P.O.L.A.R. #3

Hero Bear

Rate this book
This is the second book in the P.O.L.A.R. series.

P.O.L.A.R. (Private Ops: League Arctic Rescue) is a specialized, private operations task force -- a maritime unit of polar bear shifters. Part of a world-wide, clandestine army comprised of the best of the best shifters, P.O.L.A.R.'s home base is Siberia -- until the team pisses somebody off and gets re-assigned to Sunkissed Key, Florida and these arctic shifters suddenly find themselves surrounded by sun, sand, flip-flops and palm trees!

Kerrigan is in a heck of a pickle.

Substandard job performance.
Indebted to a sleazy loan shark.
Crushing on a shifter who's out of her league.

Dmitry's not gentle.
He's not the nurturing type.
He's a cold-blooded killer -- a P.O.L.A.R. assassin

But, when he steps in to protect her,
Kerrigan doesn't see a killer.
She sees a Hero Bear.
*-*

This is a steamy paranormal shifter fantasy romance with an HEA and no cliff-hangers. This story is intended for 18+ readers, due to mature themese and graphic sex scenes.
Fans of Zoe Chant, Terry Bolryder, Harmony Raines and T.S. Joyce may like this shapeshifter series.

My favorite tropes wrapped into one novella.. 5 stars!

This novella was exactly what I was looking for! It had all of my favorite tropes wrapped into one amazing story:
🖤 grumpy/sunshine
🖤 fated mates
🖤 hate-to-love-you
🖤 protector hero
🖤 nerdy heroine/angsty hero

I LOVED Kerrigan as a heroine! She was so relatable and quirky and such a hot mess that I think many of us can relate to, and I absolutely loved her. Dmitry was such a great broody and protective hero. This is one of my favorite stories by Candace Ayers so far! ♡

WARNING: This review does include a few spoilers!

This is Book 2 of the P.O.L.A.R. (Private Ops: League Arctic Rescue) series which takes place in Sunkissed Key, Florida. Hardly a place for polar bear shifters to exist, but when your boss pisses off someone on high, well, you have to deal with whatever cards you’ve been dealt with. At least you won’t be alone… except if you don’t have a mate. And apparently, a mate is necessary to tolerate the sh*t life dealt you.

Dmitry is the team’s sniper/killer/assassin. He’s terribly good at what he does. Unfortunately, though he sees himself as a necessary evil, he also finds himself totally unsuitable to being anyone’s mate, let alone Kerrigan Tran’s mate. He has decided she needs someone far more gentle without the karmic staining on his armor. After all, she really needs a protector as she is such a klut who probably trips over air!

Kerrigan is the team’s dispatcher and all-around office lady so to speak. The problem is that she really sucks at her job. She has zero confidence in herself, especially since she keeps screwing up the easiest of messages from Central Office. That, alone, has sent the team to incorrect locations, loaded for bear, only to discover that they were prepared to take out a rapid shifter except they just busted down the door of an elderly couple's home. No, it doesn’t help that the ancient husband practically dishes Serge’s ass to him with both hands. (And Serge’s the alpha of the team!) She has a total crush on Dmitry but cannot even do the simplest of things like walking and breathing in his presence. To her, Dmitry blows hot and cold, always keeping his words and gestures to himself. As far as she’s concerned, he cares nothing for her.

That’s the problem. He cares too much and obsessively follows her so that she stays out of trouble, much to his detriment.

So it’s time to sh*t or get off the pot. For both of them. Who knows what will happen?

Length and pace: This book was longer than Book 1. In fact, I would daresay that it was a much longer novella and just shy of being a short novel. That’s great for me! I liked what I was reading since I wasn't looking for great depth. The pace was fine without rushing, though I so wished to know how things went after the great Reveal of Emotions. So many unanswered questions about how their relationship ended up being like. We really need an epilogue!

Characters: In comparison to Roman (Book 1), Dmitry was dark and reclusive and brooding which just makes him so much more delectable. He truly believes he isn’t worthy of any kind of love, especially hers, when he knows they are true mates. How he manages to stay away from her without claiming her for this long is quite amazing, and it was one of the things that caused a hiccup in my suspension of disbelief. Yeah, the inevitable speed bump in my reading. Fine, so he does spend most of this book angsting over Kerrigan from afar. I can relate to that. Anyone who is the king or queen of unrequited love fully understands that kind of despair. Maybe that’s why I identified so much with Dmitry rather than Kerrigan. It isn’t that I wasn’t sympathetic towards Kerrigan. I most certainly was. Maybe she wasn’t hurting the way I’ve felt back in those days. But that didn’t make me appreciate her any less. She definitely lacks self-confidence and many social skills. I do love her cute, little diatribe to Megan about how she was completely out-of-control with her life, and Megan had everything about hers so together. Now that I had read Book 1, I can definitely disagree with Kerrigan’s analysis of Megan’s history of relationships, but she does give Kerrigan the best answer in this book. She doesn’t have it altogether. The best anyone can to do is to try really hard to keep his/her sh*t together. I only wish we could have seen these two discover more about each other as Megan and Roman did… or at least tried. Was this book’s plot line a template? Oh, yeah, it was! But I’m reading this strictly for the brain candy that Book 1 proved itself to be.

World-creation: In my review of Book 1, I made the statement that this island was way too small to be self-sustaining in the biosphere represented by the writer. I still maintain that opinion, or all the buildings would have toppled down due to liquefaction of the sandy foundation they were built upon. In this book, we all learn more about Sunkissed Key, Florida with all its beaches and bars and cafes and coffee shops and boutiques. Keep in mind that a few centuries of hurricanes and tropical storms should had eroded most of this island away (had it actually been three miles in length as originally designed by the author) just like so many outer islands are disappearing off the coasts of North and South Carolinas. I do like how much entertainment is available on this isle. I don’t believe in Spring Break, but I would if this island truly existed. I think it would be so much fun to visit just to explore and be lazy on the beaches. Maybe some body-surfing. (I don’t do boards.) Definitely the tiki bar and the Bayfront Diner! So I see this part as a success.

Continuity, plot, and editing: Still the usual usual problems with punctuation and grammar I usually see made in indie books written today. However, compared to Book 1, I noticed more wrong words appearing and words missing that should have been discovered and corrected with a few read-throughs. So far, continuity has been maintained from Book 1. I only wish we could know more about how things have gone with Megan and Roman other than they’re still in the honeymoon of their mating. As for Serge and Hannah, we get a few additional tidbits on what had happened to them. I don’t know if we’ll ever now what Serge did to truly piss off his superiors. The one thing I’m seeing is a template of its own making. Boy and girl feel mutual attraction. Something is preventing boy and girl from boinking each other. Problems with communication make boy and girl misunderstand what’s really going on with each other. Boy and girl, after much emotional angst, get together/boink each other, and SUDDENLY THE END!!!!!! I think a nice, little epilogue is warranted here. It doesn’t have to eat into the next book, but the readership needs some aftercare, lady!

Realism: Unlike the previous book, I’m seeing this book sidling over to the usual, overworked shifter boy/human girl romance template. This is a real shame. I hope Book 3 would be a little different. At least Kerrigan ends of quitting her job with P.O.L.A.R. Usually, the template would have dictated that the heroine would either maintain her job (including the fringe benefits that come with it!) or becomes a stay-at-home baby mama who doesn’t have to work anymore because her mate is bringing in all the $$$! At least we’re looking at something far more realistic.

Despite my whining, I did like this book enough to finish reading it… and I’ll probably reread it again at least once. As mentioned in my review of Book 1, I did buy the rest in the series so far. And why not? It’s fun brain candy, but I only wished that our writer could have done a few more original subplots that would have torpedoed my opinion regarding the templated plot line from my subconscious brain. So we did have some distractions that affected my suspension of disbelief. I wish it could had been otherwise. At least I’m not spending a ton of cash is all I can say.

Stars = 3.8
Plot = 3/5
Length and pace = 3.5/5
Characters = 4/5
World creation = 4/5
Romance = 5/5
Continuity and editing = 3.5/5
Realism = 3.5/5
Would I recommend this book = Yes
Would I read future books by this author = Yes

This is an OK shifter romance, with a likable couple, but it was too short to have as much character development as I like. Very little backstory was provided on either Dmitry or Kerrigan -- I really needed more on both of them. The couple does fall in instalove, and there are sex scenes, which is typical for shifter romances.

*** Minor Spoilers Follow ***

I thought it was kind of ridiculous that Kerrigan was so bad at taking/delivering phone messages. She had a master's degree, and couldn't take messages? Sorry, but that was just not very believable. It also seemed really unlikely that a woman working on a masters degree would be dumb enough to borrow money from someone without making sure he was an honest businessman.

I also thought that Dmitry was wrong to NOT tell Kerrigan why he pushed her away after they were first intimate. He thought he was a monster and needed to stay away from her, but it should have been her choice if she wanted to get involved with him.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Too much "I'm worthless; I'm dangerous," back and forth and back and forth. ..

Annoying? You bet. It interfered with a reader's ability to enjoy the story. Kerrigan might have been a bit dyslexic as well as extremely lacking in confidence, and she was soooo not suited for emergency rescue work since they needed someone who wouldn't panic at the drop of a hat.

However, she had to work there and mess things up for the team so she could stir Dmitry's bear and mating instincts, I guess - it just would have been nice if one of them could ave been more decisive. Boring.

I liked it, but there are some questions. Kerrigan has a Master's Degree, but in what? If her mom is married to some big wig, why did Kerrigan have to take out a loan from a loan shark? Where's her dad? Did mom refuse to pay for her Master's? Why is she not using her degree? She has a Master's degree, but doesn't know how to take notes?

Dmitri is a bit of an ass, and a bit too concerned that he's a "monster" without really giving much of a reason for it. It didn't seem like he was any different than any of the other guys, but for some reason thought he was a monster. That wasn't exactly clear as to why he thought that. Also, it kept referencing him checking on her pretty much nightly, even while she lived in her car. If he knew she was living in her car, why didn't he tell Serge sooner? Is he the one that told Serge she was living in her car, or how did Serge find out?

I liked the book. It was a sweet read. If the thing had been fleshed out more, I would have given it a higher rating. I just had way too many question that never got answered, that kind of should have been.

Book 3 in the series introduces us more in depth to Dmitry. He is the assassin of the group, and although he knows that Kerrigan is his mate he feels he is not good enough for her. And isn’t it just fitting that Kerrigan feels the same except she feels she is a loser and not good enough for him. Although she knows that he is a polar bear shifter, and has a feeling that she is his mate she also feels he does not want her. What a roller coaster their relationship is. But what happens when a loan shark is after her is what we all want in a mate. We want our big strong mate to come save us and that is exactly what Kerrigan got. She finally got her mate. Such a good book a miscommunication and lack of self worth coming full circle to a happily ever after.

Oh man, I can't believe everything Dmitry and Kerrigan went through to be together!

Really? Dmitry and Kerrigan both lack confidence, although I get that Dmtry doesn't think he deserves happiness because his job has him having to kill bad people and Kerrigan thinks because she's awkward and accident prone that no one can love her because of it. It made me so sad that she has all this self doubt about herself that she should have never had. I loved her character because she reminds me so much of myself and I am so happy that she was able to finally have the man she is meant to be with at her side just like I was able to find the one for myself. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see which of the P.O.L.A.R team members is next to get his HEA.

not even 1 star. Found this audio on YT.
She is one pathetic excuse of a grown woman, acts like a dumb teenager. Keeps bumping into stuff or what ever nonsense. No one goes swimming in the ocean, drunk... stays under water and thinks " she wants to stay there for even for it is so nice under water and fish do not care who you are " if you need air. This is so idiotic... Just like with the book Rescue Bear.. boring and the guy is also boring.
And this mating behavior in both books..lame. No guy wants to have something like that in his life. Believe me. Even a bear would not need someone that can not be left alone for a minute. This is like Kindergarden ... I skipped the end of the book, for it is just not worth my time.

Not my favorite in the series

I have read most, if not all, in the P.OL.A.R. series and enjoyed them. This one was heavier and more dramatic than the others. I had some issues with Kerrigan. She was intelligent yet didn't realize she borrowed money from a loan shark? She couldn't copy down what they told her on the phone? She was working there even though people's lives could depend on it? I just could not get past these things. Dmitry didn't tell her he paid the loan shark? I know stories need drama, but I just wasn't feeling these. I understand Dmitri thinking he wasn't right but he knew she was his mate. This one needed some lighthearted moments and communication!

Good shifter romance

I'm enjoying this P.O.L.A.R. series so much! Klutzy Kerrigan is a bit of a mess but such a charmer; her mishaps add humor. Dmitry is a wonderfully protective shifter who shares Kerrigan's feelings of unworthiness. For me, this vulnerability adds to the storyline. The team's loyalty to one another is great, and the mates are adding to the tight-knit community that is forming. The only real quibble is with the sub-par editing, but I still look forward to Book 3.

This is Kerrigan and Dmitry book.

I liked this one but not as much as the first. There were just a few things that really bothered me.

I understood how Kerrigan got her job but come on someone who makes these types of mistakes especially in life and deather situations would be fired. Also, she is going for her Master's degree, so she's not dumb.

Dmitry was a good character. I little broody on the whole, I'm a killer how can she like me stance but otherwise he was a great character.

good

The second short and sweet romance featuring the P.O.L.A.R. Bears, shifters and security specialists.
This time, it is Dmitry that gets his tale, when the clumsy Kerrigan (not so good dispatcher for the team) gets herself into trouble!

An enjoyable, yet quick read, it builds on the story we’ve already learned from Roman’s book.
It’s a sweet story, with a little romance and a bit of danger thrown in for fun!

Recommended for fans of paranormal romance.

Kerrigan and Dmitry

This is a very good, short, well written, Shifter/ Human mate romance. The characters are interesting and lovable. Several characters from the previous stories are in this one. Kerrigan feel like a loser living out of her car and failing at her job. Dmitry thinks he is a monster because of his role on the team and not worthy of love. Read how these two finally learn they are better than they think.

I about had to punch him

Freaking stubborn Dmitry. So freaking stubborn. I have a feeling they were being sabbataged the P.O.L.A.R. opp group and Kerrigan just happened to be the one who answers the phone. But freaking Dmitry almost screwed up by not claiming her from the word go. Good thing his bear is not going to let him walk away.

it is a quick cute storyline one to read. I however prefer to have a bit more substance to a story than what is given in this book. not sure I can be bothered getting the series. I want more than an hour read for a book at a time. Better background storylines of the characters to flesh out the whole story would be appreciated,

Kerrigan and Dmitry were pretty intense to read about. Lots of back and forth between them, keeping me glued to the book. I liked their spunk and I thought Kerrigan's grandma has a pretty accurate phrase. I'm really liking this series and can't wait to see what happens next.

Twenty-something Kerrigan’s so frustrated! She hates her job and doesn’t do it well, living in her car, tired of being a virgin especially when Dmitry, the object of her desire, won’t take what she’s offering and on top of that she owes a vicious loan action shark! For Dmitry’s part, he realizes Kerrigan’s his mate, he just doesn’t think he’s good enough.

Each book can be read as a stand alone but it does help to read previous books to know the stories of each bear and how it effects the team. Oh my Kerrigan is something of a mess. She does not focus and makes all kinds of errors in the office. She has no direction in her life since she has graduated college. She does have a desire to write romance books but no plan in place. Dmitry now has his own issues of thinking because of his role on the team he is not good enough to be her mate. The lack of communication between these two is off the charts! But if they had talked there would be no book. I liked how the team helps him though his self denial of his mate. They push him to his limits. But it takes a loan shark to finally open his eyes. Get read !!!
