Thirteen-year-old Zoe Lambros is a Greek girl living an idyllic life on the family farm in Farsala, Greece...until the Germans invade her home and then everything changes.
It's 1941 and Zoe is surrounded by death and misery in occupied Greece. She is determined to join the Greek Resistance. With the help of her cousin, Ellie, Zoe is recruited into the Bouboulina Resistance group to take part in a clandestine operation to rescue Jews from certain death. Can Zoe's passionate desire to defend her country be enough to keep her alive long enough to complete the mission?
***Enemy at the Gate was originally a novella that was part of a multi-author 2019 USA Today Bestselling book called "The Darkest Hour: Tales of WW2 Resistance". Once the short run of "The Darkest Hour" ended, the novella blossomed into a novel.***
I don't usually like reading books where I know the outcome before I start and I'm definitely ambivalent about prequels. I often find they either don't marry-up with what I already know or they repeat too much of what has already been covered in the main series, without adding anything new.
About a quarter of this story has been covered in the Intertwined Souls Series of books, but the rest is new. Much of the story is about Zoe growing from an inept, impulsive and at times annoying young girl to a hardened resistance fighter.
This is a decent story and if possible I would have given 3.5 stars.
I really enjoyed this book and the character of Zoe. It’s very different from all the many WWII books I have read. The love of family, devotion and loyalty was beautiful to read about. I loved many of the characters. It is a great book. I was planning on reading the next 6 in the series, but when I discovered Zoe gets involved in a love relationship with another woman I had to change my mind. I’m not willing to read that scenario. I’m not up for that. I’m sorry I’ll be missing out on those books. pamarella PRCS
It was great to get the backstory to the series which I have enjoyed. Not being a student of history, it was interesting to get a better understanding of the Greek perspective of Germany, and Italy. Rich characters, and strong women always make me glad that I found Mary Brooks books. Keep them coming.
When someone said "you can't go wrong", they were totally right. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. So much so I found the next one and bought it before I finished this one.
