Dr. David Fazio is a maternity physician at Chicago-Western Medical Hospital. He is a handsome, divorced baby doctor who has more than his share of personal flaws. But Dr. Fazio has one good moral quality going for him: He is a pro-life obstetrician. In a state where late term abortions are now legal, he is currently being 'strongly encouraged' by the hospital to perform abortions to any patient requesting one.
Dr. Fazio has one other problem...he has horrific sleep issues and has been known to be a sleepwalker. He wakes up one morning with severe burns on his hands, while a family planning clinic one block away has burned down to the ground with casualties.
The authorities are now suspicious, as the 'Abortion Arsonist' is burning down clinics in Chicagoland, and Dr. Fazio has no clue who it is.
Every time Dr. Fazio sleeps, he has no concept of where he'll wake up or any memory of what damage he may have done the night before...

First and foremost, a large thank you to Reedsy Discovery and Edward Izzi for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

After recently discovering the work of Edward Izzi, I cannot get enough of his thrillers, which pull the reader into the middle of many heart-thumping scenarios. Dr. David Fazio is an obstetrician in Chicago with quite the reputation. His strong, pro-life views have made his work somewhat controversial, as he refuses to perform any abortive procedures on expectant mothers. This has been made even more controversial with the recent passage of a partial-birth abortion bill by the Illinois legislature. Not only is Fazio known for his strong views, but he is quite the Casanova, having gone through and disposed of many nurses on the maternity ward. His sexual prowess cannot be denied, but he has amassed enough enemies to fill the entire ward. When he wakes from a horrible nightmare, Fazio discovers that his hands are burnt. Not long thereafter, news emerges that a family planning clinic on the other side of the street is up in flames, with people still inside. Fazio’s history of sleeping issues, paired with his arrival in various locales without his knowledge does him no good, as he wonders what might be going on. One of the fire battalion chiefs and a detective with the CPD also begin to wonder if he might have played a role. When a second family planning clinic goes up in flames and Fazio is in the area, unsure how he made it to his car, he heads the list of suspects being considered the Abortion Arsonist. He has all the trademark signs and refuses to back away from his staunch pro-life views. But, with so many who wish to see him come tumbling down, might someone be trying to point the finger at the doctor? In a story that does not allow the reader any chance to catch their breath, Izzi spins a tale like no other. Recommended for those who love high-velocity thrillers, as well as the reader who can handle the politics of the abortion debate.

I cannot say enough about Edward Izzi, particularly his writing skills. Izzi lays the groundwork for a sensational story and builds on it from there, never taking a moment to lull the reader into some form of calm. David Fazio serves as a wonderful protagonist, even if he may not be loved by all readers. His strong views on the abortion question are bluntly presented throughout, but seem overshadowed by his desire to conquer all women with his wiles. Fazio comes from a strong Italian family, but seems more interested in bedding whomever crosse his path. Add to that, his horrible sleeping patterns and dreams that leave him wondering what he might have done. Fazio is surely in a conflicted state and one the reader will want to explore more thoroughly in this piece. Other characters serve to prop up Fazio’s various life choices throughout, while also adding depth to some of the plot lines that Edward Izzi seeks to explore. As with all the novels, there are some returning characters, though they play background roles, not impeding the flow of the story or the strength of the core characters. While all novels are stand-alones, the reader can get a little glimpse of some character development for these returning individuals, should they wish. The premise of the story was quite masterful, serving to address the abortion topic, sleep issues, and one man’s attempt to rise above both. Izzi mentioned having some loose ties to the Fazio character, which makes the story even stronger. I cannot wait to see what else is to come, for Edward Izzi has surely made a fan out of me. Brilliant work and so poignant!

Kudos, Mr. Izzi, for addressing so many hot-topic issues, if you pardon the pun. I love how I can get lost in the story and yet learn so much!

Quando Dormo is a mystery novel about an obstetrician with a sleeping disorder, who was strategically framed for multiple counts of arson in his home city of Chicago. He was disliked by many of the female nurses in the Chicago Western Medical Centre where he was the head obstetrician, as he was accused of being a womaniser. Dr David Fazio, the obstetrician, was of Italian descent and had strong Catholic beliefs. When the state made it legal to perform late-term pregnancy abortions, he made it no secret that he was "pro-life" and completely against the passing of the bill. He blatantly refused to perform abortions, especially late-term. This had become an issue because the new law was expected to be complied with in all medical centres and hospitals in Chicago. With all the pressure that Dr Fazio was under, his pre-existing medical condition developed to be more severe and his sleepwalking became more frequent. This caused many questions and suspicions to arise because the baby Dr was against abortions, and the fires all took place in abortion clinics. With his sleeping disorder, his pro-life beliefs and burnt hands on the morning of the first arson, Dr David Fazio must find a way to prove his innocence.

Quando Dormo, by Edward Izzi, was written in a mixture of first-person and third-person perspectives. The book begins on an intriguing note, where the protagonist was having a vivid dream of being in a burning building. Right off the bat, this opening scene caught my attention. I was compelled to know more. As the book proceeded, author Edward Izzi, carefully described each new character as they were introduced. He also gave relevant backstories as it pertained to each character and their role in the story. As far as character development goes, I applaud the author for a job well done.

Sprinkled between the pages of this book, was an Italian dialect and I was presented with a bit of Italian culture and traditions. Every chapter was given a subtitle, which clearly stated what the chapter would be about and the author stuck to the point. Many incidents took place throughout the novel and everyone was relevant to the plot. There was a lot of emotional display within the book itself, that allowed me to empathise with certain characters and to crawl into the headspace of some which made my reading experience easy and fluid. The way that the story was organised and told was great and I would admit that this is was a very enjoyable book, with clearly described sceneries and relatable characters.

It is worth mentioning that this book contains brief mentions of religion, that is, Christianity and Italian proverbs. There are also brief sexual encounters throughout and a brutal murder scene, near the end of the book. I would not recommend this book to children, but rather mid to late teens through adult. If you are sensitive to murder and sex, I would advise that you read this book with caution, as there are few mentions of those.

I rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars because I liked the story, despite the ending being a bit underwhelming to me. I also found quite a bit of grammatical errors which I thought that when the book was proofread, they should have been caught upon. With that being said, the thing that I liked the most about this book was that I could personally relate to each character because of the way the author presented them. The ending wasn't what I expected, which could be a good thing, but I really couldn't wrap my head around the reason for the story to end that way, and so, this is what I disliked the most about the book.

My recommended audience; people who are interested in mystery/thriller novels, this is a great book for you.

Set in Chicago, Izzi’s entertaining latest crime thriller chronicles the tale of a misogynist maternity physician whose pro-life stance on abortions and the horrific sleep issues made him a top suspect in a series of arson incidents at several abortion clinics across the city.

Dr. David Fazio, an obstetrician known as the baby doctor among his colleagues, heads the maternity ward at Chicago-Western Medical Hospital. Being supremely skilled at his job doesn’t mean the good doctor is a man of flawless disposition: notorious for his philanderer ways and pro-life views, especially later-term abortions, Fazio is not the most popular doctor in the hospital. And working 70 hours a week, trying to keep infants safe is often a tiring work, resulting in severe insomnia and sleep issues for Dr. Fazio. When a series of arson incidents result in burning down of several abortion clinics throughout the city with a few casualties, Fazio becomes the immediate suspect. With no recollection of his acts on the nights of fires, Fazio realizes there is someone out to get him. With a bigger conspiracy at work with people trying to settle their personal vendetta, Fazio is soon labelled as the “Abortion Arsonist”. But is he really the one?

Interspersed with a suspenseful theme of consecutive arson incidents are regular chapters detailing Fazio’s past and present relationships with different women that shed light on his misogynist psychology. Despite his obvious faults, Fazio with his forceful persona and his endearing quality of not giving a damn about what others think of him make him an unforgettable character. Readers will find themselves rooting for him. The other characters are equally well sketched, and Izzi does a fine job of handling his large cast of characters.

Through his characters’ personal stance on induced abortion, Izzi peers into the souls of both “pro-life” and “pro-choice” activists as he examines the ever-present abortion debate and the ongoing controversy surrounding the moral, legal, and religious status of induced abortion. Readers should be prepared for extreme scenes of graphic violence and adult language. Izzi knows how to tell a captivating if familiar story.

A suspenseful plot, well-drawn cast of characters, and the shocking ending with plenty of twists and turns make for engrossing reading. It’s as much a fast-paced crime thriller as it a compelling novel of devastating moral complexity.

Readers looking for a suspenseful crime thriller will be rewarded.

He had me at Fazio!

Controversy is not an unusual phenomenon to Edward Izzi’s novels. In fact, the author often seeks it! Quando Dormo is Edward Izzi’s latest novel about an attractive gigolo-esque baby doctor, David Fazio, who has no problem making his way through much of the nursing staff at Chicago-Western Medical Hospital and often breaking hearts in his wake. The twice-married bachelor has only one moral issue it seems…the impending abortion law which will make it necessary for him to perform abortions through the moment of birth. A decision that David Fazio is being forced to comply with by hospital administration and one he is vehemently against. Compounding this dilemma is Fazio’s nightly insomnia and sleepwalking. Just where he will wake up he never knows! One morning in particular he awakes with burn wounds on his hands and loud sirens. The abortion clinic down the street is on fire.

Edward Izzi’s writing continues to amaze with intricate plot lines and characters! Each time I read his books; I am living the story with him. He takes special care to develop his characters and does so with meticulous detail. I feel like I know them. Some characters, like David Fazio, I even love to hate. That’s exactly what a good author should do.

Love this writer and his mind. It just never stops!

I loved this revenge story. David Fazio is an obstetrician at a hospital that now supports late term abortions. Dr. Fazio is against that and refuses to perform them. Dr. Fazio is a twice divorced womanizer who has sleepwalking issues. When abortion clinics around town start burning down, David becomes a suspect. He has made enemies over the years and now they are banding together to frame him. What happens throughout this story will have you reeling. I would highly recommend it. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.

This book is so good but will throw you for a massive loop. Just wow. I had a feeling of what was happening...and you don't mess with Little Tony either lol. I never 'dreamed' it went to this extent. And what a twist. I'm loving these books.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The Arsonist . . .

Dr. David Fazio is a pro-life obstetrician at Chicago-Western Medical Hospital. With the state allowing even late-term abortions, the hospital wants him to perform abortions when requested by a patient.

Dr. Fazio also has sleep issues as a sleepwalker. When he wakes up with bad burns on his hands, he finds that a family planning clinic one block away has burned down and several people died. The authorities are looking at him for the crime. How will he deal with controlling his sleepwalking? Could he be the arsonist they suspect him of being? Or is someone else out there burning the clinics?

This is a clever mystery and will pull the reader right in to find out what’s going on. It’s so easy to believe the obvious, but the author relentlessly leads the reader through the fast-paced story line. Grab your copy and follow the clues!
