Ghost in the machine By Katie O'Sullivan

Katie O’Sullivan’s addition to the Dark Secrets Anthology, Ghost in the Machine follows a recently-murdered gal, her ghost-seeing sister, a ghost-whisperer Coroner and a hunky skeptical state trooper.

When Cameran McNeil wakes up on the side of a road in Cape Cod, she has no memory of how she came to be there and can’t recall anything of her life before she woke up. She’s lying next to a garbage bag that has the obvious body of a woman in it. Just when she’s set to run and find help, it arrives, in the guise of trooper Jack MacDonald and his partner. They ignore her as they view the bag. When it’s opened Cameron recognizes the woman’s face because… it’s hers. But that doesn’t make sense. She’s alive, isn’t she?

Dr Sam Miller is a coroner with a “special talent”: he can hear the voices of the dead, so when a Jane Doe shows up on his autopsy table, and then the women in question, namely Cameron, begins talking to him, he knows he has to help her discover who murdered her and why. He sends Jack to Cameron’s sister Maggie, to notify her of the death.

Maggie’s had a rough night. Her house has been burgled, her sister isn’t returning any of her call, and now her sister’s attorney is at her door, demanding to know where the “little black book” Cameron gave her sister for safe keeping is – to which Maggie has no idea.

Into this Jack walks, all six +plus feet of hotness and swagger and Maggie falls like a ton of bricks for the trooper.

I hate spoilers, so I won’t say anything more about the plot, but that little black book of Cameron’s is the key to finding who killed her.

Like all of Katie O’Sullivan’s books I was sucked into the story from the first page. Who is this women who can’t remember who she is and how she wound up on the side of the road? A great question, to be sure for a romantic suspense story. The fact it includes a ghost makes it a perfect read for Halloween.

Ms O’Sullivan’s story telling style captures your attention from the get-go. When you read along, you feel you know her characters, would like to be friends with them in real life, and root for them til the end and beyond.

Jack Macdonald is a man – if I weren’t already married – I’d like to find for myself!!! Maggie (whose real name is Margaret – like me!) is an independent, smart and sassy gal with a gift that makes her even more special.

This addition to the anthology was a 5star read for me because it hit all my reader buttons: great story told well, characters I care about, and an HEA.
Brava!

A tiny coastal town, a woman running away, a misplaced cop and a ghost with a mystery make up with tale of intrigue.

When writer Bree Blaylock shows up in Midnight Cove, intent to finish her book and get her life together, the tiny cottage she rents from a surly local businessman proves anything but the quiet, peaceful place she needs. It’s inhabited by a ghost of a young man who has no idea why he’s there, how he got there, or what he’s meant to do.

Bree should be frightened but she’s not. Apparently ghost are something she’s seen and dealt with in her life and when this one comes to her in a dream, she resolves to find out what his story is.

Bree’s neighbor, Jake, one of the local cops, is instantly smitten with her and they begin a relationship. But Bree has baggage in the form of an ex, abusive boyfriend.

A murder 40 years in the past may be the key to unlocking who Steven, Bree’s ghost is, and she enlists Jake’s help in solving the mystery.

Along the way, both learn all in not what it seems in the quiet, sleepy town.

This was a really good story and hit so many high marks for me. As part of this collection, it’s a standout.

4 stars. Brava!

The Dark Secrets Anthology is just what I needed to get me in the mood for Halloween. Each story delivers plenty of romance and most of the books offer dark surprises and suspense that will keep your heart racing. The black cat, Spook, makes an appearance in every story. Below, I’ve highlighted my four favorites.

Something Wicked This Way Comes/Sharon Coady
Winter’s first two marriages ended—and the men died mysteriously not long afterward. After slowly learning to trust again, she meets a man, falls in love and marries again. Right after returning from her honeymoon, she learns he is sleeping with someone at work. Her friend Aria is always there for her. But bad things always seem to happen when she’s around. This is a super creepy story with a lot of stream of consciousness thoughts that both of the characters have that makes for a mysterious and haunting story.

Midnight Cover/Pandora Spocks
This was my favorite story in the series. Bree flees for a quiet house in South Carolina to finish her novel—and to escape an abusive boyfriend in Florida. She ends walking into more than she bargains for, renting a house with a resident ghost and meeting a hot police officer named Jake. This is Halloween thriller will deliver the desired chill down the spine--complete with ghosts, scary characters, dark stormy nights, and tricks and treats.

That Spooktacular Kiss (Kissed by Fate 3)/ Tamara Ferguson
Ashley and Brian are about to start college when all hell breaks loose in their households. Just when their romance is budding, their families must whisk them out of town suddenly. For ten years, neither of them understands what all that was about. Was there really an affair between their parents going on? Did their friend’s father commit suicide or was he murdered? When they return to their hometown, they are instantly drawn together like a moth to a flame. But their romance is still threatened by the dark secret from the past that they don’t yet fully understand. This is an exciting and romantic read with lots of surprise twists.

Romance by the Book/ Amy Manemann
Chloe is overly protective of Sage, the teenage daughter she’s raising on her own. When she meets the handsome Graham Baxter in a coffee shop, she soon learns he’s the father of her daughter’s best friend. Both of them have suffered from broken hearts. Graham lost his wife in a car accident. Chloe hooked up with a man who had no interest in raising his daughter. The romance between Graham and Chloe starts over coffee and intensifies as they work on a project for a Halloween event together. Graham is so sweet with Chloe, with the girls, and during another incident with a troubled teen, which made him seem super ideal-man-likeable to me. Very enjoyable read.

I have read 4 books out of this collection so far. They've all been easy to read and great for relaxing and tuning out the world.

The Devils Own is a fast paced read with determined characters and an exciting plot. The chemistry between the love interests was obvious, and I liked the relationships between the protagonist and those around her. I found myself racing through to see how it ended.

Something Wicked This Way Comes is a suspenseful story of an unfaithful relationship told from both the partner's points of view, which made it interesting because you could get inside both of their heads. It had many unexpected moments and twists.

Midnight Cove was my favourite of the books I've read in the collection. It struck a good balance between the romance and the mystery and I was eager to see how the story played out. The characters were likeable and it was well paced.

Romance by the Book is the most light-hearted of the books I've read. Light on the suspense, it's more of a sweet romance, which I enjoyed. Careful though, it mentions a lot of baked goods, and you may find yourself reaching for treats while reading more than once!

This review only includes a review on Romance by the Book, and I will add to it as I read the books!

Romance By the Book by Amy Manemann is a light romantic suspense for those that read a lot of romantic suspense. It is a great story of two single parents getting to know each other and trying to move on from their pasts while raising teenage daughters in a small town. Throw in a mystery that turns out as a happy ending and you have the great makings of a Hallmark Movie!

Manemann's writing style is smooth and easy with down to earth, real characters just getting through life a day at a time. I enjoyed watching the romance between Graham and Chloe build and really enjoyed the scenes that played out after the Halloween Party in the story. Full of steamy passion, it was the icing on top to this story in my opinion!

If you are looking for a sweet romantic suspense that ends with feel good moments, give Romance By the Book a read! You will love it!

So far I've read four of the books, Hunting Love, Secret Fantasies, Little White Lies and Ghost in the Machine. I loved them all. They were all very suspenseful and romantic. Great Halloween reads. They were all different but they all had something spooky in common. These authors have a way of writing that sucks you into the story. I'm a big fan of Chantel Rhondeau's writing and have read all of her books and highly recommend this book. I also think I have found some new authors whose other books I will be checking out. I will be reading the other stories in this book.

I have received ARC copies of these books. This is my voluntary review.

This was a expertly culled box set that was full of mystery, suspense and spook. My favorite was Ghost in the Machine by Katie O'Sullivan, but the selections were flawlessly edited and all worked as a whole. I also loved how these were not novellas. These were full books. These were all new authors for me, and the set as enticed me enough to seek out more from all the authors. It didn't have a dud within all these stories! That's pretty awesome and very rare. I actually would read this again when I have time. It was a lot of fun to absorb.

My three favorite stories in this book are Something Wicked this Way Comes by Sharon Cody, Ghost in the Machine by Katie O’Sullivan, and, even though it didn’t quite feel like a stand alone story, the main characters’ stories do wrap up, That Spooktacular Kiss by Tamara Ferguson. But I enjoyed all of the stories. And I like that the stories in this anthology were all long enough to actually provide a decent amount of character development.

Individual books from the set of Dark Secrets edition that I have read so far, can't wait to read the rest of the books in this awesome set.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Sharon Cody, I have read all of her books and each one is better than the last. She has become a great book writer. I actually personally know her and am very impressed. This last one Something Wicked This Way Comes has a Halloween theme, very intriguing, keep your interest the entire way through, she had a great mystery plot with some very humorous moments with a few twist and turns. Definitely keep your interest so well you couldn’t put is down.

The Devil’s Own by Angela Stevens, was the first time I have read any of her books and was very impressed. It had suspense, drama and excitement. Don't want to give away anything but the beginning of the book had a lot of chuckles. Just enough detail to not be boring and a great ending. The book had a short reflection of Halloween.

Little White Lies by Jude Ourard, was the first time I have read any of her books. Good start moved to Halloween very fast. It was a bit boring but it still had enough to keep you interested. It was not one of those I can’t put it down books. She used the word the Fuck word a lot and to me it takes away from the reading, there is a proper time for the word. She did a good job tying together the beginning Halloween theme to the end of the book. The name of the book was also a theme throughout Little White Lies.

A wonderful box set collection. There’s plenty of suspense, romance, and a dash of spooky!

Ghost in the Machine by Katie O’Sullivan was one of my favorite books in this set.
The beginning of the novel drew me in and the story didn’t let go. The book isn’t too long which made for a quick, suspenseful, and romantic read.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Maggie and Jack, but the other characters were all memorable including a ghost, a coroner who talks with dead people, and Spook the cat.
Ms. O’Sullivan’s new novel ties in nicely with some of her previous works, which I appreciate, but Ghost in the Machine is definitely a stand-alone.

Midnight Cove was another favorite of mine. The story is intriguing and well written. The main character is an author named Bree who moves into a haunted lake house to finish writing her novel. There’s great mystery, an interesting ghost, family drama, and an excellent romantic plot. The novel is suspenseful and steamy and the hero, Jake, is a charming and protective police officer in the small town of Midnight Cove.

I found some new-to-me authors and read new books from other favorite authors including Tamara Ferguson. Great box set! I highly recommend this romantic suspense box set collection.

I have read three books in this set so far and can’t wait to read the rest. How amazing these books are.
Little White Lies… is a page turner. Smooth reading and you just can’t stop once you start. I read it at one sitting because I couldn’t put it down.
Something Wicked This Way Comes… is a very lovely book with very unexpected things… SHHHHH I am not telling. Just when you thing you know it all, or have it all figured out. Something else has you on the edge of your seat.
Hunting Love…starts out like most books but once you get into the meat of the story you are taken in and can’t stop reading until the end.
I can’t wait for the rest of the books these were amazing. You should get your copies NOW before everyone buys them up.

This collection of romance suspense is a nice way to spend your reading hours. My favorite was Tamara Ferguson’s That Spooktacular Kiss. Under the constraints of word limitations associated with anthologies, Ferguson still manages to successfully convey the story of 2 people who find each other after being abruptly and tragically separated 10 years earlier. This story is part of a series revolving around a human trafficking ring and though that back story isn’t resolved, the main characters’ story is. Ferguson is able to deliver a satisfying story despite the word constraints. I hope she takes the story and fleshes is out as only Ferguson can do.

Romantic relationships

This is a wonderful box set of various types of romance from suspense, contemporary and paranormal. I especially loved Secret Fantasies by Stacy Eaton as this story kept me riveted from start to finish and I can't wait for the next installment. All of these stories are well worth reading and I plan to read these again. Can't wait for the next installments.

I Read Angela Stevens’ ‘The Devil’s Own - Bowker Street.’
This is the first book in the author’s new HELL BENT series. It takes us into a run-down, deprived area outside of Chicago called Bowker Street. Here, gang boss, Kane Munch holds court over his sixty or more criminal acolytes in a decaying ex-motel complex: a no-go locale for police or people who are not members of the Bowker Street Devils.
Main character Cassidy and Ryker, her 24 year-old brother, were born into the gang- and its criminal activities. Cassidy is approaching her eighteenth birthday and people cannot fail to notice her angular lines turning into curves. Womanizer Munch has noticed – and that creates the problem of how to avoid him taking Cassidy as his next concubine. There’s only one way, and that is to leave the Devils, but that creates another problem. There’s only one way out of the Devils and that’s through the cemetery gates. They have to try. One false move to create suspicion of what they are about would mean death by retribution from Kane. It’s a risk they have to take; they have Falcon on their side to help them. Getting out and staying alive becomes their focus and the essence of the story. A powerful recipe of romance and suspense, well seasoned by a master-chef of the genre. This one will have you excited and the hairs on your neck tingling at the same time.

Ugh... what's with all the mixus with the characters' ages?

H and h met when she was 14, and he was nearly 20
Now they meet again, and she's 17 whereas he's said to be 27
Then, the first meeting was supposed to have happened 6 years ago
Next, the H suddenly is 24 and not 27

Keep track, woman! I'm dropping this now, sorry.

Little White Lies by Jude Ouvrard

Hunter Reed decides she needs a change of location after her boyfriend Jared breaks up with her and begins dating one of her friends and no one in their circle having the courage to tell her about what was going on. Hunter moves to Portland for a job at Hart & Miller Media Inc as a graphic designer.

Soon Hunter meets new friends Emma and Xander who are also her co-workers and invite her out to a club on Halloween where she falls for a mysterious stranger wearing a yellow hoodie that he gives her at the end of the night but his identity is still hidden under her costume.

When Hunter begins working she meets her new boss, Braden Hart and she can't deny the chemistry the two have but is she ready to mix business and pleasure?

I enjoyed this story but I did find Hunter almost too naive with how she obviously affected the men around her. I think this was because of her break up with Jared but I was surprised she wasn't more aware of the feelings that Xander had for her.

I liked that Hunter was trying to make it on her own as it was obvious that she came from money but she wanted to make her own success and not rely on her parents.

At the Halloween Party Hunter meets "Elvis" and you can tell she has chemistry with him but has no idea who he is and nobody says anything to her about him. When she meets Braden at work she can't deny the chemistry but she is scared about the reaction of others with them working together.

Braden himself is just out of a relationship that wasn't any good for him but he doesn't hesitate in getting involved. It was clear right from the beginning how much he cared for Hunter and wasn't worried about what anyone else thought.

I was a little weirded out with the friendship between Xander and Hunter as it was obvious to me how much he cared about Hunter. When Hunter started dating Braden things got a little tense and Xander was mad at Hunter and still didn't seem to want to give up on her.

I wasn't surprised at what was revealed at Thanksgiving as I thought that from the beginning. In a way I wasn't shocked at how Hunter reacted due to her past but I was definitely sad at what happened after she left.

I liked how remorseful Braden was and how hard he worked at putting everything back together. I was super mad at Xander after an event as he really ruined a good friendship and ruined Hunter's trust.

This entire collect was a fun and spook read perfect for ghost story, horror or Halloween lovers. The stories were diverse and all full length. It was such a fun read. While as with all anthologies some stories worked more for me than others, I was not disappointed with any story I this collection.
In That Spooktacular Kiss (by Tamara Ferguson) we find a family mystery that spans two families, one couple and years of speculation. I enjoyed the mystery of this story, what really happened to that man? How did it impact everyone back then and how can it still impact this couple year later. The twists and turns really made this story unpredictable and the ending was great! I loved the depth of the mystery and the connection these characters had for each other. It was a wonderful second chance romance. 4 stars.

In Little White Lies, Jude Ouvrard challenges both the reader and her characters with just how far a little white lie can go, with just how much to can hurt. I enjoyed the buildup in this story and thought that it was a nice slow story that had a bang of an ending. I also liked that there were times when I was reading it that I couldn’t quite place my preference for a characters because the lies that were given were deceiving yet truthful (if that makes sense). I liked enjoyed reading this. 3.5 stars.

In Ghost in the Machine (by Katie O’Sullivan) the readers is transported into a very suspenseful romance. I had an instant pull to both the story and the characters. I found their attraction both steamy and palpable. I am also a sucker for animals so I was immediately in love with Spook. This story was a classic ghost story, well written and enjoyable. After reading this story I want to go back and read the rest of this author’s works. 4.5 stars.

Haunting Love starts out a bit slowly with a built up to a wonderful plot. The characters were very memorable and fun to read about and the dialogue within the story was great. I liked the way the author decided to introduce the reader to her world and characters, it really pulled me into the story when I was undecided. I think this story is aptly titled (without giving away details) and it was fun to read. 3.5 stars.

Secret Fantasies
Colin was assigned to watch over Heather after her son was taken and drugged. Little did they both know the depth of the situation. While protecting Heather, a lot happened. One thing is Colin fell for Heather. Heather wasn't sure of her feelings at first. She thought she cares for him because he was protecting her.
I love this story. It was filled with romance and is action packed. And the "house". I couldn't put it down. Secret Fantasies is book#3. It is a stand alone with a HEA. However, i suggest you read the first 2 books. They at just as amazing. I forgot about Grace from the past story. OMG Grace is the best. Everyone should have a Grace! I have read every book by Stacy Eaton. You will not be disappointed.

Devil's Own
This is the first story be this author. I get excited when i find new amazing authors. Devil Own, WOW what a great story and well written.
Liam escaped the gang called the Devils years ago. He is now back working undercover to get the leader of the Devils, Kane. With the help of Ryker and Falcon. They were searching for evidence. They needed to get Cassidy out before Kane got his hands on her. Devil's Own had me bitting my nails at times. I truly loved this story. Thid is a standalone with a HEA.

Romance By The Book

One amazing boxset! So far I’ve read 4 of the books and can’t wait to read the rest.

Midnight Cove by Pandora Spocks has you pulled in and won’t stop until your finished. Bree has rented a lake house to do some writing. Little does she know that it comes with its own ghost with a mystery that needs to be solved. Will she help solve this mystery? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

Romance by the Book by Amy Manann was a cute Halloween Romance with a little twist mystery. Must read!

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Sharon Coady had me second guessing everything I thought was going to happen. Definitely had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

That Spooktacular Kuss by Tamara Ferguson was a suspenseful and romantic read. Ashley and Brian are friends that have decided to date even though their families are acting strange. Will their relationship survive all that is going on? Will they solve the mystery that is in front of them? Another wonderful book.

Definitely recommend this boxset.

Dark Secrets: Nine Fall Romantic Suspense Novels is a nine book collection written by nine different authors and is perfect to read this time of year especially if you love your romance stories with a little bit of suspense. Each story is a standalone story, but a common thread runs through them all for just the right amount of suspense and spookiness.

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
