Galaxy's Edge #7-8

Galaxy's Edge, Part IV

Rate this book
Galaxy's Edge, Part IV contains Turning Point through to the end of Message for the Dead.

Fight to win. Survive the future.

With the galaxy in turmoil, the Legion initiates Article Nineteen, a hard reset designed to halt the corruption and ineptitude that continues to spill forth from the Galactic Core. But when the House of Reason aligns itself with the bloodthirsty zhee extremists, the Legion has no choice but to commit to a savage campaign of Total War.

As Legion Commander Keller attempts to coax the Republic and Black Fleet into a winner-take-all battle at the heart of the Galactic Core, Wraith uncovers secrets from Tyrus Rechs’s past. Determined to liberate his crew from the clutches of a dormant fleet controlled by a hostile AI, the soldier-turned-rogue comes face to face with the galaxy’s greatest threat.

Meanwhile, Captain Chhun and Victory Squad follow intelligence that could land a powerful blow against Goth Sullus and his fledgling empire, and Exo and Wraith, in an tenuous alliance, move toward a slumbering fleet that could permanently alter the delicate balance of power among Legion, Republic, and Empire - or could just as easily eradicate the galaxy altogether.

Chhun and Kill Team Victory find themselves taking on new roles inside the Legion, and the fight for control of the Galactic Republic hits its zenith with the arrival of the malevolent Cybar.

I think I would have given up had it not been for RC Bray.

This is a L-O-N-G book - almost 20 hours on audio. There's a ton that happens - but things really do move past the politics and war (which can get really boring) at a reasonable pace (or at least enough to not make me want to DNF the book). I did nearly give up at one point because I was just bored. But I'm glad I hung in there because I really do like Keel and company. Commander Chhun and his team are also favorites.

There is one thing that really bothered me. I suppose all authors do it at one point - they kill off a character that apparently "needs to die" for some reason or another. I was a little stunned at the one they chose in this book; bad choice in my opinion. I nearly DNF'd the book at that point. But . . . I was invested enough in the other characters that I wanted to keep going, so I did.

I usually can get through a book of this length in about 2 days. This took me 2 weeks. Seriously, if not for RC Bray's narration I never would have made it. He is a genius.

Talk about twists and turns, Cole and Anspach deliver a roller coaster through the unparalleled baritone of R.C. Bray. Turning Point and Message for the Dead will have you holding your breath, fist pumping, grinding your teeth, and shedding tears of frustration and loss, as we follow some of our favorite Dark Ops legionnaires and the Legion at large to determine the fate of the galaxy.

Building toward an epic culmination and a thrilling and heartfelt entry

Turning Point is another strong entry in the Galaxy’s Edge series, setting the stage for what promises to be an incredible convergence of plotlines and character arcs. The story’s momentum continues to build as it weaves together the many threads introduced throughout the series, keeping me eagerly anticipating how it will all come together.

The narrative delivers the right mix of action, intrigue, and character-driven moments, ensuring that every chapter feels purposeful and engaging. It’s exciting to see the stakes rise as the story marches toward its climax. I can’t wait to see how Nick Cole and Jason Anspach bring it all to a head!

Message for the Dead continues to impress, blending high-stakes action with deeply emotional storytelling. It’s a testament to the series’ strength that, even after nine books, it remains so engaging and fresh.

One of the highlights of this installment is the exploration and fleshing out of Tyrus Rechs. The narrative delves deeper into his history, motivations, and the toll of his journey, adding layers of complexity to an already fascinating character. Seeing Rechs’ internal struggles and understanding more about what drives him gave this story an emotional depth that resonates beyond the action.

I loved how this installment balanced intense battles and strategic maneuvers with heartfelt moments that grounded the story. The exploration of Rechs’ character was a standout element, showcasing Nick Cole and Jason Anspach’s ability to create heroes who feel both larger-than-life and profoundly human.

I have to admit this time I sometimes lost track of the who is who in this action packed military thriller. More and more characters got added, sometimes only for a very short time, mostly to make us care about it when they are killed off. It is of course a clever plot tool, but it works nevertheless. 🤣

As for the entire series and world building, I’m a bit surprised about the amount of very close similarities to other properties, like Star Wars, Star Trek and the like. This time we not only had a Sith Lord, but he got pretty close to wielding a light saber. 😁
There were similarities to other properties as well, but apparently the authors got away with all that without anyone minding; I sure as hell don’t, but I did notice. Just saying.

Anyway, I’m loving this saga more and more and cannot get enough of it, so I will be continuing, hoping the authors will find a way to never make it end.
FYI, I am listening in the recommended order, according to the authors’ website. So the next title I will be listening to is Chasing the Dragon.

This series took a little to hit it stride and figure out what part of the timeline it wanted to navigate from. Now that it isn't jumping back and forth and is a little more linear in progression, I'm really start to like it.

Truly epic story from start to finish. Simply couldn't stop the 2nd book, it was brimming with action and suspense. And it didn't even stop during the epilogue. Can't wait to continue Victory's story

While it was shocking to see all of the carefully laid plans of the Legion go up in smoke and reading one of my favorite characters get killed in action, I'm glad Victory squad is reunited.
