Harriet Harper #2

The Hidden Grave

Rate this book
Still reeling from the aftermath of solving the Creek Killer investigation, Cold Case detective, Harriet ‘Harri’ Harper has returned to Eugene, Oregon to tend to something closer to home: her private quest to find out what really happened to her sister, Lauren Harper, who disappeared almost twenty years ago.

A serial killer has been stalking young teens and dumping them in the same woods where her sister was last seen. Could the two cases be somehow linked? When Harri, along with FBI profiler Jake Tepesky, gets involved in the search for a missing fifteen-year-old boy, they uncover a decades-old conspiracy, one that someone wants very much to keep secret—at all costs.

As more victims die and few clues surface, Harri and Jake’s investigation collides with that of the Eugene Sheriff’s department in a clash that threatens both their careers. Can Harri find the evidence to stop the killer, or will she become his next victim?

[The Hidden Grave] - Dominika Best - (Oregon)
Harriet Harper Book #3
3★
I can't really say that I liked or disliked the book. It was well written and easy to follow but it left a lot of unanswered questions in the end. I'm finding that more and more authors are doing this now. Almost seems like a ploy to sell the next book to the reader that is hoping to find out what happened in the last book. Overall, it's not a bad read except for the lack of a real ending. I realize that it is book 3 of an ongoing series but there should have been a better conclusion to this one before moving on to the next one. I was left feeling like I just became a part of a marketing scheme with no guarantee that the next one or the one after that, would answer any of the unanswered questions. Putting my soapbox away now:)

My spouse read this novel and here's her review:

This novel is Book Two of Detective Harri's journey to find her missing sister. Building off the first book in the series, it is a good continuation of leads coming fast and furious. Each year Harri takes time off and journeys back to where her sister vanished. This year she has brought a specialist team with her. However, the body they find is a fresh one - a young boy. From here Harri hears that the seventeen year old son of friends is also missing so she turns her focus to the hopefully living away from the certainly dead.
This novel has a good pace and character development. I'm looking forward Book Three.

The second in the series and a more enjoyable book for me. The first instalment came with a lot of what seemed to be non important office politics that held back the pace. This time the plot focus is much more on the case in hand with only a little side-line interference from other officers. The central thread of the book flows seamlessly from book #1 and is engrossing but often the circumstances did feel somewhat contrived. The investigation by an L.A. officer in an other jurisdiction felt implausible too but served the story. Moving directly on to the next instalment.

I quit reading this book at about the 18% point. The mystery was taking shape and moving along well, when I encountered this passage..."Her breath caught when she saw him. His skin glistened from the dampness of his recent shower. His brown hair curled at the top of his white shirt and his rolled-up sleeves exposed his deeply bronzed forearms. Harri's heart skipped a beat..." I suppressed my urge to vomit as I concluded I am probably NOT the target demographic for this bodice-ripper!
I will be actively avoiding all other books by this author.

I really enjoyed the second book of this series. In the first book, The Creek Killer, Detective Harri mentions her missing sister numerous times. In 1994 Harri's sister goes off to college in Oregon and disappears. This book follows Harri to Oregon in her yearly quest for answers about what happened to her sister. Bodies start showing up and soon Harri is looking for a different missing person altogether. I am hoping the who is discovered in book 3.

Well written but still not all the answers

I'm rather irritated that the book ends without solving the case of who killed Lauren. I'm getting so fed up with authors doing this just so they can sell their next book. Yes she finds Lauren. But the actual crime & who committed it aren't in this book. I think authors are getting either lazy or greedy. Leaving a book unfinished so you need to buy the next book. And then in the next book going over stuff we just read in the book that should have included a real end. And if anybody buys book #3, you really won't know the whole story unless you have read this book first. So the author guarantees getting paid for 2 books that should have been 1!!!

Lauren's story.

Harri goes on her yearly pilgrimage to Oregon to look for the remains of her sister, Lauren, who disappeared many years ago. This time, she has a team of experts in finding human remains. Before they can really get a start looking, they find the remains of a young boy who had been killed recently. That puts an end to Harri's search for Lauren, but begins her search for another young man who happens to be the son of the guy who was with Lauren when she disappeared. She can't let him and his wife go through the pain that she and her parents went through after Lauren disappeared, and she promised to turn over every stone to find the missing boy, no matter if she loses her job because of it. With the help of Lauren's best friend and former FBI profiler, Jake, Harri digs deeper into the case, vowing to find not just the missing boy but also what happened to Lauren. This book was sad and has a bit of horror pertaining to some of the cases being worked. It's not for the squeamish. I will read the next book.

A cops sister was missing for a long long time. Every year she went back to the town where she disappeared from to continue to look for information about the case. This year she had others helping her to search . A cidaver dog found a grave but it wasnt her sister. It was a young boy. After having one of the officers from that town wanting to help her to continue to search. They found that young boys were missing and may have all going to a camp or they may have already been found dead. She eventually found a strong lead concerning her sister. A picture of her sister and a group of young boys from awhile back. Can her and her partner find out who any of these boys were after all this time. Could anyone of them still be alive.

I could not even begin to finish this book. The author needs to get her facts straight and needs a good editor. At 2% in it said Oregon was landlocked when in fact about an hour west of the locations mentioned is the Oregon coast on the Pacific Ocean.
Then we have the Oregon State student finishing at the University of Oregon, possibly he changed schools? For some reason the Eugene, Oregon city police are investigating a disappearance in the National Forest, not realistic. It would be the Lane or Linn County Sheriff's Department. Then the National Forest suddenly became a State Park. I made it 23% of the way through the book and gave up in disgust.

This is the second book in the Harri series. Harri is a detective from Los Angeles. But this book takes place near Eugene, Oregon. In 1994 a freshman college student disappears on a hiking trip with two friends near Eugene. The missing girl was Harri's sister Lauren. Each year Harri comes to Oregon to look for her sister.

I don't usually read "thrillers" so this was a book that keeps me interested but nervous and not my first choice. It was written well but my lower rating is because I don't care for that type of writing.

Follow-up to The Creek Killer

Again journeying into the past, in this case the disappearance of Harri’s sister, missing since the Fall of 1994.

As she continues her quest into the Federal forestlands of Oregon, missing teenage boys-cum-homicides collide with her search.

Domenika Best ties up her plots neatly (although editing is not the best) and leads into the next case adroitly.

Excellent read! #2 in Harri Harper series.
Harri and Jake Tepesky go to Eugene for Harri’s annual pilgrimage in her search for her long-missing sister, Lauren, who disappeared 25 (?) years earlier when our hiding her first year of college.

While there, the son if one of the guys who’d been with Lauren on that hike also disappears, and Harri & Jake get involved in the search to find Dan and bring him home. Mid-search, they begin to wonder if the old and new disappearances might be linked.

Lost & Found

A cop uses vacation time to search for her sister. The sister disappeared decades earlier without a trace. But when the body of a boy is found she is drawn into an ugly world or abuse, trafficking and exploitation.

This was a pretty good read. Harri is not especially professional and the other cops are dolts. The ending is not completely satisfying hut it is not bad. 2.5 stars

A goal fulfilled

This is the second Harriet Harper. This mystery takes you to different people and places in search for Harri's sister who has been missing for 25 years. Many things are discovered and followed. Well written - you want to keep on reading and not lay the book down.

Another very good read. Am getting to know and really like the main characters. Though the continuing mystery introduced in the first book is resolved here, there are the developing relationships that ensure I will eagerly look forward to reading the next in the series and a new mystery for the lead character to solve.

Great Adventure

Harry's sister has been missing for 25 years in one of the Oregon Forests. Every year she makes the trek to interview people who may have seen her. A missing 16 year old, and a couple of dead teenagers gives her new clues into her sister's disappearance. This thriller moved fast and it's hard to put down!

Fast-paced and intriguing. Not having read the first book, I didn’t feel as if I needed to in order to understand and enjoy this one. The author kept the story moving, and I didn’t want to put it down. The ending wrapped things up nicely with just enough of a bread crumb to entice me onto the next book.

Awesome

This book is mind blowing. Awesome, scintillating, thrilling, too good and highly irresistible to put down even for a single moment. I appreciate Ms. Dominika Best for coming up with one of the most memorable crime thriller. I couldn't find even a single dull moment. It's a brilliant page Turner.

HALF CIRCLE

Harri and Jake are going to look for her abducted sister in Oregon. What they find is "history repeats itself". More kids disappearing and they start the adventure.

Love Harri's commitment to find her sister, no matter what is happening. Good characters and good story. Recommended

Thriller

Harriet Harper has spent 25 years searching for her missing sister Lauren. This year she has her sister's best friend from high school, Jake, to help her. Will this be the year? Their search goes off the rails on day one. A fantastic thriller with an engaging plot and well rounded characters.

Intriguing book. Interesting characters. Up to date storyline depicting what’s happening everyday in this country. Nice to see a story that comes up with solutions to today’s problems and in fictional life people who keep their word. Enjoyed this book just bought the next in the series.

3.5***

A decent read with a horrible message. A message that no one wants to think about or even talk about. Unfortunately this exact scenario happens everyday, and everywhere. Throwaway kids that very few cares about.

Good clean read. You can write an exciting mystery without foul language. This book is proof of that. Enjoyed the read. The subject of this book is appropriate for young readers with some maturity. Of course, it can be read by adults of all ages.
