Mage Throne Prophecy

Rate this book

A routine physical shows Captain Ross Mitchell has a flesh-eating virus that specifically targets the brain. Prognosis says he'll be a vegetable by week's end. Having survived numerous incursions in combat around the world, he decides he's not going out like that. He drives a rented corvette into a cliff face at over 200 MPH. The fiery impact catapults him toward the afterlife. Instead of finding the afterlife, he finds himself in a different body with an old man stabbing him in his chest. He fights free, killing the old man before passing out. He wakes to find he's now in the body of Prince Aaron, the 15-year-old second son of the King. In this medieval world, the Royals are Mages. The old man who was trying to kill him was a Mage "Vampire". Instead of blood, the old Mage was trying to steal Ross/Aaron's power, knowledge, and in this case his body. When Ross/Aaron killed the old Mage, his vampire power was transferred to him. He now has the memories, knowledge, and powers of the old Mage. Ross/Aaron must navigate this new environment of court intrigue with care. His older brother, the Crown Prince, hates him. His older sister has no use for him. The King sees him as an asset to be used, agreeing to marry him to a neighboring Kingdom for an alliance. Before the marriage takes place, the castle is attacked. Someone is trying to kill him but is finding it most difficult. Where Mages fight with Magic, Ross/Aaron fights with magic and steel. It's hard to cast a spell with a knife through your skull, or your throat cut. As Ross/Aaron travels with his fiancée toward her home for the marriage to take place, they are attacked at every turn. Someone doesn't want this wedding to happen. Ross/Aaron has had enough of people trying to kill him. With Aaron's knowledge, and Ross' training, they take the offensive. The Kingdom will never be the same.

Very similar to the Legend of the Arch magus series with a hint of Daniel Black involved. 27 year old special forces officer finds out he has flesh eating brain disease and decides he would rather go out in a blaze of glory. He drives a corvette over a cliff and instead of waking up in heaven he wakes up in the body of a 15 year old who is about to be murdered. He uses his training to kill the attacker and absorbs the attackers power and memories. His attacker had been using his power to take over young powerful magicians at least 9 times before. He realizes that he is the second son of a corrupt king. Everyone thought the other magician was just going to give him a serum to wake up his magic, which there are known side effects. Aaron uses this knowledge to pretend that he has memory loss and that is the reason he acts so different now. He begins training his body to get his old skills back and also learns magic.

This is one of those books where the main character is insanely OP and gets more power throughout the story. He demolishes his enemies without much effort and builds up his new people. There is a lot of town building involved. Not once did I ever feel that Aaron was ever in danger. This was a fun read. I sometimes like stories where I know the good guy is going to win and the bad guy is going to lose no matter what.

So, is it possible for an author to plairagize his own book? This was basically the hand made mage with the serial numbers filed off and some names and minor details changed. I liked the first incantation of this book, but this respin had me scratching my head for the whole thing, wondering where I had read it before.

MC is way way way too powerful

The first several chapters were intriguing but it soon became apparent that the MC is essentially a god. There was really no plot to logically follow.

Imagine playing Wolcen or some other pc game and then cheat and give your level 1 character 200 on all stats when norm is 10. Then go ahead and give that character mithril weapons and other pay to win items.

Now have him go kill all the level 5 baddies and power level. That is this book. It became a chore to read and I stopped at chapter 17 then skipped to the end. It was more of the same crap. Neat idea in the beginning but I really cannot recommend this.

Unbelievable main character

I like the concept of this book and it started out well, the problem is that it veered off into ridiculousness. The main character was the greatest hero I have ever read of, he literally could do whatever he wanted without any real opposition. It was confusing because he kept an army ready but never used them, instead he would kill everyone by himself. Ridiculous.

In itself, this was a highly entertaining story, certainly worth more than 1 stars. However, even apart from the many, many grammar mistakes and typos, large parts of the storyline are a direct copy of his previous book Hand Made Mage. Self-plagiarism may not be illegal but presenting large parts of a previous book as a new book is not entirely ethical. Shame because I enjoyed both books.

Awesome. I was almost late to work because I couldn't put it down. Well written, exciting, cool magic, trials and tribulation to keep it interesting and best of all, a darn good fantasy adventure. Highly recommended and definitely not to be missed.

While the story started off promising with a good beginning I found that the MC was way too powerful and felt that less of this OP may have helped give the MC more humanity instead of a seemingly more wooden or really does not need anyone's help. Some of the storyline where he basically is a one man army seemed extremely far fetched and how some of his processes were not believable. I also noticed a lot of broken or fluid of story telling that made me feel was not well formed or was not reviewed to make more coherent causing me to skip sentences just to get to a better section. Some better side characters or more use of them in battle scenarios may have helped but as it was I could only read into the middle and could not go any further. Unfortunately I doubt will come back to this story which seemed to have promise.

If you like a book where the MC is all powerful from the moment he arrives and can do anything and knows how to do everything, then this is the book for you.
Fast read and more suited to young readers. Not a lot of violence. More of a first shooter style plot. Not a lot of depth in characters. No suspense.

This book was awesome. There were quite a few scenes that were pretty humorous. The MC is pretty laid back but once he gets his dander up he kind of flies off the handle and he keeps his word to the letter and in the spirit. Much like the ending of the book showed.

When I got done reading it I was kind of hoping for a second book or at least one that continued the story of one of the side characters like his brother Amos or maybe his kids in the far future.

Basically a soldier guy running on god mode in a fantasy world. I wouldn't call the book bad, as the writing was fairly decent, but it also didn't feel like there was much of substance here. No struggle, rather just an exploration of how many tools he has at his disposal and how much loot he got from everywhere.

Enjoyable story, but grammar issues.

I enjoyed the story. It was fun and made me feel good while reading it. It did however, have some major grammar issues, so if you cannot ignore that, or until it is fixed by a future editing, you may want to skip this story.

Fun read

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's not too deep and involved with a likeable main character. He is vastly over powered yet not done in an irritating way a lot of novels do.
I would recommend this book to others, while I would have liked a more in depth look into the MC s thoughts and his relationship it was a very pleasant read.

I disliked the way it was written, every sentence seemed to go like "I did X, then y" it just started getting on my nerve.

Plot wise it's boring. As others have pointed out the main character is very powerful from the get go with no real effort but that is not inherently a problem, many of you might be aware of the iconic moment where superman fails to save his father because despite his immense power there are limits, you will get nothing like that here. Forget raw power, MC has no challenge in logistics, puzzles or even a case where he would be needed in 2 locations at ones. Does not even have to cook his own food, etc he loots magical tents and other items that do it all for him. When all that is gone you are left with 2 options city builder and self reflection.

MC there is a lot of material for self reflection, internal struggles, opportunities to have a reaction to events but at most you get an occasional burst of anger.

As for city builder. . Considerations for economic cause and effect, mass death or exodus are very minimal.

I was pleasantly surprised that at least the farmers already knew how to rotate crops. unfortunately the same logic was not applied to the rest of the worldbuilding and the effects magic would have on it. All the characters are paper thin and go back into the box as soon as the plot/MC are done with them, with some Im not even sure why they are there. Characters are less written and more designated, MC has a bad brother, good brother, bad father, good mother, etc and you just have to take the plots word for it.

One such example is rodrigo-san

The ending,

Great Authors Need Great Readers !

If you are like me you devour books every spare moment you have. If you let yourself be drawn into your latest adventure book, whatever the genre, you are naturally drawn to great authors like James Haddock.

James’ books are classic “good vs. evil” scenarios. The characters are clearly and definitively drawn. You might even recognize some classic traits of these characters as belonging to people you have come across in your lifetime.

Remember however, as my old professor used to say, “If you don’t recognize the traits of the “Evildoers” in the stories that you read, it’s probably because those traits? They are yours!”

In my reviews, if you have read any previously, I try not to give anything away. The authors of the books I review spend a very long time and a great deal of effort, blood, sweat and yes, tears to bring their books to fruition. Respect that in your reviews.

Don’t like a book? Or the way it was written? Then take the time to explain why without giving anything away, and rate accordingly. Perhaps it is something easily fixed. Nowadays it is far easier for authors to update their books, especially when they are online. If you really enjoyed the reading experience, do the same without giving away key information.

Many readers, myself included, use these ratings religiously as a part of the book-choosing process. If you looked at my library you would rarely see anything below 4 stars (provided they have a number of reviews already).

There are simply too many books to choose from out there to waste time on a 2 star book. If unsure, definitely read the reviews people took time to write. Many times the lower scores are due to spelling and/or grammatical errors. Again, that’s easily fixed.

If you are an author, please do yourself and your readers a huge favor and connect with some BETA readers who will proofread your books looking for these errors. It is a service that is almost always free.

Prolific readers like myself engage in Beta reading because we love the authors writing, dislike such errors and perform the service for free since they know they are among the first to read new material.

I also contact some authors who have had books published years ago but the kindle version of the books have errors. Even bestsellers can still have grammatical, spelling or continuity issues. Not a big deal to fix but makes an enormous difference in the enjoyment for the reader.

I have been blessed often by writers sending me a short note of thanks. Some authors even ask me great questions about the book I reviewed.

Did it end how I thought it would? Did I have any ideas about how I would have ended the book? Would I have changed anything? Did any part(s) have issues with continuity? What did I think was coming for the next book in the series?

Few things are more enjoyable than chatting with the author of the latest books you are devouring.

Watch out for them dragons!

Peace

Goods and bads

This is the third book that I have read by this author and, unfortunately, I am starting to see the telltale signs of his writing. Three books I have read, including this one, I’ll send her around a person who, through mystical means, receives God like magical powers. Every single one of the books has the character sailing under the ground, flying through the air, and basically being impossibly powerful. Well that is true of this book, what I didn’t like about this one compared to the others is the character itself. The main character is more well rounded and believable than the others. Also I have noticed with this author that time is not very well written into the books. For instance this character starts off as a 15-year-old and is definitely much older by the end of it. Wow this is true of most of the books by this author, the plot makes sure that keeping up with time management is believable. Also the sarcasm and wit of the main character is incredibly refreshing and enjoyable. I will say, as with some writings of small others that I’ve seen, grammatical errors do show up in this book. While it doesn’t detract from the overall story, there are enough that they do become fairly noticeable. It’s a good book and if this was the first time I was reading this author I would probably have given it a four, but because it is so similar to other books that he is written I unfortunately have to knock a star off for that. Still a good book.

My Thoughts:
Wonderful stand-alone fantasy!

This is the "fifth" story that I have read of this author's work. So, I am already an entrenched fan. Just as I am an entrenched fan of Daniel Wisniewski , as he seems to be the one reading most of James Haddock 's books. Being a die-hard fan of both James and Daniel , most of what I am going to say here is probably just fan-girling. But that does not preclude the fact that this book is wonderful, indeed!

The end kinda took me by surprise, though! Bravo!!

I am fervently hoping for more books in King Aaron's world!

Quantitative Evaluation:
Story telling quality = 5
Character development = 4.5
Story itself = 4.5
Writing Style = 5
Ending = 5
World building = 5
Cover art = 4
Pace = (9 hrs and 25 mins listening time)
Plot = 4
Narration = 5

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5

Entertaining but...

So I liked the book, it was pretty light and entertaining but held my interest enough to finish it. My only reservation is that there is really no sense of conflict or pressure to the story. The protagonist is so over powered that he literally solves all of his problem in just a few pages so there is no suspense at all because everything works out perfectly for him. Towards the end of the book I found myself thinking “oh this will be an interesting conflict” and then two pages later all the bad guys are dead and the hero moves on rinse and repeat. There’s not really enough here for an ongoing series because it’s going to be too easy for the good guys.

That said if you just wanted something to kill time and don’t care about how flawed the story progression is than this one is just entertaining enough to finish.

Enjoyable Read

Captain Ross has just days of meaningful life left, so he chooses to go out in a spectacular crash. Instead, he finds himself in an alternate reality. He wakes in the body of young Prince Aaron with someone trying to kill him. He manages to survive and adapt to his new life. As a spare prince he is betrothed to a neighboring kingdom's Princess to further his father, the King's ambition. Fortunately he likes her. Many enemies arise to kill him before he marries Princess Reggie. However, he has the power. A moral seems to be: treat people right and good karma will follow. I like the action, humor, and romance. I hope there will be another book. The main characters are very likeable.

Amazing

I have read two of hames haddocks books so far. Both have been absolutely amazing. You can really watch the characters grow and change. The only complaint that I have is that everything is squished so close together. and in this book, the main character has a very unique power, but unfortunately James haddock does not seem to capitalize on this and it is not mentioned much in the book. Also, the books end on cliffhangers with nothing more for the character to do, So you want to read a second book in the series because of how it is written and gets you invested in the characters, but there probably won’t be another book because there is nothing else for the character to do

Power fantasy with cute ending

Little to no true structure to the magic system. Main character basically sgarts ppwerful and goes up from there. It IS inderectly explained though.

I also didn't agree with all his political or economic choices. But that's fine.

I enjoyed the book and thought the ending was cute. It brought home the main thing about this book. This is a power fantasy fluff and escape book. There's a little grit in the fluff but honestly the world doesn't surprise you and the MC conquers all. It's that kind of story. If you come into reading it with that in mind you should enjoy the whole trip.

(PS- Mc actually gets happily married and has kids if that's something you're looking for in you escape.)

As with all of Mr. Haddock's other books that I've read, an excellent fantasy story

Fantasy with a modern twist! Mostly magic based, but he throws in medieval elements, like ballistas for warfare. The MC comes from Earth, has a short time to live, and gets transported to a magical world. He's in a younger body, but he retains his knowledge from Earth. There's a mage trying to kill him ( the boy he's been transported into), but he kills the mage instead.
The rest of the story is him growing in magical power and helping the people around him. It has enough twists and turns that I had to keep reading! And Mr. Haddock left it as a cliffhanger, so we can hope for a follow-up story (or more!).

Interesting concept

There were things I enjoyed about book, such as the initial idea that having a deadly illness gave the protagonist his chance at a new life. The world building was ok. Everything came a bit too easily to Aaron for me, he just had to think about what he wanted to do or know and it happened. There weren't really any trials or tribulations for him. Reggie was a great character who could have been used much more, same story with Amos.

The other thing that bothers me is that the farmers had never considered the idea of manure as fertiliser! Never hearing of a plough was a possibility, even though mediaeval farmers used simple ones. It was just a tad unbelievable (I know it's a fantasy novel).

Otherwise an enjoyable story.

I liked the idea, but the story wasn't written very well. Some examples: you have no idea how many time has passed in the story, but it has to be at least several years. It is never mentioned though. Another thing is that the magic has no basis and is not explained. Things just 'magically' happen which leaves you scratching behind your ear like... how could this be possible? It doesn't make sense. And the grammar and structuring of sentences is horrible.

I could go on, but these are a couple of examples that annoyed me the most. Especially because the basis of the story is interesting (if you like massively overpowered MC's)

It is what it is

I enjoy this book. It’s not that well written, the MC is a Mary Sue who is MASSIVELY over powered. But the book is pretty fun. It’s basically the same as two other books he’s written but so what. This is not great literature it’s a book to waste a couple of hours on and not worry about life. Don’t read this if you’re expecting a great or even a solid novel, if you’re someone that reads a couple of dozen books a year go somewhere else. But if you’re like me and you read a couple of hundred a year and just want to not think or stress about life read on. This is the book version of a sitcom.

Good start, but lacking depth to the MC, didn't finish reading it.

Good idea for the story, some good pacing of some events in the story, but lacking in depth to the MC, history of the world and the magic.
MC lacks some key emotional interactions between other characters, and the timeline for the story is not clear, yes the MC is meant to be OP, but the story could have been made longer to include a more detailed world, as the Author could possibly have put more into the history of the world and it's magic system.
Also needs to be more proof reading done as the grammar and spelling could be better.
In the end I didn't finish the book because of these issues with it.

Mage Throne Prophecy

I left a review for one of this authors books a couple of weeks back that criticised his writing style a little. I thought it was only fair to leave another review now that I’ve read another of his books. The writing style is different to most books and I have to admit that it’s grown on me. I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast paced story. I like that the magic isn’t explained in too much detail, which gives the author free rein without getting tied up in too many rules.
I’m now going to read my way through his whole back catalogue if that helps anyone decide whether or not to read this.

I liked it!

Overall I liked it and enjoyed reading it. As for the comments I noticed several typos which I typically don’t as many others reviewed. Yes it was similar to another book but different so it had a formulaic. I enjoyed reading Hand Made Mage before this which encouraged me to read this book due to reviews. I will likely continue to read this author based on these two books I have read. I will check out his other works and see what I am interested. If you read the overview and were interested I would encourage you to buy and read.

Now, this here is a rare power fantasy that does something rare. It plays things out in a way that's very quick and semi-dirty. This isn't some rube being sent to another world. But someone who has "a particular set of skills." Now imagine someone like that being given magic. If this was a film, and you asked me for context as a book reader? I'd tell you. " Don't think too hard about it. If you've seen Taken or the Transporter. Then you know this book. It is tactical with some faith thrown in. but my goodness does this really scratch the itch of I just want to read!

enjoyed the read, but NOT the numetous errors!

Im reading most of thid author's books, as Im a speed reader, and a proof reader, and have difficulty keeping myself in books.

I have problems with the spelling and syntax of ALL these books! I don't know if its because this author put the NUMEROUS errors in his books, or if the AI electronic service put the errors in his books, but every book has numerous errors. I don't know how Amazon Kindle turns hard copy into an electronic copy for Kindle, but apparently the software either needs tweaking or updated!

Great Book

I had just finished " Hand Made Mage " and was looking for something to read and I saw this book. I didn't notice the book I finished and this book was by the same author. I was very happy when I found this out. I think this book was a little more involved than the first book more interaction between characters. I enjoy this book and looking forward to more books with this character.
