I am always on the look out for great shifter series to try so when the cover of this book caught my attention and I read the blurb I decided to give it a go.

At just 15% I was feeling pulled into this world already.... initially, it was reminding me a tiny bit of Karina Espinosa's Mackenzie Grey Origin's Series which is a huuuge compliment as I truly adore that series & the following one. Jinx kind of reminds me of Mackenzie! ....could Jacob be Jinx' very own Bash? I did discover before reading that this book/series is set in the same world as the other series written by D. Fischer but I couldn’t really find any specific information for which books or series to read first so I dove right into this one.

There is a bit of a backstory that is referred to quite often, “The Realms War” where all the supernaturals fought and sustained heavy losses in their packs, covens etc. I don’t think you absolutely have to have read the books about the Realms War first, prior to this book as the incidents referred to in connection with the Realms War are well explained. I will say I do feel I would like to read the both the series set around the Realms War and the Cloven Pack Series too.

My favourite character is Jinx Whitethorn with her independent, kick ass, stubborn attitude. Jinx belonged to the Lotus Coven of witches and grew up within it until she realised she was a witch with no magic, making her an anomaly, the odd one out. Jinx left the Coven’s home which means leaving their protection but at the same time she is leaving behind the judgmental, inquisitive stares of the other witches. Jinx has moved in to the flat that is above the Be Deviled bar that is owned and run by Cinderson Robin’s a shifter who is part of the local Riva Pack. Things have taken a weird turn for Jinx lately as it seems some strange group, or pack is hunting her. At first, Jinx thought it maybe just coincidence but then she noticed all these men/beasts had the same tattoo like mark on them. Even stranger is whilst fighting these assailants Jinx seems to blackout, and cannot remember how the fight progressed or ended.
Jinx best friend from within the coven is Sara, who is the daughter of Jamie, Jinx’ mother’s best friend also. Sara is a good, supportive friend to Jinx and doesn’t care whether Jinx has magic or not. There is a point in the book where Jamie kind of asks/warns Jinx not to involve her daughter in whatever she is mixed up in. I think perhaps there could be further trouble for Jinx in the future with some of the members of the coven. The witches seem to see things in a very black and white way and the fact Jinx has no magic, to them means Jinx is not one of them. Thankfully for Jinx her friend Sara doesn’t think like that at all and is willing to face anything side by side with her best friend. Sara encourages Jinx to speak to her own mother to ask questions about her heritage from her father’s line. Jinx ends up asking her mother about her father as that is clearly where she gets her Native American looks. Eventually her mother, Tabatha reveals that she really loved Adriel, Jinx father but witches are not supposed to fall in love, they are supposed to be lone women bringing up their daughters. Sadly, the day Tabatha revealed to Adriel that she was pregnant he was killed in a mystery car accident. Jinx also learns that her father was also a supernatural, he was a Shaman, so perhaps that is where her gifts lie…..could that be linked to her blacking out?

I also adored Cinderson’s character, so “happy go lucky”, such an easy going, kind of guy but at the same time hiding his own heartbreak and heartache at the loss of his sister Allie in the Realms War. Also still upset at the loss of Allie, is Jacob, the Alpha of the Riva Pack. Jacob is involved with Evo, Alpha of the Cloven pack who also lives in the area. They have to keep an eye on rogue werewolves and encourage them to learn to live within a pack, if they cannot do this they need to “take care of them”. It’s whilst looking into some shifter deaths that Jacob and Evo realise the dead shifters are part of the Bane pack. Wice Bane is not a well liked, shifter in either of his forms. In fact, the Bane Pack are known to work as mercenaries for whoever has the money to pay for their services.

It turns out that Jinx has what could be described as her very own brand of magic that she has through her father’s bloodline. Jacob decides to take Jinx under the protection of his pack until they can work out why the Bane pack is after Jinx and until Jinx can control her new found powers. Unfortunately for Jacob he decides that kidnapping Jinx is a good way to get to talk to her, and to say this irritates Jinx is an understatement. Jinx is used to being independent and makes her opinions and views well known which causes friction within the Riva Pack and Jinx. Jinx does prove how tough she is and the fact she can take care of herself and soon integrates with the majority of the pack members. There are also some great descriptive sparring scenes between Jinx and the Riva pack. Towards the latter part of the book when Jinx is once again in danger because of the Bane Pack there are some great fight scenes too.

I loved the description of the Lotus Coven garden that is only accessible in its true and wonderful form for witches. Witches can gain access to this garden because they have given a drop or as it is described in the book a bead of their blood to it. There is a small clearing separating the vegetation and a pentagram that is outlined in brick with a circle surrounding it. Each triangle of the pentagram has a different shade of flowers, white for the earth realm, red for the demon realm, purple for the dream realm, yellow for the guardian realm and blue for the death realm. The description is so good you can almost visualise how this would look.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing reading this book were Oh wow what a great start to another potentially fantastic paranormal, shifter series!
Certainly eager to read more about Jinx, Jacob, Cinder, Sara, the rest of the Riva pack.....multiple shifter packs, plus covens, and Native American shaman as well as vampires being hunted at.

To sum up on one hand I could honestly go on and on about this book but on the other hand it’s difficult to talk about without revealing too much about the book as I certainly do not want to spoil the reading experience. I truly loved the beautiful necklace that Jinx has that belonged to her father, though it turns into a bit of a mixed gift. A connection to her father, yet something the Bane Pack desperately want and don’t care how they get it. I am seriously looking forward to hopefully learning much more about Jinx heritage and what her gifts and powers will be, as well as where her potential relationship with Jacob will go. In amongst all the pack hierarchy, the witch laws and fighting there are hints at things that may be coming in the future. I am hoping for more things happening around the Be Deviled and I’m already pairing off another witch and wolf couple. So. after all my rambling and rattling on I would say this series and author are going on my “must read” lists. Other series as well as the Mackenzie Grey series’ by Karina Espinosa I would compare this book to, are Jessica McClain series by Amanda Carlson and the Women Of The Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. I have also seen this series compared to Alpha & Omega and the Mercy Thompson series’ but having only read Cry Wolf I haven’t added it to my, “to compare to list”.

What a fun read. Jinx is the kind of female main character I can picture as a best friend. Strong, sarcastic and a take no crap persona. In the search to establish herself outside of the coven she begins to learn there is more to her lack of magic than she could ever imagine.

Jacob is similar to other shifter males I've read about with his alpha character and the connection he finds with Jinx. His past, compassion and sexual restraint makes him stand out. This isn't a read that focuses on the sexual. That was the biggest difference from other paranormal romances that I noticed. I utterly enjoyed that. Not that I don't enjoy a good smutty smut scene but sometimes it ends up overtaking a paranormal romance. This is action packed with a twist of tribal mythology that I really enjoy.

I'd recommend this series to shifter romance lovers and anyone whose looking to try this genre. Thank you to the author and her PA for the opportunity to read and review for an honest and unbiased opinion.

I really enjoyed this book!. Jinx was a great character, trouble follows her wherever she goes.. she is a witch with no magic, being chased down by a group of mysterious werewolves.. Jacob is the Alpha of the local pack and he meets Jinx after he is suspicious that she had a hand in a couple werewolf murders. Jacob kidnaps her. Which we know will end well..
Jinx now has to discover some things about herself, and some secrets about her father with the help of Jacob and his pack.. Jacob has vowed to help keep her safe from the wolves after her.
I thoroughly enjoyed Jinx and Jacobs story.. they both have some major issues they are trying to work through.
Im definitely going to check out the next book!!

Jinx Whitethorn….nomen es omen

„The Trouble with Beast“, first installment in the “Howl for the Damned” Series by D. Fischer, combines fast-paced action and wonderful depicted characters to a very enjoyable urban fantasy story.

Jinx Whitethorn has a problem… or three… First, these attackers coming out of nowhere, then the fainting spells at the most inopportune moment, and finally a propensity to wake in unintended places with no recollection whatsoever of how she ended up there. For good measure just add the fact that she is a witch with not magic of her own whatsoever…. At least something seems to be working out for her… she is obviously dodging her attackers just fine… if she only could make a rhyme of it all. Thus, for now, she contents herself with helping at Cinder’s bar, her friend and landlord (not that she ever makes the rent in time, or at all…)

Jacob Trent has another set of problems of his own, as Alpha of the Riva Pack he has taken on the responsibility to fight the rogue shifters that are attacking his territory and slowly decimating his pack, while trying to ignore the need to find a suitable mate, in spite of the not so subtle nudges of his pack members.

Determined to solve their problems, Jinx unearths the family secrets (just to end up wishes they have been remaining buried forever), while Jacob, in the course of trying to solve the rogue murders, stumbles right in the middle of Jinx secret.

It is a perfect storm, Jacob's “solution” to the situation is to abduct Jinx… let us just say it was probably not his best moment….

The plot develops nicely, the chemistry between Jacob and Jinx could really been cut with a knife 😉. The rogue murders storyline is gripping with some unexpected twists, the romantic thread wholly enjoyable to the point of hilarity… Jinx is a wonderful character, strong in spite of all shortcomings, while Jacob is really just an Alpha out of his deep, at the end…... no! not spoiler here… get the book… you won’t be disappointed, not by a long shot 😊

D. Fischer writing style is fast-paced and combines action and romantic elements into an absolute superb urban fantasy story, which absolute adorable and credible main characters and very good crafted secondary ones. This is the onset to a series, and I just cannot wait to read the next installment.

Don't pass this one up

I wasn't sure what to expect going in. I will be honest when I saw the comparison to the Mercy series I laughed.
I'm not laughing anymore.
Fischer brought her A-game
I don't give a lot of 5-star 🌟reviews.
A story has to truly entrance me, engage all my emotions.
It has to keep me up well past the witching hour.
The trouble with beasts did that.
I truly felt a part of the pack.
The world-building was stunningly crafted.
I felt the rain beating on my skin, the heat from the sun warming my face.
The story line was easy to follow
Jinx is a witch with no magic. Never quite feeling like she fits she strikes out from the coven to find herself. This lands her living above Cinder's bar.
Let's just say life from there forward is full of one near miss after another.
The cast members - Loved, Loved them!
Jinx - I think her name pretty much sums up her life
A sassy little bundle of dynamite
Jacob is the local pack Alpha. He is strict but fair -
He has some past ghosts that haunt him
Cinder has taken Jinx under his wing he is a bit of a player
Glenda is the grandma who takes no lip
Reese is the packs' doctor who has an unrequited crush on a certain alpha
Amelia is the psychologist who is trying to mend the emotional wounds the war left behind
Sara is a witch and Jinx's BFF
There are quite a few more characters but you get the idea
A well-rounded cast that compliments the story and each other

There are a few small scene errors and some minor issues that pulled me from the story - normally yes, that would knock down my rating right away. But when I stumble across a story that truly captivates me and leaves me hesitant to close the pages I make exceptions.
That is what a fictional world should do, yes?
Keep me captivated, provide a chance to be someone or somewhere else?

I will be moving on to the next in series (it is in KU)

In this book we get to meet Jacob, Cinder and Jinx. Jacob is an Alpha of the The Riva Pack.

Jinx, she is a witch with no magic? Well, kinda? Okay, so Jinx is the type of girl that can kick your ass and look good doing it. She trains hard and fights harder. She can defend herself from the most fearsome guys out there. She is smart, sexy and kind. Her instincts are always spot on. She is being hunted and she doesn’t know why, yet. She befriends Cinder who is the owner of the bar she lives above. Her Coven, the Lotus Coven, well her mom’s coven is not too accepting it seems of her. And with this I felt so bad for her. LIke she wasn't sure where she fit in and it felt like her mom, well, like her mom pushed her away. She seemed to be on her own in more ways than just physically.

Jacob, with the trauma he suffered during the Realms War. What tragedy his pack suffered, what they still suffer. It’s so sad. I would love to learn more of that war. Taking care of the pack or who is left. Cinder is a part of that pack. Jacob is intelligent and caring but cautious. Suffering from PTSD he does his best to help all who need it.

Who is hunting Jinx and why? When Jinx and Jacob meet, sparks fly. When Jacob learns that Jinx is involved in the murders of the shifter he immediately gets involved as it is his territory. Taking her to his home is just the beginning.

In this story you will have all the drama, the tension and the need to keep reading. You will not want to put this read down. I absolutely loved this book. I highly recommend this as your next read.

Go get lost in this book tonight!

Plot - 4 out of 5
Characters - 2.5 out of 5
World Building - 4 out of 5
Writing Style - 3 out of 5
OverAll - 3.25 out of 5

First Reaction: Magic-less witch + Sexy but tortured Alpha shifted = A whole lot of missed potential

Jinx Whitethorn is a witch born without magic who is being hunted by an unknown group of shifters. Jacob Trent, the Alpha of the Riva Pack, is also dealing with his own demons. Mainly the loss of his friend Allie who died during the Realms War (a part of the previous series which I hadn't read). Jacob all but stumbles into Jinx's problems when he finds two dead shifters in the alley behind a packmate's bar. With only two possible suspects Jinx and her witch friend Sara, Jacob has no choice but to get involved. After all, he does have a pack to protect.

Here is what I liked about this book:

-D. Fischer does a decent job with world-building and doesn't solely rely on the features commonly used when characterizing supernatural creatures and worlds.

-Fischer also employs humor in a way that doesn't hinder the more intense scenes throughout the book.

-Jinx, while being both magic-less and petite is not just adept at protecting herself. But is also a very skilled fighter to the point that she can win a sparring match against Jacobs Beta.

-The inclusion of Jacob suffering from PTSD is a genuine possibility that Fischer does a good job flushing out.

Here is what I didn't like about this book:

-Behavioral and time inconsistencies. The characters are all over the place, often changing their views at the flip of the page (quite literally). There is also the issue of a switch in the timeline with every switch of point of view. These shifts could be anywhere for a few hours to an entire day. Both of these inconsistencies left me feeling off-kilter and kept pulling me out of the story.

-There is a slight shift in the type of vocabulary seen throughout the book, which sometimes made the narrative and dialogue sound stilted. Which also pulled me out of the book.

-While Jinx is portrayed as an independent young woman, she is also incredibly obnoxious and disrespectful. Seen particularly through how callously treats her friend Cinder even though he's the sole reason she is not currently homeless and hungry.

-Some of the little stuff doesn't add up: Jinx doesn't have, and actual paying job but can afford to go to the Gym?

-Jacob is not much of a leader. I'm not saying that because he's suffering from PTSD but because his primary solution for dealing with problems is to react then think things through. He's the shoot first and asks questions later kind of guy, which leads to some unnecessary tension in the book.

Would I recommend this book? Probably not to the average person. I know some people who would read and enjoy this book just based on the plot and interesting take on the supernatural world. But I also know individuals who would feel unsatisfied with the book, solely because of the lack of attention and physical book space given to Jinx and Jacob or Jinx and the pack while they are forming a relationship.

Unfortunately, this book didn't make my top five best reads of the week, but it was still worth the read, and I will more than like read the second one in the series. If only to find out what happens next.

3.5/5 Stars for The Trouble With Beasts!

My rating scale simplified:
5 - Loved! Loved everything about it
4 - Liked! Liked mostly everything about it
3 - Liked but...
2 - Didn’t like/not for me
1 - DNF

I recommend if you like:
Paranormal storyline
Paranormal romance
Sassy and tough female characters
Sext beauty baldies

Things I loved about The Trouble With Beasts:
The story line! I haven’t read a lot of Paranormal, but I really enjoyed the story and Jinx’s journey of discovery! I thought certain parts were compelling and the alternative viewpoints of Jinx and Jacob were good. I loved Jinx as a main character, she’s sassy and tough and I love that. I appreciate how she’s tough despite her “lack of magic” and makes a way for herself without it, and her take no crap personality.

The but...
Overall, I did enjoy, however the writing at some parts was so so. There were definitely some cheesy lines and moments that don’t really do it for me, especially with the main characters. I would have like more between them, and more drawn out, in depth development of their relationship.

Despite the “but...” I’m definitely interested in continuing the series and reading more from the author!

I really enjoyed this series. I love Jinx as a character in general. I understand her and I feel for her which shows how well she is written. I also love that she is a little sassy-pants. I love Jacob too. I also feel for him and I think the descriptions of his PTSD are beautifully done so that someone who has never dealt with that, can still relate and understand the trauma he is dealing with on a fairly constant basis.
The story progresses naturaly and there is a very nice flow to the tale. I like how it unfolds without hitting you with everything at once. I love that each character will slowly build into a cast that you love.
Great story!! I totally recommend it and I can't wait for book 2.

While this is a standalone series, I do think it would have been helpful for me to have read the Rise of the Realms series first, just so I had some back story. So that's my warning. Having said that, it wasn't a huge hinderance and I was easily able to follow this story. I just like to have the full picture. LOL

Jinx Whitehorn, a witch without a gift, has a heritage even she doesn't realize, and it's something she may never have fully understood had she not gone head-to-head with Jacob Trent, the alpha of the Riva pack. She has some evil men after her, and when Jacob vows to protect her and help her learn about where she truly comes from, his entire pack is at risk. Yet, there's something about her that has him turning his world upside down, and secrets and magic could mean the end of everything.

I found the entire story fascinating, especially the Native American references. I believe even though authors take some poetic license when it comes to history and research, there are times when the reader can tell how deeply the author dug to come up with a believable story. This is one of those times. The plot was exciting. The characters were captivating. And the story was enchanting as well as exciting. I'm on the edge of my seat in anticipation for the next book in the series.

It begins with a nightmare that turns out to be all too real. A gruesome trail of dead bodies that seem to tell one story while simultaneously contradicting it. This action filled story is also a tale of self-discovery and redemption, with a bit of tender, burgeoning relationship type romance that stays clean.

Jinx is the kind of girl who makes her self at home, raids your fridge, and gets around to introductions later. Fiercely independent, she makes her own way - until she starts blacking out. Despite he way if wiggling herself into people's lives, she's never really belonged. Jacob is the stoic leader, dealing with the harsh aftermath of a devastating war, trying to protect his people - and himself.

This is book 1 in a spin off series, but can be read enjoyably without having read any other books in this world. Fair warning, if you haven't read any of Fischer's other books you will probably want to after reading this one!

This is the first book I have read by the author and I will definitely be reading more. If a book could be described by a television show, it would be reminiscent of the new drama FBI: Most Wanted with a paranormal twist. Filled with vivid descriptions and stellar characters, the pages just keep turning as readers try, along with the female lead, to ascertain why she is being hunted. Jinx is a witch with no power who has been sent away from her coven. Not one to be left unaware, she grew up learning how to fight and protect herself. When she befriends Cinder, the owner of a bar and member of the Riva Wolf Pack, she gets more than she bargains for. Jacob is the alpha of the pack who is leery of Jinx and is determined to get to the bottom of things without letting her get under his skin. This is one captivating story that effortlessly blends references of Native American culture with paranormal flair. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.

Wow, this is the first book I read of this author and I will say this book was great. It kept you wanting to read to see what will happen next. We have some mystery, action, and suspense. Jinx is a witch with no power. She blacks out and her mother won't answer her why. She left her coven and living on top of a bar that Cinder owns. Hoping to find a place to fit in, since she has not magic. There is someone after her and she don't know who. Jacob is alpha of his pack and Cinder belongs to the pack. There has been murders and he is trying to find out who. What will Jinx do to protect herself? What will Jacob do to find out who is doing it? What will happen when they meet? Will he find out her secret? I received a free copy for my honest review.

I don’t always read shifter series; too many are poorly written. This however is a series sculpted into life by a master storyteller. No matter the genre if it is written by D. Fischer, it is worth reading!

Meet Jinx Whitethorn, a witch without magic. She left the coven of her birth, unwelcome with no magical talents. But that is the least of her current troubles. She is being hunted by a group of shifters with a brand on their necks.

Jinx has no idea who they are or why they are out to kill her. In fact she doesn’t know how she has remained alive until now. At each moment she thinks she will certainly die, she blacks out, only to come to herself later in a different place.

Jinx doesn’t know what is wrong with her and has no one to turn to for help. She doesn’t want to endanger her closest friend, another witch, and she doesn’t know if she can trust the shifter who lets her crash above his bar. He is a shifter after all even if he doesn’t sport a brand on his neck.

Will Jinx unravel the mystery of the branded shifters who pursue her?

This world and these characters that D. Fischer has built is flawless. Jinks Whitethorn is the perfect expression dynamite comes in small packages. She is a magicless witch who for some unknown reason, has someone after her and she doesn't know why. Her coven has pretty much abandoned her due to her unwitchyness. Luckily for her she has befriended Cinder, a bar owner who happens to be a shifter. And can we talk about his alpha, like just all around sexy, brooding perfection. When these men attack her she blacks out, they end up dead, and she ends up safe. While Jinks has honed her body and fights skills, she shouldn't be able to do the damage to them that has been done

This is the first book I have read by author D. Fischer and it certainly will not be my last! I was pleasantly surprised at how easily and quickly her writing style, character build-up and story-line foundation hooked me in. I actually got myself into trouble with the Mrs. the first day I started reading this book because I lost track of time and forgot to get anything out for dinner, let alone do any of the laundry we had piled up 😆 The Trouble With Beasts is full of kick-ass girl power, smoldering fantasy and paranormal action that will leave you wanting more! I know I am very much looking forward to the next two books in the series!

DNF - Quit at 24%.
I haven't read the previous series that this was splintered off of, so that may have not helped my opinion of this book, as the world building wasn't there in this one. I couldn't decide if this was some sort of dystopian type of world, or? None the less, it left me a bit disoriented in the story. Enough to get me disinterested. It didn't help that I really didn't like the main character, Jinx. She just seemed too obnoxious for my tastes. It didn't help that she seemed to have loose morals when it comes to one night stands. Add in the shrouded mystery of her missing time, & her relationship with the so called friend that she just "uses", never bothering to give money to him for drinks or her use of his apartment, though he mentions it to her a few times, she ignores him or blows him off & still expects him to give her food & drinks in the bar for free, and look after her. Not any kind of friend I'd want around. So the meeting with the alpha, Jacob, just didn't resonate with me, nothing enough to see her change her behaviors. No, I couldn't stomach reading more about her. Needless to say, I won't be continuing on with the series.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Wolf shifters and witch’s what more can you ask for?

Another amazing book by the talented D Fischer. Wolf shifters, witch’s, and skinwalker’s what’s more to love in a fantasy book? How about romance and date bringing mates together and expanding on an already amazing set of books and characters we already love and adore! Can’t wait for book two <3

Fantastic read!

I loved this book. Although this is my first delve into this world, it didn't matter that I had joined up midway so to speak, it didn't spoil the story at sll. Now all I want to do is go back to the start and read them all. Can't wait to read the next instalment 😄

This is not my typical genre to read but this author has a very good way with adding personality into the characters. I enjoyed them very much. You'll love it if this is a genre you thrive on and if you're not I'm rather certain you will also enjoy this authors work just the same as I did.

Solid start

This is an interesting tale. However it’s more a part 1. It ends with much of the key plot unresolved. It does which narrative POV continuously which can be jarring.

Cute!

I love how they knew they were attracted to the each other and fought it until they couldn't deny it any longer.
