Astrid has been under her mother’s thumb from the time she was small. She tries to please Beibhinn but when her mother thrusts Astrid into the arms of a lecherous man with no morals, she’s torn between duty and self-preservation. Her brother Diarmuid is far too busy with his own happy marriage (read his story in Curse of the Healer) to see she’s properly married to a man who’ll be a good match and treat her with respect and honor. Then there’s her bodyguard and warrior, Marcan, who’s always around watching her like a hawk.

Marcan is an honorable man, fierce warrior whose ancestor is none other than legendary Brian Boru. He’s well-respected, even though he bears a genetic trait that most seers have: different colored eyes. His heart, though, belongs to Astrid. She doesn’t know he exists, except as her brother’s close friend. All she has to do is say yes and he’ll fight anyone who stood in their way, even Beibhinn.

Astrid realizes almost too late her feelings for Marcan and in a moment of passion, confesses her love. Now together, they confront Beibhinn to disastrous consequences. Can their love overcome hatred or will Astrid and Marcan be ripped from each other forever?

Another moving historical romance by Ashley York. I know I’ve said this before, but reading York’s books is like taking a step back in history. From the first page, I was swept away. The narration was so rich, so vivid, I swear I was sitting next to Astrid and Marcan.

I like a good antagonist but I utterly despised Beibhinn. She’s a vindictive, miserable person and I wanted bad things to happen to her. She’s the epitome of selfishness and greed. Such a contrast from Marcan.

If you love sweeping historical romances, pick this up today! While it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.

Favorite Character/Quote: Marcan. I loved how strong he was yet had a loving, sensitive heart. He was such a wonderfully complex character and seemed to bring out the best and worst in Astrid. His protectiveness of her throughout the book made me swoon. Every woman deserves a man to love her like Marcan loves Astrid.

My Rating: 5 stars

Book Review For: Eyes of the Seer by Ashley York 'Eyes of the Seer' by Ashley York is the story of Astrid and Marcán. This is book Two in the series "Descendants of the High King". The first book was "Curse of the Healer" which dealt with Astrid's brother Diarmuid. This book does run parallel to the other book but you don't have to have read that book to enjoy this book....but it was a great book.Marcán is Astrid brother's best friend and she as known him a long time. Diarmuid, Astrid's brother and Marcán are very protective of her, and seem to deter away any suitors. But Astrid's mother wants to live with another clan that Padraig is associated with. Astrid does have a small crush on Padraig, who she feels would be a good husband. So Astrid goes forward with her mother's demand that she land him for a husband. But her attempt to get him alone is stopped by Marcán. Marcán tries to talk to her about men just wanting to use her and not actually take her for a wife. But between her mother and her strong desire to be married she attempts to talk to Padraig again leads her to almost be attacked by him...if it wasn't for one of her clansman saving her. But she doesn't tell her clansman what actually happened to protect that clansman and to not cause a issue. But Marcán and her brother knows something happened...and her mother still thinks to marry her off to him. But Astrid's mother has her heart set on her daughter getting into Padraig's clan. Diarmuid knew early on that his heart was given to Astrid but she doesn't see him as a man. So he thinks that he will have to watch her marry another. 4 and ½ Stars - Love Amidst Warring Clans in Medieval Ireland

Set in 1095 in Eire (Ireland), this is the story of Astrid and Marcán of Clonascra, both from the same clan but meant to marry others. Of marriageable age, Astrid is tempting to those young men who only want her virtue. And the neighboring clan has plenty of warriors who fall into that category.

Marcán, however, has proven himself as a warrior and a gentleman, guarding Astrid’s virtue while wanting her for his own. Born with different-colored eyes, a condition thought by some, including Astrid’s mother, to mark him as a disfavored seer, he must fight Astrid’s mother who wants Astrid marry out of their clan.

Urged on by her mother, Astrid seeks the attention of a man who initially only wants her for pleasure but then decides it is politically expedient to marry her.

The story is rich in historical detail and puts you into the medieval era as opposing clans vie for control. The language reflects an earlier time which I quite liked.

One clan treats their women well; one does not. Our heroine is from the clan that treats women well, but she makes some very foolish choices and has difficulty speaking up for herself. Too, her mother dominates her.

Marcán is a noble sort and no “seer”. He only wants to do right by Astrid, but he cannot be everywhere and keep Astrid from putting herself in troublesome positions.

Eventually it all comes right but getting there is the adventure. Fans of medieval romance set in Ireland will enjoy it.

Confusing plot

This story has a confusing plot.
Astrid and Marcán are destined to be together. Her brother is the king of their clan. It was better toward the end.
Ashley York writes a bit of a forbidden tale.

I received this book from net galley for an honest review. Thank you!!

This novel was an enjoyable read. I recommend reading the first book in the series, Curse of the Healer, since the stories do overlap each other. I have read a few of Ms. York's novels and I continue to enjoy them. She brings romance and history together, as well as prejudices of people for things they do not understand. Things are not always what they seem and the past has a way of impacting the present.
Astrid has always sought the approval of her mother, but is continuously disappointed. When her mother concocts a plan to have Astrid marry into Clan Meic Murchadha, Astrid goes along with her mother's plan. Though, her mother has a hidden agenda. I was frustrated with Astrid doing things to please her mother, but she did grow as a character and let her passions be released. She becomes a character that will do anything to protect the people she loves, even if it means sacrificing herself.
Marcán of Clonascra has been in love with Astrid for years but she is oblivious. Marcán watches out for Astrid, knowing the man she intends to be her betrothed has a dark side. He has two different color eyes and people believe it is a mark of a Seer, but Marcán is a warrior and highly observant.
When Astrid has an event that changes her perspective on her future goals, she realizes how much Marcán cares for her, for she feels foolish that she did not realize her own feelings toward him. However, her mother keeps interfering and with her brother's own troubles, it forces them to keep there relationship a secret.
As things begin to settle, another card is played which impacts their relationship and the fate of the clans. Will Astrid and Marcán be able to finally reveal their love to each for all to see or will her mother have the final word?

Good God, is Ashley York ever going to write something that I don't like?!

In the 2nd book, we see the story of Diarmuid's best friend, and Astrid, Diarmuid's sister. Marcán is by far the only man Astrid doesn't see herself married to, no matter how much the poor man is pining for her. Instead, she's happy to follow all of her mother's instructions on how to behave and live her life, as long as it makes her mother happy. Until one of those decisions leads her down a path she finds is not right for her. Marcán is the one who saves her - and finally, Astrid is able to see who has cared for her all along, and what she has to do to set things in her life right again.

All right, I'll say it right now. I wasn't a fan of Astrid at first. I didn't like her meek attitude when it came to her mother, and how she acted like a bitch to everyone else. That's a cowardly act to follow, and though I understand her need to please her mother, like most people, that was taking it a step too far. A little dignity, woman!

Speaking of her mother, OF COURSE she was from Padraig's clan! Rotted, the whole lot of them! Nothing to redeem those people, no matter what! They talked a big game of how abused some of them were, and how they wanted to be respected as well and loved, but really, they acted awfully when it suited them, too! Not to mention how obsessed Beibhinn was when it came to her supposed religious beliefs (thank God for the priest at the end for putting her in her place)! First Aednat, and then poor Marcán - and in the latter's case, really, it was even worse! She was trying to ruin his life because she was rejected?! Woman, get a life! Classic example of a spoilt, bratty female who just couldn't let go! I pity Kane - he deserved better!

Another character that really shocked me when it came to my reactions was Faolan. I adored him at first, the stutter was really cute and he was adorable, like a puppy! But then he revealed another, more cunning and sort of deceiving side of him, and I was a bit sad with that fact. But that only goes to show how good Ms. York is in making her characters realistic. Just like real people, you never really know what is truly going on inside a person's head, or what their motives for helping you out are. Delightful, even if surprising!

All in all, I enjoyed this book - A LOT! Historical romance at its finest, and spot on to so many references. Ashley York knows how to mix fantasy and facts, and does so effortlessly! The dialogues, the way the people talk and act and think, and the pace, oh my! And don't even get me started on the love scenes - talk about hot and sexual tension thick as hell! I'm definitely reading the rest of the series!

I was so excited to read this story after having just finished book 1 Curse of the Healer. This is the story of Marcan of Clonasra, great warrior and close friend to Diarmuid, King of his clan. Marcan has been in love with Astrid, Diarmuid's sister for as long as he can remember. He had only acted as her protector and friend with hope in his heart that one day she would return his affections.
Manipulated by her scheming mother, Astrid is pushed to marry a man of the neighboring clan but finds he only wants her in his bed and is not a gentleman. When Astrid pushes toward Marcan and realizes her feelings for him, her mother again steps in and accuses Marcan of being a Seer due to his different colored eyes and because Seers where thought to be of the devil.
I am coming to see as I read her books, Ashley York writes exceptional stories, full of history rich in detail and characters that you come to know and care for... With the right amount of adventure, intrigue and romance, this entire series will go on my to be read again shelf. Although part of a series, this book can be read as a stand alone. But trust me, you do not want to miss a moment of the Derbfine series!!

Get ready for brilliant writing, a compelling plot, and a breathtaking romance. This was my second Ashley York book and I’ve read the series completely out of order but that didn’t stop me from falling in love with this story. This can easily be read as a stand- alone but take my word for it, you will be enraptured with this series so you might as well read them all.
Ms. York has a real knack for transporting readers to a different time and place and giving them a window into another way of life. A true literary artisan, she writes characters that come alive. Astrid and Marcan were such authentic characters. There was so much upheaval during this time period and the world around them had a profound impact on their budding relationship. There was lots of danger, suspense, mystery, and passion to keep me riveted. All that drama and forces working against them only accentuated and developed their love story. If you like stories with noble heroes, dramatic adventure, and love against the odds, you’ll fall in love with Eyes of the Seer.

Astrid wants to get married and she feels Padraig would do nicely, even though he is from a different clan. Marcan is second in command of their clan and loves Astride, he is a great warrior and for the time, well educated but he has different colored eyes.
There is a lot going on in this book and it is hard to pick and choose and not give any spoilers. The characters are very life like, fun and intelligent. They are kind and loving and boy, do some of them get their licks in, physical and verbal. The plot has many elements, that need to be swirled into a concise, smooth and even paced tale, which the author does nicely. She has written and amazing and rich book of the 1100's, Gael.

Ashley York's 'Eyes of the Seer,' will have you settling in for a hard-to-put-down read filled with history, suspense and romance!
This is book 2 in the series 'Descendants of the High King'. The first book, 'Curse of the Healer' dealt with Astrid's brother Diarmuid. This is the story of Marcan and Astrid, star-crossed lovers who come together against all odds. This series is made doubly interesting by delving into the beliefs and superstitions of the period, as well as having overlapping time periods between the first and second books. Though it can also be read alone, I do recommend reading 'Curse of the Healer' first. Ashley York is a masterful storyteller, creating in-depth characters that grow throughout the reading. 'Eyes of the Seer' is storytelling at its best!

Ashley York’s newest book is called Eyes of the Seer. The story of Astrid and Marcán was richly written, bringing us back to the time of legends and myths. This is the second book in the series (Curse of the Healer being the first.) The story runs roughly during the same span of time, but focuses on Marcán and Astrid.

An overbearing mother determined to get her way - no matter what - is the crux of Astrid’s life. Her mother wants what she wants and is not above stirring up trouble to get it. Astrid wonders why her brother has not done anything about setting up a marriage for her, so she follows her mother’s suggestion and tries to find a connection with a man from the next town over. Meanwhile, her brother’s best friend Marcán has been in love with Astrid forever, but forever is a really long time when she doesn’t even recognize he loves her. He protects her and helps her and is there for her, yet she seems to find him more of a pain than anyone she might be interested in. The story is a wonderful love story of seemingly star crossed lovers. Throw in a man and a woman who will do anything to get what they want and you have a great story of love and hope against the odds.

Eyes of the Seer by Ashley York is a great read.

Marcán of Clonasra is considered marked by the devil just because he has two coloured eyes even though he's the descendant of Brian Boru, and has the bloodlines of kings. All he's ever wanted is to be known as a fierce warrior fighting alongside his best friend and king Diarmuid. For as long as he can remember he's been in love with Astrid, Diarmuid's sister.
Astrid is young and easily influenced by her mother who manipulates her in finding her own husband and happiness, she can't wait on her brother to make a match he's to busy with kingly duties. She makes a mistake allowing her mother to bully her in choosing, and pursues a man from a neighbouring village who's far from descent and honourable. Marcán is all that is kindness and honourable helps her understand that he's a man that cares about her and wants her happiness. Her almost rape has her realizing she was pursuing the wrong man. A man her mother was forcibly pushing her to marry. Her love for Marcán finally revealed has the young couple sealing their vows by spending the night together. Her vindictive mother will not be thwarted and will do all in her power to tear them apart. To save the man she loves Astrid has no choice but to succumb to her mothers wishes the threat of accusing Marcán as a seer is punishable by death! Will the newfound love that Astrid and Marcán be jeopardized my her vindictive and bitter mother?
Ashley York has done an excellent job in this well written story. If you have a couple of hours to spend this is a wonderful story to get lost in this is the one, you will not be able to put it down.
Curse of the Healer is book one and Dairmuid and Aednat's story Eyes of the Seer is book two and Marcán and Astrid 's story, both can be read as stand-alones in my opinion but best read in order.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and NetGalley for my honest unbiased opinion.

Eyes of the Seer by Ashley York is yet another mesmerizing hit by this author. THE DERBFINE series, #2, but can be read as a stand alone. # 1, CURSE OF THE HEALER. I was enthralled by the cast of characters, the plot and the writing style of Ms. York. She never disapoints, and knows how to weave fiction with history, seamlessly and effortlessly. The cast of characters are believable and seem sincere to me. It felt as if I was there with the cast, watching their daily lives, their struggles and their truimphs. The conflict was enough to hold my interest and kept me guessing right up to the end. Danger, suspense, mystery, romance, and passion make this story a magnificent Medeival Romance. In other words I absolutely loved "Eyes of the Seer".
Ashley York is a talented author whose stories will keep the reader suspended and glued to the pages of a great book. Way to go, Ms. York! ! You don't wish to miss this fantastic series.
EYES OF THE SEER will have you turning pages, I shed a few tears for the heroine. Her mother was a such witch, not literally, but you get my draft, mean mother to everyone not just her beautiful daughter. I can't wait to see what Ashley York has in store for her readers next in this amazing series. Pick up your copy today!

Ashley York's second book in her Derbfine series, Eyes of the Seer, was a wonderful mix of rich history and gallant romance! This author adds an interesting layer to this series by having each story deal with a superstition found in the medieval period. While Marcán of Clonascra comes from a noble bloodline and is a greatly respected warrior, his being born with two different colored eyes labels him a seer and to some that is the equivalent of being evil, even though his actions are the very opposite. Ashley York is masterful in her use of strategic character revelations as she develops Astrid, the heroine, from self centered and reckless to brave and loyal in this work. As the build up to Astrid recognizing that Marcán was the love she had been looking for all along took place Ms. York carried this book forward with lots of suspense and no shortage of her depraved antagonists looking to fulfill their own agendas. Eyes of the Seer is storytelling at its best presenting a top-notch read!

Astrid thought herself in love with Pádraig until he showed his true colours, but he is not ready to give up his conquest. Marcán has waited a long time to be able to tell Astrid that he loves her, but the unrest in their clans makes claiming the object of his desire almost impossible, especially because of Astrid’s mother who has her own agenda. Will true love prevail? Will Astrid see who’s the better man?

EYES OF THE SEER is book two in the Derbfine series, and although I felt that I had missed little things, it stands perfectly on its own. Set in 1095, Ashley York paints a vivid picture of Medieval Ireland, and what must have been very extensive research on the author’s part really paid off. Unlike many novels of this type, Ms. York doesn’t not romanticise the era, but presents it pretty much as it must have been, warts and all, and I felt like I was back in time, which made me wonder why I read historical romance, as they were such difficult times for women. I also appreciated that Ms. York includes a glossary – if brief, it is nonetheless helpful, and also the pronunciation of the main characters’ name, for which I am ever so grateful.

Astrid is a bit naïve, reckless, and somewhat foolish, but thankfully realises it soon enough; I thought she would have me tearing my hair out, but no. Astrid is, however, a dutiful daughter to her deluded, selfish, and spiteful mother; the latter still makes my skin crawl. Although I thought I knew where the story was going, I was only slightly right, if I may say, which was very good indeed. Story of clan clashes interest me only mildly, but that’s how it was, and they do affect the romance on every level. The romance was lovely: I felt the love between Marcán and Astrid; it was tender and passionate but the love scenes, of which there was just enough and not too much, did not overshadow the affection they had for each other. THE EYES OF THE SEER is thankfully not about superstitions and magic, which I had feared, but about the negative perceptions which cause people to hurt others. The writing is excellent, the dialogues felt genuine because of the impeccable vocabulary. I also very much appreciated Ms. York light touch when it came to conveying the dialect and accent: it never felt like a demonstration of how much Gaelic the author could put in a sentence, but just terms sprinkled here and there to give some welcome authenticity to the dialogues – without making them heavy.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

While Historical Romance is the name of the game on my blog, rare are the stories that take place in Ireland. EYES OF THE SEER is different in that regard, however. Set in 1095 in Eire (Ireland), this is the story of Astrid and Marcán of Clonascra, both from the same clan but meant to marry others. The title of the book comes from Marcán's eyes.

All in all, I enjoyed this book beginning to end! Historical romance at its finest, and decidedly spot on to so many different references. Ashley York is one of my favorite authors. She knows how to mix historical facts and fantasy seamlessly. She keeps the dialogue interesting, the worldbuilding detailed and the interaction sublime! And don't even get me started on the love scenes - Bring on da heat!

Of course, we have the requisite HEA/HFN as all comes out right in the end but it's a grand adventure all along the way! Fans of medieval romance set in Ireland will adore this book!

Eyes of the Seer is book 2 of the Warrior Kings series by Ashley York. The story is as old as time, based in 1095 Ireland. The great Warrior, Marcan (Mork-an), carries the Blood Line of the legendary High King Brian Brou and like his predecessor, a complex, highly skilled warrior, with many hidden skills that come to the fore as needed. Toss in a beautiful lass who happens to be the sister of his best friend, and her bitter, manipulative mother who is constantly causing strife and chaos with her meddling, manipulative ways. What are you left with, a story riddled with deceit, secrecy, thrills and romance. Ashley York provides a very detailed love story that many can immediately identify with. She pulls you into the story where you are witness to the overwhelming hurdles the characters must overcome to find their happily ever after. Easy to read and enjoyable throughout. I’d highly recommend this to lovers of history, early Ireland, and strong warriors you can’t help but fall in love with. 😍

Astrid is sick of her mother’s belittling goes along with her mother's plan marry to have her marry into Clan Meic Murchadha. The man she has chosen to marry turns out to be less honorable they she believed, but she keeps this to herself to insure there is no trouble in the clan. Marcan of Clonascra prowess as a warrior has earned him great respect. Astrid has known Marcan a long time he’s her brother Diarmuid’s best friend and they are both very protective of her. Marcan has been in love with her for a while, but it takes Astrid to come to realize the man right in front of her is the one she wants, but her mother has other plans her heart set on her daughter getting into Padraig's clan. True happiness awaits them, but only if they can put a stop to her mother’s plans. Another great story by Ashley York!!!

I am voluntarily submitting my honest review after receiving an ARC from NetGalley.

For fans of Irish history, this novel is a fantastic transportation back to the days of the sons of the great ard ri like Brian Boru. The second of the derbfine series, Eyes of the Seer can be read as a standalone novel, but I think it is best enjoyed after Curse of the Healer. The characters are compelling and the plot is dramatic and lively. The vibrant world of Ireland during Europe's Dark Ages vividly comes to life in this novel. Although some of the names are cumbersome and the titles and clan structure a bit difficult for Anglophiles to master, the glossary at the back is helpful and a good place to start for readers unfamiliar with medieval Ireland. This novel is a great place to leave the modern world behind and lose yourself for a few hours, and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

There are some vague characterizations here that stretches the reader's credulity. Astrid, for one, will follow blindly the dictates of her cold and indifferent mother and thus put herself in danger of getting raped just to please Beibhinn (who for years since their births never showed any affection for her children)? The other is the stuttering voyeur Faolan who has his own agenda. Then finally, Beibhinn's motives for all her actions that all stemmed from the bitterness of the past and trapped her in that timeline for the rest of her married life and colored her relationship with her husband and children. Also the title has very little bearing on the main plot ~ just a superstitious phrase about Marcan's mismatched eyes and the perfect excuse/alibi for Beibhinn's warped mind to instigate a witch~burning.

Eyes of the Seer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️by Ashley York

Although, this story occurs in ancient Ireland, there are important narrative threads in this read that have an unfortunate tie with contemporary themes of today.

Marcan of Clonascra is best friends with Diarmuid the king and thoroughly enchanted with Diarmuid’s sister Astrid. Astrid does not see Marcan as anything more than dominant pain. Marcan was born with two different colored eyes and thus many believe him to be a Seer a person in league with the devil.

This is the crux of the contemporary parallel. The strong hatred for people that are different and sometimes Love stands in front of us but we do not see it.

This is a love story that has quite a few twists especially regarding Beibhinn, Astrid’s mother. I thought Ms York gave us a very interesting experience in this read. I would recommend this book.

This book has a great storyline to entangle you in the drama of a romance set in Ancient Ireland.

The historical setting was a perfect background for the drama-filled, toe-curling excitement that takes place. There is a little bit of romance, a little bit of backstabbing and a lot of drama. The ending was set out so well. The character development was realistic as we slowly saw the true nature of the characters being exposed as Marcan and Astrid started seeing them for who they really were.

The plot development was really well done, leaving the perfect amount of intrigue and question to keep the reader hooked. And let's not forget the sexy scenes that build some extra intrigue and excitement.

Incredible! A mind capturing gift of words that leaves you wanting more with each page. As the story unfolds you will run the gamut of emotions, however, the emotions will not be what grabs you. It instead will be the absolutely captivating way the author has of writing a story that pulls you in and keeps you immersed. I lost track of all that was going on around me while reading this book. I must say; I shall look for more by the author! You will definitely not be disappointed in this read so buy the book and take time for you uninterrupted to read and just enjoy! I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna Swedenmom

Astrid and Marcán are great characters, the story line, and plot are well done. The writing from this lady is beyond great, she has the ability to bring you into a story. Every word and detail is done with great care.
Astrid is exactly what Marcán needs, and Marcán does everything he can to show her what love really is. He is loving and wants her to see what she can have and need in him. She is manipulated by her mother, spoiled, and needs a spanking at times. Everything you want in a book, mystery, twists, and love.

If you want to read a book that is real to the history, the struggles and what women really suffered at times then you will love this book.

Wonderful page-turner of a romance. York dishes a perfect snapshot of clan life complete with the intrigue and rivalry. The brogue brings the time period to life, along with historical elements in clothing and the clan hierarchy. The main characters, Marcán and Astrid, are caught up in a vortex of longing to be together while being pulled apart by the underhanded and selfish dealings of other characters. It has good characters I loved to love, and villains I loved to despise. This book kept me up late to finish it.

Why?

Although I'm sure the names, titled and places are authentic it makes for difficult reading. It's hard to keep up with the characters if you can't properly call them by name when reading. Not a bad book but it is a bit of a pain to read unless you want to sit with a cheat sheet beside you.

Historical

I enjoyed the historical aspects as that is my passion. The notstory whittled my appetite for more. Unfortunately seaquels rarely include the same characters but we shall see. Do not disappoint me author.

Another fine story of ancient Ireland. Superstition, warring clans. brutality and a vicious woman make this an interesting tale. With fine writing and good characterization, it is a treat to read.
