A Hundred Forevers

When Hades falls in love with Persephone his heart melts like ice on the surface of a frosty lake. When Persephone falls in love with Hades the world is on fire.

A Hundred Forevers, a modern retelling of Hades and Persephone in the same universe as Sunblind, Sunchoked and Heartquakes, deals with the outcome of a skinny love, first kisses and dreams. Ramona Meisel is an artist, writer and mythology nerd living in Germany. She’s a strange human hybrid of mended bones and a soul ripped apart at the edges. Her tongue is sharp enough to cut and her mind keen enough to bleed. When she’s not haunting the net she’s perfectly content to lose time in prose and poetry.

4.5 stars. This is a little known modern poetry retelling of Hades & Persephone, and it’s quick and easy to read, but at the same time gorgeous. I’ve only ever read Sunblind but I’m working my way through Ramona Meisel’s entire We We’re Gods series now and I know I’ll love every piece, because their writing is stunning.

The best way to finish out the year is to remember you still haven't reviewed that poetry collection you've been pushing everybody you know to read.

I don't have a lot to say because I feel like I never say it as well in text as I think it while I'm reading, but I really enjoyed this collection. As most of you know, I'm a huge greek mythology fan. I'm also a huge poetry fan, so if you're putting the two together you've got my attention. I read Meisel's Sunblind for the first time a couple of years ago, but I got out of touch with her work until recently, and I'm so glad there's more to the universe those poems are set in. As always, the poems are graphic and vivid and yet sweet and somber. Surprisingly, I think the poems featuring Demeter ended up being some of my favorites, which I hadn't expected. All in all, a pleasure to read.

2nd read in December 2020:
I loved everything in it so much. I loved that Persephone's rapt is just her leaving with Hades, both together on the road, sleeping in cheap motels or under the stars. I loved how with one was told through the seasons, it makes us realize how much time passed.
I love Hades and Persephone's relationship, how he keeps treating her like a goddess.
I also love Persephone's relationship with her mom, and also Hades' relationship with his brothers.
I just wish it'd been longer because I never want it to end.

A Hades/Persephone modern retelling? SIGN ME UP.

I really love Ramona Meisel's writing and I'm always left with wanting more once it's over. I wanted to know so much more about Hades and Persephone and I really loved their relationship.

3.5/5 - Adored it, but didn't blow me away necessarily. Not sure if i prefer this one or Sunblind, but both worth a read.
