
Dubious consent Emotionally and physically abusive alpha Lazy storyline Forced myself to finish this with no payoff Had a good premise but didn't come through
This was not good. I can see what it was trying to be, but it missed the mark. What came out was a highly toxic, abusive drama fest. At one point Logan actually slams Kade into the wall and Kade basically responds with “it could’ve been harder, I’m not that hurt.”
The characters were fickle and lacked depth. They’d say one thing, then come back later saying they never said it. A lot of the story was skipped over then told in past tense, like an afterthought.
That’s not even touching on the sexist undertones. I don’t think the author was trying to come off that way, but the way Kade was treated was cringe, especially by Logan. He called Kade stupid on multiple occasions, interrupted him, told him to shut up and controlled him with threat of force. Kade would brush it off every single time. The behavior was never rectified or even acknowledged as abhorrent. It was almost as if Kade felt like he deserved it. Just, no.

Runaway Omega is the first in the Runaway Omega series by author Shannon West. I really loved this book MM Paranormal is my favorite genre by far and this one has a ton of heart and soul in it.
Kade has run away from his pack. He is broke and applying for services. The clinic he is at is attacked. That is when his past catches up with him. He is alone, pregnant with his best friend’s baby.
Kade had always thought he was beta. He went into silent heat and that is when he found out he was Omega.
Logan the next Alpha of the pack tracks down Kade. Furious he would dare leave with no word. When he finds out why offers to marry him.
Both of these men are strong, loyal and need to learn trust. I loved the connection they have it is very organic and hot. I cannot wait for more from this series too, I love this series’ start and want more!
You'd think I'd like this more because the running away for the good for your significant other, except your significant other likes you too and chases after you, etc. etc. is SO MY THING, but ughhh, not this one. I actually liked the beginning, but too many time skips, there's a complete dearth of other characters, and the two characters you do end up knowing are both idiots and not cute idiots. Also the antagonists are super out there. 8| I also wanted more Kade and Logan interacting with one another in a regular setting and not... this... Kade also completely lost his backbone at some point. Oh well.
Yoooooo, Kade is fucking B.A.D.A.S.S. POINT. BLANK. PERIODT!
"I dropped the son-of-a-bitch where he stood!
I've been looking for badass Omegas ever since Mal in SEALing His Fate, who remains to this day, one of my all-time-fave Omegas. Most of the time Omegas are portrayed as demure almost meek, looking for an Alpha to save them, but I want to see more of the Omegas who can take down an Alpha in a fight, but still carry and nurture their little ones. I think the dichotomy for me is even more appealing than the "damsel-in-distress" Omega...
Maybe I've just read too many of that story... back to this one:
I thought Kade was going to Shut. The. Shit. Down. (Sucker for badass Omegas here 🙃) until that first scene I wanted to shake some sense into him!!!
*sigh, we can't be all perfection... I guess 80% will do!
Ok sooooo that scene in the hotel room... yeaaaahhhhh. Idk how I feel about that... I think I get where the author was trying to go with it, but given their history up to this point, who Logan has been AND the events immediately preceding the "entry" for lack of a better descriptor, I think, for me, it gave me hives. And I think maybe for me, this is where Logan loses me.
Like, there weren't many redeeming qualities about him before this point, but this, for me is the point of no return, regardless of Kade's reponse. .
Soooo... fin. But idk how I feel.
I liked Kade. I liked what he tried to do for himself. I think he'd have been successful and I wish he had had the time to be successful; I believe the events would have unfolded differently had he been given the chance to discover that he could stand on his own. I get why he folded, and I don't even blame him for it. I even get why he would see no wrong in the situation except what he deems to be his faults towards Logan. I loved his baby... I'm a sucker for mpregs and MM with baby tropes.
I'm upset that Kade's strength got lost in the fluff of everything else and the shitstorm that is Logan. I believe the author could have done better by him. He does not need to be put down in order for the story to be told and still be impactful. I would wager that the story would have been that much more impactful if he still retained his strength as a Beta and the strength and ingenuity he displayed while living away from Logan, even when he was around him, because at the heart of all this, what keeps getting lost in translation, is that Kade is Kade regardless of the orientation assigned at puberty. He remains the same with the same abilities he had before the new revelation. His new found ability to carry in bring forth life is just extras... the window dressing so to speak. It shouldn't have changed Logan's response to him if they truly had been as close as they had been before. And I think maybe that was one of my biggest disappointments with Logan as his friend, and the Alpha of the pack, Kade's revelation was an opportunity to step up to the plate and be the change needed in their shifter community, especially because he kept saying he doesn't care what other packs think... instead, he missed the boat!
On some level I even understand Logan. I don't agree with him. I detest his actions ➡️ to me, they are unforgivable. I get why his immediate response was as OTT as it was, mine probably would have been as well, given the mindset surrounding omegas and the circumstances surrounding their whole existence, and the dynamic that they used to have as friends. I get the anger and the hurt and betrayal. What I don't agree with is his actions in response to that, coupled with what he said in the moment and thereafter.
I guess we shall read the next one to see what happens.
So ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ confused stars because of the alpha who on a scale of 1 to 10 I liked in this order: Before I met him: 4 Right after meeting him: 6 That scene at the hotel and the events thereafter: negative 100 ♾ Epilogue: 3 ➡️ ONLY because of what he agreed to, without a fight For. Fucking. Once. HALLEFUCKINGLUJAH!!!!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I am so torn on my feelings for this book. There were so many reasons to dislike both Kade and Logan. But, for some reason I just had to finish reading it. The book begins after Kade left his pack. We are given flashbacks so we know what led to his decision. When Logan finds him and brings him back home, all the lies were a bit much.
Kade leaves after his complications giving birth and 15 months pass before he’s found again. Logan runs into Kade again and rescues him from his handsy boss. When taking Kade home, Logan discovers that the baby looks exactly like him and is furious with Kade for keeping him from his daughter.
There is drama when Logan tries to bring Kade home. The book has an HEA but it was hard earned but, would have been sooo much less complicated if both men had communicated.
***** POV… first person (Kade)
Standalone or series… book 1 in series CAN be read as standalone
This is the first book in (The wolves of Rocky Ridge )
This was a great start to a new paranormal/Shifter Romance series I loved the spice of life in this book both the Alpha and his Beta/Omega were very interesting and complicated characters . Both of our main characters have loved each other since childhood but thought that it couldn't work because one was the Alpha and the other his Beta . These two went through so much misunderstandings miscommunication insecurity but through all that they never stopped loving each other I'm looking forward to the next book in this series .
So this book.............. The MC runs away from home because he ends up pregnant with his Alpha's baby. It's a shocking experience for someone who always considered themselves a Beta. Now the ML, I wish we would have heard his side of the story. Even after he claimed the MC, he never really told him how he felt. Even when they had sex the 2nd time, he blamed it on getting it out of their systems. Which was weird but I'm like alright he doesn't know how he feels yet. But then getting to the end of the book and realizing his feelings. I felt mind blown with the MC. So on further note, I actually liked the story. There was a little bit too much filler but it was fine.
It quickly turned into every other a/b/o story where the omega runs off because they assume everyone hates them without communicating with their alpha. There was nothing in Logan’s mannerisms that said he wouldn’t want a child but for some reason Kade decided otherwise. I also don’t like how Logan seemingly raped Kade when he found Kade the second time. I say “seemingly” because Kade said he was in pain but enjoyed it. Anyway, it wasn’t horrible but I would have like to read about an omega who was more level headed.
At first, feel bad for Kade because of Logan's harsh words to him and I understand the needs of him to runaway from Logan and his pack but after read more chapters, I kinda hate him tho'. Kade is selfish man, made stupid and reckless decisions and never thought of how Logan's feel or his dad. In my opinion, this story is kinda incomplete. I need Logan's pov too not only Kade and how about the Mexican's pack. It left unanswered. Maybe in the next book, the mystery will be revealed.
What stood out (taking in consideration I've completed over 2000 m/m books) = Nothing positive stood out or was particularly memorable.
Mood Type : Appeal to those looking for... (and /or those who should avoid) Appeal to those who like stereotyping, controlling alphas, selfish omegas who thought they were betas; that run instead of fighting the stereotyping for all because just too insecure + horrified / embarrassed at being an Omega.
Warnings = Characters TSTL (Too stupid to live)
HFN/HEA = I guess
Series Notes = 1st *Reading on? Absolutely NOT *Reading back to back? N/A *Can be easily read without the previous? N/A
Rating Notes = (SubPlots, thoughts, etc... )
I almost stopped at 57%. I never DNF a book, but this was awfully close.
At first, willing to chalk up the m/c bolting to defensiveness, mmaturity, and stupid testosterone etc... But all it does is cycle and repeat stupidity for purely contrived miscommunication and again defensiveness.
A lot of the issues come from being told stuff instead of being shown, for example - never seeing their friendship. This story would have been better served if time had been spent on flashbacks of their friendship, instead of the extra long flashback of only the sex night. They never felt close.
It was very repetitive in actions and self-monolog along with eye-roll inducing to the point I thought my eye ball might get stuck.
Timeline confusing especially at last bar because why hadn't Diego already done something?
That I had to make notes in the middle of reading about all these things explains the lack of engagement I experienced.
Others focused on the controlling Alpha, but based on Werewolf lore (and suspension of belief) I was less concerned by that, because if someone took my child after running twice; even though never giving then reason to doubt me outside of not appearing to return their romantic feelings - then I too would be angry and questioning of their ability to make decisions.
Both characters end up being relatively unlikable.
I could go on, because unfortunately there were multiple other issues, but I won't. I've spent enough time on this story. I would like to have included some positives, but it was a struggle to think of any. The only things I could come up with is both were great with the baby. The Dad was supportive, and I did actually finish!
*************** Below is my philosophy on reviewing! *************** 1. I try to take into account and note common pet peeves noted by other readers 2. "Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation. (What is brain candy? Publishing industry 's version of pop music - Typically: formulaic, from a prolific author published often and quickly (like monthly), things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc..) It has its uses: to pass time when tired, on the beach, etc... The problem comes when "brain candy" is unexpected or even disguised. 3. Why rate the blurbs? : Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it; I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb. 4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing: Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2022) was a 3.60 average for 1715 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 800 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads. 5. I'm really confused by reviews that consist of just 2 to 3 sentences - with no explanation or evidence. I'm even more baffled when it receives "likes". I'm unsure of how it is useful to others on whether or not to pick a book, for example: "It was a fun read". Umm okay... What made it fun? For that matter, what do you define as fun? Do not even get me started on people who have rated over a 1000 books with a 4.99 rating average. How is that helpful? And there's is absolutely no way that every book is above average great / 5 star read. Why even bother to rate books? 6. I am not a writer nor a wordsmith, but I am a passionate reader. I joined the m/m group years ago, but I mostly lurk. I like to ask questions, debate, and quite possibly play Devil's advocate - which is hard to do online, with unknown people - to whom you are also an unknown- and no body language is available to convey intent. Plus, true debates seems to be a lost art form where respect and even friendliness can be shown between those with fundamentally different opinions.
