We visited Yellowstone this past summer and stayed in Silver Gate. While at a coffee shop in Cooke City, I visited with the barista and found that the author lived in Cooke City and Hemingway had spent much time there. I was intrigued. I enjoyed the story of his life in the Yellowstone area.
This book is the selection for March, 2022 for One Book Billings. I am a discussion leader for one of the groups so I needed to read this book. Written by Chris Warren, who lives in Cooke City, Montana the book sets out to prove Hemingway spent time writing, hunting, and fishing in the region during the 1930's. The author spent much time relating the books and short stories of Hemingway to the events that took place during the writing of them and the area around Cooke City. I am not a fan of Hemingway so this book was a stretch for me, but I found it interesting since it is an area of Montana i know a little about.
Interesting to learn details of the summers Hemingway spent in Montana and how his experiences there were included in short stories and novels. Interesting as well to read about how he managed his time writing between hunting and fishing expeditions. Also to learn about his time with family and the people he met. Very different from the often written about time in Paris, Spain, and Africa. The summers at the ranch appear to have a lasting impact on him, his family and his writing.
interesting information and connection of a place --- a ranch in Clarke City -- to the writing of Ernest Hemingway.
I would have rated it higher if it wasn't so repetitive. The pictures have captions that are repeats of the text.. and half of the book is restating what had been mentioned earlier in the book.
The re-statements almost feel as if they were cut and pasted from other parts of the book.
After making the trek out west doing all the spots Hemingway....I really enjoyed this book. It also can inspire one to make the trip and be used as a historical guide book. The Hemingway Society is bringing their biennial conference to Cooke City, Montana and Sheridan, Wyoming in 2020 because of this book.
