Super easy-breezy read - except you continually feel really fucking sick. And sometimes it's hard not to be disbelieving: surely people can't be that hypocritcial, stupid and lacking of self-awareness? (I mean, I get that there are people like that but… I STILL have a hard time crediting it?) The best bits are the ones that show some sort of nuance in the men's attitudes: makes them more like people and less like cartoon villains. (I mean, yes, their acts are absolutely villainous, but I find it cowardly and lazy to dismiss them as entirely other than you and me, because well.) The books is also difficult in that you read about it, get really upset, but then find yourself at a loss for what to do with that indignation. I've never been to Thailand, and have no intention of going. How can I help? What should I do? Nothing, I suppose. Feel upset for a bit. Read something else. There's a moral here, I feel, and not a very flattering one for me...
