For the Dead is the second police procedural in the Detective Inspector Lager series and it reminds me exactly why I love Scandi noir with a passion. Stockholm Detective Charlie is drawn back to her hometown of Gullspång and becomes interested, thanks to journalist Johan bringing it to her attention, in a cold case from 1989 when seventeen-year-old Francesca Mild vanished from her home in a case which was never solved. Charlie decides she is going to investigate, ably assisted by friends, to try to bring the family some closure as to what happened to their daughter. As she begins to dig deeper she quickly comes to the realisation that the official investigation had been seriously flawed from the get-go. And when some of the townsfolk catch sight of her prying into the case many make their displeasure known. The original investigators appear to have assumed Francesca was a teen runaway and that her vanishing was precipitated by her friend Paul Bergman's apparent suicide. By all accounts, it seemed that the police couldn't close her case fast enough. But why? What is there to hide?
Francesca refused to believe that Paul committed suicide or drowned by accident; she thinks he was murdered and puts her investigative skills into action trying to uncover the truth. This possibly rubbed someone up the wrong way. Told from the perspective of Francesca in the past and Charlie’s investigation and what she uncovers in the present, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from both the victim and the seeker of justice. It made me incredibly sad that her disappearance was not taken seriously and her poor mental health was frequently cited as a get-out clause for the police. The atmosphere created was one of the standout aspects of the book where the ominous weather adds to the overall tension. It's a slow-burn, character-driven thriller yet this doesn't stop you being glued to the pages. It is an intricately plotted, intense and beautifully written piece of fiction. I look forward to the third instalment and being reacquainted with Charlie. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Orion for an ARC.

Detective Charlie Lager keert terug naar haar geboorteplaats, het rustige stadje Gullspång. Ze denkt regelmatig terug aan haar moeder. Ook keert steeds een beeld terug van een landhuis. Dit grote landhuis blijkt een rol te spelen in de cold case waar Charlie nu op is gezet.
Dertig jaar geleden verdween een jong meisje, Francesca, uit Gullspång. Alles wijst erop dat ze iets wist over de dood van haar klasgenootje. Francesca bleek zelf nogal een buitenbeentje, dus niemand in het dorp geloofde haar. Maar toen verdween ze zelf plotseling...
Charlie duikt samen met journalist Johan Ro in deze onopgeloste zaak. Maar dan komen ze iemand tegen die ook iets over dit verleden weet en diegene doet er alles aan om dit geheim te houden...
'De kinderen die het bos in gingen' is het tweede deel in de Charlie Lager serie. Ik vond het eerste deel erg goed, dus ik was zeer benieuwd naar dit vervolg. Charlie keert terug naar het dorp voor haar vriendin, maar al gauw duikt ze in de onopgeloste zaak van Francesca, het verdwenen meisje.
Er wordt vanuit verschillende perspectieven verteld. Zo spring je dertig jaar terug in de tijd en lees je vanuit Francesca. Je leert hierdoor dit personage steeds beter kennen. Het wordt al gauw duidelijk dat iedereen haar raar vindt en niemand gelooft haar als ze denkt meer te weten over de verdwijning van haar klasgenootje.
Ook wordt er veel vanuit Charlie verteld. Je krijgt weer wat meer te weten over haar verleden en het dorp waar ze opgroeide. De verdwijning van Francesca blijft tot het einde raadselachtig. Het plot had ik eerlijk gezegd niet zien aankomen, dus dat is weer een groot pluspunt.
Dit deel is weer heel vlot geschreven. De korte hoofdstukken maken het wederom prettig. Wel raad ik je aan om deze serie op volgorde te lezen, want er komen regelmatig dingen uit het eerste deel naar voren.
'De kinderen die het bos ingingen' was voor mij weer volop genieten. Ik heb meteen het derde deel gereserveerd en zal deze zeker binnenkort lezen!

Dit boek is zo verrassend. Je denkt het te weten maar je weet niets en het einde, plot is ook zo verrassend. Ik heb het eerste boek van de auteur niet gelezen maar ik kan nu al zeggen dat ik het eerste boek zeker zal lezen! De manier waarop het verhaal geschreven is vind ik ook zo goed, niet een typisch politieonderzoek verhaal maar toch krijg je die spanning mee en wat een vrouw is die Charlie Lager! Het boek leest ook als een trein en is eigenlijk moeilijk aan de kant te leggen. Een dikke ⭐️⭐️⭐️(⭐️)- waard als je het mij vraagt.

Recién terminado, me ha costado un poco más que Annabelle, sigue en la misma línea que el anterior. En vez de centrarse más en la investigación policial del caso de turno se centra en el personaje principal, la subinspectora Charlie. Con un pasado tortuoso y con mil problemas psicológicos, tal vez demasiados para mi gusto, vuelve a su pueblo para seguir desenmarañando su triste pasado.
Me ha gustado bastante y no me queda otra que esperar el siguiente ⏳⏳

Segundo libro de la serie, es imprescindible haber leído primero "Annabelle"... En este libro se sigue desvelando la infancia de la inspectora, continúa donde acabó el primer libro.
Otro caso más de desaparición de una adolescente, aunque este 30 años atrás. Como positivo, se lee rápido (sobre todo si lees en diagonal las partes más pesadas) y hacia el final coge ritmo y estás deseando descubrir que demonios pasó.
Como negativo... ¿se puede vivir sin ansiolíticos, pastillas para dormir y toneladas de alcohol? Parece que los personajes (actuales y pasados) no. Todos se drogan, todos se emborrachan ¡viva el vino!
Mejora el primero de la serie aunque no cierra del todo, se ve que hay más libros. Un 3 ⭐

The follow-up to the excellent For The Missing, once again sees Stockholm detective Charlie Lager return to her hometown of Gullspång. A journalist with whom she had a brief affair in the previous novel draws her attention to the unsolved disappearance of 17-year-old Francesca Mild back in 1989.
After obtaining the official reports, Charlie soon realises that the original unsigned investigation was seriously flawed. Without evidence, it was assumed Francesca had simply run off following the apparent suicide of her best friend Paul Bergman. Also, it seems Charlie’s investigations are stirring up something of a hornet’s nest in Gullspång and there are those who have no desire to see the case reopened.
There are occasional flashbacks telling Francesca’s story and how she is determined to prove that Paul was murdered. Again, an idea the authorities don’t wish to consider.
Despite their totally different backgrounds, one can’t help noticing the similarities between Francesca and Charlie; particularly their methodical tenacity, despite all the odds seemingly stacked against them. Although the investigations proceed slowly at first, they build up to a nailbiting finale when, once again, Charlie exposes another of Gullspång’s dirty secrets.
Once again, Lina Bengstdotter has produced a carefully crafted and engrossing thriller featuring her well-rounded and admirable central character.

De kinderen die het bos in gingen is het tweede deel in de Charlie Lager reeks. Eerder las ik ook al het eerste deel De vrouw die terug moest en vond dat een zeer vlot lezend boek. Mijn nieuwsgierigheid was dus al gauw geprikkeld om ook het tweede deel te lezen. Hierin wordt het personage Charlie verder uitgewerkt en wordt een oude verdwijningszaak weer actueel als een journalist Charlie benadert om dieper in de zaak te duiken van de vermiste Fransesca. Zij verdween uit Gullspang dertig jaar geleden en niemand weet wat er met haar voorgevallen is en of ze nog in leven is.
Het verhaal is net zoals het eerste deel uitermate spannend en het is gissen hoe alles in elkaar verweven zit. Er zijn stukken bij die vertellen over het verleden en hoe Fransesca haar jeugd beleefd heeft. Zij zat in een diep dal na de dood van haar beste vriend en ze was er rotsvast van overtuigd dat het niet om zelfmoord ging. Ze krijgt echter nergens gehoor en voelt zich onbegrepen. Het is fijn om een afwisseling te hebben tussen heden en verleden en om uiteindelijk tot de climax te komen. Het is wel wat jammer dat de afhandeling van het mysterie zo snel wel wordt afgehandeld. In enkele alinea’s wordt het hele verhaal opgehelderd en stopt het boek. Dat had van mij gerust nog iets beter uitgewerkt mogen worden. Ik heb weer genoten van dit tweede deel over Charlie en ben benieuwd geworden naar het derde deel. Ik geef dit boek graag 4 sterren.

Er gebeurde eigenlijk niet heel veel. Beetje een aaneenrijging van gesprekken en vage herinneringen aan haar moeder. Het is eigenlijk niet echt een thriller; daarvoor ontbreekt de spanning en de actie. De plottwist aan het einde zag ik ergens wel aankomen, maar tegelijkertijd was het verrassend. In ieder geval een perfect opzetje voor boek 3. Dat moet er sowieso komen, want er ligt nog iemand in het ziekenhuis en het zou een beetje flauw zijn als ze dat zo laat eindigen.

An engaging story, though the beginning can feel a bit confusing and hard to follow at first. Still, as the novel goes on, the plot becomes more and more entertaining and dynamic. I think the fact that it doesn’t dwell too much on descriptions and gets straight to the point makes it a much more enjoyable read. I’d say that, although it’s a horror story, it’s really more of a psychological and macabre thriller — starting with a simple box and spiraling into complete madness. A great book to start with if you’re new to this author.

Creo que esta segunda novela de la saga es mucho mas completa y mejor elaborada. Los personajes al conocerlos ya desde antes, se centra mucho mas en el contenido y el trama, que va muy unido al primero y sobre todo a pesar de a ver nuevos casos sigue la esencia de intentar resolver el misterio de la familia de la protagonista. Respecto al final, a pesar de que creo que queda mucho mas cerrada que en la primera novela, quizá diría que acaba demasiado de repente, con un breve desenlace.

Sterke opbouw van het verhaal, leuk het heen en weer springen tussen verleden en heden. Charly intrigeert.Ik kijk alweer uit naar het volgende boek.
Enige mini minpuntje: het leest makkelijker als je het eerste boek met Charly als hoofdpersoon ook hebt gelezen.

Ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Noch besser als Band 1.
Weiterhin sympathische Charaktere, spannend geschrieben mit sehr guten Twists, auch wenn ich mir ein paar davon schon vorher gedacht habe.
Hat mich aber nicht gestört. Sehr gutes Buch!

Francesca är den andra delen i serien om kriminalinspektör Charlie Lager. Jag läste den första boken, Annebelle, för drygt ett år sedan, och jag tyckte den var mycket bra. Här är en länk till min recension av den boken.
Boken Fransesca är nästan lika bra som Annebelle tycker jag. Den är liknande i stilen, och jag tror man vinner mycket på att läsa Annebelle först, även om Francesca också kan läsas fristående.
Den är välskriven, spännande, och gripande. Och jag ser fram emot fler kommande böcker i serien.
Rekommenderar båda böckerna.

Dit boek heeft me echt aangegrepen van het begin tot het einde.
Geen bloederige taferelen, geen horror, maar gewoon een geweldig mooi boek dat je weet te boeien.
Voor mij mogen er nog meer Charlie Lager verhalen komen.

Bok serien överlag är bra 🫶
Denna delen i triologin var betydligt motigare vid starten än den första. Tempot borde ökats. Jag gillar att man redan under boken gång blir introducerad till fortsättningens kommande fall.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Orion Publishing Group for an advance copy of For the Dead, the second novel to feature Stockholm detective Charlie Lager, set in her home town of Gullspång.
Journalist Johan Ro interests Charlie in a missing person’s case from 1989 where 17 year old Francesca Mild disappeared from her home near Gullspång, never heard from again. On holiday in Gullspång Charlie decides to investigate unofficially with help from Johan and meets a wall of silence.
I really enjoyed For the Dead which is more character driven than fast paced action and not my usual fare. It is told alternately from Francesca and Charlie’s point of view so the reader has more information than the investigator but rather than make it boring it makes it more interesting as both have an interest in events and a completely different angle.
Francesca is depressed after the death of her best friend, Paul, who drowned in the lake at their boarding school. An accident is the official explanation, suicide is the generally accepted solution and Francesca, alone, believes he was murdered and sets about investigating. Francesca, however, has a history of mental health issues so the reader never knows whether to believe what she says or not, her parents and doctor definitely don’t. She has a compelling story to tell and I found myself caught up in it, even though she wanders about her timeline over the course of her narrative. I guess it reinforces her fragility.
Charlie, on the other hand, is initially interested in the case because nobody mentioned Francesca when she was last in Gullspång looking for another missing teenager. She soon realises that her mother, Betty, has a role in Francesca’s story and that spurs her on. The novel is as much about her trying to reconcile her past and present to find some peace as it is about her investigation. I think she takes a few steps in the right direction in this novel but she’s still a troubled soul. I didn’t find her story as compelling as Francesca’s, perhaps because it’s mostly more mundane, but she’s certainly a more relatable character, making poor choices and trying to do better.
For the Dead is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

Francesca, however, has a history of mental health issues so the reader never knows whether to believe what she says or not, her parents and doctor definitely don’t. She has a compelling story to tell and I found myself caught up in it, even though she wanders about her timeline over the course of her narrative. I guess it reinforces her fragility.
Charlie, on the other hand, is initially interested in the case because nobody mentioned Francesca when she was last in Gullspång looking for another missing teenager. She soon realises that her mother, Betty, has a role in Francesca’s story and that spurs her on. The novel is as much about her trying to reconcile her past and present to find some peace as it is about her investigation. I think she takes a few steps in the right direction in this novel but she’s still a troubled soul. I didn’t find her story as compelling as Francesca’s, perhaps because it’s mostly more mundane, but she’s certainly a more relatable character, making poor choices and trying to do better.
For the Dead is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

fter a thriving debut, Lina Bengtsdotter returns with the second volume in the Charlie Lager series and the final result is an even better novel than the previous one, For the Missing. The Swedish author creates a captivating story featuring a protagonist who bears some of the characteristics that are reminiscent of some of the most fabled main characters in Nordic crime fiction such as Mia Kruger, Harry Hole, and Tuva Moodyson. Charlie has a difficulty in establishing meaningful social relationships, exhibits a tendency towards alcoholism, and she more than often gets so immersed in her cases that she forgets to rest and find some time for herself. For the Dead is set, chronologically, a few months after the events that took place in the previous installment and Charlie is still striving to get over some of the most haunting memories from the case of Annabelle Roos's disappearance in Gullspång, the little town where Charlie used to live as a kid along with her mercurial mother, Betty. Annabelle's case proved to be connected with people that Charlie used to know well and some of the persons involved meant a lot to her. The cost that she had to pay both professionally and personally was immense and the beginning of the book finds her scarred and trying to put her life in order once again. Her boss, Challe, insists that she has to take time some time off in order to come in terms with everything that happened back in her hometown, but Charlie isn't particularly keen to the idea.

Jag tycker bättre om den andra boken i serien. Kanske har jag vant mig vid Charlie Lager eller stör mig mindre på hennes klichéer. Ännu en försvunnen flicka, ännu ett mysterium. Vem, vad och varför?

Después de leer esta segunda entrega queda claro que la autora tiene ligerísimo problema con su madre porque es la única explicación que hay para se centrase tanto en la madre de la protagonista.
Si la primera entrega fue tirando a mediocre su continuación no mejora sino que repite constantemente los errores que tenía su predecesora.
No me han gustado los protagonistas -salvo el periodista pero sale muy poco, y los niños- ni cómo se desarrolla una trama de intriga que no tiene un buen comienzo, o una buena justificación. Pero lo peor es el final nada elaborado y previsible.
Como conclusión: este libro me ha confirmado que Lina Bengtsdotter no escribe las historias que me gustan.
